Mrs. Eliaser's physics students beta-testing their designs for Tuesday's big event, where cameras flashed, juniors shrieked, and onlookers jockeyed for position on the viewing balcony. Mrs. Eliaser's junior and senior physics classes culminated a month's study of momentum and collision dynamics by dropping raw eggs from the second floor, protected by containers of their own design. "At first, it looked like our design was too

flimsy to survive," reported a proud Gavi Schankerman, above, displaying his unbroken egg, "but Hello Kitty tape fixes everything." This year's classes boasted 12 out of 21 eggs surviving the fall, thanks to the ingenuity of their intricate containers. Many groups opted for a pyramidal structure designed to keep the egg as far away from the impact zone as possible; other teams trusted in the almighty cone whose crumple zone would extend the impact time to safe levels. Congratulations to all of the participants, and apologies to Mr. Griffith, whose inspiring Lishma session on self-esteem was repeatedly disturbed by the noise of victory parades conga-dancing down the hallway! Be sure to check out the Egg Drop museum in the third-floor physics lab, where the 21 teams documented their design principles and ideas for the future in entertaining and artistic posters!
P.O. Corner The P.O. is pleased to continue the gift card "Gelt" program. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. Faculty and staff can also buy Gelt to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. By buying things you ordinarily purchase anyway, you can earn money which will be credited to your family or class for designated school trips. Contact Sheri Sandrof at ssandrof@cjhs.org or call her at 847.324.3723.
IFYC Sponsor Breakfast What's better than a birthday celebration with friends? Celebrate your student's birthday or other milestone with a special breakfast at CJHS.
On Monday during lunch, IFYC hosted Father Corey and two students from St. Viator High School to share with our student body some of their Christmas traditions and customs. We learned about customs and rules regarding Catholic mass, and something historical about the origins of Santa Claus. "It was so interesting to learn about a holiday we hear so much about, but never really get to learn about," exclaimed junior Sari Mishell. Afterward, the students that attended the event were treated to some international holiday sweets courtesy of IFYC.

The moles are here! The Tenth Annual CJHS Mole Contest held in Mr. Urick's chemistry classes produced a fantastic bunch of "moles," now on display in the library for your entertainment. Each year, Mr. Urick offers his students a chance to make stuffed animals and wicked puns as a bonus project on the quantitative chemistry "mole," the standard measurement of molecular quantity, based on Avogadro's number of particles. Students, however, have fun with the idea ans design a "mole theme." Bonus points are awarded to all who participate---and the top-3 moles (based on a school-wide vote) receive additional bonus points. The Top Three Moles of 2013 were:

Jeremy Goodman's mighty shot against Ellison
The men's basketball team is on a roll! Varsity defeated Holy Trinity 8667 on Monday night; faithful sportscaster Isaac Johnston reports, "It was, as always, a huge team effort as Jeremy Goodman led the way with 16 points, and Avidan Halivni and Hillel Schwartz each chipped in 14." The boys went on to beat CICS Ellison Wednesday night 59-57 on a buzzerbeating put back by Jeremy Goodman, for 2 of his 11 points on the night. Josh Newlander led the scoring with 17. Our varsity record is now 4-1 and 3-0 in the Chicago Prep Conference. The sophomores struggled against Holy Trinity and CICS Ellison, but continue to improve, and are practicing hard for next week's games against St. Benedict and North Shore Country Day. Go Tigers!

Alumni Trivia What up, Young Judaea Midwest? Who's this with Mollie Kramer, Alex Cope, Maddy Reisler, Danny Gabel, and Benny Gabel at Camp Henry Horner for the winter convention?
P.S. Gavi Schankerman was also at the Winter Convention, but they couldn't catch him for the photo op!
Time Use Study Students--if you're reading this, why not take a minute to fill out your Time Use Study? The Va'ad and the administration want to document how CJHS students spend their time at work, at play, and in those few fleeting periods we call sleep. Help us prioritize those assignment calendars!
DEAP Drive to Help Detained Immigrants CJHS Direct Service team is collecting canned & boxed food, toilet paper, paper towels, women's socks & underwear, and men's socks for the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants. We hope to help ease the transition for immigrants released from detention. Please bring your donations in and place them in the Drives box outside of the Beit Knesset!
STAND UPdate Gabe Wacks reports, "Last Sunday, the Human Rights Watch charged Cambodian authorities with operating illegal detention centers for drug users and other "undesirables." Those who are interned in these centers are often subject to physical abuse, torture, and sexual assault. In addition, drug users, beggars, homeless individuals, and children are held in these sites, where they do not receive treatment or rehabilitation, but are instead beaten or assigned to forced labor projects. Based on reports from 33 former detainees from these so-called "rehabilitation" centers, Cambodian officials frequently flood these places with street children and other poverty-stricken people convicted of drug abuse, usually before foreign officials arrive in Cambodia. Hundreds to thousands of people are estimated to be interned in these centers, and over 10% of those interned are estimated to be children. Victims are humiliated by being forced to crawl or stand in septic water pits, and female detainees face sexual assault or violence from male guards. Despite repeated calls from various UN organizations to close these detention centers, Cambodian authorities have neither responded nor investigated."
Alumni Trivia Joelle Swatez ('11) is the senior adviser for Young Judaea Midwest, and she was delighted to see so many of her CJ peeps at the Winter Convention! Joelle is a junior at Indiana University, where she is majoring in Jewish Studies. Joelle spent this past summer as a Lewis Intern for the Jewish Federation here in Chicago; back on campus, she coordinates the IU chapter of Challah for Hunger and is the publications editor for the campus Israel Public Affairs Commitee. Good for you, Joelle!
Sponsored Breakfast Happy birthday to Natalie Ecanow. Many thanks to her family for sponsoring bagels in her honor.
A Taste of Torah: Vayechi Last week, we ended the Cain and Abel cycle with Judah's impassioned declaration that he was his brother's keeper, and that anyone seeking to interfere with Benjamin's life would have to go through him. This week, another drama in the Genesis saga threatens to be re-enacted, as a patriarch chooses to raise the younger of the two brothers over the elder. Joseph, painfully aware of the imminent danger, tries to correct his father's error, but Jacob--nay, say rather Israel--persists. Israel tells his gifted son that he has learned from his mistakes and is not trying to play favorites between his grandsons. Israel blesses both brothers simultaneously and equally. He fully acknowledges Menashe's luminous destiny. Israel seeks to replace patriarchy with meritocracy, to bless the more distinguished child with his right hand regardless of the order of birth. In Israel, a younger child may be great without threatening the esteem of the elder. Both Ephraim and Menashe feel honored and appreciated; both acknowledge the sterling future in store for the other, and neither feels that his success is contingent on being the best, the oldest, or the only favorite son in the family. And so we too bless our sons, that they may emulate the first two Abrahamitic brothers ever to live together in understanding and admiration, "May God make you like Ephraim and Menashe."
