9 ways parents can establish good parent-teacher relationships School experts share their best advice

he relationship between parents and teachers is both unique and important – and it has a big impact on the child. There is a lot parents can do to establish a successful parent-teacher relationship. To help, school administrators from across Chicagoland offer their tried-and-true strategies and suggestions.

1

be proactiVe sharing information “Share as much information as possible about your child,” advises Debbie Mytych, director of early childhood programs at Resurrection Lutheran Preschool in Chicago. “It can be uncomfortable, but it is in the best interest of your child.”

MTG2015.indd 7

Karen Meskill, principal of Saints Peter and Paul School in Naperville, encourages parents to share what may be going on at home and any social concerns, and to do so as soon as possible. “I can’t think of a situation where it didn’t help a child to share information with the teacher in a confidential manner. If teachers know ahead of time, they can have strategies off the bat to help that child be successful and comfortable.” Meskill also advises sharing any information about what has worked well for the child in previous classrooms. “We want to keep that consistency and progress moving forward.” “By establishing open communication between parents and teacher, there’s a partnership that’s formed with both sides working for the benefit of a little human being who

depends on both sides,” says Alejandra Valera, director of advancement at Alcuin Montessori School in Oak Park.

2

model good communication and positiVity Communication is vital to making sure the parent-teacher relationship is positive, and that includes not only what parents communicate, but also how. When talking about teachers in front of children, Mytych encourages parents to be positive and joyful. “Children pick up vibes and they know when things are good,” she says. “We want children to pick up the positive at an early age.” Phillip Jackson, executive director of continued on page 8 Making the grade 2015 7

1/5/15 5:42 PM

Parentteacher relationships continued from page 7

Chicago Grammar School, also emphasizes that parents need to model good communication for their children. “The tone of voice and how you convey information is very important,” he says.

3

Volunteer in your child’s classroom Spending time in the classroom can benefit not only your child, but it can strengthen several relationships. “When parents bring their talents and skills into the classroom, it helps them bond better with the teacher and the class, as well as their own child,” explains Jackson. “Volunteering in the classroom is a great way to build relationships,” agrees Valera. “I always tell parents to find a niche that works for them.” For instance, she says one father who was unavailable during the school day started an after-school running club that teachers also joined. “It was a great example of a parent sharing something he loves with our school community.”

Have faith in your child’s teachers “Chances are your child’s teacher has valuable insight of situations. Younger students are often not able to recall specifics or give an accurate overall interpretation of events,” says Erika Camerena, director and founder of Mi Sol Academy, an early childhood Montessori center in Orland Park. “Teachers, especially Montessori teachers, have a unique perspective and oftentimes see social behavioral aspects that the parent might not be aware of.” That faith and confidence benefits the adults as well as the students. “When children know that their parents trust their teachers, it puts them at ease as well,” Valera says, noting that it

is true for all ages. “As kids get older, it is important that a positive parent-teacher relationship continue because kids are more aware of the relationship and capable of looking at the depth of it. If there’s no communication between parent and teacher, they will wonder why.”

5

Remember no one is perfect Parents need to allow teachers to be human beings, and Jackson says that giving the grace to make mistakes from all parties involved is important in having a successful relationship. “No one is perfect. No students, parents, teachers, or administrators get everything right every single time.” “Most people have good intentions all the way around,” he adds, noting that maintaining a sense of humor can go a very long way toward good communication.

6

Don’t always rely on email “All communication that revolves around specific concerns or more complex issues should be communicated in person or by telephone,” suggests Camarena. “Emails and messaging are not appropriate because misunderstandings in meaning and intentions cannot be clarified in the moment and the participants are left to speculate and assume, oftentimes in error.” Jackson adds: “It is hard to show empathy in an email.” He notes that while email is fine for housekeeping issues, for anything else teachers would prefer a oneon-one meeting.

7

Trust your older children to take the reins As children enter high school, parents are a part of the high school experience but their role does change. “We interview both parents and students because in many ways parents are an integral part of the institution with both their role and level of involvement,” says Jeff Bell, head of school at Beacon Academy, a Montessori high school in EvanSpecial Advertising Supplement

ston. “While parents are partners in their child’s education, we very much want to create a situation where the student is driving the bus and taking responsibility for his/ her own education and learning,” Bell explains. “Give high school students the opportunity to take the reins.”

8

don’t fear communication from school While many parents cringe when they see the school information pop up on caller ID, parents should not always be afraid when hearing from their child’s school. “Often parents fear communication from school, but sometimes it is very positive,” says Bell. “Our teachers reach out to tell parents they were impressed by something their child did. We give positive feedback and hope to give the

parents a sense of the life of their child at school.” Kathy Irvin, director of the Early Childhood Program at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, adds that parents should read everything that comes home from school, whether in an email, letter or newsletter. “Open up that backpack. The answers might be there.”

let the teachers teach, but support learning eVery night Parents are always asking Irvin what they can do at home. If they want to extend the love of learning at home, reading is a huge area, she says. “… Read to your child every night for as long as they’ll let you read to them, even when they are readers themselves.” Snuggle together, read for pure enjoyment, fall in love with stories and characters, she says.

If it’s important to you and your child, it’s important to us.

The world is round. Why put your child in a box? At Chicago Waldorf School, every child is an athlete, a musician, a scientist, an avid reader. Excellence is a given—it’s how we teach that changes everything. For example: In the Kindergartens, play is the hard work. It takes a lot of focus to create imaginary scenes and keep the play going! Our first and second graders have a full and vigorous day in school, so homework is not assigned until 3rd grade. By middle school, the joy of learning has taken root, and homework becomes a welcome addition.

not-so-standardized learning

Independent schools offer their take on Common Core

T

by shannan younger

he Common Core State Standards are the source of much discussion among both educators and parents. Common Core standards apply to public schools in the 45 states that have adopted it, including Illinois. But what about private schools? Independent private schools in Illinois are not bound by the standards, which were first introduced by an association of governors nationwide in 2009 and subsequently backed 12 Making the grade 2015

MTG2015.indd 12

by the Obama Administration with the goal of establishing uniform, national educational standards for students in kindergarten through high school. Fosca White, head of school and co-founder of Montessori Academy of Chicago, says Montessori standards already encompass the Common Core naturally so she plans no changes in her classrooms to adapt to Common Core. In fact, many students at Montessori Acad-

emy of Chicago are meeting Common Core standards earlier than public school students. For example, a primary classroom of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old students will include a presentation tray with one bead, a bar of 10 beads, a square of 100 beads and a cube of 1,000 beads helping students identify the 1s, 10s and 100s, a Common Core standard for first-graders. In addition, White notes that students are introduced to fractions in the primary classroom far earlier than specified by Common Core. Special Advertising Supplement

1/5/15 5:43 PM

“As an authentic Montessori school, our focus is giving the best education possible to the students and, yes, some of our children are well above the Common Core,” she says. Rob Huge, head of school at Greenfields Academy in Chicago, believes that the timing of the Common Core standards does not always align with student readiness. Huge gives the example of a first grade geometry standard regarding shapes that asks children to compose two-dimensional or three-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape. “If a child is trying to solve a story-based real-world problem that requires them to use this skill they are much more likely to actively engage and learn the skill,” Huge says. “If a child isn’t interested in the challenge this year, that’s OK. That child may be really interested in shapes the next year and that is the right time to help them develop the skill based on a subject they are interested in.” Learning, he says, isn’t linear. It’s exponential. “By creating artificial limits on what students can learn when, schools are inherently

limiting children’s chances for deeper learning,” he says. “You could say we use the Common Core in an a la carte way by focusing on standards with a clear ‘why’.” Mila Cohen, outreach co-chair at Chicago Friends School, explains that the school’s focus extends beyond academic standards. “Parents who choose Chicago Friends School agree with the premise of high academic standards that motivated the adoption of the Common Core, yet are concerned with the resulting disproportionate focus on testing that minimizes every other subject that is necessary for a wellrounded education,” she says. “Children are not standardized,” she says. “Chicago Friends School recognizes this with differentiated learning and a belief that quality of character is as important as intellectual growth.” Independent private elementary and middle schools are aware that their students will likely face the standards and standardized testing at some point in the future.

“Chicago Friends School is confident that our children will gain all the academic skills necessary to easily transition into a Common Core based curriculum in high school and, more importantly, grow into thriving global citizens,” says Cohen. Preparedness for the future is also what motivates independent schools to administer standardized tests, but with a different purpose and more freedom found in public schools bound by the Common Core. “Standardized testing has its benefits and we utilize those benefits. We offer the NWEA MAP test twice each year and parents are given the option to opt-in. We present it as a nostakes tool that helps us measure growth,” Huge says. At Montessori Academy of Chicago, students take standardized tests as a practical life activity. “We don’t teach to the test, and we don’t use them to evaluate teachers or students, but we give them because students need to know how to take tests with confidence,” White says. Unlike public schools, independent schools can continue that focus on preparing students for future success, using Common Core Standards to the extent they feel they are useful.

At the heart of Roycemore’s mission is the expectation that each student will be known personally and valued by the entire school community as an individual with unique talents and abilities. are boys and girls so different?

Ways local schools handle gender differences in the classroom by shannan younger

ost people accept that boys and girls are different, but the questions of just how different they are and how those gender differences impact learning, however, are much less settled. Chicago-area schools take a variety of approaches to addressing the differences between genders in the classroom.

Special Advertising Supplement

MTG2015.indd 17

“There is a lot of information and opinion on this question, but at the British School we have not found the need to treat the learning of boys and girls differently,” says Michael Horton, headmaster of the British School of Chicago. “Ability does not depend on gender and we have found that both girls and boys like the same subjects if they are introduced to them at

an early age,” Horton says. He points out that the goal is the same for all students, male or female. “We want all of our students to be confident, self-assured and successful learners, and to achieve this we concentrate on their ability and not their gender.” It is important that both male and female continued on page 18 Making the grade 2015 17

boys and girls continued from page 17

teachers are seen as successful in specialist subjects, such as science, math, art or music, he says. Melinda Orzoff, lower school division head at Roycemore School in Evanston where they have mixed gender classrooms, stresses the importance of being able to differentiate instruction, which Horton also stressed. “The most important part of a teacher imparting knowledge is to treat the children the same while knowing their particular learning style.” There isn’t one learning style for one gender and one for the other gender, however. “We are all wired differently. Boys and girls are wired differently, but it is hard to generalize. It is so individual. Every child is so different. You have to maximize learning based on each child’s wiring.” At The Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, gender balance is one of many factors the school takes into consideration when creating incoming classes. “We look at gender in the classroom as a way of keeping balance,” says Rebecca Malotke-Meslin, director of admissions and marketing.

“I don’t think there is a decided difference in the way that our teachers grab the attention of our students. We have the luxury of having small class sizes, which offers opportunity for individualized instruction,” she says. “We try to push our students as high as they can go, so our teachers are cognizant of those individual needs. The teachers tune in to what each child needs, and that academic piece doesn’t know a gender,” Malotke-Meslin says. Sacred Heart Schools in Chicago takes a different approach. Students are in a mixed age classroom for kindergarten but first- through eighth-grade classrooms are single sex. The campus is co-educational, with boys and girls together for lunch, recess, afterschool activities and other occasions. Betsy Fallon teaches a classroom of firstgrade boys. She says one of the benefits is that it “allows boys to be boys.” “We celebrate their energy rather than inhibiting it. We get excited about the fact that they want to move and get engaged. My students are not being compared to females, who do not need movement in order to learn.” Other benefits she lists include the sense of camaraderie and family within the classroom, which she notes is found in both genders’ classrooms, as well as the ability to teach specifically

to the male brain. Doing so involves both a different approach to presenting material, but also setting up her classroom differently than a female classroom. “The male brain stays more active when there is movement involved, so we have a mini trampoline in the room and use it to do a lot of transitions, with hops on it and onto the carpet. The female brain transitions easily, but the male brain needs to get up and move, which tells it that it is moving on to another task,” she explains, also noting that the boys have a few different kinds of seats, including wedge-shaped seats and chairs that allow for movement and activity, as well as the option to use a standing table. Many parents are not aware that singlesex classrooms on a co-educational campus exist in the area, she says, but “when they come through the door, they recognize what a unique environment we are.” Fallon says it is key parents learn about all of the school options available and pick the environment where they feel their son or daughter will thrive. “How wonderful that we live in a time where there are so many educational options that are tailor-made to meet the needs of the individual.”

Young three-year-olds entering our pre-primary grades begin their global journey with an immersion in French. Ten-year-olds embark on school led trips that take them around the city and… the world. High school students discover speaking Mandarin takes them to places they never dreamed of. Founded nearly 20 years ago, The Lycée draws from the best of French and American education. We offer an academically challenging, culturally diverse, welcoming school where everyone is fluent in respect, responsibility and a life-long love of learning. And when our students graduate, they proudly exclaim “Attention monde, j’arrive!”

ore and more parents are choosing to enroll their children in preschool, but choosing the right preschool for your child is key, educators say. “Preschool programs provide the foundation of a child’s educational experience,” says Andrew Slater, head of the lower school for GEMS World Academy-Chicago. “It helps them learn how to learn. How to be a part of a social group, learn what school is, and learn how to manage themselves within a broader

context and community.” Good preschool programs provide kids with the opportunity to explore and get out into the world, he says. GEMS currently has a junior-kindergarten through sixth-grade program, but it is researching expanding services to even younger students. Jenni Sorenson, community resource director at Lincoln Park Preschool and Kindergarten in Chicago, says high-quality preschools equip children with the skills they need to be

invested, life-long learners. “A safe, nurturing preschool will foster curiosity, develop problem-solving skills, empathy, self-confidence, literacy skills and joy in discovery,” Sorenson says. “Armed with these skills, children are prepared to continue to advance their learning and participate in their communities.” She says having a strong sense of community is a central component at her school. “Our Preschool Together and Read, Sing & Play classes serve to bring our curriculum Special Advertising Supplement

to life for children as well as their parents,” she says. “Parent discussion nights, family events and dropping off and picking up from the classroom establish trust and collaboration with our families. Art and literacy partnerships throughout the city are opportunities for LPP to share and strengthen the resources of fellow education programs.” Benjamin Hebebrand, head of school for Quest Academy, says his school has developed a program for 3-year-olds through prekindergarten that addresses the needs of the whole child: social, emotional, creative and intellectual. “Being a school that meets the needs of gifted children, our early childhood curriculum is based on a highly inquisitive approach,” he says. “Designed with the idea of allowing children to grasp basic concepts, our teachers

first emphasize higher-order connections and patterns to foster each child’s curiosity, and secondarily emphasize specific academic skills that strengthen those conceptual understandings.” Karen Palmer, on-site owner of the Goddard School in Hawthorn Woods, says her school has a play-based learning program that relies on a strong collaboration with parents. “Making learning fun is at the core of our program,” Palmer says. “Each day children select activities and materials to explore and discover in an imaginative and creative way. We intentionally guide and extend the children’s play to ensure key developmental milestones are achieved across several learning domains.” The ultimate goal is to raise happy, confident learners, she says. continued on page 22

Lila Jokanovic, directress of the Children’s House classroom at Council Oak Montessori School in Chicago, is head of the classroom that serves 3- to 6-year-olds. She says parents first must identify what they want their child to take away from the preschool experience. “Some parents want their children to be world citizens, leaders and change-makers,” she says. “Other parents are more specific: they want their child to learn how to count to 100 and know their sight words.” As a parent, she says, reflecting on your personal beliefs of education and childhood is important because a parent’s involvement in their child’s preschool is essential for success. Jokanovic says a preschool classroom should be uncluttered, clean and easy to move around.

Parents also should know how discipline is handled and know what types of work the children will be doing. Most important, however, is how a child reacts to the classroom. “Are the children happy and engaged in their work?” she says. Jill Due, director of admission at Catherine Cook School in Chicago, says parents should research the school, determine the student-teacher ratio and visit before deciding where to send their child. Parents also should decide if their child needs a full-day or halfday program. “Visiting a school is the best way for parents to know if it is a fit for their family. Your instincts will let you know if it feels right to you,” she says. “Also, talking to current families of the school and reviewing a school’s website can give one insight into the school community.”

Parents know that Catholic schools provide a safe and sacred space where students can grow to their full potential. At a Catholic school, your child will receive an outstanding academic foundation from people who share your values. Nationally, Catholic school students outperform others on tests for math, reading and science. They also lead in graduation rates, and they're the most likely to go on to college. Each school is its own vibrant community creating a secure and engaging environment for children to become responsible and confident young adults. Play-Based Preschool … Do Kids Just Play All Day? A Farmer’s Market Case Study

By Kevin O’Brien Mary Meyer School, Director

For the farmer’s market, students drank lavender lemonade, and ate pickles and blueberry crumble. They worked to squeeze the lemons, cut the cucumbers and bake the crumble. Their hands got dirty digging and planting. Their anticipation was whetted when tiny plants began to reach toward the sun. Smiles grew wide as young farmers welcomed their parents and sold their farmed goods. This farmer’s market may have been just one day, but the path that led to the market was varied and filled with excitement and learning and purposeful play.

W

hen the grass is green and flowers are blooming in the spring at Mary Meyer School, we celebrate by hosting a farmer’s market. Our purposeful play curriculum has led us to this special day. in early spring and before the trees are budding, our Farmer-in-residence works with our students to discuss worms and seeds and soil and planting. How does play fit into farming and how did we learn? • We read books about farming, worms, fruits and vegetables. • We planted grass in our sensory table which we “mowed” using classroom scissors. • We tilled the soil in our garden and planted seeds. • We watered and watched our crops grow. • We practiced buying and selling using real money. • We hosted parents and sold goods at our Farmer’s Market.

26 Making the grade 2015

MTG2015.indd 26

• We donated the money we raised to a local food pantry. Susan neuman writes in Content-rich instruction in Preschool (2014) “in play, children express and represent their ideas, learn to interact with others, and practice newly acquired abilities and knowledge.” Play is what children love to do…this makes it a natural point of engagement for 3 and 4 year olds.

hese days schools are faced with dozens of options for raising funds. Students can sell candy bars or magazine subscriptions, frozen cookie dough or wrapping paper. But educators say the most successful fundraisers not only raise money, but also help their students learn and serve others. For 36 years, the American Heart Association has helped hundreds of schools raise money while sharing with kids the importance of heart health through its hugely popular Jump Rope for Heart program, says Kelly PosSpecial Advertising Supplement

konka, vice president of the youth market for greater Chicagoland for the American Heart Association. “A history of tradition is a key reason why this fundraiser works,” she says. “It is a cause that touches home with a lot of people and is known in almost every household. When schools start this program, they do it for years.” Not only do students raise money through jumping rope, an educational component is provided for classroom use, she says. “It doesn’t require anything outside of the school day and works right into the physical

education curriculum,” she says. One of the most successful schools with the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser has been Pleasant Ridge in Glenview, which raised $65,262 for Jump Rope for Heart during the 2013-14 school year. It was the fourth-ranked school in the nation out of more than 33,000 schools that participated and number one in Illinois. “Even though there’s a donation tied to it, first and foremost it’s about educating the schools and community on heart health, being continued on page 28 Making the grade 2015 27

physically active, having fun and helping others,” she says. “At Pleasant Ridge, it has become a tradition that has built momentum over the years.” At the Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines, fundraisers are used to introduce concepts including empathy, compassion and kindness as part of the Social Emotional Learning Program, says Carolyn Manley, school counselor for the school. Fundraising programs include a trickor-treat fundraiser for UNICEF, a “Cut for a Cause” fundraiser to support those living with cancer and an Earth Day fundraiser for the World Wildlife Fund, as well as Jump Rope for Heart. “While students learn about themselves and their relationship to the larger community and the world, they are often exposed to issues of concern, such as homelessness, poverty and hunger,” she says. “We encourage students to become passionate about causes and explore ways that they can take action and impact the larger community. Thus, students have been enabled to take ownership over fundraising efforts by creating proposals and leading fund-

raising projects to benefit causes of their choice.” The school also sells gift cards to support the school’s Family School Association. Cathy Morrison, dean of communications at Lake Forest Academy, says a successful relationship within their community is key to raising money for the school. “First and foremost, every gift, from every member of our community in any amount, large or small, matters,” she says. “We frequently hear from alumni who feel LFA changed their lives and they want to give back to show their appreciation and ensure the next generation of students has access to the transformative experience they had.” Donors can give through the annual giving program called the Academy Fund, and the school also has used fundraisers including matching gifts and peer-to-peer fundraising. “For all donors, fundraising is a way of ‘paying it forward,’” she says. Catholic schools are well known for their fundraising, from carnivals to raffle tickets to candy bars, says Lynn Fredrick, advancement consultant for the Office of Catholic Schools, Archdiocese of Chicago. Schools are launching advancement programs to help relieve the fundraising pressure and are holding annual events that remain a family tradition long after their child has left the school. Popular annual events include auctions, dinners, races and even haunted houses. “These programs are a staple for most parish schools in the archdiocese and they are necessary because the tuition that parents pay does not cover the full cost of the education their children receive,” she says. “The resulting gap must be covered by support from the parish, perhaps from outside funding sources, and by fundraising programs.” Special Advertising Supplement

P

ablo Picasso said, “Every child is an artist”. A process-based art experience ensures that every child has the opportunity to express themselves in unrestricted ways. Process based art focuses on the process of creating art rather than the product. LPP Education Director Jamie Tiller writes, “Process art allows children to be free. In a world with so many rules, process art gives children freedom to express their thoughts, ideas and emotions without fear of being right or wrong. It allows them to be true and honest, which brings out brilliant confidence and creativity.”

Creativity focuses on the process of forming original ideas through exploration and discovery. In children, creativity develops from their experiences with the process, rather than concern for the finished product. Creativity is about reasoning, exploring, discovering, and visualizing. For all children, at all ability levels, artistic expression is a central role in cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional development. The arts motivate and engage children in learning, stimulate memory and facilitate understanding, enhance symbolic communication, promote relationships, and provide an avenue for building competence. Young children are naturally creative. Child development specialists note that play is the business of young children; play is the way children promote and enhance their development. Art exploration is a most

natural vehicle for play. Children who feel free to invent, create, and find new ways to do things are willing to take risks and make mistakes. Through arts education, very young children can experience nontraditional modes of learning that develop social, spatial, kinesthetic, and logic abilities, as well as traditional modes of learning that develop mathematical and linguistic abilities. Because children learn in multiple ways, activities should reflect these multiple ways of knowing and doing. (http://www. artsdel.org/ArtsEducation/YoungChildren) Two year old preschool teacher Rachel Heinzman writes, “As a teacher at the end of an art project, instead of 16 identical bats hanging from the ceiling, I have information on students’ thought processes, problem solving ability, development of fine motor skills, and their unique style and preferences.”

NAEYC guidelines for process-focused art experiences: •There are no step-by-step instructions • There is no sample to follow • There is no right or wrong way to explore and create • The art is focused on the experience and on exploration of techniques, tools, and materials • The art is unique and original • The experience is relaxing or calming • The art is entirely the child’s own • The art experience is a child’s choice

raditional subjects like reading, writing and arithmetic will always be important, but educators believe supplementing those with exciting, engaging enrichment programs is also important to student success. At Acacia Academy, students have the opportunity to explore and create projects that enrich the curriculum in a 2.5-acre nature center, says Kathryn Fouks, principal at Acacia Academy and clinical director for The Achievement Centers. They also use their traditional subject skills in more creative ways, such as using math skills Special Advertising Supplement

to design and make their own stringed instrument to play in guitar class or creating educational and recreational games for the other students to play at the Fall Festival. “They learn to think outside the box and problem solve,” she says. “We build creativity and divergent problem-solving activities into our enrichment program because no matter what is taught in the classroom or how many degrees a person may obtain, the minute they step out into the real world, there will be a problem they need to solve and thereby a need to access their own thinking skills.” Fouks says it is important for programs to include divergent, open-ended problem solv-

ing elements. “Our enrichment programs include a multitude of hands-on, experiential learning activities that further develop and utilize the student gifts, problem solving abilities and go significantly beyond the literal interpretations,” she says. “The benefits of these enrichment programs is that they allow the student to go beyond the printed page, further develop their strengths and creative abilities.” Lakefront Children’s Academy offers private piano lessons for students ages 4 and up, and that skill has helped students become continued on page 32 Making the grade 2015 31

successful in every other facet of their academic life, says Cheryl Rogers, founder and owner of the school. “Within the first year, I literally saw a difference in their academic skills, and our graduates went on to elementary school and saw their cognitive level grow twice as much. Piano seems to put them a step ahead,” she says. “It just teaches the brain to work in different ways.” Other important enrichment activities in-

clude physical education, Rogers says. “There needs to be exercise in the classroom, the kids need to have play and movement time,” she says. “We’ve learned, especially for the boys, the movement helps them focus better, hold still better.” Other important enrichment activities include incorporating a foreign language, incorporating regular field trips, and oral lessons are vital as well, she says. “Extra enrichment opportunities help the curriculum and resources go a little further,” she says. “You want them to be able to learn globally and see things outside the classroom.”

At Old Town School of Folk Music, the school’s programs are designed to enrich children’s minds, bodies and learning styles, says Dave Zibell, director of marketing for the school. “All of our programs are developed to help children grow, explore and reach new heights, all while learning how to think independently and work cooperatively,” he says. “Children at Old Town School feel safe to be themselves as they become active learners in our programs’ community-focused and family-oriented atmosphere.” The experts say parents should choose en-

richment activities based on their child’s interests and what kind of learning environment they thrive in. “Parents should remember that it’s important not to force a child into a certain activity. Trying new things can be intimidating and it’s normal for children to feel anxious about starting something new, so always give new things a try,” Zibell says. “Maybe your music-loving child will love creating comics, or maybe your jitterbug child will love sitting down to learn the banjo. (But) be aware that not every experience or art form is good for every child. If your child is resisting, struggling and breaking down a great deal when it comes to learning a certain art form, don’t force it.”

homework: what schools do with it and how you can help Experts weigh in on what works for them and what can work for you

ust one look at your child’s face after school and you know you’re in for a long night struggling with math homework, answering questions about past and present tenses and giving advice about what angle might be most interesting about narwhals. The debate over homework is ever present. Some parents and even teachers believe students get too much; some parents want more. When it comes to some of the best schools in Chicago, some send kids home with no homework while others believe homework has great value to mastering the lessons in the classroom. So we asked schools for their opinions

and how parents might better support their school’s philosophy on homework. homework philosophy Varies “At Chicago Waldorf, our younger students have a vigorous day in school and so we don’t assign homework, allowing time to rest, play and be ready to learn fully again the next day,” says Jason Greenberg, director of marketing and communications at the school. “Time out of school should encourage your child’s growing independence and individualized interests, while supporting their academic growth. Homework should advance a spirit of learning, be student-directed and promote a

balanced schedule,” says Clare Heath, elementary program director at Chiaravalle Montessori in Evanston. “Beacon teachers utilize homework to enhance learning. The purpose is to contextualize and deepen the learning that happens during the school day. We avoid arbitrary assignments and busy work in order to make homework a meaningful intellectual exercise,” says Jeff Bell, head of school at Beacon Academy. “We assign homework strategically to help students learn the importance of time management, organizational skills and content development. value of homework is to encourage student expression, exploration and curiosity,” says Pamela Freese, director of administration at The Children’s School in Berwyn. At the Chicagoland Jewish High School, “Homework is considered extended learning, that is, the application of the day’s lesson to real life contexts. Students become motivated when they perceive they are actively using what they have learned to create something meaningful,” says Bruce Scher, academic dean, and Roger Stein, dean of faculty, at the school located in Deerfield. “Homework allows students to have one-on-one time with the subject matter they are learning in school. It gives parents a chance to see what their kids are learning,” says Annette O’Donnell, art teacher at Roycemore School in Evanston. “We think the purpose of homework should be to provide independent practice of concepts and skills covered in class; teach important life skills of respon-

sibility, time management, and organization; and inform parents of school curriculum, their children’s progress, teachers’ feedback and to guide instruction and future assignments,” says Lisa Moser, director of teaching and learning at the Baker School in Wilmette. “By making learning fun, children are engaged and motivated to complete their homework. Homework also helps to strengthen the home/school connection by getting parents involved in their children’s education,” says Karen Palmer, of The Goddard School in Hawthorn Woods. “Science & Arts Academy teachers provide engaging and purposeful homework that extends upon the day’s lessons in a creative way, so students are motivated to practice their newly acquired skills,” says Mindy Keller, director of admissions and marketing at the Des Plaines school. “Our instructors and parents encourage children to practice continued on page 38

helping your kids Sometimes it might seem easier just to do the kids’ homework yourself. Fight that urge, say educators, because they are learning more than just the lesson in front of them. “Parents need to let their children struggle a little bit with homework,” says Kathy Irvin, director of the Early Childhood Program at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka. “It’s OK to fail at homework. Faith in your child is one thing, resiliency is huge. Allowing your child to make a mistake and not see it as a failure is really important” so that when the big struggles come, they have practice and can handle them. One way to help your kids is by listening to their ideas, says Karla Lanza, mathematics tutor at

GiftedandTalented.com. “Find out what interests them. Find a way to incorporate their interests into their homework so it becomes something fun and engaging.” Another idea comes from Mary Pat Fox, eighth-grade teacher at School of St. Mary in Lake Forest: “Take a few minutes each night to review the lesson of the day, even if nothing is specifically assigned. Note any questions you want to ask in the next class.” Latin School Middle School Director Deb Sampey offers these tips: Plan for the week ahead. At the start of each week, have your child carve out the necessary time for homework each day. There is evidence that breaking homework into chunks, changing the location, etc., is beneficial. Make sure they get enough sleep. (Middle school students need 8-10 hours per night, for example). The research is clear that not only does sleep benefit physical and emotional health, but adequate sleep is critical to learning and memory. Go “old school” on social activities on school nights. Middle school students benefit from a routine that allows them ample time to do their schoolwork, participate in cocurricular programs, relax and get enough sleep during the school week. one more tip “Homework is practice, not a test. Help your child take responsibility for their work. Let their successes and failures be their own,” says Ardith Shea, a fourth-grade teacher, and Principal Janice DiVincenzo at Holy Cross School in Deerfield.
