On Thursday, September 11, thirty CJHS students attended the 114th Jewish Federation Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown. With almost 1,300 guests in attendance, the meeting brought together Jewish professionals and lay leaders from all over the Chicagoland area to celebrate JUF's accomplishments over the past year. Before the lunch, students also participated in an interfaith dialogue with Catholic schools from throughout Chicago. Coordinated by the AntiDefamation League, this program was a fitting way to enter the meeting, which featured a speech by Archbishop Francis George. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the 51st Julius Rosenwald Memorial Award to Max "Skip" R. Schrayer, a CJHS parent of senior and freshman Eli and Joey Schrayer and alumna Annie Schrayer ('13). Skip received this award for his lifetime dedication and service to the Jewish community in Chicago and around the world. "We can accomplish things collectively that we cannot do individually." Skip is the third generation of his family to receive the Julius Rosenwald Memorial Award, which is the highest honor the Federation bestows upon lay leaders. Another highlight of the meeting was the recognition of Billy Silverstein, alumni parent of Carly Silverstein ('13), as the incoming Chairman of the Jewish Federation Board. We wish a hearty mazal tov to both Skip and Billy for all of their accomplishments!

On Thursday morning, CJHS commemorated the 13th anniversary of 9/11. Ms. Stephanie Gladstein recalled how she sat in history class as a high school senior when the news came through: nobody really understood what people were saying. Very quickly, students began to file out of class, and soon it seemed that the entire school of 2,000 was congregated around one television. Rabbi Aaron Melman of Congregation Beth Shalom served as our keynote speaker. Rabbi Melman was a chaplain for the Fire Department of New York in 2001. Unable to reach downtown on 9/11, his life-changing ministry began on September 12. Rabbi Melman recalled the feeling, as he was approaching ground zero and realized what he was walking through, that he needed to treat the area as a cemetery. He spoke about the friends he lost, firefighters he interacted with on that day, the comfort given with silence when words failed them all. "We made our way from one group of firefighters to another, just laying a hand on a shoulder now and then," Melman said. "There were no words to make the situation any better, but they knew what we were trying to communicate." Rabbi Melman continues to serve as the chaplain for the Northbrook Fire Department.

Yesterday, the CJHS Engineering Club took its second annual pilgrimage to the IMTS--that is, the International Manufacturing Technology Show downtown. On the train with the indefatigable Mr. Taylor were budding engineers Elan Karoll, Benji Fishbaum, David Weisskopf, Elliana Faletsky, Jack Rubinstein, Josh Kaplinsky, Max Gruenberg, Eytan Herman, Parker Weber, Sara Behn, Yoni Maltsman, Yoni Shapiro, and Ruli Warner-Rosen. Special thanks are also due to special alumni guest Daniel "Pescadito" Fishbaum ('13), an engineering major at Northwestern who was delighted to accompany the team downtown as well. Highlights of the trip included seeing a 3D-printed car, playing blackjack against a robot, wearing Google Glass, getting lots of free swag, and being CJHS swag-a-licious ourselves. Elan Karoll enthusiastically reports, "IMTS was one of the
greatest experiences I've had at CJHS. The amazing field of engineering blows my mind and excites me for the possibilities of the future! I learned so much from the trip, and had so much fun. I love CJHS Engineering Club!" For a donation of $180 (10x chai), bagels, cream cheese, and orange juice will be served to everyone. Announcements will be made in Tefillah and in the dining hall, and the occasion will also be listed in our weekly E-News and on the school announcement board. Representing Israel Last Friday, Jewish National Fund shlicha (emissary), Tal Shaked, addressed the school community about the difficult summer in Israel. She spoke both personally and professionally about what representing Israel has meant to her. What narratives do we emphasize? How do we stay informed? How do we show empathy for the people of Gaza in the midst of a war against the government of Gaza? She empowered our students to take on the role of emissaries of Israel themselves, informed and passionate spokespeople for the Jewish people and Jewish state.

Later in the day, she joined Rabbi Silver's and Rabbi Belgrad's Contemporary Judaism class, reflecting on religious life in Israel. Tal was part of the team that founded Bina, the secular yeshiva in Tel Aviv. She spoke about the bifurcated nature of secular and religious society and simultaneously the religious renaissance that has occurred among the "secular" population in Israel.
National Merit Semifinalists The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, among whom we heartily congratulate CJHS seniors Jonah Glick-Unterman and Isaac Johnston. Well done!
Alumni in the News Congratulations to neurobiology intern and costume superhero Maya Behn ('14), whose petition to provide more Purim/Halloween costume options for women--including features and fashions that promote positive body image--has gained national recognition! The initiative, which was started right here at CJHS in the spring of 2013, asked the Party City chain to diversify the company's lineup by adding options for women and girls that looked professional and not just playful. Maya's petition was featured on Buzzfeed and Jezebel last fall, and having gained 500 signatures, was delivered to CEO Gerald Rittenberg last spring. The results have transformed this fall's Party City Catalog, which advertises, in addition to an expanded heroines and career costumes lineup, also exclusive new mix-and-match editions whereby a shopper can choose what style she is comfortable wearing. Many thanks to all the CJHS students, staff, and alumni who supported the initial initiative, and kol hakavod to Maya for making a difference in the way
women are portrayed in the local media! Tell your friends to start their Purim shopping, CJ!
Alumni Trivia This poli sci maven works as an aide on Congressman Schneider's campaign and was one of the original 35 CJHS signatures on the petition back in 2013. Where is she now?

A Taste of Torah: Ki Tavo "My father was an Aramaean about to perish,
and he went down to Egypt and he sojourned there with a few people, and he became there a great and mighty and multitudinous nation. And the Egyptians did evil to us and abused us and set upon us hard labor. And we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our abuse and our trouble and our oppression. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with great terror and with sign and with portents." (Deuteronomy 26:5-8) This passage from Ki Tavo became the script for what pilgrims would say when giving their gift of first fruits to the Temple, known in Rabbinic idiom as "Mishnah Bikkurim." Rabbi David Silber emphasizes in his Haggadah commentary that the "pilgrim's story entails not only recitation but also performance... actual physical activity." (Go Forth and Learn: A Passover Haggadah, 7) This Biblical text thus models what it means to teach a generation about the past, and how that generation might embody it. The Pilgrim must recite this passage in the first person, understanding the Exodus as his own narrative. Deuteronomy is a book devoted to retelling the narratives of the Torah to a generation that did not see them first-hand. As such, the book serves in many ways as the first book on educational theory - how do we communicate our core ideals to people that were not physically present at an event? In the words of Silber, "The Rabbis who constructed the seder were concerned primarily with the Jew who was not a slave in Egypt... the Jew who, despite the historical divide, is able to say: 'And the Egyptians did evil to us and abused us' (Deut. 26:6); but 'I have come into the land' (26:3). In explicating the Arami oved avi passage we demonstrate that through our seder-night learning we are able to see ourselves in relation to Egypt and allow the Exodus to speak to us in a deeper way." --Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver
