How do you make a real difference in your child’s future?

One important way is to choose the right school. Children need reading, writing, science and math. They also need to learn what’s important in life. Catholic schools educate the whole child—in mind, heart, and spirit. They’re safe communities, where children get one-on-one attention from caring and dedicated teachers, and a strong sense of right and wrong.

Catholic school isn’t free, but for many parents, it’s worth every penny. Especially when you consider what children get in return. Faith, focus, and achievement. To learn more, hear what other parents have to say, and search our online schools directory, visit schools.archchicago.org

he days of students filling out worksheets at their desks for hours on end are long gone. Educators are exploring new and innovative ways to engage students and make learning an exciting adventure. GAME ON! “For us the material itself does not qualify as less engaging or more engaging. We have students as enthused and engaged with English grammar and Latin vocabulary as they are with physics or art,” says Phillip Jackson, founder of the Chicago Grammar School. One key to engaging students, he says, is turning activities into games. Classroom games can be simple yet effective. For example, at Chicago Grammar School, students use charades to learn Latin voSpecial Advertising Supplement

cabulary words. “Everyone gets a chance to act, everyone gets to write down an answer, everyone can get points for correct answers, and they end up truly understanding the vocabulary we are working on.” Any topic area can be made into a game, including the Black Plague. When thirdgraders at Chicago Grammar School studied the plague, their teacher used a variety of techniques. First, students visualized living in the Middle Ages, then they played a game called “They Didn’t Know” to cover facts unknown to people of that time, such as hand washing, followed the “Logical or Illogical” game to allow students to evaluate Middle Ages beliefs. “This could have been a dull lesson, yet connecting past knowledge and creating new knowledge through the premise of a game, the teacher ended up with a group of very engaged

thinkers,” Jackson says. CLASSROOM OR INVENTION LAB? One way to make classrooms innovative is to let the students be inventors. At Quest Academy, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program allows middle school students to create through discovery. They are encouraged to invent something. Some students are creating clothes with lights and exploring circuitry. Other interested in plants are inventing a new watering system for trees. Beth Blaetz, director of teaching and learning at Quest Academy, says that giving students the freedom to embark on a project that they have selected electrifies the classroom. “It’s an amazing atmosphere to walk into because continued on page 8 MAKING THE GRADE 2014 7

they are so engaged because they have choice. They need to have that choice to get engaged,” she says. SIMULATIONS BRING HISTORY ALIVE Educators seek to balance technology with helping students experience history first hand through simulations that have nothing to do with technology. For example, fourth-graders learn about the Pilgrims and that involves the entire class sitting in a small cardboard Mayflower replica. “It’s cramped and crowded. They eat dry, crusty bread and then they start to understand the pilgrimage and just how difficult it was,” explains Blaetz. When students arrived in the New World, they were sent outside to find food. She says teachers believe it is so essential for students to find his-

Act your age (really). Even as they learn and grow, we want your sons and daughters to act their age at Baker - to remain children who enjoy daily recess and have no desire to be older or popular or the 'cool kids' - because one of the best parts of childhood is actually being a child and ignoring the ever-changing social norms which maybe aren't so normal after all.

tory interesting. “Just reading in a book, you don’t feel it.” MOVING BEYOND ON THE CLASSROOM Some schools are moving beyond the four walls of the classroom to appeal to a variety of learners and help students see how what they are learning fits in with the world beyond school grounds. Geoffrey Jones, head of school at GEMS Academy, says the school location right in the Loop will give students access to the heart of Chicago when it opens in the fall. The Loop is not the limit, though, as students attending 60 GEM schools around the world Skype with each other. The schools also have international teacher exchanges in the Special Advertising Supplement

lower grades. Students in upper grades travel abroad. “By the time students are in high school, the students have shifted to a more independent model of pursuing a project. It is not just visiting another school but really making a connection to that community in another country.” ASK THE STUDENTS The best way to determine whether students are engaged and interested or not is to ask them. “Our classrooms are designed to be places where students are active in their own learning. Teachers will be engaging kids by asking students at the start of the day where they can study and grow that day, both individually and together as a class,” Jones says.

he sheer definition of a “non-traditional” school is constantly evolving. It’s a classification that can, in fact, mean something different to every parent, teacher and administrator. Yet, what stays the same is the unified desire for these innovative schools to offer something new and different to a whole new generation of students. From languages to sports to music instruction, the benefits of a non-traditional school Special Advertising Supplement

offering a non-traditional curriculum are many. “Most parents choose our school because not only do they learn everything that they would learn somewhere else academically, but they also learn another language at the same time,” explains Maria Fermi, founder of Language and Music School in Oak Park. “Not only do these students get proficient in the language at a young age, but they come out with experience in music.” Mi Sol Academy also offers a variety of

language immersion programs for students ages 3-6. “Learning a second language not only gives students the ability to communicate with different ethnic groups, but the exposure to other cultures cultivates more of an acceptance of others,” adds M. Erika Camarna, director and lead teacher. “And years from now, these are the students whose career choice will be that much more expansive.” And while the ability to learn a new lancontinued on page 12 MAKING THE GRADE 2014 11

guage is just one of the many examples of the benefits of non-traditional schools, there also is the fact that these added features often have a supplemental effect on the student’s other studies. “Music has a way of supplementing many other sorts of learning,” says Erin Fusco of the Music Institute of Chicago, which offers a variety of classes to students of all ages. “Many studies have shown that music studies can help people greatly with not only their math and analytical skills, but also their concentration skills in general.” And with obesity levels still on the rise, the staff at Chalk Preschool has gone so far as to even expand their physical education offerings. “We recently partnered with the My Gym franchise to offer their classes each day right here in our classrooms,” explains Angela Johnson, executive director at Chalk. “We look farther than the educational aspect of what we can offer to our students. Rather, we are all about serving the whole child.”

arents know that all children are unique, and more and more research is being done into the unique ways each child learns and processes information. Schools are responding to the challenge by creating classrooms that appeal to a variety of learning styles so that all students are engaged and learning. That boys and girls have different learning styles is no surprise. “Boys do learn differently than girls, and each student has his own unique

14 MAKING THE GRADE 2014

MTG2014.indd 14

learning style. The ‘cookie cutter’ approach to teaching and learning does not work. The ‘one size fits all’ philosophy does not work either,” explains Tim Viands, headmaster at Grand River Academy, a boys’ college prep boarding school in Ohio. The approach to the student as an individual is key to accommodating various learning styles. “We are not bound by preconceived notions as to how all children will learn. We are able to reach each child in his own way because

we teach individuals, not whole groups,” says Agnes Guerra, a directress at Brickton Montessori School. She works with kids 3 to 6 years olds who already display a wide range of learning styles. While some of her students display a clear preference for learning one specific way very early on, others are more flexible. As students age, their learning styles become more obvious. At Grand River Academy, each student is assessed so that his learning style can be identified. Special Advertising Supplement

12/13/13 6:06 PM

“In any given class, students may be writing notes, supplementing notes, teaching the class in order to show mastery of the subject, doing homework on the board, and doing homework at the desk … We also recognize that boys need to move around, as they perform better on average when standing rather than sitting. They like participating actively in projects and collaborative learning rather than being lectured. We provide all of these options.” Parents are often familiar with the idea of people learning visually, auditorily and kinesthetically. Howard Gardner’s research, however, led him to conclude that there are nine different approaches to learning. Seventhand eighth-graders at Montessori Academy of Chicago learn about Gardner’s nine ways. They give six major presentations throughout the year and must alternate styles, with each presentation done using a different intelligence. Fosca Shackleton White, head of school, explains that Maria Montessori incorporated the different styles into her method of education 100 years ago and that, as a result, “students today experience the intelligences themselves.” She says the Montessori philosophy and approach “applies to so many learning styles, some are low sensory, some are high sensory. It applies to all different children because it is an inclusive

style of education. At the end of the day, you need someone who can be independent and has the internal self-discipline to make a plan.” The Montessori approach also gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their work. “While a teacher is there to guide them, students have open avenues to make their learning according to their own pace and style,” says Mehreen Alvi, academic coordinator at the Intercultural Montessori Language School with campuses in Chicago and Oak Park. Students at the school learn in two languages – English and Spanish, Chinese or Japanese. Learning a language appeals to both visual and auditory learners, but the school also strives to appeal to other learning styles through materials and through experiences outside of the classroom. Teachers incorporated all of those when the students were learning about zoology, including a trip to Brookfield Zoo where the class learned about the six animals it had adopted to “bring zoology alive.” Students sometimes need to be encouraged to move out of their comfort zone and try new classes, which may help them discover ways of learning. “By encouraging boys to sample a variety of different electives, they may find a strength or passion that they never knew they had,” says Viands.

Make the most of high school: Tips for parents of college-bound students

I

By PATTI MINGLIN

f you are a parent of a child headed to high school or college, you probably have a list of questions already formulating in your head: Which school is right for us? How do I make sure my child is academically and socially prepared? Are all these honor classes really worth it? Regardless of the questions, there is one thing every parent is trying to accomplish— finding the right educational fit. “Finding a high school or college is similar

Special Advertising Supplement

MTG2014.indd 17

to finding your mate,” says Grace Moody, assistant principal at Alcott College Prep in Chicago. “It’s a relationship—it’s not just about the school giving your student an education, it’s also about what your student can give to back to the school community.” Here are some tips every parent should know: START EARLY Even when your child is in middle school, start talking to him or her about their interests. “High school is important in narrowing down

choices when you look at colleges and universities,” says Michael Horton, headmaster of the British School in Chicago. “What are their talents? What experiences are they looking for in a high school?” In addition to making sure they have a great high school experience, start doing casual college visits. “Stop in and visit college campuses during your family vacations,” suggests Jeremy Klyn, director of admissions for Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights. continued on page 18 MAKING THE GRADE 2014 17

Starting the college conversation early also helps to eliminate students’ fear and anxiety as they approach graduation. “We don’t want to add to the culture of anxiety and stress,” says Jeff Bell, head of school for Beacon Academy in Evanston. “We are hoping to create an environment where students feel they can be the architects of their own education, even in high school.” PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL-SPONSORED PROGRAMS Most high schools offer open houses or college fairs, giving students and parents a taste of what is possible. In addition to in-school visits, parents should look for general informational sessions that will help them navigate the process. “Mondays during the summer, we bring in college representatives to talk to parents and students about things such as admissions, scholarships and athletic eligibility,” says Rich Borsch, associate principal of Fenwick High School in Oak Park. DON’T OVERLOOK FOREIGN LANGUAGE Most colleges and universities require students to take at least two years of a foreign language, but many experts feel that is definitely a minimum recommendation. “Having only one language in your portfolio

Help them develop skills they need Time management is a huge skill for kids. At Resurrection College Prep High School, the block schedule, with 82 minutes per class every other day, not only allows students and teachers to delve into the material more deeply, but helps students plan their homework and projects around outside activities, work or family commitments, says Kathleen Heneghan, communications coordinator at Resurrection. The school also encourages students to talk to teachers and use them as a resource, something they should learn to be comfortable with before they leave for college, she says. Resurrection builds in a daily seminar period in the middle of the day where students can work on group projects or meet with teachers or advisors. “They are learning how to manage business as a student,” she says. Just as Resurrection does for each of its students in assigning an adult in the building as an advisor, Heneghan suggests parents help their students find someone in their high school they can turn to as an advisor or mentor.

isn’t enough anymore,” says Eva Hoeckner, German professor at Lycee Francais de Chicago. Some high schools offer full immersion programs and/or cultural exchanges that give students an opportunity to develop skills that go far beyond just learning a second language. “There is a different brain development taking place when you learn a second language,” adds Hoeckner. “Students who know at least one additional language usually have improved memory and perception and can switch easily between tasks, making them great multi-taskers.”

their passions through extracurricular activities, there is such a thing as being too involved. “Colleges are not looking for the ‘Yearbook Kid’—the student who participates in everything, but doesn’t make a difference in anything,” says Borsch. Colleges want to see that students take on leadership roles and are involved in activities that are meaningful to them, their schools and even their communities. “Students should always be looking for ways to get involved with the community at large,” says Suzanne LoSasso, college counselor/IB coordinator for Beacon Academy. “Get out from behind the school walls and see what you can do to make a difference.” CHOOSE FOR THE RIGHT REASONS Look at the full college experience, don’t just zone in on one aspect, such as athletics. “If your student

chooses a college purely for a sport, he or she may find themselves stuck in an environment that doesn’t work for them,” says Horton. Also, don’t write off an institution for a financial reason. “Just because you see the sticker price, don’t assume it isn’t affordable,” says Klyn. “Start with the admissions counselor, be up front about your financial concerns. They will lead you to additional resources that may make the school more budget-friendly.” Experts also caution parents to not get too involved in your student’s final school selection. “Always keep your child in mind,” says Moody. “Just because you fall in love with a campus doesn’t mean your child will. It’s hard, but you have to take yourself out of the equation and find the very best fit for your student. After all, he or she is the one that will have to spend the next four years on campus.” Adds Borsch, “If you have really listened to your child and know in your gut this is the right place, go with it. Choosing a college isn’t a trophy, it’s a match.”

hances are your children have no problem using the family computer and are likely better than you are at navigating the iPad and smartphone. While technology is prevalent in both the home and school life of today’s kids, they need more than quick fingers. The Common Core Curriculum Standards identify digital literacy and research as important components of a strong curriculum so Chicago area schools are exploring a variety of approaches when it comes to teaching digital 22 MAKING THE GRADE 2014

MTG2014.indd 22

literacy. Because many students have access to technology at home, the focus in the classroom has shifted. “Kids come to us as great digital consumers. They are very savvy with the technology, but I wouldn’t say that they are digitally literate,” says Elissabeth Legendre, the middle school Latin teacher at The Latin School in Chicago. For many schools, teaching digital literacy is a thread woven throughout the curriculum and it starts early, even as young as 2 at the Little GEMS International Preschool in Chi-

cago. “Starting at this age and using technology in an active manner allows kids to become aware of how it can be used. They see it a lot and are making those connections with their home life, their parents and with the world. By making those connections early on and as they approach kindergarten they have that foundation of exposure and exploration,” says Diane Schael, head of school. The early start marks a shift in thinking. “It used to be that digital literacy was thought of as a middle school issue, but we’ve shifted our thinking to be more proactive,” says Special Advertising Supplement

12/13/13 11:33 AM

Barry Wadsworth, lower school head of the Avery Coonley School. “We like to put questions of technology on parents’ radars early. We empower parents to take a stance that acknowledges that tech is here and beneficial in many ways, but families need to be thinking about what is appropriate for them,” he says. Similarly, the Cove School sends home Family Tip Sheets as part of its Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum to encourage family conversation. “As a school, it is our responsibly to provide students with the knowledge and skills to navigate digital technology safely, responsibly and with purpose,” says Mark Fjor, technology coordinator. Learning digital literacy includes learning effective online research skills. “One of the most important priorities in teaching digital literacy is an understanding of the tools used to access content while online as well as strategies for how to find relevant information. Generating questions and identifying keywords for searching are important skills,” says Fjor. Once students are good searchers, teachers address evaluating the validity of a source online and how to wade through the sheer abundance of information online. “One of the big priorities is teaching students how to determine what sources to trust,” says Laura Storino, business teacher at PHOTO COURTESY OF LITTLE GEMS INTERNATIONAL PRESCHOOL

Queen of Peace High School in Burbank. Wasdworth says students will benefit most from “an integrated program where kids use tools of tech in sophisticated ways as they move through the program and you’re teaching critical thinking. (With such an effort), then a school is already teaching kids to evaluate bias and perspective and other critical evaluations.” Case studies are a valuable tool for teaching the importance of responsible online behavior. High school students at Queen of Peace examine how people have been held accountable for their online behavior, from a person who lost her job because her inappropriate Halloween costume appeared online to a former student athlete whose name coaches would Google when watching her compete. At Cove, students analyze scenarios presented in videos and then propose solutions. Digital literacy also means helping students understand how technology works best for their learning style. “The iPad gives kids a lot of choice. They can read a physical book or ebook, they can write homework in pen or type it. When showing me what they’ve learned, they can make a video, talk about it or make a slide show,” Legendre says. “I tell my students that we are all learning about this new tool at the same time. I encourage them to come and show me. I am the master of the content, but I am not the master of the iPad.”

hen the world is hurting, we are taught from a young age to find a way to help. So when news of the devastating November tornadoes reached the students of Cardinal Joseph Bernadine School in Orland Hills recently, it didn’t take long for the youngsters to go into action. “As we speak, our students are not only working to raise money for some of our students’ relatives who lost everything in the tornadoes, but also for a family who recently lost their home due to a fire,” explains Religion Coordinator Mary Vlaming of Cardinal Joseph Bernadine School. “It’s just part of the nature of our school’s mission to help when we can.” 26 MAKING THE GRADE 2014

MTG2014.indd 26

Indeed, while changes in curriculums and requirements for Illinois schools fill the news these days, it is the work of many of Chicagoland’s faith-based schools that deserves a bit more of the attention. As teachers at many public schools frantically teach through the fast-paced curriculums of subjects such as math and science, the staff at faith-based schools throughout the area are realizing the need to teach their students more. “Many of us struggle to live a faith filled life by letting too much of the secular world into our influence,” Vlaming says. “As a faithbased school, our teachers and staff model a Christ-like attitude every day. We share in a community of faith at our liturgies every week, we open every school day with prayer and no

matter what, social service is at the core of everything we do.” Sheryl Meyer, executive director of Luther North College Prep in Chicago, says it’s about living values. “For example, our theme for this year has been service, so our students will be spending much time looking at homelessness in Chicago and seeing what they can do out within those neighborhoods. In this school, we not only care about people out in the world, but we also truly care about one another, and that can make quite a difference within a student population.” In fact, Meyer says that this underlying principle of caring for others can change the entire atmosphere of a school and cut down Special Advertising Supplement

on social difficulties such as lack of self-esteem or bullying amongst students. Infusing these faith-based principles throughout a daily curriculum is something that many teaching professionals say is essential in the development of a student’s overall wellbeing, spiritual health and the often delicate religious formation. “We meet the kids where they are at, and that does not mean just academically,” Meyer says. “Lots of kids come in here as nonbelievers … and that’s OK. We live through the Gospel rather than insisting that it’s something they should believe in. We give them the space to learn and make the choice on their own.” And while making this choice can be challenging, young people seem to thrive in being surrounded by supportive faculty, staff and fel-

low students throughout this stage of life. To further help support their students’ faith lives, Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst came up with the idea of “Faith Families” about three years ago. “It’s really about surrounding our students with people they can count on,” says Principal Cathy Linley of Immaculate Conception. “A lot of schools talk about being a family, but we give our students constant ways where they can not only be a faith family within their own school, but also within their family, their community and their world.” From pairing older students with younger students to help with their reading studies or faith families joining together for monthly meetings, relationships build stronger every day. continued on page 28

“I see the most difference in our older children and how they act within the faith families we have set up,” Linley says. “I always stress to them how important they are to the younger kids and how the choices they make and the behavior they demonstrate impacts everyone.” Of course, this faith-based impact becomes even stronger in a student’s life when it is taken outside of the classroom. “The sophomores are currently studying the Book of Kings, dealing extensively with the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem,” explains Rabbi Zachary Silver of Chicagoland Jewish High School about a recent trip the class took to visit the Baha’i Temple. “The underlying question during this year of study is, ‘What defines sacred space.’ Seeing the masterpiece of the Baha’i Temple continues to foster conversation in class and students are encouraged to incorporate this experience into their own lives, as they articulate their own understandings of sacred space.” Students at The Frances Xavier Warde School also thrive during the time when they can take the ideals of faith to others within the community. In fact, each student at the school is asked to volunteer for at least three hours during the school year, with seventh- and eighthgraders asked to volunteer 15 hours of service. “Service to the community and beyond is part of our every day,” explains Clare Hurrelbrink, religious coordinator at The Frances Xavier Warde School’s Old St. Patrick’s campus. “We are committed to our goal of reaching 5,000 service hours as a school.” Vlaming says, “It’s time for a brand new day. It’s about transforming from the perception of an “I” based world to a “We” based world, where we can do all things through Christ.” Special Advertising Supplement

he students at Total Child Preschool and Childcare Center in Evanston probably grimace at a few of the items found on their lunchtime plate. Yet they try it nevertheless. “We serve family-style meals, where everyone is given a little bit of everything,” explains Beth Ruppe, director of Total Child Preschool and Childcare Center. “It’s really important for students to try things numerous times. Just because they didn’t like something three months ago doesn’t mean they won’t like it now.” As complicated as a child’s palate can often be, it’s imperative that a diverse combination of food is offered. While this task was once solely parents’ responsibility, more and more schools are realizing the importance of their own school meal programs. “A typical lunch for our students includes 30 MAKING THE GRADE 2014

MTG2014.indd 30

raw green pepper strips, brown rice and baked chicken with cantaloupe cubes for snack,” says Heidi Dellibovi, co-director of Creative World Montessori School in La Grange. “Low glycemic carbohydrates such as brown rice or wheat bread give children steady energy throughout the day and helps avoid those dreaded meltdowns.” But in a world where food allergies and food restrictions run rampant, the responsibility of providing students with a good and nutritious meal can be challenging. “The parents are able to see the menu at the beginning of the week, so they know what their child is eating,” adds Dellibovi, who notes that favorite meals for her students include cheese quesadillas with salsa and tacos with black beans and cheese. “We monitor whether a food choice is not being eaten and alter it as needed and rotate the menu every three weeks, which keeps the menu fresh.”

Just last year, students at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic School in Naperville were introduced to a number of menu changes that better incorporate healthier food choices into their day. Their weekly hot meals now include a main entrée, a vegetable and a fruit serving with a small dessert. “Our main goal was to provide better quality food and healthier food choices, but also keep in mind that since we only offer it one day a week, we wanted it to be ‘fun’ food choices for them,” explains Teri Nawara, who chaired the new and improved hot lunch program alongside Christine Brouch. “We did several taste testings with a pilot group of students to test many variations of ‘healthy’ to find the right mix for the program.” While offering nutritious options might begin the process, many schools often find themselves combating some of the bad habits their students learned at home. “Dessert does not Special Advertising Supplement

have to be a cake or a cookie and a doughnut on the way to school is not the best of breakfasts,” says Ruppe, whose school uses the services of organic-based provider Gourmet Gorilla. “We want to give our students a solid base of food while they are here at school, which is why we are devoted to proving quality food that meets all of the nutritional guidelines. When children eat better, they will function better during the rest of the day.” Perhaps Morgan Park Academy has one of the unique programs in the area. The school regularly partners with nearby Country House restaurant to offer Morgan Park Academy students, faculty, and staff a varied, healthy, and nutritious diet on a daily basis. Making frequent use of produce grown right in Morgan Park Academy’s campus garden, Country House only offers high quality, freshly made food such as roasted chicken, pizza from scratch, and homemade salads and dressings.

It omits the usual fatty, premade options. Other schools are trying out many options. For the students at St. Stanislaus Kostka School, Stephen Covey’s Leader in Me program has become an integral part of the school’s curriculum and has dramatically affected the food choices students make and their nutrition. In the Covey program, students are taught every decision reflects the need to make yourself a better person, make those around you better, and to take ownership for choices from grades to nutrition. Using a hands-on approach to learning, students, faculty and parents partnered with DePaul University’s School of Nursing to build four garden beds on school grounds and planted a variety of vegetables. Students are so invested in their own healthy choices they can be found snackcontinued on page 32

ing on green beans and tomatoes while playing. The garden program has been so successful that the school and students plan to increase the number of garden beds to incorporate into the school lunches and ultimately to offer plots to families and community members. At Chicago Waldorf School, students eat their lunch from home or from the school’s organic lunch program with their teachers in the comfort of their own classroom. It doesn’t allow candy bars or soda in the meals. “It’s a positive type of peer pressure. The Chicago Waldorf School tends to attract families who already have a high level of “nutritional intelligence.” The culture of the school and its emphasis on developing healthy life habits encourage kids to make appropriate food choices,” says Anderson, a parent and a developer of Waldorf’s new hot lunch program.

ville, sspeterandpaulschool.com, holds several fundraisers, but if Dave Fox had to pick his favorite, it would be the annual Fun Run. “The Fun Run allows our students to get sponsors for a mile run around our school campus. They enjoy the out-of-uniform day and the ability to run with their friends in the afternoon, but they are able to raise money to not only help the community, but to help their school.” The school also holds a golf outing to raise money for tuition assistance and an annual auction that not only raises money for the school, but provides a fun night out for families. Families at Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines are passionate about fundraising. “One of our school’s philosophical tenets is to teach and encourage our students to give back to those less fortunate,” says Tim Costello, head of school. “Our students are very empathetic toward various causes, some close to home, others farther afield.” While they host many fundraisers throughout the school year, SAA parents and faculty support the Spring Gala, which helps raise funds to bridge the gap between operating funds and expenses for the school. Key elements of the gala include live and silent auctions. Four years ago, the school added a fund-a-project initiative to the gala repertoire, which raises tens of thousands of dollars for special “wish list” projects, such as providing technology in every classroom, theater department enhancements, a new science lab and equipment, and faculty professional development.

Oak Park’s Alcuin Montessori School’s Annual Auction & Gala takes place each spring and combines the fast-paced action of an online auction with the fun and elegance of a live auction and gala, says Alejandra Valera, director of advancement at Alcuin. This year’s live auction is April 26 while the online auction takes place at alcuin.org a week before the gala and features a fun e-Bay style auction where people bid for items like designer purses, hotel stays, clothing and toys. St. Celestine School in Elmwood Park does many types of fundraisers throughout the year, but one of its most successful is the annual fashion show where students, parents, and teachers become the models. Maria Malo, director of development, says the school raffles off huge baskets of items donated by the classrooms and local businesses to raise money. “Even after 75 years, this continued on page 36

tradition has stayed strong,” she says, crediting the volunteer Parents’ Club in making sure it stays exciting year after year. The next fashion show is in the fall. Keshet’s most successful fundraiser is its annual Rainbow Banquet, which has grown over the last 25 years from 500 guests to more than 1,400. The 2013 event, which featured The Temptations, raised more than $250,000 to benefit Keshet’s educational scholarships, vo-

cational training and recreational programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. “When an event is about supporting children with disabilities, those who come out to support it are warm and special people encompassing a wide spectrum of those who have been personally touched by a child with disabilities to those who are grateful that Keshet exists in case they ever need us,” says Keshet’s Deb Weiner. “From a purely fundraising point of view, I think part of the success can be attributed to the way we engage our donors throughout

the year. Communication is key and at Keshet we talk to them as much as possible – not just when it’s time to ask for support,” Weiner says. keshet.org Students play a big role in fundraising at Grace Lutheran School in River Forest, graceriverforest.org. This year students from preschool through eighth grade raised $13,000 for the school at the first annual Walk with Grace Walkathon. They also collected 10 wagonloads of food for the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry from households along the route. A picnic lunch and class games in Priory Park capped off a morning of fun.

As a parent, you’re the most important influence on your child’s future. But what about the other people in his or her life? At a Catholic school, your child will receive an outstanding academic foundation from people who share your values. Nationally, Catholic school students outperform others on tests for math, reading and science. They also lead in graduation rates, and they’re the most likely to go on to college. Catholic school students also receive a solid moral and spiritual foundation. After all, Catholic schools have always believed Christian teachings belong in school. To learn how you can make a Catholic school your choice for education, please call or visit us today. st. roBert BeLLArMiNe sChooL

CHALK Preschool is excited to announce...

An EXCLUSIVE collaboration with our friends at My Gym. In January 2014 we will integrate My Gym’s successful curriculum into our daily programming.

Here's what you can expect: *No additional fees *New equipment to facilitate a more comprehensive physical program *Staff/teacher training to ensure safety and mastery of the My Gym curriculum *Dedicated time for structured gross motor lessons: Circle-time fitness activities, songs, dance, and puppet shows, special games, relays, rides, adventures, group tumbling, and original activities, all uniquely crafted to create the perfect experience of movement and fitness. *Skills children will be working on: Jumping, climbing, tumbling, balancing, strength-building, agility, flexibility, spatial awareness, hand eye coordination, teamwork, and general sports skills. *Building Blocks Program: Students are encouraged to achieve goals in their physical and social development by earning stickers, ribbons, and trophies. Each child will have a Building Blocks poster to hang in their home so the whole family can celebrate each accomplishment. *Cognitive and emotional benefits: Students will learn cause and effect and the importance of ‘trying’ while developing confidence, self esteem, positive morals/values, empathy, and respect for peers and authority. This innovative and exclusive collaboration reinforces CHALK’s commitment to providing the most well-rounded educational experience possible.
