The flight is touching down and our jetlagged seniors are staggering home, full of memories and food for thought. They began this week in Tel Aviv, beating the pavements for our annual scavenger hunt. Teams interviewed passersby, hunted artifacts, and sought out ways they could be helpful to the people around them. S unday night brought them to Na Lagaat, the theater for the blind and deaf in Jaffa, for a performance which Rayna Gorstein described as "absolutely mesmerizing." Miki Gavrealov rocked out in concert on Monday night for a different side of Israeli culture--especially for those students who weren't already fans!

A Taste of Torah: Bo
"The LORD said to Moshe, "Stretch out your hand against the sky, and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness that can be felt. Moshe stretched forth his hand against the sky and grim darkness fell across the land of Egypt; no one recognized his brother or got up from where he was sitting for three days, while the Israelites all had light in their homes." --Shmot 10:21-23 Driven to disaster by a selfish and insensitive leader, battered by one natural disaster after another, their economy devastated and their public health a menace, the Egyptians succumb to crippling hopelessness and impenetrable gloom. The penultimate plague is depression: a darkness which can be felt. In the fast-paced, isolating culture of the 21st century, we know too well how depression can root us to our seats and prevent us from seeing the common humanity of others in our sufferings. The Egyptians could see with their eyes, but the darkness within made them as paralyzed as if they had been blind. The light in our dwellings was indeed miraculous, but the miracle was the miracle of hope.
