Engineered to accommodate mule-pulled packet boats, the canal stretched 60 ft. wide, 6 ft deep and was completely handdug by the hard-laboring Irish, German, Scandinavian and later Eastern European immigrants who settled the nearby Canal towns. Seventeen locks were constructed to accommodate the changes in elevation, and a trip down the Canal could take anywhere from 17-24 hours. Accommodations on the packet boats were sparse, but did include meals and some rather uncomfortable sleeping quarters. Notables such as Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Charles Dickens, and Nathaniel Hawthorn were

Today, the Illinois & Michigan Canal is a living history museum dedicated to the great economic prosperity and the cultural diversity brought forth to the region. Historical sites, interpretive parks and installments dot the landscape of the I&M Canal towpath. Visitors can see the restored Locktenders House at Channahon State Park. On the National Register of Historic Places, The Fitzpatrick House at Lewis University in Lockport was once home to Patrick Fitzpatrick, a successful farmer, businessman, and important figure amongst the Irish immigrant community.
