Community News and Events Job Opportunities at the
Tuesday was a day of celebration at CJHS as students and staff celebrated Yom Ha'Atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. Rabbi Feinsmith got things rolling with a rousing rendition of Hallel featuring beloved Israeli tunes. Later in the afternoon, the entire school was treated to a delicious barbecue - a rare meat meal! With their stomachs and hearts full, students flocked upstairs for special sessions dedicated to learning "Lishma," in the name of learning itself. Faculty members led discussions on such topics as the military ethics of the IDF, the poetry of Yehuda Amichai, Israeli music and television shows, and the legacy of Yitzhak Rabin. For the last few hours of the day, students participated in a wide range of activities which celebrated both the anniversary of the Jewish state and the sudden arrival of real spring weather: an all-school soccer game organized by senior Ari Spellman; a tutorial in Krav Maga, the Israeli martial art, and Zumba. The singing, dancing, learning, playing, and eating that occurred made for a Yom Ha'Atzmaut to remember.

Hebrew Ulpan at the JCC
On the eve of the celebratory day of Yom Ha'Atzmaut, CJHS took time to reflect upon and remember the sacrifices which Israeli soldiers and civilians have made in defense of the Jewish state. In honor of Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day, students led a special program at the conclusion of tefillah on Monday morning. Through the first-person testimonial of Miriam Peretz the first-person testimonial of Miriam Peretz, through poetry, and through song, students and staff at CJHS got a taste of the somber mood that permeates Israel on the day before the Jewish world breaks into uninhibited celebration.

A Taste of Torah On Monday evening, Dr. Rebecca Schorsch served as one of five leaders of the Chicago Jewish community to read and comment on Israel's Declaration of Independence at the Chicago communal Yom HaAtzmaut celebration, held at Anshe Emet Synagogue. This public reading served as an opportunity to canonize this text as a liturgical centerpiece of Jewish life. You can find her reflections on Megilat HaAtzmaut here.
Alumni Trivia Nic Levy ('12) says: "Last year I went on Habonim Dror's Workshop in Israel (Rishon LeZion!) where I lived collectively with 21 others in a house and worked at a school/youth lounge in Holon teaching English and running activities for 10-12 year olds. Currently I am studying materials engineering at McGill university. I am more involved with gender advocacy and sexual assault education groups in Montreal than I am with things in the McGill community. Next year I will be living collectively with three other Jews in a cozy Montreal apartment and our big plans include vegetarian Shabbos potlucks every single week for anyone in the Jewish/friends-of-Jews community. This summer I will be back at Camp Tavor in Michigan implementing a new Israel education initiative (we got a grant!) and working in the kitchen," - a highly respected and much sought-after position in an organic camp with its own farm!
Shabbat Shalom! Candlelighting tonight will be at 7:41 p.m.
