morning crew, supporting 14 times its own weight, while Becca Abrams and Maya Michaelewicz's wholly original design boasted 15. Rose Johnson and Azeyah Boyd's featherweight Pratt edged ahead in the efficiency game with its minimalist design, while Josh Lederman's modified Howe put its heavy weight to good use!

The P.O. is pleased to continue the gift card "Gelt" program. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. Faculty and staff can also buy Gelt to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. By buying things you ordinarily purchase anyway, you can earn money which will be credited to your family or class for designated school trips. Contact Sheri Sandrof at ssandrof@cjhs.org or call her at 847.324.3723.

In second place for this year is Max Gruenberg and Matt Dulberg's doublelayer Warren, supporting 31 times its own weight, while our new junior champions, Seth Wein and Jake Lankford were seen doing the victory dance over their doubledecker creation, whose Warren overdeck and Howe underdeck supported 39 times its own weight.

Candy? Glittery posters? Sign-up sheets? When these sights fill the hallways of CJHS, it must be time for the annual Student Activities Fair. On Thursday, student groups new and old showed freshmen, transfer students, and everyone else the best of what they have to offer. In addition to the sweets which are always a fan favorite, groups found other creative ways of luring potential members to their tables. The Engineering Club deconstructed a computer for onlookers to gawk at and fiddle with. The United States Politics Club handed out issues of their first Policy Forum of the year, tackling the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri. Members of Va'ad Yisrael sold sleek bracelets in suppor t of an IDF unit. The bells and whistle s

worked students were wowed and excited by what they saw. A number of new clubs made their first appearances at the fair. The Knitting Club, the Movie Club, the Film Club, and the Broadcast

Club took the school by storm. Vaad Tikkun Olam,

Natalie studied abroad in Barcelona last spring to study Spanish art, culture, and language. She says, "It was an incredible experience!" She intends to go to graduate school for occupational therapy and spent this summer observing OT's and working at Ramah Day Camp. Natalie also works at a Hebrew school in Washington D.C. and is a campus representative for Cribspot, a startup company that helps students find housing. Good luck, Natalie! Are you studying abroad? Making headlines? Making aliyah? Serving in the armed forces-or as a barefoot bread baker for social justice? Send fun facts, life updates, and parental kvelling to your returning editor Mrs. Shira Eliaser, seliaser@cjhs.org.

Baruch Dayan Emet The entire community expresses heartfelt sympathy to Dr. Roberta Miller on the tragic loss of her cousin Susan Choucron in Kansas City this past week. May her soul be bound up in the bond of life, and may Roberta and the rest of the family be comforted among all the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

A Taste of Torah: Ki Teitze "If, along the road, you chance upon a bird's nest, in any tree or on the ground, with fledglings or eggs and the mother sitting over the fledglings or on the eggs, do not take the mother together with her young. Let the mother go, and take only the young, in order that you may fare well and have a long life." (Deuteronomy 22:6-7) Rabbinic commentators quickly note that there only two commandments in the Torah that explicitly state that those who practice this commandment will gain long life by doing so - this and the commandment to honor one's parents. What is common about these two commandments? When read midrashically, I think they are reciprocals of each other. Both the commandment to send

away the mother bird and to honor parents find themselves centrally in the lives of high school students. Sending away the parent who is looking after her/his children is a potentially traumatic event. After all, as the contextual (peshat) understanding of this verse suggests, there is real physical danger that could happen to these children in potentially dangerous surroundings. But parents allowing themselves to be sent away - sometimes by their own children - is also central to what it means for parents to honor their children. Allowing for children to fall, to fail, can be the most painful part of parenting. It is also the only way for children to learn to fly. In turn, honoring parents is a life-long commandment that requires children to provide for their parents in manifold ways spiritually, emotionally, physically, and financially. Where parents may find difficulty in leaving children on their own, honoring one's parents at its most difficult requires the exact opposite, being close to one's parents throughout their lives, even at their most frail. Paradoxically, it also means that children must reach out to parents during the precise time of life when they most wants freedom from this structure. High school is a time when students simultaneously seek the autonomy to soar and split the sky on their own and also reach out to their parents for the support that they have depended on throughout their lives. What does this have to do with long life? I would like to suggest that this is a descriptive statement. When parents allow for children to fly on their own and children also circle back to that original nest, the life and values of that family continue on forever. --Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver
