A Taste of Torah: U'Netaneh Tokef The U’netaneh Tokef prayer is the most haunting in the Jewish liturgy. During Musaf of both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur we recite the following words: We will recount the power and might of the day, for it is awesome and threatening… On Rosh Hashanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed. How many will pass and how many will be created? Who will live and who will die? Who in their time, and who not their time? Who by fire and who by water? The words speak to the lack of control that we as humans have in this world. And it’s terrifying. This year, specific words jumped off the page more than others. “Who by fire, Who by water?” On Monday afternoon, I opened up the newspaper and saw two striking images — the wildfires that are burning throughout California and a group of Syrians who were swimming toward a Greek Island because their makeshift boat had fallen apart. Two weeks ago, three-year-old Aylan Kurdi’s body washed onto the Turkish coastline and the picture became a symbol for the four-million people who are fleeing from wartorn Syria, a country where citizens are caught between Basshar al-Assad and ISIS. This marks the greatest refugee crisis in the world since the end of World War II. As I recently saw posted on Facebook, “You have to understand that nobody places their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land.” I urge us all to respond by the three-fold process of reflection and action that serve as the apex of the poem, Teshuva, Tefillah, Tzedakah: Recognize the humanity that is seeking refuge from uninhabitable

trauma; scream toward voices of power to find a location that can give these people opportunities to live; give of our own resources to the vulnerable across the ocean. READ MORE>>
