student clubs set up tables to introduce themselves to new members. During an extended lunch period, students new and returning walked up and down the hallway, where group after group handed out chocolate, asked about their interests and goals, and described the benefits of joining various clubs. Rochelle Zell Jewish High School is now part of the worldwide Girl Up empowerment movement, and returning favorites like the Engineering Club, Gender and Feminism Club, DECA, Environmental Club, Knitting Club, and Holla for Challah attracted many new faces. Also rallying student support along with Va'ad Israel, the Va'ad Tefillah and social service powerhouse DEAP, is the team which will put together an amazing Rochelle Zell school musical in the spring! From the look of it, it's going to be a great year for extracurriculars at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School!

Fall Sports Look for Sunshine Soccer, Tennis and Golf News

On Monday, the men's soccer team took on an always tough Holy Trinity team. Coach Shannon reports, "Last year they completely dominated us, but this year was a whole different story! We took them by surprise and at multiple times dominated the game. We battled right to the end and had multiple opportunities to pull out the win, but came up on the short end of a 4-3 game. We did have three very nice goals by Eli Ecanow, Eli Gurin, and Sammy Korol, with assists by Eli Gurin, Isaac Levitan, Noah Magill, and Jonah Magill. The highlight of Tuesday's match versus Cristo Rey was Eli Gurin scoring another goal, his fifth of the season! The women's tennis team had their first varsity match in history! We may have fallen a little short in the victory, but we had a few standouts. Betsy Winick, playing in her first match ever, had over a two hour battle. She lost in a third set tie breaker, but she fought till the bitter end. Bella LaVarre and Emma Mati, our number one doubles team, also had very tough opponents. Maine East's coach told Coach Finfer that he had never met nicer, more courteous girls. We will get them next time! After a rainy start, the men's golf team opened their season with a tough match against Lake Forest Academy. David Weisskopf and Ethan Laney put together some very nice rounds; David shot a 49 and Ethan a 50 for the match. The team has been working hard, and looking forward to their next match September 7 against Niles North. Thanks to Doug Laney for the photos! Fall Sports Photos Take a leaf from Mr. Laney's playbook and send in your photos! Photographers, SnapChatters, assistant coaches, and proud parents: E-News wants you to share the love! Snap photos of your favorite game, match, or tee-off and send to Mrs. Shira Eliaser, your faithful editor, at seliaser@rzjhs.org. We're counting on you to make this season a great one!

A Taste of Torah: Re'eh

The Torah makes a striking claim in this week’s Parasha: There shall be no needy among you (Deuteronomy 15:4). God promises that God will protect the Israelite people so long that they live up to their side of the covenant. As part of this, Deuteronomy establishes a striking economic system, where during every seventh year, all debts are cancelled. Yet within ten verses of establishing the law, the text notes how difficult this commandment will be to follow, particularly as the Sabbatical year approaches. As the verse states: “Beware, lest you have a sinful thought in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year approaches, the Sabbatical year,’ and you will look malevolently upon your needy brother and refuse to give him — then he may appeal against you to God, and it will be a sin” (15:9). The Torah notes the natural human instinct to protect one’s own economic interests — and states that the primary characteristic of this system will be to trust God. As juniors learn in their study about Hillel’s Prosbul, it must be noted that the Rabbis of the Talmud are not able to maintain this idyllic Biblical economic vision. Indeed, on the ground, it is clear that people refrained from giving loans as the Sabbatical year approached, which threatened the entirety of the economic system. Yet simultaneously, the Rabbis maintain a Rabbinic remembrance of shmitah which exists until this day. The vision set forth in Deuteronomy was not an economic system that worked practically in post-agrarian society. Yet its aspirations to cultivate in tangible ways that we are mindful of every member of our society leaves us reason to pause about how we can best fulfill the imperative of the religious ethic of non-indifference.
