This afternoon, CJHS was tickled pink to welcome Ka. (Ms.) Vickey, Ka. Gigi, Ka. Lydia, Ka. Renee, and the entire Young Threes class of the Hellenic American Monday, June 3 Academy, our gracious next-door neighbors. The twenty Friday, June 7 little munchkins came to bid a fond farewell to their Exams teaching assistant, graduating senior Jessie Lankford. The adored Ms. Jessie has been going next P. O. Corner door to help out at the preschool during her free periods for the past two years, and the kids were glad to come Gelt Program and see her for a change! Thanks to Mr. Scher for sponsoring the kosher pizza. We look forward to many The P.O. is pleased to once again more years of collaboration with the Hellenic American introduce the gift card "Gelt program" to our families and we Academy! have made it much easier (look for upcoming email with details on how to register). Faculty and staff can also buy Gelt that will help to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. The program is a passive earning system, in which you buy the things you ordinarily purchase anyway, and earn money which will be credited to your family for designated school trips. If you have any questions, contact Sheri Sandrof at ssandrof@cjhs.org or call her at 847.324.3723.

Sports Recognition Night
The inspiring 23-year-old Hannah Senesh died by firing squad in 1944, but has endured as one of Israel's most iconic heroes. This first-ever major exhibition tells how this Budapest-born poet, diarist, and author of the hymn Eli, Eli discovered her love for the Land of Israel, courageously volunteered for a mission to rescue downed Allied fliers and Jews from Nazi-occupied Hungary, and ultimately became a lasting symbol of courage and determination. This week's parasha concludes with the Kohanite blessings: may God bless you and keep you; may God look graciously on you and view your every project with excitement; may God look up (as it were) every time you spring into action and reward you with peace. It may come to some readers as a welcome respite from the seemingly unrelated laws and census data which we
must sit through before we reach the "famous bits." However, the laws and numbers which precede this blessing are neither unrelated to each other nor to the great blessing which our people have carried ever since. In order for the community to be blessed with peace, with divine favor and success in all communal enterprises, no one must be excluded. Everyone must count. Literally as well as figuratively-here we have the census of chapters 1 to 4--every one of the Jewish people must count. All labor, however humble, must be worthy of respect and honor: the work of the highest priest is no higher than the porters and shleppers who set up the sanctuary for communal use (chapter 5). Trust is sacred, and so is personal property and personal space (5:9). The community must be worthy of trust: theft must be followed by restitution, not just to the wronged party but to the entire community (5:8). When one party--in this case a jealous husband (5:14)--has destroyed by senseless jealousy the atmosphere of trust, a third party must formally enact a ritual-that of the sotah, the suspected adulteress--to exonerate the innocent wife and prevent the specter of domestic violence from shattering the household (5:28). The nazirite who wishes to withdraw from community in abstinence, holiness, and individual mediation, is truly a holy man or woman, but when s/he finishes the avowed period of abstinence, s/he must then bring a chatat, a sin-offering (6:14), for all the communal help that the nazirite failed to offer while building up a purely personal spirituality. Then, when the community is whole, when each man trusts each woman and every spiritual leader fulfills their full potential, when property is respected and each citizen earns their daily bread with honorable work, when each person counts in the life of the Jewish people, the priests will not need to give the blessing of peace: the blessing will already have been fulfilled! --Mrs. Shira Eliaser
