Over 80 participants joined us this week as the preeminent scholars of the Jewish Theological Seminary descended upon CJHS for two days of study with our community during the Isidor and Rose Wagner Institute. The theme of the Institute was Avadim Hayinu: The Meaning of Servitude, Slavery and Redemption in Jewish Text and Jewish History. Attendees were treated to a variety of learning sessions on topics such as why we recline at the Pesach Seder and how modern human trafficking relates to the Jewish experience of slavery. The CJHS senior class also had the opportunity to learn with JTS Chancellor Arnold Eisen while the juniors studied with Professor Benjamin Sommer. One of the highlights of the Institute was the presentation of the Wagner Institute Essay Contest winners. Junior Hannah Given and Senior Ada Moses were each awarded a $5,000 college scholarship for their award-winning poetry highlighting the modern tensions between slavery and liberation. Follow the links to read Hannah's and Ada's thought-provoking poems for yourself!

Women's soccer blazed ahead this week, dodging rain and a 40-degree chill to take on Northtown and Cristo Rey. Jordan Krauss scored against Northtown, with a final score of 3-1. Come on out for the big Ida Crown game on Sunday and cheer on our Lady Tigers! Men's volleyball is hitting the court, taking on Holy Trinity on Monday, Lake Forest on Tuesday, and St. Benedict's last night. Way to go, JV Tigers! After several seasons of being eclipsed by the bigger guys, they are on a winning streak: JV beat Holy Trinity 25-20 and 2515, and emerged victorious a second time against Lake Forest 25-15 and 25-14. Varsity redeemed itself on Thursday, winning 25-10 and 25-17. Go Tigers!

and gun violence On Tuesday, there was a seminar on human trafficking held during lunch. Evan Gorstein, along with other STAND members, presented on this issue which is affecting people all across the globe, including many Americans. Then, on Wednesday during lunch, Gabe Wacks taught a seminar on gay rights, in which we learned about different laws and treatment of those of the LGBT community throughout the world. Following school on Thursday, a group of students attended the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs' "From Handguns to Hope" Seder. This mock seder, held at Beth Shalom Bnai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation was a very powerful experience. We heard speakers, rabbis, and reverends, as well as spoken word poetry, all presented in the framework of a Passover Seder. It was a call to action to unite as a single city, and create a better city in which youth do not have to be afraid to walk outside of their homes. On Friday during Tefillah, Dr. Guterman spoke on the issue of gun violence. During tefillah, STAND held an "Amidah," in which all the school was asked to stand up throughout Shacharit in solidarity with those whose human rights are denied. To complete Human Rights Week, this Saturday night, STAND is hosting the annual STAND Sleep-In, in which students are invited to spend the night at CJHS, all the while participating in a series of education and advocacy activities concerning various human rights issues, genocides, and conflict areas. The Sleep-In starts at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night, and ends at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Thanks to everybody for making this a fun and educational human rights week, and we hope to see you at the Sleep-In. We will be having a live blog during the event too! Check it out here."
La Vie Boheme Through the magic of Live in HD, CJHS has the marvelous opportunity to attend the Metropolitan Opera Company's performance of Puccini's La Boheme on Wednesday, April 9. The tickets are only $18.00 for students, $24.00 for adults, and $22.00 for seniors. The bus will leave for the return trip to CJHS at 10:00 p.m. To order tickets, please contact Ms. Friedman by the end of today, then bring a check made out to CJHS or cash (as long as there is an accompanying envelope or label with the name the ticket is for) to the office.

A Taste of Torah: Freedom From versus Freedom To In 1948, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan was quoted as saying:
"The establishment of the State of Israel is the second challenge of the modern world to the survival of Judaism. The first challenge came about 150 years ago, with our emancipation from political and
file:///C|/Users/tseymour/Desktop/Wagner%20Institute%20at%20CJHS.htm[5/5/2014 11:59:46 AM]
economic thralldom and with our admission into the body politic of western mankind. We have not yet recovered from the impact of that first challenge."
On Monday of the Wagner Institute, Rav Beit Sefer Zach Silver discoursed on the different kinds of freedom inherent in the Passover narrative, and how the issue is not freedom from slavery, but freedom to serve. Click here for the full sermon.
Alumni Trivia
Rena Forester ('10) is graduating from Indiana University in May with degrees in Elementary and Special Ed. She spent the first half of this semester student teaching in a general education kindergarten classroom in Bloomington. She is currently completing her special education student teaching placement at the same school in Bloomington. Rena reports, "I spend half of my day working with the inclusion specialist, both working with students in their home classrooms and pulling students out to work one-on-one or in small groups. I spend the other half of my day working in a community-based classroom with students who have significant intellectual disabilities. As I'm sure you know, teaching is exhausting but I am enjoying it and learning a lot!"
