competition, while Claire Gruenberg and Sarah Tenner tested a beautifully decorated double layer Warren with verticals. Honors for this year were carried off by Lucy Cohen and Lisa Klein, whose double-layered original arch supported 36 times its own weight before snapping at the loading platform. Lucy and Lisa will join last year's senior champions in downtown Chicago at IIT's regional bridgebuilding competition this winter!

Building Blocks of the High Holidays Ninth Grade Talmud Investigates What says "Rosh Hashannah" to you? Some of Ms. Frankel's freshmen were surprised to learn that absolutely none of the most fundamental pieces of their holidays could be found in the texts of the Written Torah or Oral Torah that are the building blocks of our tradition; in Leviticus 23, there is no mention of apples and honey, synagogue services, or teshuva. Students were asked to use their own knowledge to identify what they think are the building blocks of the chag and are now considering the history, sequence, and value of later rabbinic texts in the development of traditions and the halachic process.
This Week in Sports Women's Volleyball and Men's Soccer Women’s volleyball is having a busy season, taking on Holy Trinity, St. Martin, Cristo Rey, and Woodlands. Leading the
varsity squad in aces and kills have been Erin Miller and Lucy Cohen, Sam Wolf, Dafna Stofenmacher, and Hannah Cohen. Meanwhile, newcomers Ari Handleman, Maya Vankin, and Rikki Drexler have joined Ma’ayan Noy at the forefront of the JV squad. Come see them play Providence St. Mel on Monday! Men’s soccer has been looking at our toughest week of the season, going up against an always tough Northridge Prep, St. Benedict & Cristo Rey! Coach Shannon reports Josh Levitas, Micah Brody, and Jonah Magill as the MVP's of Tuesday's game. Wednesday we played another conference game and a much improved St. Benedict team. “We were on fire,” Coach Shannon recalls, “going up 1-0 on a great finish by Eli Ecanow, his second of the season! Despite some stellar soccer and great play by Jonah Hammel, Matt Weiss, and Henry Hoffman we were tied 1-1 at half. In the second half we were absolutely dominating play, courtesy of Micah Brody and Sammy Korol. After an onslaught of shots, Isaac Levitan came up with our second goal! David Levin got his first assist of the season. This was by far our best and most complete match: coming back from 1 point down really shows the character this team has!” Fall Sports Photos Take a leaf from Mr. Martinez's playbook and send in your photos! Photographers, SnapChatters, assistant coaches, and proud parents: E-News wants you to share the love! Adventures in AP Hijinks in AP Physics and Statistics That's not an unused classroom you're walking into--it's an AP investigation! Mr. Baumstark's AP Stats class was found staggered around the room in a human dot plot, measuring individual data points within a height distribution. Down the hall, unwary entrants needed to duck and cover as the gung-ho projectile scientists in Mrs. Eliaser's AP Physics class fired yet another steel marble in a graceful parabola through the series of colored hoops they had hung. Cheers and laughter abounded as drafts from the air vents threw off carefully projected vectors, last minute stabilizers were invented, and the Physics Circus marble sailed beautifully through its first three hoops before glancing off a rim and landing Harry-Potter style down Yoni Maltsman's right sleeve. Watch your heads, everyone--here there be science!
New Library Collection Eretz Magazine Thanks to an anonymous donor, our school library is the recipient of a magnificent collection of books and magazines about Israel, focusing on the heritage, culture, geography and history of the Land of Israel. The publications are produced six times a year and will continue to be made available through the library as they are received.
In the words of our donor: “I was introduced to this publication by a friend on one of my trips to Israel, and I knew right away that I must have this publication. Each volume captures the yearning to learn more about the history of the Land of Israel. It is truly a land of miracles. The publisher and Editor in Chief, Yadin Roman, continues to receive much acclaim for his work over the years in depicting the continuing saga of the Land of Israel. Alumni Trivia Gotcha! If you're on the pay of a professional sports team now, it isn't because you got game, it's because you got skills! Rubbing shoulders with major athletes today are some of the greatest managers of the IHSA champion Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball teams:
Aaron Freeman (CJHS '12) is now the Minnesota Timberwolves' newest PR man, having interned in communications with the Chicago Sky and served as a sports correspondent for the Chicago Blackhawks. Aaron finished his communications degree at Bradley University last spring, after having served for years as a sports commentator, analyst, stats manager, archivist, and AV producer for the Bradley Braves and began his Minneapolis career with the Minnesota Lynx. Way to go, Aaron! Matt Levin (CJHS '10), was an IT business analyst for two years with the Boston Red Sox, and now works as the manager of accounting and data analysis for the Red Sox in Pawtucket. Matt graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston University's School of Business where he studied accounting and information management systems.
A Taste of Torah: Elul and Teshuva
Teshuva is usually translated as "repentance." If you look at the Hebrew root, you’ll see that teshuva comes from the root שובwhich means “return”. So in this sense, teshuva is a process of returning. What is less clear, then, is to where, to what or to whom are we returning? Going back to the metaphor of “coming home,” we know from our own experiences and those of others that sometimes coming home - to God, to others and to ourselves - is challenging because we haven’t been there in a while or because we may have been avoiding this return for some other reason. And sometimes our experiences of returning home are filled with love and warmth. When we are home, we are embraced. Home can be the one place where we can be fully seen and heard.
