A heartfelt Mazal Tov goes to Dr. Rebecca Schorsch, who this past Sunday received the Covenant Award for Jewish Education in Washington, D.C. in front of hundreds of people, including members of our own faculty, our board and the CJHS community. The evening brought together supporters of Jewish education from across North America to highlight the accomplishments of Dr. Schorsch, and her fellow award winners Alison Kur and Rabbi Yisroel Baruch Sufrin.

P.O. Corner The P.O. is pleased to offer the gift card or "Scrip/Gelt" program, designed to help families earn money to apply towards their students' Shabbatonim, Junior Class trip, and Senior Israel Experience. Dr. Schorsch remarks, "In celebrating Jewish education tonight, on the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of devastating broken glass, we remind ourselves again of past brokenness and the contribution of Jewish education in making us whole. The shards become the mirror tonight, which the Covenant Foundation holds up to Jewish education in the hope that others see themselves in the reflection, sparking imagination and possibilities." She adds, "From my great grandfather forward, I have been raised by three generations who love the world and our children enough to be educators. Tonight, 76 years later, I stand here especially grateful for my inheritance, a family legacy and a longstanding tradition of defiant hope; I am grateful to be recognized for doing what I love and for the support

necessary to hold up the mirrors so that in the looking glass, worlds can be imagined, repaired, and embraced." Read more about the Covenant Award here and the full text of Dr. Schorsch's speech here. Back at CJHS, over 100 guests were treated to a lively panel discussion last night, in honor of Dr. Schorsch and moderated by her, about the future of Jewish education. Head of school Tony Frank proclaimed, "We wanted to find a fitting way to celebrate Rebecca's achievement upon her return this week in a way that honors not only Rebecca, but Jewish educators and Jewish education more broadly, which is what the Covenan t Award is really all about. And so [we invited] the distinguished members of this panel from our own community for a 'Siach Mechanchim,' a conversation of educators." Included in the discussion were Jacob Cytryn, Director of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, Tamar Cytryn, Director of Jewish Studies and Campus Life at Chicago Jewish Day School, Tzivia Garfinkel, Head of Jewish Studies at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, Rabbi Ben Kramer, Director of Jewish Life and Learning at Sager Solomon Schechter Day School, Lisa Alter Krule, Director of Regional Engagement of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (and CJHS parent!), and our own Rabbi Zachary Silver Rav Beit

CJHS thanks Lt. Becky Moschel (ret) for coming to address the student body on Tuesday in honor of Veterans' Day. Lt. Moschel grew up in Deerfield and attended West Point, where she braved the daunting attrition rate to become the only Jewish female cadet in her class. Lt. Moschel points out that less than 1% of Americans serve in the military, and less than 1% of that group is Jewish. Lt. Moschel described her experiences as a Jewish woman and an officer in the American military, her grim duty as a mortuary officer in Afghanistan, as well as her more enjoyable experiences in the West Point Jewish cadet's choir, which was less about musical ability than about social support in the face of a fearsomely disciplined military regimen. Thank you, Lt. Moschel, and thank you to all who serve and keep our country safe!

Cooper Invitational

CJHS brought home the Tier II second-place trophy this week from the Cooper Invitational Tournament in Memphis. In a nail-biter of a game on Friday, our boys screeched past the Atlanta Jaguars 52-51, led by high scorers Josh Newlander, Eli Nasatir-whose name the commentators tried valiantly to pronounce, Ja cob Erlichman, Yoni Maltsman, and Jonah Karoll-whom the commentators finally managed to keep straight! Benji Salzman and Eli Schrayer helped turn things around on Saturday night against the Rockville, MD Lions in another victory 48-43. Sunday's game against the Hillel Heat of Ocean NJ, saw new scorers Josh Pliskin, Tzvi Herman, and Coby Drexler keep up our end of the game as we took the second-place finish. CJHS is excitedly laying out homecoming gear to celebrate the team's return.

This is Not A Coyote Peep out of your car or glance out the south windows, and you may be in for a surprise! The new statue on the athletic field has turned a few heads in these past two weeks! The coyote simulacrum designed to gently discourage flocks of geese (and their droppings!) is so ferociously lifelike it has

scared more than a few humans off the grass as well! When your heart has stopped pounding and you've changed your pants, stop by the south hallway to view the studio art class' exhibit, "This is Not a T-shirt."

Welcome Back CJHS is delighted to welcome back Ms. Lena Averbuch after her maternity leave.

Baruch Dayan Emet We regret to announce the passing of Sheldon Epstein, grandfather of senior Tali Geifman, freshman Sophie Geifman, alumnus Max Geifman ('12), and their brother Isaac. May God's presence comfort the Geifman/Epstein family among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

A Taste of Torah: Chayei Sarah In the 11th chapter of Deuteronomy - in what becomes the second paragraph of the Shema - God tells us, "I will give herbs in your fields for your cattle; and you will eat and be satisfied." (Deuteronomy 11:15) Noting the order of the verse, Rav Yehuda says in the name of Rav that one cannot eat until one feeds her animals (BT Brachot 40A). This seeming priority given to those who are dependent on us over ourselves is indirectly codified in the Shulchan Aruch when we are told that one who forgot to feed his animals is allowed to interrupt between blessing over their meal and eating his meal - in general forbidden - to ask someone to feed his animals. The Magen Avraham, connecting this piece to our Parasha, says that in terms of drinking, though, one drinks before offering a drink to her animals. He bases this on Rebecca, who after telling Abraham's servant, "Drink my master," (Genesis 24:18) then says, "I will also draw [water] for your camels." (24:19) But why make a distinction between food and water? Food is never an immediate need in the same way as water. While people can sustain for long periods without food, they cannot without water. For our immediate necessities we come first, while for things less immediately necessary, we must first recall those who depend on us - even if they are not humans. The order of Rebecca's kind actions remind us to prioritize ourselves, but only for that which we find most immediately necessary. --Mr. Joel Goldstein

CJHS salutes Pvt. Ka yce Miller ('08) w ith the US Marine Corps, who reports back to the old school from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. "Last year I was chosen to take part in a NATO cold weather response deployment where I attended cold weather training for a month in the Sierra Mountains in January at the mountain warfare training center in Bridgeport, California in preparation for a deployment to Norway above the arctic circle. Since then I've been training for an upcoming deployment as a part of a crisis response special MAGTF (marine air ground task force). Our primary mission is to provide rapid response for any crisis that should arise in Africa including embassy evacuation, humanitarian assistance and anything in between. I'm set to embark in mid January." Good luck, Kayce! We're proud of you! We also salute our recent graduates who are on shmira instead of in school! Alon Spevak ('14) is in the Givati infantry brigade, stationed in southern Israel. Gabe Gavrielov ('13) is in the Nachal infantry brigade, serving in Gaza for the next six months.
