MUN Movie Night On Sunday evening, the Model UN team hosted a program on the Kurdish community in the Middle East. Over 120 students, parents, faculty, friends, and family came to the screening of Turtles Can Fly, whereafter five members of the Kurdish Cultural Center related some of their own histories, including their difficulties with immigration to the U.S and to Chicago specifically, a city with only 200 Kurds. Dr. Osmen Cen and his colleagues focused the discussion on current events in Northern Iraq, Turkey, and Syria, where the Kurds are threatened by ISIS, and spoke about relations with the United States, the Jewish community, and Israel.
P.O. Corner The P.O. is pleased to offer the gift card or "Scrip/Gelt" program, designed to help families earn money to apply towards their students' Shabbatonim, Junior Class trip, and Senior Israel Experience. By purchasing gift cards through the school for vendors where you ordinarily shop (groceries, gas, household items, etc), a percentage of what you spend each time will be placed in your family's account to be used for these trips. Gift card orders are placed every Thursday. Please contact Sheri Sandrof at ssandrof@cjhs.org or 847.324.3723 with any questions.
Our Kurdish guests spoke of many commonalities they feel they share with the Jewish community and Israel, and they expressed a sincere wish to nurture that relationship. Response to the program from CJHS attendees was overwhelmingly positive; many audience members expressed great interest in inviting the speakers to present at their own home synagogues, invitations which were received with a resounding affirmative. Let's keep communication between our two communities flourishing!

Steven Chaitman writes for the JUF News, "More than 1,100 supporters of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago attended an intimate evening with former Prime Minister and President of the State of Israel Shimon Peres on Oct. 28." Former president Peres fielded a question from CJHS senior Sari Mishell, who inquired what message he has for her generation in Chicago. Mr. Peres told the teens to be proactive and always remain true to yourselves. He described young people today as extremely wellinformed, forward-looking and "the most honest generation we've ever had. People say, Study history or you will repeat the same mistake, but you make mistakes anyway. And when you look back, the past is an ongoing mistake. Who wants to go back to the hunger, the shortcomings, the ignorance? The young generation wants to

Fall Sports Wrap Up Women's volleyball is closing out its tournament season! Coach Hambach writes, "It was a great ride! We had a lot of great moments. Our JV teams got their first wins ever, and our varsity team finished third in conference and made it back to the Final Four of the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year. We also had two all conference selections as Carly Silvers was selected first team all conference and Lena Rabinowitz was selected second team all conference. We fought until the very end, and for that I am very proud. Go Tigers!" Our conference champion cross country team celebrated another victorious season with the annual Cross Country Black-Tie Ball. Paper plate awards were the hit of the evening, and graduating seniors exhorted their cheering teammates with farewell speeches. Departing senior Rayna Gorstein reports, "It was a fantastic night filled with senior speeches and paper plate awards, ice cream and pizza, singing and dancing throughout the night!" Many thanks to the Vales family for hosting the dance last Saturday night.

Va'ad Israel This past week has been incredible for Va'ad Israel! Senior Jonathan Schrag brought our group up to date on the situation in the U.N. Jonathan spoke on the history and views of the United Nations towards Israel. He is the first of multiple students who will be giving presentations throughout the year.
On Wednesday, the club was joined by Dr. Thaier Kizel, the current recipient of the Israel Outstanding Teacher of the year award. Co-Presidents Larry Bender and Sarah Levin welcomed Dr. Kizel to CJHS, and he enlightened us about the the Druze community in Israel to which he belongs. There are around 100,000 Druze in Israel today. Dr. Kizel explained to newcomers about the Druze religion--a unitarian breakaway sect that separated from Islam circa 1000 CE under the transient leadership of ad-Darazi. Larry Bender sums up, "Their community numbers over 100,000 in Israel alone. The most sacred space for the Druze is the Jethro shrine in Hittin. The Druze in Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan are not looking for their own states, but are loyal to the country that they are living in. And let's not forget to mention the incredible food!" Stay tuned for more Va'ad Israel events!

A Taste of Torah: Lech Lecha Preview tonight's Shabbaton with a moment of comedy from junior Jack Rubinstein and his parsha rap, the Fresh Prince of Canaan: Now this is the story all about how God came and took me out of town, I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there to tell you how I became the first Jew in Canaan. From east of Jerusalem born and raised, in the idol shop where I spent most of my days, hanging with my family and running the shop, while doing work for mom and pop. When I was alone and up to some good, I starting smashing idols in the neighborhood, I blamed it on the idols and dad got mad, he said, "How could idols do anything bad?" Then I heard the voice of God, and this is what he said, "Go to Canaan--get that into your dad's head". He echoed the ideas already in brain! I begged and pleaded but dad wouldn't listen, day after day till he finally caved in and we were on our way. We hit Charan and travel-- dad was sick of it. He said, "we might as well kick it". But I wanted more, God's promises of greatness and children galore. So I left with Lรถt and Sarai, 'cause Charan was where my father was going to die. After some wandering we made it right before dawn and that's how I became the first Jew in Canaan.
