Gorstein, and Talia Canter! Rumbula's Echo
Holocaust Film Work-in-Progress Screening with CJHS Connection Rumbula's Echo is a new documentary that shows how a huge mass shooting of the Holocaust changed a family, a country and our world today. The internationally filmed documentary includes several stories with a local connection. Among those featured are Glenview survivor Sia Hertsberg, U of C professor emeritus Edward Anders and Chicago's Lieber family. The film opens with the genealogy search for a CJHS student's namesake, which also plays into the ending of the movie. The documentary's central event is the mass shooting of 25,000 Jews in two days in the Rumbula forest in Latvia. The film, which is still being finished, has been test screening "rough cut" material to international acclaim. A Chicago work-in-progress screening is being presented Sunday March 23, 11 am to 1 pm, at the Claudia Cassidy Theater, 77 W. Randolph. Afterwards, survivor Sia Hertsberg and filmmaker Mitchell Lieber will answer questions, moderated by Loyola Holocaust professor Dr Elliot Lefkovitz. Advance tickets only. This event is presented with the assistance of the Illinois Humanities Council. Click here for more details.

Basketball Shabbaton 2014
2013-2014 Dates

Shabbat happens wherever there are Jews to celebrate it. This past weekend, that location was Ottawa, Illinois. In order to allow our basketball team enough time to get to the Sectional Final in Serena, our basketball team, many basketball families and CJHS students and fans joined together for a festive Shabbat. This Shabbat featured the opportunities and privileges that we have as Jews to craft a dynamic

Jewish life filled with all of the opportunities in both the Jewish community and the wider modern world. Shabbat dinner (Garden Fresh on strategically wired hotplates) was not only delicious, but also featured Shabbat singing, typical of every CJHS Shabbaton. Ranging from old favorites to new verses for "Mipi El" made up on the spot by students and teachers, songs carried on throughout the weekend. Saturday morning, we continued in prayer and a full Torah reading. Pioneer parent David Silverman, father of senior Joshua Silverman, Reby Silverman ('10), Matthew Silverman ('07), and Jessie Silverman ('05), gave a beautiful dvar Torah that everyone in attendance will remember for a long time. Weaving together the contextual understandings of the sacrifices in Vayikra with midrashim and 20th century poetry, Mr. Silverman also reflected on the temporal nature of sacrifice, the passing of time in hidden ways, and his last moments on the court as a CJHS basketball dad. After the traditional huggy circle of CJHS Havdalah, a caravan of cars followed in procession behind the team bus to the Serena Gym--a little like Friday Night Lights! Our mission as a school is to live a vital Judaism, which simultaneously engages the opportunities of the modern world and celebrates our particular legacy as Jews. This weekend, we lived this to the fullest.
Contemporary Judaism On Friday March 7, the junior level Contemporary Judaism class taught by Rabbi Silver and Rabbi Belgrad welcomed Rabbi David Wolkenfeld of Anshe Sholom B'nei Israel Congregation to speak on Orthodox Judaism. The class is exploring different contemporary Jewish denominations by inviting a guest speaker from each denomination to share his/her beliefs and outlook. Rabbi Wolkenfeld spoke about the role of halakha in the life of the Orthodox community; the reciprocal nature of authority, between rabbi and congregation; a trend in the Modern Orthodox community towards more engagement with social issues that cannot narrowly be defined as "Jewish," e.g., immigration; and issues surrounding both women's participation and the place of homosexuals within the Orthodox world. He then answered questions from the students and engaged them in thoughtful dialogue.
ISACS Report On Wednesday, the co-chairs of our ISACS accreditation team, Dr. Ray Levi and Rabbi Eric Grossman, delivered their long-awaited exit report to the faculty, which opened with these words: "A senior who will be studying engineering and business in college tells us that one of his most meaningful projects involved comparing the writings of Albert Camus to Rabbi Soloveitchik. We see him next period performing a keyboard riff in the jazz band." "A transfer student shares that she has never encountered such an 'independent, welcoming, loving group of people.' Another student says that 'I'm really connected to teachers who I can talk to about everything. There aren't two separate teacher and student worlds. The teachers come to events and are even in on the jokes.' And yet another voice offers, 'If you advocate and are

passionate, administrators will support and encourage you.'" "These words are not isolated examples. Rather they capture what the ISACS Visiting Team experienced throughout our time at CJHS, a remarkably engaged and engaging student body, articulate, welcoming, and reflective. From the joyful singing during tefillah to the quiet assistance provided for a friend finishing math work during lunch, each of us was overwhelmed by reflective, and loving young men and women who are attuned to their own developmental arcs as learners and members of the social community, who live the mission of this school." The ISACS team specifically commends Chicagoland Jewish High School for: 1. Bringing its mission to life by fostering critical thinking, relationship building, and engaging with the complexity of what it means to be a Jew in the modern world. 2. Fostering a familial climate in which students feel safe and supported and are celebrated for the broad range of interests that they bring to the community. 3. Cultivating confident student leaders who are articulate self-advocates and program initiators. 4. Deeply caring faculty members who build strong and enduring relationships with students and who serve as role models by living the values of the school. 5. Building a collaborative leadership team that is anchored by the school's mission and by thoughtful approaches to addressing the daily challenges of school life. 6. An engaged Board that is passionate about the school's mission and deeply committed to securing its future. 7. An Admissions Team that works to counter demographic and national trends through creative efforts in reaching out to nontraditional communities. 8. A remarkably robust development effort that yields impressive funding from generous donors for the annual budget and also builds endowment funds that can stabilize the school's financial position over time. 9. Offering a broad range of extra-curricular activities that form the core of student engagement with the school community and beyond. 10. Building a curricular program that prepares students well for their post-secondary educational experiences in selective colleges and gap year programs in Israel. Once reviewed by the ISACS Evaluation Review Committee and adopted by the ISACS Board of Trustees, the full written report of the ISACS team, with both commendations and recommendations, will be presented to CJHS for review and implementation. The CJHS administration again offers its thanks to our students, faculty, staff and Board and to the many other participants in this important process of improvement and growth.

STAND UPdate Senior Shira Harris reports, "In the Central African Republic's capital, fewer than 1,000 Muslims remain after the current conflict which has caused over 99,000 Muslims to flee from the capital city. The head of a global alliance of churches recommends tackling the conflict as a political, rather than religious conflict, with the intention to bring the Muslims back to their homes. This conflict began as mainly Muslim rebels toppled the Christian government, causing the Christians to create an equally brutal militia. After ethnic cleansing of Muslims and a mass exodus from Bangui, CAR's capital city, as well as other cities in CAR, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator says that less than 1% of the city's Muslims remain in the capital. Muslims continue to flee from these cities, while others are sheltered in churches, as the conflict continues. We pray for a peaceful resolution to the conflict to be reached soon."
A Taste of Torah This week, I had the opportunity to experience and be a part of joy in its purest form. My friends Rabbi David and Rebecca Russo gave birth to their first child, Natan Adir. Holding their child was a remarkable miracle that also happened in the mundaneness of a living room, on the very same couch I had fallen asleep on for so many Shabbatot. Rabbi David Hartman considers: On Purim we make contact with the child's unselfconscious joy of life. And in making contact with this child-like joy of life...we discover a sensitivity to the needs of others born of the celebration of life. On Purim, the poor experience the responsiveness of a world not dominated exclusively by the exploits of Haman. On Purim, the poor may renew their Messianic hope as a result of their experiencing the outstretched hand of human compassion liberated by the joy of life....Purim signifies the dream that one day we will live in a world in which the passion for life will make us responsive to all human beings and that in place of their cynical demonic yearnings for power, men will accept each other's differences and affirm their common love of life per se with joy. Purim does not ask us to be children. But it necessitates that we look to the world with heightened sensitivity to every human we interact with, as children so often do. It necessitates that we care for all life in the same way that we do when a child can be held in one arm. During a holiday where we read the one book of the Bible that does not mention God, we honor God's presence in every human by interacting with every human we encounter on the day. On this day, anyone who puts out a hand asking for change, we must give to him/her. On this day, we must give gifts to friends. On this day we must have a festive meal. There is great wonder in our every day interactions. This week, holding new life made me that much more conscious of this. Ritually on Purim, we will be asked to do the same. --Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver
