Aleinu L'Shabeach CJHS Teacher Selected for Elite Program in Tefillah Education Ms. Tamara Frankel was part of a select group of Jewish day school leaders chosen to take part in a unique tefillah symposium this summer. This six day intensive seminar, entitled Aleinu L'Shabeach, was run by the Pardes Center for Jewish Educators. Seventeen participants, chosen for their leadership and talent in this field, from Orthodox, Ravsak, and Schechter schools, constituted a think-tank to explore the possibilities and challenges of tefillah education. There were workshops on music, storytelling, film, art, meditation, and the outdoors, developing practical advice to make prayer more accessible to our students. Dr. Susan Wall and Rabbi Zvi Hirschfield, who codirected the program, commented, “The time has come to seriously address tefillah education in day schools. We train Bible, Rabbinics and Hebrew teachers, but we “assume” that these other specialists can successfully lead and teach tefillah with all the difficulties inherent in that. We need to create and develop a field of tefillah education, and we were fortunate to have brought together 17 participants who can, with support, make that happen."

Fall Sports Gearing Up Tigers On the Court If you've noticed the several dozen teenagers thundering past Lake Cook Road, you'll know that the CJHS fall sports teams are ready to rumble. Our tireless cross country runners are on the go, under the leadership of Coach Bob Cogan, and in the field you'll see coaches Greg Shannon (men's soccer), Marty Dello (men's golf), Chris Hambach (women's volleyball), and Barb Finfer (women's tennis) training hard with their energetic teams. The first game of the volleyball season is this Monday against Waldorf, so come on out and support your team!

New--Family Photo Contest! Break out those smartphones and earn some prize money for your team! We are collecting sports photos from games and meets. Parents, fans, students, and coaches from every fall sport can submit their favorite game day photos to Tara Seymour at tseymour@cjhs.org. From the JUF The Jewish Day School Guarantee Trust Fund We want to say a special thank you to JUF for its longstanding and continuous support of the Day Schools. Each year, our local Jewish Day Schools receive over $3 million from JUF’s core allocation, plus an additional distribution, based on enrollment, from the Jewish Day School Guaranty Trust Fund. Over the past decade, JUF has distributed nearly $14 million to the schools from this fund, thanks to the over 185 donors. And those distributions will continue every year, in perpetuity.

For the upcoming fiscal year, CJHS will receive $68,502 from the Jewish Day School Guaranty Trust Fund. In total, it has received $498,743. For more information or to contribute to this fund, which directly impacts our school and your child, please contact Deborah Silverman at 312.357.4853 or legacy@juf.org.

A Taste of Torah: Rosh Chodesh Elul Rabbi Zach Silver, Rav Beit Sefer, writes, "There is great holiness in the beginning of school. New beginnings, new opportunities. This Shabbat and Sunday we celebrated Rosh Chodesh Elul, the month where we prepare for Rosh HaShanah. Each day, we listen to the call of the shofar, beckoning us to take heed of who we are as individuals. The root of teshuva is shuv, meaning return. To what are we returning?" READ MORE >>
