as high school students, full of energy and excitement. The freshman class is composed of 24 graduates of Jewish day schools, one from a secular private school, and 12 from public middle schools. Our new students come from Chicago and the suburbs, and as far away as New York and Brazil! Our freshmen were joined on Monday by 11 transfer students from other public and private high schools: five sophomores and six new juniors! Hats off to the 48 peer buddies who opened the building to reach out to our newest Tigers! Highlights of new student orientation included an improv workshop led by performers from Improv Olympic, free pizza, CJHS tefillah training, and a tour of the campus. Thanks also to new student activities director Mr. Eskin, who treated the transfer students and their peer buddies to lunch at Taboun.
The P.O. is pleased to continue the gift card "Gelt" program. This program is designed to help families earn money toward their children's junior year Panim program and/or the Senior Israel Experience. Faculty and staff can also buy Gelt to support programs provided for the school by the P.O. By buying things you ordinarily purchase anyway, you can earn money which will be credited to your family or class for designated school trips. Contact Sheri Sandrof at ssandrof@cjhs.org or call her at 847.324.3723.

Flight 2015 A Poem for the Senior Class Seventeen am I And had I the hindsight of years hence Today I would exit the fast lane, Pull over to the curb, And in the late afternoon light Look back at the old house, Its windows through which I first viewed my lessons And the swing set that lifted me As close to heaven as I have ever been. But being seventeen, I accelerate, Coaxing my heart that the sun does rise Day after day on the same earth And I too will return this way. And yet some insistent awareness, Tutored by I know not exactly Tells me that tomorrow and tomorrow It is more the hurly burly of man and God, All the servants of time. So, as I say, I accelerate, Watching for the signage to the airport curb Where even now I imagine Waving my farewells to long-held loves, Entering the terminal, Eyeing the departure board, Racing through the concourses stretching into eternity, To board and be lifted unto the Unknown.

Way to go Zev Mishell, Mollie Kramer, and Jack Rubinstein for blazing the trail for our newest students! Last Thursday, ten intrepid students headed downstate to go camping with Mr. Griffith, Mr. Baumstark, Ms. Michelle Friedman, and Rabbi Silver. After setting up tents at the Starved Rock campground, the group headed down the road to the Mathiessen State Park to hike down into canyons. Sophomore Itamar Broekman quickly established himself as a champion climber while Jack Rubinstein impressed everyone with his talents at skipping rocks of all sizes across each stream they encountered.
Chefs Eli Ecanow and Joey Schrayer, and souschef Rose Johnson cooked up a fabulous doublechili dinner, followed by a roaring fire and the essential camping trip s'mores--thanks to Mr. Griffith and Mr. Baumstark for the great firewood expedition! Jack led the group in singing around the campfire under a clear night's stars, visible all the way to the horizon line. Following morning tefillot, the camping team headed back to Lake Cook Road, refreshed and ready to begin another year of building the CJHS community. CJHS Camping: We're Intense! We're looking forward to another adventure next year.
The Uniforms of Tefillah You wouldn't play a big game on any team out of uniform, would you? During the first two weeks of school, CJHS students and faculty are studying about the uniforms Jews wear during daily prayer: tallit and tefillin. School began on Wednesday morning by studying the four Biblical texts that make up the scrolls of tefillin, examining how these texts are arranged in the head and arm tefillin, then looking at the klafim (parchments) themselves. On Thursday, students focused on the meaning of the mitzvah, writing intentions for how they relate to the idea of wearing ritual objects. They will return to these ideas throughout the year. On Monday, we will continue with this program when we welcome rabbis in the community to teach us about the intersection of gender and the mitzvah of tefillin.
Senior Science Kicks Off School may just have begun, but Mrs. Levinson's AP Chemistry class has been back in the saddle for over a week, revving up the spectrophotometers in the lab. AP Physics C is loading up the calculus for another go at the motion sensors, while AH Biology is mapping out the course of evolution on this planet. Ms. Murphy's anatomy and physiology students started the year with a "Tour of Anatomy" lab practical. Moving around the room to different lab stations, they were asked to try to identify various specimens representative of the units to come. "Was that a buffalo mandible?" "Did I see a deer pelvis?" "I think this is a real heart!" The seniors are definitely ready for a year of new adventures!
From the P.O. Welcome back! We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer. We're extremely excited for the year ahead! Our CJHS P.O. Board and chair positions for this year are taking shape. It's our pleasure to introduce Debbie Copley as P.O. VicePresident and welcome back Rachel Gruenberg as Treasurer. The CJHS P.O. got an early start this year with a Back to School Parent Breakfast on Wednesday, August 6 at the home of Karen Ecanow. Thanks to everyone who attended this lovely program.

Introducing the CJHS P.O. Book Club Our first book is here at last! October 20, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at CJHS Once We Were Brothers by Ronald Balson Join us for an engaging evening with Ronald Balson. Mr. Balson will read from his novel, which is partially set in Chicago's North Shore, and discuss his inspiration for writing this book. Once We Were Brothers is the compelling tale of two boys and a family that struggles to survive in war-torn Poland. It is also the story of a young lawyer who must face not only a powerful adversary, but her own self doubts." For more information about the book or author, visit the webpage here.
Yearbook Portraits Attention parents: to order pictures for your student, please return the form your student received to the front office, along with a check payable to E Image Chicago. Seeking Alumni Trivia! Shabbat shalom to founding CJHS social studies teacher Ms. Sharna Marcus and CJHS alumnus Geoff Levin ('07), who met up in Israel this past week! Sharna, her husband Lior Chacham, and her daughter Maya, live in Netanya. Stay strong, everyone! We wish a Shabbat of peace and strength to all our alumni living and visiting in our homeland. Are you studying abroad? Making headlines? Making aliyah? Serving in the armed forces--or as a barefoot bread baker for social justice? Next week, our regular Alumni Trivia will be starting up again! Send fun facts, life updates, and parental kvelling to your returning editor Mrs. Shira Eliaser, seliaser@cjhs.org.
Sponsored Breakfast Happy birthday to Gavi Schankerman and Arthur Sredni. Many thanks to their families for sponsoring tasty bagels for breakfast!
A Taste of Torah
"We must devote our attention both to halakha and aggadah, to keva and kavanah, the Rabbinic schools of Ishmael and Akiva, to science and religion. In these terms, reading one item to the exclusion of another perhaps is more than ignorance, but a modern formula for heresy of the highest order. Reading one pole as the sole element in any part of life limits God's power and the human being's capacity to encounter her own potentials." --Rabbi Zach Silver Read Rabbi Silver's first day of school address here.
Shabbat Shalom Candlelighting this week, parashat Re'eh, will be at 7:25 p.m. Shabbat Shalom!
