Deadline for federally compliant ID

May 7

With a deadline approaching for U.S. citizens to obtain Real IDs, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is urging Illinois residents to “Get Real.”

Real ID is a federally-standardized identification card that requires stricter proof of identity to obtain than the regular state driver’s licenses or ID cards. All Drivers Services facilities in Illinois are issuing Real IDs, except for mobile units and express facilities.

Last May, Giannoulias’ office launched the “Get Real Illinois” campaign to raise awareness about the requirements and deadline of the Real ID implementation. During a news conference Tuesday, he continued to urge Illinoisans to obtain the new ID soon, as a federal deadline approaches.

On May 7, state-issued driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted as a valid form of identification for domestic flights or at certain federal facilities such as military bases or federal courthouses. Although U.S. citizens will need a Real ID to visit those facilities, they will not need a Real ID to fly domestically if they have a valid passport.

A Real ID is signified by a gold star on the upper right corner of the ID card.

“We know for sure that as May 7 approaches, demand for Real ID drivers’ licenses and state IDs will inevitably increase,” Giannoulias said. “What we don’t want are crazy, unmanageable lines at our facilities and major issues for individuals and their families at our airports.”

He said the news conference aimed to “clear up confusion” over the technicalities of the Real ID.

“Since the new administration has taken over in D.C., we’ve seen an influx of people who are confused about what real ID means and think they need it as a form of identification,” Giannoulias said. “And our point that we’re trying to hammer home today is that that’s not the case. You do not need a Real ID to drive a vehicle.”

Other qualms about the new identification have arisen, including issues around gender identity and the likelihood of the May 7 deadline

holding firm. Although Giannoulias didn’t directly address the first issue, he said multiple times that Illinoisans should use their own discretion to decide if the Real ID is right for them.

“I don’t want to discourage anyone from getting a Real ID, but the fact is that not everyone needs a Real ID on May 7, and in some cases, might not ever need one,” Giannoulias said.

However, he did address growing skepticism that the deadline won’t hold firm.

“I know many of you are asking yourselves, after years of blown deadlines, delays and extensions, why should we trust the Department of Homeland Security,” he said. “The reasons for the delays have run the gamut, ranging from partisan politics to a lack of coordination among the federal government and various states.”

In direct response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, which established “minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.” The effective date of the law has been extended multiple times, most recently to 2025 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now I get asked on a regular basis, is this real ID deadline for real this time,” Giannoulias said. “The one thing that’s different this time around is that TSA just recently published a ‘final rule,’ rejecting the option for another extension and requiring the regulation to finally take effect.”.

TSA’s final rule, which they published on Jan. 13, 2025, stated the agency will begin enforcing the law on May 7, taking what they call a “phased enforcement approach” to implement enforcement until May 2027.

The Secretary of State’s website has an interactive checklist where Illinoisans can find out what documents they need to obtain a Real ID. The required documents include proof of identity, proof of full Social Security number, and two documents providing proof of current address.

The Hampton University Museum Reopens with Expanded Exhibits, Enhanced Visitor Experience

HAMPTON, Va., PRNewswire -- Hampton University proudly announces the re-grand opening of the Hampton University Museum, the nation’s oldest African American museum and the oldest museum in the Commonwealth of Virginia, after an extensive revitalization that introduces new exhibits and an enriched visitor experience. Established in 1868, the museum remains an unparalleled cultural treasure, housing one of the most comprehensive collections of African, African American, and Indigenous art in the United States.

The reopening unveils a dynamic expansion of the museum’s galleries, showcasing newly acquired works alongside timeless pieces that define the institution’s legacy. Visitors will experience an immersive journey through history, culture, and artistic expression with a refreshed layout designed to deepen engagement with the museum’s extraordinary collections.

“For more than 150 years, the Hampton University Museum has been a national leader in preserving and celebrating African American and Indigenous art and culture,” said Lt. Gen (retired) Darrell K. Williams, president of Hampton University. “This reopening marks a new chapter in our commitment to education, preservation, and community engagement.”

130 years of existence, the museum has been a guardian of artwork and artifacts spanning the entirety of the African American experience while also showcasing elements of Indigenous and Polynesian cultures as well.

Hampton was the recipient of a gift of hundreds of artworks from the Harmon Foundation in 1967, which includes representation of most of the important artists from the Harlem Renaissance into the early 1960s. The Museum also houses the Countee and Ida Cullen Art Collection; a group of 29 works of art acquired from the widow of the famed Harlem Renaissance poet. Among the most outstanding holdings are works by three important figures connected to the visual arts at Hampton: John T. Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, and Samella S. Lewis. In addition to the African American Fine Art Collection, the Museum features African, Native American, and the Hampton History Galleries as permanent exhibitions.

New exhibits at the museum include a Veteran’s display honoring notable Hampton alumni with impressive service to the Armed Forces, a display featuring costumes on long term loan by Oscar-winning designer Ruth E. Carter, and new additions to the African and Native American displays throughout the museum.

The Hampton University Museum, which is free and open to the public, is composed of the world’s first collection of African American fine art, which began with the 1894 acquisition of two paintings by Henry O. Tanner. One of these paintings, The Banjo Lesson, is acknowledged as the most admired work by an African American artist. With over

Advancing Art Through Adversity

At the turn of the century, as Jim Crow laws and segregation spread across the South, the Hampton University Museum persevered through these societal challenges, providing a vital platform for African American artistry and expression.

Throughout the 20th Century, African American art faced significant disregard and disrespect due to a combination of systemic racism, exclusion from mainstream art institutions, and deeply entrenched societal biases. African American artists were often denied access to prominent galleries and museums, which were the primary spaces for showcasing and legitimizing art. Few institutions considered Black art as part of the American cultural canon. Furthermore, depictions of African Americans in mainstream media included themes like ‘blackface,’ ‘minstrels,’ and other derogatory imagery that negatively impacted African American expression.

When African American art was acknowledged, it was often viewed through a reductive lens, focusing on themes of poverty, oppression, or folklore rather than recognizing

the full spectrum of artistic expression. Additionally, African American artwork has historically been criticized as “primitive” or “folk art,” diminishing its complexity and innovation.

Despite these challenges, the Hampton University Museum champions the beauty and relevance of Black creativity.

The Hampton University Museum is directed by Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward. Previously, she was Director of the York Bailey Museum, at Penn Center on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Thaxton-Ward previously served on the board of Arts for Learning and the Virginia Association of Museums board and the Commission on African American History Education in the Commonwealth, appointed by Governor Ralph Northam. She is currently a Commissioner for the Virginia Arts Commission appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin and serves on the board of the Barrett-Peake Foundation.

As Director, she has secured funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Save America’s Treasures, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Luce Foundation, Art Bridges Foundation, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in partnership with the Chrysler Museum of Art.

An Experience of a Lifetime in One Afternoon

From breathtaking African masks to contemporary masterpieces by artists like Jacob Lawrence and Samella Lewis, the museum’s galleries are a vibrant Kaleidescope of cultures. Where else can you take a journey from 19th-century America to the African savannah, then hop over to the pacific islands of Hawaii —all in one afternoon? With over 9,000 works in its collection, every visit to the Hampton University Museum is a chance to uncover something new.

Artwork that tells the Story of America’s Rich History

Every piece in the museum tells a story. Museum goers can step into the lives of trailblazing artists like Henry Ossawa Tanner and John Biggers, whose works capture the beauty, struggle, and triumph of the Black experience. Furthermore, the Museum allows guests to explore Native American textiles, African artifacts, and even Asian ceramics that connect global histories in unexpected ways. This isn’t just art—it’s a conversation with the past, present, and future

Today, as conversations about racial equity and representation in the arts gain momentum, the Hampton University Museum continues to play a critical role in shaping these dialogues. Through its exhibitions, educational programs, and partnerships, the museum seeks to inspire a new generation of artists and art lovers to celebrate and support African

National Society of Black Engineers Celebrates Milestone 50th Anniversary During 2025 Annual Convention

ALEXANDRIA, Va., PRNewswire -- The National Society of Black Engineers® (NSBE®), one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the U.S., is excited to announce its 2025 Annual Convention (“NSBE 2025”). Taking place from March 5–9 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, North America’s top convention center, NSBE’s largest convening is centered on the theme “Inspire! Excel! Impact!” this year, which reflects the organization’s mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

Last year’s convention saw roughly 17,000 attendees, and the organization is looking to attract even more in 2025 as they celebrate “Five Decades of Black Excellence Engineered.” Through workshops, panel discussions and interactive activities, attendees will experience unparalleled opportunities and be given tools to excel in academia, Corporate America, entrepreneurship and beyond. Event sponsors, including Microsoft, will be on-site, ready to engage with young professionals and

foster meaningful relationships.

The 2025 Annual Convention is a four-day event with an anticipated 400-plus Career Fair exhibitors and more than 20,000 attendees participating in scores of activities, including the Opening, General and Closing Sessions.

A standout feature of the Annual Convention is the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Conference, designed to support the next generation of engineers, featuring motivational speakers and accomplished leaders sharing their journeys and insights. Youth participants can also compete in educational activities and events like the Ten80 NSBE National STEM Challenge, a racing competition featuring radio-controlled cars; the VEX IQ Competition, a robot engineering challenge; and the KidWind Competition, which works to make renewable energy widely accessible.

Members can visit the NSBE Legacy Museum, which will have artifacts and exhibitions from the organization’s storied history, and a newly released coffee table book chronicling the Society’s background and

growth. NSBE’s founders and key stakeholders will be present to highlight the organization’s legacy and the transformative impact it has made on the field of engineering and beyond. The organization’s signature recognition event, the NSBE Golden Torch Awards, honors the best and brightest in STEM, with categories highlighting corporate diversity, academic success, community impact and more.

“As we celebrate 50 years of NSBE, this year’s Annual Convention is more than just a gathering; it’s a testament to the resilience, brilliance and impact of Black engineers across generations,” said Janeen Uzzell, NSBE’s CEO. NSBE was formed in 1975 as a response to the lack of representation and success of Black people in higher education engineering programs and, thus, in the workforce. NSBE 2025 continues the legacy of fostering equality, professional growth and abundant opportunities for Black students and professionals pursuing engineering and other STEM careers. MICHAEL B. JORDAN USHERS DAVID YURMAN’S CHEVRON COLLECTION INTO ITS NEXT CHAPTER

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- David Yurman, America’s foremost luxury jewelry brand, is pleased to unveil its Spring 2025 Chevron campaign, starring acclaimed actor, director, producer, and global brand ambassador Michael B. Jordan.

David Yurman’s new men’s campaign tells the story of a modern man’s journey of self-expression and the pursuit of excellence. Against the backdrop of Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City, renowned luxury fashion photographer Tyrone Lebon and film director Frank Lebon highlight the contrast of light and shadow across a series of film images and video that see Jordan walk with intention and determination—a symbolic nod to his illustrious film career and the Chevron collection itself.

“I am inspired by the way David Yurman stays true to itself while continuing to evolve,” said Jordan, who was styled by longtime stylist Jason Bolden for the campaign. “From David and Sybil’s artistic partnership with each other, to their ongoing collaboration with their son Evan, I look forward to continue working alongside a brand that values vision and innovation.”

Jordan’s next film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) will premiere globally in theaters on April 18th. Following his successful directorial debut with Creed III, Jordan is set to expand his filmmaking career with his sophomore feature, The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios.

Originally launched in 2007, the Chevron Collection takes inspiration from ancient architecture and art and has been skillfully reinterpreted into the modern, sculptural design seen today. Viewed in relation to one another, each half of the Chevron motif is a mirror image of the signature Cable: a flattened reflection of the brand’s DNA and the pursuit of excellence within design and craftsmanship. Mirroring the campaign itself, the iconic Chevron pattern is a play on light and dark–with deeply carved valleys contrasting against highly polished flutes. Com-

prising of bracelets, rings and especially tags, the Chevron pattern has quickly become a staple design for the men’s collections, the fastest growing category of the business.

David Yurman’s partnership with Jordan began in Spring 2024 with the launch of the brand’s first-ever men’s high jewelry collection, The Vault. Building on the brand’s momentum and leadership in the men’s jewelry space, the new campaign underscores David Yurman’s ongoing connection to influential cultural figures who embody individuality and dedication to one’s craft–further solidifying the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and artistry. Like David Yurman himself, Jordan is in a constant state of evolution as he transitions from actor to producer to director.

“Michael’s unwavering confidence and authenticity, both in front of and behind the camera, reflect his strong work ethic and character. Through this new campaign, we hope to inspire our audiences to follow the same passion that Jordan does in shaping his destiny,” said President and Chief Creative Officer Evan Yurman.

The Spring 2025 Men’s Chevron campaign launched on David Yurman.com and across all global social channels: @davidyurman and @davidyurmanmen. For more information, visit davidyurman. com.

David Yurman is a celebrated American jewelry company founded in New York by David Yurman, a sculptor, and his wife, Sybil, a painter and ceramicist. When the artists began collaborating, their goal was simply to make beautifully designed objects to wear. Lead today by their son Evan, David Yurman creates timeless, yet contemporary collections for women and men defined by inspiration, innovation, consummate craftsmanship and Cable – the brand’s artistic signature. David Yurman collections are available on DavidYurman.com as well as 51 retail stores throughout the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and France and at over 300 locations worldwide, through their exclusive authorized fine jewelry and timepiece network of retailers.

HEYDUDE Partners with Heisman Trophy Winner Travis Hunter

WESTWOOD, Mass., PRNewswire -- HEYDUDE, the popular casual footwear brand that is known for blending individual style and lightweight comfort into every pair of shoes, is launching a new global campaign, “Unlike Anything”. The campaign features rising football star and Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, who continues to redefine what it means to defy expectations and pave his own path on and off the football field.

The “Unlike Anything” campaign is an important milestone for the brand, aimed at embracing the very things that make our fans truly unlike anything. Celebrating those who are defiantly comfortable in their own shoes, creative, confident and uniquely themselves.

Hunter was one of the most dynamic players in college football history, as a unanimous All-American excelling at both cornerback and wide receiver. His historic senior season had him named AP College Football Player of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner, and Academic All-American. He is expected to be a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“We’re excited to finally debut ‘Unlike Anything’ because it’s a true celebration of HEYDUDE and the community of Dudes around us,” said Paul Nugent, CMO, HEYDUDE. “That ethos is ingrained in our DNA and has been our north star from product drops, partnerships and everything in between. We knew Travis could really bring this mantra to life in a unique and dynamic way, so once we found out he was already a long-time brand fan, it felt like a no-brainer.”

Although Hunter’s versatility on the football field captured national attention, it is equally how he conducts himself off the field – his unique style, confidence and ability to challenge norms — that perfectly embodies the “Unlike Anything” positioning.

A genuine fan of the brand, Hunter will show-off his more casual side in this campaign, being captured off the field doing the things he loves - fishing, gaming and unwinding after practice. The campaign will feature him in various HEYDUDE Wally styles, including the Wally Stretch Sox and Wally Slipper, that provide lightweight comfort.

“For me, being great starts with how I spend my time off the field to recharge and focus,” said Travis Hunter. “Whether I am relaxing or on a boat fishing, my HEYDUDE Wally shoes bring a sense of comfort and confidence that allows me to really live in the moment and find that balance. That’s why I’m so excited to show off my HEYDUDE Wally shoes that have been a part of my life for a long time.”

The partnership with Hunter will be the first of many to come for the brand under the “Unlike Anything” platform, and will include new Wally product drops, coordinated social media efforts, and in-store and digital marketing. The campaign will pave new ways for HEYDUDE to continue highlighting key differentiators in fans and products through ongoing product innovations, collaborators and partnerships.

“We’re thrilled to bring this campaign and new platform to our fans,” said Nugent. “Our community of Dudes are unlike anything and we plan to continue innovating through this lens in 2025 and beyond.”

Get Your House In Order

Now is The Time

What should you do to prepare for retirement if your employer has no plan? A person without a formal retirement plan can still take key steps to protect their financial future. Here are some things that you can do:

-Delay Social Security (if possible) to increase monthly payouts.

-Check eligibility for Supplemental Security (SSI). Medicaid, and other government assistance programs.

-Explore tax emptions and senior discounts of all sorts,

-Downsize and move to a less expensive area.

-Decrease subscriptions to movie channels, music channels, phone services

-Concentrate on paying off your high interest debt first, make a strict budget and stick to it.

-Consider working part-time in your field or becoming a consultant.

-Downsize or move in with someone to share expenses

-If you own a home consider a reverse mortgage.

You have heard the expression, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.” If you are still working and have a few years to go before retirement, start your own retirement plan by purchasing an Indexed Universal Life insurance policy. This type of policy provides you with growth of your money, the possibility of borrowing against the death benefit, and tax benefits.

If you have not given any thought to how you will sustain yourself after retirement, now is the time.

Bye for now,

Bren.

New campaign highlights the importance of MAINTAINING HEALTHY BLOOD PRESSURE

LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire -- Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, according to the American Heart Association. Of those, about 75% don’t have it under control and many don’t know they have it.

To raise greater awareness and reduce untreated high blood pressure, the American Heart Association, with support from Providence, is launching the “Love Your Heart. Lower the Pressure.” campaign as part of this year’s American Heart Month celebration. The goal is to encourage people to know their numbers and work with their health care team to keep their blood pressure in check and reduce their risk of serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke.

The yearlong campaign, which features the stories of real people living with high blood pressure, especially aims to reach Black and Hispanic/ Latino people.

About 55% of Black adults have high blood pressure. Black people have higher rates of more severe high blood pressure than other ethnic groups and it develops earlier in life. This is largely due to historical and systemic factors, including adverse social determinants of health, defined as the conditions in which a person is born and lives, and lack of access to health care, healthy food and other resources that support health.1

we aim to equip communities with the knowledge and resources they need to take control of their heart health. This initiative is not just about raising awareness—it’s about creating tangible change and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to the care and support necessary to lead a healthy life,” said Whitney Haggerson, Vice President of Health Equity and Medicaid, Providence.

Most people who have high blood pressure have no obvious symptoms. For people 20 years or older who have normal blood pressure, the American Heart Association recommends getting a blood pressure check once a year.

“Hypertension is a silent killer. Getting your numbers measured is the only way to know if you have it,” said Kathy Rogers, executive vice president, American Heart Association Western States. “If your blood pressure is high, it is important to work with your health care team on a plan to get it under control.”

According to the American Heart Association, reducing chronic stress, moving more and choosing nourishing food are important steps to prevent and manage high blood pressure. Keeping a healthy weight and reducing or eliminating alcohol and tobacco use are also key.

National Sleep Foundation Announces 2025 Dates for Sleep Awareness Week®

ASHINGTON, PRNewswire -- The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) announced Sleep Awareness Week® 2025 will take place from March 9-15. Sleep Awareness Week, now in its 27th year, is the NSF’s annual campaign emphasizing the importance of sleep to health and well-being and a call to action for the public to prioritize getting enough of the quality sleep they need.

Established by NSF in 1998, Sleep Awareness Week is the premier awareness and education campaign for sleep health. Each year, NSF releases the results of its hallmark Sleep in America® Poll during the campaign week. The Sleep in America Poll helps the public understand key attitudes, behaviors, and experiences with sleep health and explores a broad range of topics from aging, to exercise, to pain, to incorporating healthy sleep behaviors into daily living. Most recently, the 2024 Sleep in America Poll reinforced how sleep health and healthy sleep behaviors are strongly associated with mental health in teens.

“In our 35th year, National Sleep Foundation continues to be the authority in sleep health education for the public and any organization concerned about the connection between sleep and health,” said Steven Lerman, MD, MPH, Chair of the NSF Board of Directors. “During Sleep Awareness Week we are excited to release important results and the latest insights from our newest research with the public.”

Sleep Awareness Week begins at the start of Daylight Saving Time when most Americans change their clocks and lose an hour of sleep. “NSF is here to help anyone and everyone be their Best Slept Self® and ultimately that’s what our Sleep Awareness Week campaign and our everyday promise is all about,” said John Lopos, CEO of NSF. “If we want to improve our health and look, feel, and do our best, we can start by focusing on our sleep.”

In the Hispanic/Latino community, 45% of adult men and 27% of adult women have hypertension.2 A study shows Hispanic/Latino people have lower hypertension control rates due to systemic barriers, including access to quality and affordable healthcare and resources for monitoring and treating their hypertension outside of clinical setting.3

Among the people who shared their story for the campaign is Erika Perez, who was diagnosed with high blood pressure during her third pregnancy. Ten days after giving birth to her child, she suffered a heart attack. Years later, she had a stroke. “It was always easier for me to take care of others than to take care of myself,” said Perez, a wife, mother and grandmother who runs three restaurants with her husband. “Now I’m managing my high blood pressure, enjoying more quiet moments and putting my health first because I want to be here for my family.”

“At Providence, we are deeply committed to advancing health equity and addressing the critical health disparities that impact our communities. By supporting the American Heart Association with this hypertension awareness campaign,

“The good news is by keeping your blood pressure under control, you can prevent serious health issues like heart attack, stroke and kidney disease, and enjoy a full, healthy life,” said Rogers.

EDUCATION

Don't Forget These 6 Things on the Day of Your College Entrance Exams

(StatePoint) While every institution weighs college entrance exam scores a little bit differently, one thing is certain: doing well can only boost your application to the school of your choice. That’s why you don’t want to leave anything to chance on the day of your test. Pack these items the night before so you can grab extra sleep in the morning:

1. An extra layer: There is nothing more distracting than being hot or cold. Remember, you’ll be sitting still in the test site for a long time, so you want to make sure you’re prepared. Dress in layers so you can stay comfortable, no matter what temperature the room is.

2. A snack and water bottle: Bring a snack and a water bottle so you can stay focused on the test questions, not a growling stomach. The college entrance exam is a marathon, not a sprint, so opt for brain-healthy snacks that will keep you fueled to think straight for hours,

such as nuts, dark chocolate or berries, and avoid options that will make you sluggish or cause your blood sugar to spike and crash.

3. A calculator: Ace the math portion of the exam with a calculator you can count on. The fx9750GIII graphing calculator from Casio, for example, is approved for the SAT, PSAT, ACT and AP tests, and features an intuitive icon menu, making it incredibly easy to use, even when your work is being timed. With hundreds of hours of battery life, it’s a reliable choice for a long day of testing.

4. Writing utensils: While some college entrance exams are now being administered digitally, you’ll still want to make sure you’re equipped with several pens or freshlysharpened pencils for scratch work.

And if you are taking the test on paper, be sure to bring No. 2 pencils with erasers.

5. A testing device: If you’ll be taking the test digitally, bring a fully-charged, approved testing device and charger. The device should also have any needed testing software already installed.

6. Your identification and test ticket: Most exams require you to bring an admissions ticket and photo identification. For a smooth test day, don’t leave these items at home.

Tests like the ACT and SAT are important pieces of the college admissions puzzle. Being prepared for test day with all the items you need can help you stay focused, and perform your best.
