Alderman Yancy of the 5th Ward Holds Meeting About Walgreen’s Closure

The Fifth Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy and Executive Director of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce Tonya Trice spoke to the residents about the next steps and received feedback about what they would like to see in the space next.

While Walgreen’s owns the building, seven families own the lot. Walgreen’s has sole power in determining what goes into the space, because of the terms of the lease. Yancy proposed an ordinance to rezone the space currently occupied by Walgreen’s from commercial to residential. But, he said there are zero plans to build housing at that location.

In January of this year, Walgreen’s announced that it would close the location at 71st and Jeffery.

The chain had already closed the location at 79th and Jeffery in 2024. It was important for Yancy to get people in the room to talk about how to move forward. Yancy said the 71st and Jeffery Walgreen’s location lost around “$600,000 worth of merchandise in 2023 and when he heard about the 79th and Jeffery location closing, he knew the 71st Street location was on the chopping block. Yancy acknowledged that senior citizens in the community use the location to fill their prescriptions and purchase other items.

“I knew it would be a loss to the community, so the question for me was, ‘how do we make sure we don’t have another vacant building at 71st and Jeffery for six years,” Yancy said, referencing the closing of the Dominick’s in 2013 and the Local Market opening in its place in 2019.

Yancy said last fall, there were community safety meetings with business owners, residents and the Chicago Police Department’s 3rd District to figure out how to clean up 71st Street. The South Shore Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tonya Trice said that while the closing of the Walgreen’s is a significant blow to the community, South Shore is a resilient community. She was confident that the community would be able to find a new tenant for the Walgreen’s site.

Trice said the Chamber is looking to bring in new tenants and businesses into the community, as well as activations and plans for vacant lots, through capital

initiatives. She said the development initiatives the Chamber is embarking on is significant because the plans would generate interest and investment. Trice said the Chamber wants to bring businesses into the community that the residents want, businesses that will fill the void that will come once the Walgreen’s closes.

“We don’t want a pharmacy desert in this community, but we also want to attract something that will serve everybody in every age group in this community,” she said.

Trice said the goal of having a Walgreens Initiative is to urge the chain store to work with the community. She said the community wants to have a say, because the community has provided feedback about what it wants through surveys, studies, plans and community meetings.

“It is time now that we provide businesses that will solve the demands and needs of the residents of the South Shore community, but we will not be able to get that unless we all work together,” she said.

Residents voiced feedback that they wanted a community center, a sit-down restaurant, as well as asking if a pharmacy could be placed in the Local Market grocery store. Residents were adamant that they did not want a Dollar Tree.

The 71st and Jeffery location is set to close between now and Feb. 27th. In a statement, Walgreen’s said, “Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy.

However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs. It is never an easy decision to close a store. We know that our stores are important to the communities that we serve, and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, like those here in Chicago, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions. We intend to redeploy the majority of our team members from those stores that we close.”

Poetry Foundation Spring Event Season Celebrates Lineages, Collective Power, and the Midwest

CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- The Poetry Foundation announces its roster of free public events for the spring 2025 season under the theme “Power Lines,” inspired by the landmark anthology of the same name released by the Guild Literary Complex 25 years ago. The electrifying event season highlights new work by Chicago and Midwest presses, partner organizations, and authors.

Tapping into Collective Power

The season kicks off on February 27 with Archive(s) of Style, an event at the Poetry Foundation honoring Black History Month and Audre Lorde’s birthday. Poets Cheryl Clarke, Harmony Holiday, Nikki Patin, and Natalia Molebatsi introduce an intergenerational lineage of Black queer feminist poetry with readings from their latest titles.

March 6 offers reflections from Like a Hammer: Poets on Mass Incarceration, Haymarket Books’ anthology of writers speaking on the United States prison-industrial complex. Editor Diana Marie Delgado and contributors, including John Murillo and Nicole Sealey, will read from the anthology.

In partnership with the Center for Native Futures, the Poetry Foundation celebrates the release of Blood Wolf Moon by Elise Paschen, who appears with Osage visual artists June Carpenter and Lydia Cheshewalla on April 10. The event also features Esther Belin, whose guest-edited issue of Poetry magazine, Diné Poetics, publishes in March and includes a special roundtable on Indigenous poetics from poets writing in Diné, Osage, Delaware, Nez Perce, and other Indigenous languages.

Celebrations continue in May when Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize recipient Kimiko Hahn launches her retrospective collection Ghost

Forest with a reading alongside three other poets with new books: Sarah Ghazal Ali, Mónica de la Torre, and Rosalie Moffett. On May 22, the Poetry Foundation commemorates the 25th anniversary of the anthology Power Lines, an assemblage of Chicago’s spoken word poets and poets of letters published by Tia Chucha Press, the publishing branch of the Guild Literary Complex. Featured readers include Ana Castillo, Angela Jackson, Tyehimba Jess, Simone Muench, Mark Turcotte, anthology editors Julie Parson Nesbitt, Luis Rodriguez, and Michael Warr, and others.

The Forms & Features workshop series connects poets of all experience levels to and through poetry. Generative workshops on forms, techniques, and themes are offered throughout the year, both online and in person. Workshop participants are invited to share their work in a celebratory Community Reading on June 12. Monthly book clubs offer another chance to connect over poetry from anywhere.

“Power lines run through our veins, an energetic current connecting us to the past and fueling us toward the futures of our imagination,” said public programs manager and season curator, Noa Fields. “We invite you to tap in with us throughout this exciting new season of events that amplify poetry and celebrate poets.”

There is groundbreaking news in the world of Alzheimer’s and dementia research, with promising new treatments now on the horizon for those living with these conditions. These advancements bring hope and offer new ways to manage the disease more effectively. With multiple treatments now approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s essential for patients and their families to learn about available options and consult with doctors to make informed decisions.

Currently, FDA-approved medications for Alzheimer’s fall into two key categories:

1. Drugs that temporarily ease symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Drugs that alter the disease’s progression, offering the potential to slow cognitive decline.

Drugs That Treat Symptoms

As Alzheimer’s progresses, brain cells deteriorate and lose connections, resulting in worsening cognitive and noncognitive symptoms. While medications in this category don’t stop the damage Alzheimer’s causes to brain cells, they can help stabilize or alleviate symptoms temporarily.

These treatments focus on improving memory, cognition, and dementia-related behaviors. Additionally, therapies are available to address changes in sleep patterns and behavioral concerns that often arise with Alzheimer’s. Drugs That Change Disease Progression

A new wave of treatments is offering hope in slowing Alzheimer’s disease progression. These medications focus on reducing cognitive decline and preserving daily function in people living with the condition.

Among the most promising of these treatments is Donanemab (Kisunla™), a therapy that targets beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, delivered via an intravenous (IV) infusion every four weeks. Clinical trials have shown that Donanemab significantly slows cognitive and functional decline in individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s, such as those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia.

Following Donanemab’s approval, another promising therapy, Lecanemab (Leqembi®), was also granted FDA approval. Delivered as an IV infusion every two weeks, Lecanemab has demonstrated similar success in reducing the decline of cognitive function in early-stage Alzheimer’s patients. Both Donanemab and Lecanemab focus on clearing harmful amyloid plaques from the brain, which has been linked to the progression of Alzheimer’s. However, like any medication, side effects such as headaches and amyloidrelated imaging abnormalities (ARIA) are reported, which require close monitoring by healthcare professionals. The Importance of Early Diagnosis

An early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is crucial in maximizing treatment effectiveness. The earlier the diagnosis, the more treatment options become available, as many medications are most effective in the early stages of the disease. Alzheimer’s progresses in stages, ranging from asymptomatic and mild cognitive impairment to more severe stages where daily activities are significantly affected.

Seeking a diagnosis early provides a greater chance to explore potential treatment plans and ensure that the right course of action is taken.

Financial considerations for multigenerational households

For many Black, Hispanic and Latino families, as well as other cultures, multigenerational living is a cherished aspect of home life. It can also be good for your family’s overall wellbeing.

Research indicates there can be financial benefits to multigenerational living, and when executed intentionally, having multiple family members under the same roof can potentially help improve health outcomes, reduce loneliness for older adults and bolster educational outcomes for children.

While multigenerational living has many positives, it also comes with a unique set of financial matters and planning needs. From saving and budgeting to dividing costs and estate planning, navigating the financial landscape of a multigenerational home calls for foresight and strategy.

Below are some financial considerations for people living in multigenerational households and those considering moving in with family members.

Helping to build family wealth

In a 2022 study, the Pew Research Center found people in multigenerational households were less likely to live in poverty, and some multigenerational households had more earners than the nonmultigenerational households, which can help provide a safety net in case someone loses a job. It can also encourage homeownership -- 14% percent of all home buyers in the study said their purchase was motivated by a desire to accommodate multiple generations in their family.

Having diverse financial needs

by dividing costs such as mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries and household expenses based on each member’s financial capacity and usage. A sense of transparency can be maintained among family members by openly discussing financial contributions and expenses.

Find balance between cultural values and financial health

Cultural traditions and familial structures can also play

over spending habits and adapting to changing income levels or unexpected expenses are necessary to maintain financial stability in multigenerational households.

Future planning is vital

Estate plans should be tailored to accommodate the financial needs and goals of each generation within the household and strategies should be developed for transferring ownership of businesses or properties to ensure continuity and preserve the family’s legacy. Make sure to compile essential legal documents -- including wills, trusts, powers of attorney and health care directives -- to outline the distribution of assets and clarify end-of-life wishes.

The bottom line

Multigenerational households can foster financial harmony and wellbeing by accounting for their individual financial goals and their shared responsibilities. Family members should be clear about plans, needs and expectations to promote financial stability and satisfaction for all. Communicating about these issues early can help avoid tension later on.

By addressing these considerations holistically and prioritizing open discussion and collaboration, multigenerational households can build a solid financial foundation, helping them achieve prosperity and security for their family members now and in the future.

Savings and budgeting plans can be more complicated because of the wide range of ages among family members. Seniors might require more for health care and retirement, for example, while children can bring daycare and tuition costs. Be flexible with your planning to accommodate different saving and budgeting needs and set short- and long-term goals for your savings with all generations in mind.

Expenses should be handled with fairness and equity

Multigenerational households have to ensure fairness

a significant role in money management, and it’s important to consider how multigenerational living can impact family wealth. Cultural heritage can shape financial attitudes and practices within multigenerational households, including saving habits, investment strategies and perceptions of wealth. Understanding how your cultural values connect to your beliefs and practices related to money can be essential for effective financial management within diverse family structures.

Communication is key to managing conflict and disagreement

The more people living in a home, the more likely they’ll face conflicting financial priorities. Navigating disagreements

In New Book, Novae CEO Shows How Fintech Can Change the Future for All

CONYERS, Ga., PRNewswire -- The latest book by Reco M. McCambry, founder of Inc 5000 company Novae, hits the market this weekend. In “Fintech is the Future,” McCambry introduces readers to the worlds of financial technology and financial education—and how proper use of financial technology can make anyone wealthy.

In “Fintech is the Future: The Perfect Business,” McCambry introduces the reader to the business of financial technology, including the rationale he used when building his company to become one of America’s fastest-growing businesses. He explains how the marriage of financial technology and financial education with a direct sales business model helped his family become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, and how

similar fintech products and business models can help anyone to do the same.

McCambry is a realist—instead of offering “secrets” or “weird tricks” to make the reader “effortlessly wealthy,” he lays down hard examples of the power of financial education, and in the vein of Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad, McCambry explains how the knowledge gap between the children of rich families and poor families perpetuates economic inequality. McCambry then lays out some prominent examples of how advances in financial technology can close these gaps—and how entrepreneurs can become wealthy by selling these products.

The book’s subtitle, “The Perfect Business to Build Wealth and Bless People at the Same Time,” refers to McCambry’s overall goal in building Novae. Research McCambry conducted during his

MBA program, combined with his lived experience in the direct sales industry, convinced him that the widespread dissemination of financial education and technological assistance could overcome many historical barriers to economic inequality.

And he has always recognized that this doesn’t just mean the Black community. Over the years, Novae has become distinguished by its willingness and ability to provide financial services anywhere that traditional banks have not adequately served. McCambry has hired corporate staff from various immigrant communities and covered the Biden-era expansion of Small Business Administration loans to underserved rural areas in his work as a Forbes Business Council member.

“Fintech is the Future” touches on all these points, sharing a taste of the power of financial education and the key points behind why the development of financial technology is so important to the way money moves. The book, which is written both for entrepreneurs looking to break into the fintech space and for consumers who may be struggling with debt or credit scores, is available through Amazon and other retailers.

MICHAEL B. JORDAN USHERS DAVID YURMAN’S CHEVRON COLLECTION INTO ITS NEXT CHAPTER

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- David Yurman, America’s foremost luxury jewelry brand, is pleased to unveil its Spring 2025 Chevron campaign, starring acclaimed actor, director, producer, and global brand ambassador Michael B. Jordan.

David Yurman’s new men’s campaign tells the story of a modern man’s journey of self-expression and the pursuit of excellence. Against the backdrop of Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City, renowned luxury fashion photographer Tyrone Lebon and film director Frank Lebon highlight the contrast of light and shadow across a series of film images and video that see Jordan walk with intention and determination—a symbolic nod to his illustrious film career and the Chevron collection itself.

“I am inspired by the way David Yurman stays true to itself while continuing to evolve,” said Jordan, who was styled by longtime stylist Jason Bolden for the campaign. “From David and Sybil’s artistic partnership with each other, to their ongoing collaboration with their son Evan, I look forward to continue working alongside a brand that values vision and innovation.”

Jordan’s next film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) will premiere globally in theaters on April 18th. Following his successful directorial debut with Creed III, Jordan is set to expand his filmmaking career with his sophomore feature, The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios.

Originally launched in 2007, the Chevron Collection takes inspiration from ancient architecture and art and has been skillfully reinterpreted into the modern, sculptural design seen today. Viewed in relation to one another, each half of the Chevron motif is a mirror image of the signature Cable: a flattened reflection of the brand’s DNA and the pursuit of excellence within design and craftsmanship. Mirroring the campaign itself, the iconic Chevron pattern is a play on light and dark–with deeply carved valleys contrasting against highly polished flutes. Com-

prising of bracelets, rings and especially tags, the Chevron pattern has quickly become a staple design for the men’s collections, the fastest growing category of the business.

David Yurman’s partnership with Jordan began in Spring 2024 with the launch of the brand’s first-ever men’s high jewelry collection, The Vault. Building on the brand’s momentum and leadership in the men’s jewelry space, the new campaign underscores David Yurman’s ongoing connection to influential cultural figures who embody individuality and dedication to one’s craft–further solidifying the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and artistry. Like David Yurman himself, Jordan is in a constant state of evolution as he transitions from actor to producer to director.

“Michael’s unwavering confidence and authenticity, both in front of and behind the camera, reflect his strong work ethic and character. Through this new campaign, we hope to inspire our audiences to follow the same passion that Jordan does in shaping his destiny,” said President and Chief Creative Officer Evan Yurman.

HEYDUDE Partners with Heisman Trophy Winner Travis Hunter

WESTWOOD, Mass., PRNewswire -- HEYDUDE, the popular casual footwear brand that is known for blending individual style and lightweight comfort into every pair of shoes, is launching a new global campaign, “Unlike Anything”. The campaign features rising football star and Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, who continues to redefine what it means to defy expectations and pave his own path on and off the football field.

The “Unlike Anything” campaign is an important milestone for the brand, aimed at embracing the very things that make our fans truly unlike anything. Celebrating those who are defiantly comfortable in their own shoes, creative, confident and uniquely themselves.

Hunter was one of the most dynamic players in college football history, as a unanimous All-American excelling at both cornerback and wide receiver. His historic senior season had him named AP College Football Player of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner, and Academic All-American. He is expected to be a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“We’re excited to finally debut ‘Unlike Anything’ because it’s a true celebration of HEYDUDE and the community of Dudes around us,” said Paul Nugent, CMO, HEYDUDE. “That ethos is ingrained in our DNA and has been our north star from product drops, partnerships and everything in between. We knew Travis could really bring this mantra to life in a unique and dynamic way, so once we found out he was already a long-time brand fan, it felt like a no-brainer.”

Although Hunter’s versatility on the football field captured national attention, it is equally how he conducts himself off the field – his unique style, confidence and ability to challenge norms — that perfectly embodies the “Unlike Anything” positioning.

A genuine fan of the brand, Hunter will show-off his more casual side in this campaign, being captured off the field doing the things he loves - fishing, gaming and unwinding after practice. The campaign will feature him in various HEYDUDE Wally styles, including the Wally Stretch Sox and Wally Slipper, that provide lightweight comfort.

“For me, being great starts with how I spend my time off the field to recharge and focus,” said Travis Hunter. “Whether I am relaxing or on a boat fishing, my HEYDUDE Wally shoes bring a sense of comfort and confidence that allows me to really live in the moment and find that balance. That’s why I’m so excited to show off my HEYDUDE Wally shoes that have been a part of my life for a long time.”

The partnership with Hunter will be the first of many to come for the brand under the “Unlike Anything” platform, and will include new Wally product drops, coordinated social media efforts, and in-store and digital marketing. The campaign will pave new ways for HEYDUDE to continue highlighting key differentiators in fans and products through ongoing product innovations, collaborators and partnerships.

“We’re thrilled to bring this campaign and new platform to our fans,” said Nugent. “Our community of Dudes are unlike anything and we plan to continue innovating through this lens in 2025 and beyond.”

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Grammy-winning artist and Metro Atlanta resident Ann Nesby (Queen Sugar, The Fighting Temptations), former lead singer of Sounds of Blackness, brings her storytelling prowess as executive producer and narrator of CIRILO, A Legacy Untold. The film spotlights civil rights leader Cirilo McSween. Nesby, known for her powerhouse vocals, continues her musical momentum with her latest single, “My Man,” co-written with R.L. of platinum-selling R&B group NEXT. The song is in rotation on XM Radio’s Heart & Soul and iHeartRadio, with national expansion underway.

A Civil Rights Hidden Figure

Directed and produced by Justin O. Cooper, CIRILO, A Legacy Untold uncovers the story of Cirilo McSween, a Panamanian immigrant and key figure in civil rights and economic empowerment. As Chief Economic Advisor for Operation Breadbasket, McSween worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and Andrew Young—three civil rights icons with deep Atlanta ties—to advance civil rights

through economic initiatives.

McSween also helped secure the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, returning control of the Panama Canal to Panama—one of President Jimmy Carter’s landmark achievements. “This film shines a light on an overlooked leader who financed the civil rights movement and shaped economic policy and diplomacy,” said Cooper.

Get Your House In Order

Now is The Time

What should you do to prepare for retirement if your employer has no plan? A person without a formal retirement plan can still take key steps to protect their financial future. Here are some things that you can do:

-Delay Social Security (if possible) to increase monthly payouts.

-Check eligibility for Supplemental Security (SSI). Medicaid, and other government assistance programs.

-Explore tax emptions and senior discounts of all sorts,

-Downsize and move to a less expensive area.

-Decrease subscriptions to movie channels, music channels, phone services

-Concentrate on paying off your high interest debt first, make a strict budget and stick to it.

-Consider working part-time in your field or becoming a consultant.

-Downsize or move in with someone to share expenses

-If you own a home consider a reverse mortgage.

You have heard the expression, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.” If you are still working and have a few years to go before retirement, start your own retirement plan by purchasing an Indexed Universal Life insurance policy. This type of policy provides you with growth of your money, the possibility of borrowing against the death benefit, and tax benefits.

If you have not given any thought to how you will sustain yourself after retirement, now is the time.

Bye for now, Bren.

The Hampton University Museum Reopens with Expanded Exhibits, Enhanced Visitor Experience

HAMPTON, Va., PRNewswire -- Hampton University proudly announces the re-grand opening of the Hampton University Museum, the nation’s oldest African American museum and the oldest museum in the Commonwealth of Virginia, after an extensive revitalization that introduces new exhibits and an enriched visitor experience. Established in 1868, the museum remains an unparalleled cultural treasure, housing one of the most comprehensive collections of African, African American, and Indigenous art in the United States.

The reopening unveils a dynamic expansion of the museum’s galleries, showcasing newly acquired works alongside timeless pieces that define the institution’s legacy. Visitors will experience an immersive journey through history, culture, and artistic expression with a refreshed layout designed to deepen engagement with the museum’s extraordinary collections.

“For more than 150 years, the Hampton University Museum has been a national leader in preserving and celebrating African American and Indigenous art and culture,” said Lt. Gen (retired) Darrell K. Williams, president of Hampton University. “This reopening marks a new chapter in our commitment to education, preservation, and community engagement.”

130 years of existence, the museum has been a guardian of artwork and artifacts spanning the entirety of the African American experience while also showcasing elements of Indigenous and Polynesian cultures as well.

Hampton was the recipient of a gift of hundreds of artworks from the Harmon Foundation in 1967, which includes representation of most of the important artists from the Harlem Renaissance into the early 1960s. The Museum also houses the Countee and Ida Cullen Art Collection; a group of 29 works of art acquired from the widow of the famed Harlem Renaissance poet. Among the most outstanding holdings are works by three important figures connected to the visual arts at Hampton: John T. Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, and Samella S. Lewis. In addition to the African American Fine Art Collection, the Museum features African, Native American, and the Hampton History Galleries as permanent exhibitions.

New exhibits at the museum include a Veteran’s display honoring notable Hampton alumni with impressive service to the Armed Forces, a display featuring costumes on long term loan by Oscar-winning designer Ruth E. Carter, and new additions to the African and Native American displays throughout the museum.

The Hampton University Museum, which is free and open to the public, is composed of the world’s first collection of African American fine art, which began with the 1894 acquisition of two paintings by Henry O. Tanner. One of these paintings, The Banjo Lesson, is acknowledged as the most admired work by an African American artist. With over

Advancing Art Through Adversity

At the turn of the century, as Jim Crow laws and segregation spread across the South, the Hampton University Museum persevered through these societal challenges, providing a vital platform for African American artistry and expression.

Throughout the 20th Century, African American art faced significant disregard and disrespect due to a combination of systemic racism, exclusion from mainstream art institutions, and deeply entrenched societal biases. African American artists were often denied access to prominent galleries and museums, which were the primary spaces for showcasing and legitimizing art. Few institutions considered Black art as part of the American cultural canon. Furthermore, depictions of African Americans in mainstream media included themes like ‘blackface,’ ‘minstrels,’ and other derogatory imagery that negatively impacted African American expression.

When African American art was acknowledged, it was often viewed through a reductive lens, focusing on themes of poverty, oppression, or folklore rather than recognizing

the full spectrum of artistic expression. Additionally, African American artwork has historically been criticized as “primitive” or “folk art,” diminishing its complexity and innovation.

Despite these challenges, the Hampton University Museum champions the beauty and relevance of Black creativity.

The Hampton University Museum is directed by Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward. Previously, she was Director of the York Bailey Museum, at Penn Center on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Thaxton-Ward previously served on the board of Arts for Learning and the Virginia Association of Museums board and the Commission on African American History Education in the Commonwealth, appointed by Governor Ralph Northam. She is currently a Commissioner for the Virginia Arts Commission appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin and serves on the board of the Barrett-Peake Foundation.

As Director, she has secured funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Save America’s Treasures, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Luce Foundation, Art Bridges Foundation, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in partnership with the Chrysler Museum of Art.

An Experience of a Lifetime in One Afternoon

From breathtaking African masks to contemporary masterpieces by artists like Jacob Lawrence and Samella Lewis, the museum’s galleries are a vibrant Kaleidescope of cultures. Where else can you take a journey from 19th-century America to the African savannah, then hop over to the pacific islands of Hawaii —all in one afternoon? With over 9,000 works in its collection, every visit to the Hampton University Museum is a chance to uncover something new.

Artwork that tells the Story of America’s Rich History

Every piece in the museum tells a story. Museum goers can step into the lives of trailblazing artists like Henry Ossawa Tanner and John Biggers, whose works capture the beauty, struggle, and triumph of the Black experience. Furthermore, the Museum allows guests to explore Native American textiles, African artifacts, and even Asian ceramics that connect global histories in unexpected ways. This isn’t just art—it’s a conversation with the past, present, and future

Today, as conversations about racial equity and representation in the arts gain momentum, the Hampton University Museum continues to play a critical role in shaping these dialogues. Through its exhibitions, educational programs, and partnerships, the museum seeks to inspire a new generation of artists and art lovers to celebrate and support African

National Society of Black Engineers Celebrates Milestone 50th Anniversary During 2025 Annual Convention

ALEXANDRIA, Va., PRNewswire -- The National Society of Black Engineers® (NSBE®), one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the U.S., is excited to announce its 2025 Annual Convention (“NSBE 2025”). Taking place from March 5–9 at Chicago’s McCormick Place, North America’s top convention center, NSBE’s largest convening is centered on the theme “Inspire! Excel! Impact!” this year, which reflects the organization’s mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

Last year’s convention saw roughly 17,000 attendees, and the organization is looking to attract even more in 2025 as they celebrate “Five Decades of Black Excellence Engineered.” Through workshops, panel discussions and interactive activities, attendees will experience unparalleled opportunities and be given tools to excel in academia, Corporate America, entrepreneurship and beyond. Event sponsors, including Microsoft, will be on-site, ready to engage with young professionals and

foster meaningful relationships.

The 2025 Annual Convention is a four-day event with an anticipated 400-plus Career Fair exhibitors and more than 20,000 attendees participating in scores of activities, including the Opening, General and Closing Sessions.

A standout feature of the Annual Convention is the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Conference, designed to support the next generation of engineers, featuring motivational speakers and accomplished leaders sharing their journeys and insights. Youth participants can also compete in educational activities and events like the Ten80 NSBE National STEM Challenge, a racing competition featuring radio-controlled cars; the VEX IQ Competition, a robot engineering challenge; and the KidWind Competition, which works to make renewable energy widely accessible.

Members can visit the NSBE Legacy Museum, which will have artifacts and exhibitions from the organization’s storied history, and a newly released coffee table book chronicling the Society’s background and

growth. NSBE’s founders and key stakeholders will be present to highlight the organization’s legacy and the transformative impact it has made on the field of engineering and beyond. The organization’s signature recognition event, the NSBE Golden Torch Awards, honors the best and brightest in STEM, with categories highlighting corporate diversity, academic success, community impact and more.

“As we celebrate 50 years of NSBE, this year’s Annual Convention is more than just a gathering; it’s a testament to the resilience, brilliance and impact of Black engineers across generations,” said Janeen Uzzell, NSBE’s CEO.

NSBE was formed in 1975 as a response to the lack of representation and success of Black people in higher education engineering programs and, thus, in the workforce. NSBE 2025 continues the legacy of fostering equality, professional growth and abundant opportunities for Black students and professionals pursuing engineering and other STEM careers. Through grant programs, mentorship, and educational resources, we are committed to increasing minority lawyer representation and ensuring that all voices are heard in the courts. The Foundation is grateful to the owners, management, and staff of Joe’s for hosting this event, which has not been held at the restaurant previously. The students of Amelia Earhart School will be the first to dine at this establishment.

Attorney Theodore “Ted” London remarked , “When I was in 6th grade, we had a field trip to a fine-dining restaurant, which had a profound effect on me and my understanding that there are broader culinary experiences available.
