An early morning walk through the halls of CJHS will yield the sounds of selichot from the Beit Knesset; the P.O. appears bearing apples and honey, as Rabbi Greenberg's freshmen open up their mishnayot to Masechet Rosh Hashanah and Rabbi Kensky's seniors dive into their copies of Megillat Kohelet. The fall harvest is coming in from Mr. Taylor's garden, and it's Rosh Hashanah at CJHS!

The smell of baking bread wafted tantalizingly through the corridors on Thursday afternoon when 55 students got baking at this year's first Holla for Challah! Under the leadership of club presidents Lisa Klein and Lucy Cohen, students scooped up their round and braided and beautifully sweetened treats to take home for the holiday-assuming those tasty loaves last that long!

Our cross country teams finished third at Lake Forest last Tuesday in the first meet of the season-just 3 points shy of winning the meet! The freshmen made an incredible showing in their first CJHS race of the year, working as a team, running as a pack, and making incredible time. Well done, Tigers!

Victory On the Court
The women's volleyball team brought off spectacular wins on Wednesday night, with both JV and varsity teams emerging triumphant against Ellison! In Thursday's games against Christ the King, star players Samantha Wolf had six aces, Elliana Brody had seven kills, Erin Miller had sixteen assists and five aces, and Hannah Taussig had five aces. Way to go, Lady Tigers!
On the Field
The men's soccer team had a full week against Cristo Rey and Northtown. Coach Greg Shannon reports, "Despite the lopsided scores, goalies Gabe Chasin and Henry Hoffman have made some incredible saves! The defense has been lights out, led by Jason and Jonathan Taitz: Ben Saxton has been supporting the offense at every opportunity; Danny Gabel is playing well and had some great looks, and Josh Levitas continues to stand out on both offense and defense. Rookie of the Week is David Levin, who upped the score in Thursday's match, picking up a
rebound and making it count with a solid strike into the back of the net!" Go Tigers!
Friday 9/11 CJHS Remembers This morning, we commemorated 9/11 as a community. Tefillah was held in a somber tone to begin the morning. Mr. Kassner shared a historical perspective how best to remember significant events in American history. Mr. Griffith shared an original poem on memory and loss, while Dr. Schorsch drew together the themes of 9/11 and those of Rosh Hashanah. Many thanks to all who participated in the service.

A Taste of Torah: Tisha b'Av and Teshuva Alan Lew, in his book This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared, takes a spiritual journey from 17 of Tammuz through Shemini Atzeret. Tisha B'Av and the story told in Megillat Eichah can be seen as a text for reflecting on teshuva. Rabbinic discourse on the Temple's destruction tends to avoid the obvious external factors, e.g. war, political maneuvering, military stratagems, and the Romans who actually torched the place. Rather, our Sages ask what in the behavior of the Jewish people was "truly" the root cause of the catastrophe. The rabbinic viewpoint that we learn is less of a history lesson than a model of how to respond to conflicts, frustrations, and disappointments in our own lives. We cannot change external events, but we can change
ourselves as we react to them. Teshuva is the process by which we ask ourselves: what is my responsibility in this situation? In what ways am I complicit with the forces that caused it? What can I do to resolve this problem? And how can I prevent others now and in the future from being in the same situation? Rabbi Judy Greenberg and the Senior Bible Class
