Community News and Events Opportunity for Relationship with a Holocaust Survivor

A senior night to remember for men's tennis! The team closed the season with a final win over Lake Forest Academy. The afternoon began with an emotional and moving ceremony honoring the team's seniors, for whom this was their last match as members of the CJHS tennis team. All three seniors, Adam Taitz, Ari Spellman, and David Kosman picked up personal wins in the team's triumphant victory. Men's baseball keeps rolling! The baseball team defeated CICS Northtown 9-4 in a lightning-shortened 5 innings! Jon Silvers started his first game and pitched excellently, earning his first "W" in a Tigers uniform. Everyone contributed on offense in the 9-run onslaught. Women's soccer concludes a great season! The Lady Tigers suffered a tough loss in their tournament this week, falling to Woodlands by a score of 4-3. The girls can look back on a high-scoring season of phenomenal teamwork and camaraderie!

Bible Students Discuss Sacred Architecture

The Generation to Generation program, affiliated with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, is seeking new members. The program is designed to match Holocaust survivors with younger (adult) partners who are interested in learning about the survivors' experiences before, during and after the Holocaust. The younger partners will one day share these stories of survival with future generations through the Speakers' Bureau of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. The Speakers' Bureau is a group (currently only consisting of people who have survived the Holocaust) who personally explain their story of survival to groups of visitors who come to the museum. The Generation to Generation program meets about four times a year as a group-both for socializing and to learn from each other-and the remainder of the year you will meet independently with your partner to learn his or her story, and to get to know him or her on a personal level.

Last week, Rabbi Belgrad's freshman-sophomore Chumash class benefitted from a visit from CJHS alumni parent Amy Reichert, a "CJHS mother" (Noa & Benjy Fleishacker) and architect who works, amongst other things, with the design of sacred space. Amy's presentation deepened the students' knowledge of and appreciation for the design of the Mishkan - the ancient Tabernacle - as she engaged them in considering the ways in which design can enhance spirituality. Her presentation included a comparison of the Mishkan with the Tower of Babel and the pyramids of Egypt.

thank the general STAND board for their hard work. I also want to express my gratitude to Dr. Schorsch-- without her constant advice and guidance, this club would not be nearly as successful. I would like to announce that STAND's next president will be Noa Gordon-Guterman, who I am absolutely sure will do an incredible job in continuing STAND's efforts in the future. It has truly been a great honor being the president of STAND this year, and I have learned an immeasurable amount in terms of how to lead and direct a group of people. CJHS Alumna Yali Derman ('09) was spotlighted on the official blog of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago this week. Now a registered nurse, Yali has returned to work at the same hospital where she was treated for leukemia as a girl. The nurses who once cared for her are now her colleagues, and Yali is now working to care for and support kids who are going through many of the same challenges she once faced. Yishar Kocheych, Yali! A Taste of Torah The mitzvah of counting the Omer between Pesach and Shavuot comes from Leviticus 23:15-16, p'sukim that are familiar to CJHS because we say them as part of the introduction to counting the Omer. We read: "And from the day on which you bring the sheaf of elevation offering - the day after the sabbath - you shall count off seven weeks. They must be complete: you must count until the day after the seventh week fifty days; then you shall bring an offering of new grain (mincha hadasha) to the Lord." Rabbi Ephraim Luntschitz, known better by his pen-name, the Keli Yakar, links this grain offering to the day of the giving of Torah, because Torah needs to be new each and every day for anyone who studies it. The Keli

Yakar notes explicitly that the Torah does not speak about Shavuot as the anniversary of Revelation. But each day, one's relationship to Torah needs to be renewed. And this is not just any offering to God, it is one that necessitates human involvement in the process - humans grind wheat into flour. Following the metaphor, Torah, like the mincha sacrifice, inherently involves human contributions. There is no greater way to live the Keli Yakar's words than to teach Torah at CJHS on a daily basis. In the words of our Rabbis, each day, students discover new tastes of the learning, which, in turn, nourish the teachers. The Torah indeed is a new mincha offering on each day. -Rabbi Zachary Silver

Alumni Trivia Jill Merrick ('12) says: "I'm a psychology and educational studies double major here at Macalester. In terms of big things I'm doing...I'm doing psych research in a Morality and Social Cognition lab and plan to work in a developmental psychology lab at Northwestern over the summer, I'm a sophomore leader for a first year community service and reflection program, and I'm a member of the Macalester Multifaith Council. I'm also the chair of a college mentoring program that goes into one of the local schools once a week and works with high school juniors in an AVID classroom, and volunteers with immigrants to help them prepare for the citizenship test."
