Our very own Dr. Rebecca Schorsch has been named one of this year's three recipients of the prestigious Covenant Award for excellence in Jewish Education, joining 69 other Jewish educators who have been honored with the award since it was established by the Covenant Foundation in 1991. "Every day I feel blessed to do what I love, something at once meaningful and critical to building the world that we wish to inhabit," Dr. Schorsch said. "I am grateful to Covenant for honoring my work and, more importantly, for valuing the significance of Jewish education. "This award depends upon the deep support of family and friends, students, colleagues and community, who nourish me, encourage me, challenge me, and work devotedly to teach and embody Torah. I am excited to join a national cohort of committed and excellent Jewish educators who will further stimulate my thinking and support my work in the field." A member of the CJHS faculty since 2003, Dr. Schorsch was appointed Director of Jewish Studies three years ago and oversaw the merger of the school's Bible, Talmud and Jewish Thought departments into a unified and integrated department of Jewish studies under her leadership. But Dr. Schorsch remains, first and foremost, a teacher at heart. "The relationships Rebecca forges, and her own personal example, are at the core of her approach and her success," wrote Tony Frank, CJHS Head of School, in her nomination letter. "Her warmth, caring and respect for others are the currency she uses to engage students and colleagues alike... Rebecca's influence is so often experienced not merely as profound, but as transformative." The Covenant Foundation, a program of the Crown Family Philanthropies, and the Jewish community will honor Dr. Schorsch and her two fellow recipients -- Alison Kur, Executive Director of Jewish Living at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA, and Rabbi Yisroel Boruch Sufrin, Head of School at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy in Beverly Hills, CA - at an awards dinner in Washington, DC on Nov. 9, during the General Assembly of The Jewish Federations of North America. A triumphant inaugural baseball season! The baseball team won again this week, defeating Northtown Academy 146 for the second time this season. Coby Drexler picked up his second "W" of the year on Senior Night. Yadid Licht led the offensive attack with 2 hits and 3 RBI. Benny Gabel and Aaron Drexler also added senior leadership to the inaugural CJHS baseball team! The team finished with a .500 winning percentage on the year at 3-3 with far too many rain-outs (although including a forfeit they won, earlier in the year, the Tigers finished with a winning record in their very first season!). A roller coaster week for men's volleyball! Needing a win in a playin game to make it into their conference tournament this week, the Tigers scraped out a dramatic victory, playing part of the match with only five players after an injury to Justin Lanoff. After losing their first-round matchup, the team blew out the opposition in the second round, earning a third place trophy. Up next are regionals on Monday against Highland Park. Go Tigers!

Lilach Schrag's Cloak Series On Display

This week, artist and CJHS parent Lilach Schrag installed a powerful display of work from her Cloak Series in the Beit K'nesset and the library. "The cloak represents a link between heaven and man, and between man and himself," Lilach said, explaining her interest in exploring the Biblical story of Elijah's ascent to heaven in her current work. "This piece of clothing is extended to become a tool in the hands of a miracle worker, and a symbol of authority and opportunity. "The Cloak Series describes my existence in a place where cloaks are ever present," she continues. "I feel compelled to keep my eyes open and be available, in order to then take action." The series includes large spray-painted canvases, photographs, and sculptures made of steel, wood, fabric, and paper. Some canvases are displayed in the Beit K'nesset where they enhance the meditative tone of the area. Additional pieces are installed in the library, where the sunlight plays an important role conveying a sense of ascent and an angel-like presence. The works will be on display through the summer, and visitors are encouraged to stop by the Beit K'nesset and library to see them.

Lilach Schrag teaches art, lectures about Jewish art, and organizes artists' retreats. Her son Jonathan is a CJHS junior, and older sons Ron and Adam graduated in 2009 and 2012. She can be reached via her website, www.lilachschrag.com.

A Taste of Torah We concluded our communal time together this year by hearing from student Joshua Silverman, outgoing president of Va'ad HaStudentim, who addressed the school during Tefillot. Please find his words of Torah about Parashat B'Midbar here.

Alumni Trivia Eliana Fisher ('12) says: "I just declared my major at Barnard and am doing a combined major in Political Science and Human Rights. I am currently the head gabbai at Koach at Columbia/Barnard Hillel. Last year, I choreographed a dance for the first time!" Yishar Kocheych on all your accomplishments, Eliana!
