LEARNING THROUGH PLAY EVERY DAY

DEDICATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WHOLE CHILD Through play, children discover their surroundings – socially, emotionally, cognitively & physically. This is unique for each child at each stage of development. Sonnets Academy teachers celebrate diversity in their classrooms - understanding each child’s distinctive style of play and the cultural and developmental factors that contribute to these differences among children. Our teachers create classroom activities that each student can build upon in their own way – focusing on strengths.

“Our Pre-K class explores science with hands-on experiments that excite our five senses. Asking questions about our experiments furthers our curiosity and exploration to build a positive and exciting attitude toward scientific inquiry.”

Our play-based curriculum concentrates on the process through which children learn. Discovery-based play expands their imagination, encourages their sense of wonder and provides a diverse & comprehensive foundation for cognitive, social, emotional & creative growth that will shape their adolescence and adulthood. Children learn how to navigate their future interpersonal relationships from their social interactions in early childhood. When children play together, they learn to celebrate differences as they cooperate and collaborate - creating empathetic problem solvers. When a child’s play is guided and encouraged by their teacher, the child establishes trust, respect & confidence – essential to a lifelong love of learning.

here’s no doubt that early childhood education is important, and all parents want their children to start their education off on the right foot with a positive first experience at school. While young students are being introduced to the concepts of letters and numbers at preschool, experts say that students are likely learning other lessons that will last a lifetime.

1

HOW TO BE PART OF A GROUP Early childhood educational experiences may be the first time that children are consistently part of a big group. Learning how

Special Advertising Supplement

MTG2016.indd 7

to be part of a group involves acquiring a variety of ways to positively interact with others. “Having children in a group setting is one of the best natural ways to teach them how to be a good person,” says Sarah Cudnik, owner and executive director at Kids Work Chicago. “That includes learning how to contribute to a group, manage feelings, help friends, choose words appropriately, and say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’” “We encourage team building activities to help children learn to negotiate their ideas with their peers,” says Laura Davis, executive director at Sonnets Academy in Chicago.

For instance, in the Pre-K classroom at Sonnets Academy-Lincoln Park, students were tasked with building a car together. They needed to collectively decide who would be responsible for each part, as well as what colors they would use to design their car. “This allowed the children the opportunity to share their ideas, but also understand that their idea may not be chosen. Every child was given a role in this activity, which instilled a sense of pride in the end,” Davis says. Cudnik highlights one other benefit to being part of a group: kids get to learn to have fun together. continued on page 8 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 7

MTG2016.indd 8

HOW TO FORM SECURE ATTACHMENTS WITH OTHERS In addition to being part of the group, children are also learning to interact one-on-one. Doing so successfully means learning to understand verbal and nonverbal signals, says Cassie Martin, director of admissions and community relations at Montessori Academy of Chicago. In addition, the first school experience for some children is the first opportunity to learn to develop ongoing, healthy relationships with individuals outside their family. “We work hard with parents and teachers to make sure everyone is promoting secure attachment, because that establishes a foundation for continued secure attachment with other adults as

our students grow,” Martin says.

3

HOW TO LEARN TO LOVE LEARNING “Progressive education honors the whole child, which translates to emphasizing the child’s role in the learning process. Ultimately, we believe that when children own their learning, especially at a young age, it instills a love of learning and helps them to flourish through their school years and beyond,” says Denise Boswell, director of teaching and learning at Baker Demonstration School in Wilmette. Alejandra Valera, director of advancement at Alcuin Montessori in Oak Park, says enrolling children in a quality early childhood program feeds their curiosity and fuels their desire to understand the world around them. “Children want to learn, they have this beautiful innate need to figure out how things work, why things work and have a spark within them to find out. You are never too young to start learning.” Special Advertising Supplement

12/10/15 2:55 PM

Boswell believes an integral part of progressive education is establishing a learning environment in which children are encouraged and inspired to explore, question, investigate, build, think critically and problemsolve. “For our youngest students, this begins with an early childhood education that is play-based, emergent, and exploratory,” she says. Davis agrees. “Children’s eyes light up with wonder as they explore, investigate, collaborate, and take ownership and pride in their work,” she says.

4

HOW TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE While little ones are learning letters and new words in English, many early childhood programs also give children an opportunity to learn a foreign language. Students at Alcuin Montessori,

for instance, learn Spanish. “Children at this age have a great absorbent mind, and this holds true for languages. Foreign language acquisition comes easily to young children,” Valera says. “Dr. Maria Montessori stressed the importance of children becoming citizens of the world, and what better way to do so than by learning a new language?” There is so very much more that children can learn in preschool, but each child learns in their own unique way. “It’s really important for people to remember that it’s our job to guide and teach our little ones, and that they should not fit a certain mold and learn a certain way and speed,” says Cudnik. “We value the fact that everyone is an individual with unique personalities and not just manage that but celebrate it.”

no exception. Schools now focus on reinforcing good choices and promoting good behavior rather than just spelling out the punitive measure kids face as the result of misbehaving. Lisa Diones, assistant director of teaching and learning of Quest Academy in Palatine,

actively uses positive discipline. “In contrast to the discipline that some parents or adults might have been exposed to growing up, when a child makes a poor choice continued on page 12 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 11

Discipline continued from page 11

they are not given a negative punishment or consequence,” she says. “Instead, we actively help our students learn how to recognize the root of the problem or behavior and then collaboratively work towards creating a plan that facilitates positive change and growth.” Shalini Patel, co-founder and head of school of Inspire Girls Academy in Chicago, stresses that students have choices with natural and logical consequences. Inspire Girls Academy opens its doors this fall and is accepting admission applications now. “The goal of positive discipline is about teaching our girls the ability to problem solve and work together to solve goals, as well as to guide the development of self-control and selfesteem so they can function securely,” she says. The focus at St. James Lutheran School in Chicago is motivating students, particularly those in the early childhood program, to make good choices. “We want our students to recognize and value positive examples of excellence, goodness, kindness, perseverance, etc., when they see it and aspire to demonstrate it themselves,” says Kate Donovan, director of communications and admissions at St. James.

Positive discipline is very much a part of the school’s efforts to instill a love of learning in its students. “If the focus of discipline is on what not to do and what punishments to anticipate, students will neither enjoy learning nor take pride in what they do,” Donovan says. “Instead, they will simply learn the rules painfully well and discover means to work around them.” One benefit of positive discipline that Donovan has seen is additional time for learning, because there is less of a need for time administering punitive action or curbing inappropriate behavior. An increased connection and sense of community is another benefit of positive discipline that is particularly important to Patel. “As an educator, I’ve seen the impact that negative discipline, like sitting alone in the hall or writing out an individual apology letter, has on a child in terms of feeling alienated,” she says. “When the community is involved, discussing why it happened, how to fix it, they address the behavior not just for one child but for all.” Patel says that when students feel a strong sense of community and a connection to both teachers and peers, they are less likely to do

something that hurts that connection. Not all schools have adopted all aspects of positive discipline, but they still focus on good choices and Countryside Montessori School in Northbrook is a prime example. “Our approach to discipline is remarkably simple. If students make good choices, they enjoy the benefits of those good choices. When they make bad choices, and everyone does sometimes, they are held accountable,” says Wendy Calise, head of school at Countryside Montessori School. At Countryside Montessori, students making good choices are given more freedoms, including the ability to determine what they will work on, as well as when and with whom they will work. “If students don’t spend their time well or are disruptive, then their freedom is reduced and more structure is put in place for them,” Calise says. “We see our elementary students wanting to be treated as mature young people,” she says, adding that their approach helps foster that maturity as well as teaches kids that the consequences to poor choices are far less desirable than those that accompany good choices. Teachers getting the behavior they want by using natural positive consequences to reinforce good choices is a win-win approach.

a little fun. But managing the activities can be an overwhelming job for parents, who must also make sure kids have sufficient time for school and homework while also making sure family time doesn’t suffer. Finding the right mix of extracurricular activities, however, can be a tricky balancing act, one that area school administrators have

struggled with both as educators and as parents. We asked them for their advice to parents on finding the right mix. MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS PARTICIPATE IN SOMETHING “Extracurricular activities are a great way continued on page 16 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 15

Extracurricular continued from page 15

for kids to figure out what they are passionate about and what works for them,” says Steven Coberly, interim upper school director at Latin School of Chicago. “Children learn the importance of lifelong skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management. As long as the activities are designed for the appropriate age level, it is important for students in all grades to be involved in something outside of the school day,” says Michelle Bahr, a teacher at St. John’s Lutheran School in Chicago. DON’T LET THEM DO EVERYTHING While kids may want to try everything available, that doesn’t mean that they should. “Children and families are incredibly overscheduled, to the point of being fairly unrealistic,” says Robyn McCloud-Springer, head of school at Chiaravalle Montessori School in Evanston. And Bahr says the first thing that suffers is school work. “For some, they are just tired and then do not always give 100 percent to all areas. Still others begin to lose the passion they once had for something.”

When looking at all the possible activities, parents worry that they might miss a golden opportunity for a developing a child’s skill or interest. Coberly tries to relieve parents of that worry. “Interests and passions develop throughout a lifetime,” he says. “We want to raise kids to be adults who will discover things on their own in the next decades of their lives.” CONSIDER BOTH WHAT’S BEST FOR YOUR KID AND YOUR FAMILY Every family and each individual child is different, so a combination of activities that works for one child may not be ideal for another. “For some families, their children being involved in multiple activities keeps them focused and encouraged to work hard in all areas of their life,” Bahr says. “Important factors for families who have multiple extracurricular activities are parental support and travel distance. For some families, focusing on one activity is the perfect amount to expose that student to something and yet not overwhelm them.” Being realistic about the family schedule, including the activities of other children, is also really important, according to McCloudSpringer. Also remember that family time matters, too, Bahr says. It may be as simple as ordering

a pizza and watching a movie. While it is not necessary for every family every day, families do need to be able to recognize how often they need to “rest” so they can recharge. FREE TIME IS BENEFICIAL Downtime is important because it gives kids time for free play. “Play is important for children’s well-being. It is restorative and necessary for physical and mental health,” McCloud-Springer says. “There is a place for downtime and joy.” Coberly says that seeing how kids use their free time can give parents valuable insight into what their child is truly interested in, which can help determine what activities are a good fit and allow kids to explore and develop passions. “When kids are left to their own devices, what do they like thinking about, talking about, and doing? Those are all signs, and they reveal themselves during unstructured downtime,” he says. Educators agree that it’s worth the effort to find the right mix of activities that afford our kids beneficial experiences but also allows some downtime, for both children and their parents.

omputers are no longer a one-sizefits-all teaching tool, confined to a designated “computer lab” within the school. Instead, schools are finding unique ways to enhance learning — and the ways these state-of-the-art teaching tools are being used are evolving as fast as the technology itself. “Technology is just one of the many tools that our teachers and students incorporate into the learning that goes on here at St. A’s,” says Mary Quish, assistant principal and technology director at St. Athanasius School in Evanston. Special Advertising Supplement

MTG2016.indd 19

At St. Athanasius School, students use technology in a variety of ways, from using a Bible app to engage second-graders in Biblical stories to using PowerPoint and other applications to create science fair projects. Smart Boards are used to reinforce concepts in classrooms, and even in physical education classes, iPhone apps are used to track students’ heart rates and videos are made to critique technique. And those are just a few ways that technology is integrated into the day-to-day activities of the students, Quish says. “When we first created our technology plan years ago, our goal was to create an environment where technology was integrated

seamlessly into the curriculum to enrich our students’ learning experience. … We are certainly well on our way to achieving that goal.” At Fusion Academy, where the student-toteacher ratio is one to one, technology is used to keep track of every student’s individualized learning plan through a personalized learning management system accessible by the students, teachers, parents and the students’ support team. “We are lovers of technology and use it in every class and classroom, but it differs from student to student,” says Lindsey Ciochina, head of school for Fusion Chicago’s downtown continued on page 20 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 19

campus. Fusion has three campuses opening this year for sixththrough 12th-graders. “Everyone has access to laptops, and we have some pretty advanced technology in our science labs. But our learning management system has been completely tailored to how we teach.” In addition to academic goals, Fusion’s technology can track individualized goals, whether they are social, organizational goals, or executive functioning goals. At the end of the day, an email is generated for the parents and the students’ lead teachers. “What I think is so unique is that it allows goal-setting that’s not just academic, but also other elements of the students’ progress and wellness and long-term success,” Ciochina says. “It is essential to have a daily record and have transparent communication between the student, parent and whole

school community. Without this communication process, we would all sink.” At Roycemore School in Evanston, students in the 3-D Ambassadors Club talk with teachers about what they need for their classrooms and then use the 3-D printer to create things for their teachers. One example of this was a thirdgrade teacher who asked the club to create a model of an ear that she could use in a class. The students created a model of all the parts that illustrated how they all fit together, says Elizabeth Shutters, coordinator of educational technology and professional development. “Our vision for technology use is that it’s essential for today’s learning, and our mission for the school is that we want to prepare students for the future and help them meet their needs as learners,” she says. “To us, it’s not about the technology they use, but how they use it. The 3-D Ambassadors Club, for example, teaches students to work collaboratively with their

teachers to find a need and then meet it.” In addition, several teachers are “flipping” their lessons, meaning students watch a video lecture at home and then use class time to do the more traditional “homework.” “When they get to school, they’ve already heard the lesson so at school, they can use their time better by doing projects and asking and answering questions,” she says. “In French class, for example, they can work on pronunciation of new words, or they have the ability to go back and watch lectures over again if they need to. It’s been very helpful for a lot of students.” At Catherine Cook School in Chicago, a 2,000-square-foot former library has become the IDEA Lab (Innovation, Design, Engineering and Art). It is filled with state-of-the-art technology, including 3-D printers, sewing machines, a laser cutter, and an interactive display wall made of 12 HD television sets. There are also traditional shop tools, as well as robotics equipment. “This has really become the hub of another stage of learning,” says JD Pirtle, director of innovation at Catherine Cook. “We start our 3-year-old, pre-literate learners on things like robotics and programming and circuitry. This isn’t just a place for older

students.” For example, 3-year-olds learned how to use iPads to create 3-D models of snowflakes they then printed, becoming a tangible object that was first created in their imagination. Older students were given a crank and bell and told to create a Rube Goldberg device. Fifth-grade math students sew quilts as they study perimeter and area. “This lab is really empowering and shows our students we are all perpetual learners. If we don’t know how to do something, we can figure it out together,” he says. At Resurrection High School in Chicago, the Innovation Lab is a “maker-space” for the students. “It’s a location for students to come in and participate in peer-to-peer learning, where they can try lots of different kinds of technology in a hands-on environment. They can learn through trial and error, and really be creative,” says Joe Lascon, instructional technologist at Resurrection. The tools include 3-D printers, robotics equipment, photo editing and graphic design technologies. “We wanted to make sure we had things that appealed to everyone, and not just students who were tech-savvy already.” The object of the lab is to give the students at the all-girls continued on page 22

school a way to explore all the STEM-related career fields they could consider, says Kathleen Heneghan, the school’s principal. In addition to using the lab as part of their classwork, students also staff the lab, under the supervision of a teacher. “We built this lab to coincide

with our increased STEM offerings, including tech courses like Intro to Computer Science,” Lascon says. “We also have engineering principles, and a robotics club. We have a larger technology goal, but when we talk about technology here, we focus on how technology can help learn and develop skills. We want to move from being consumers of information to creative owners and producers of knowledge.”

How your child learns

Classrooms across the Chicago area embrace brain research

or decades, researchers have studied the brain and how students learn. Out of it came findings educators have implemented into the classroom to help children optimize their potential. At some schools throughout Chicago, modern research is only confirming the way they have been teaching for decades, while at other schools, new research is shaping what they are doing inside the classroom. Marsha Enright, president of the school board at Council Oak Montessori in Chicago, says modern research and studies keep confirming that the philosophies Maria Montessori began using more than a century ago still

prove true today. “Research in neuropsychology and development has been confirming what we do in Montessori. Maria was an absolute genius scientist who was able to observe how children learned and acted and then came up with a program that uses things that modern researchers are still discovering today,” Enright says. Specifically, researchers like neuropsychologist Stephen Hughes and psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi are reinforcing Montessori’s belief in positive psychology and helping students achieve “flow.” Csikszentmihalyi believed that flow-state was one of increased concentration on a task that is so interesting you’re paying attention and working hard and when

you’re done, you have a pleasant tiredness. “This is how our lessons at Montessori function. We give students the materials they need to do the lesson, and they are just hard enough to be interesting and engaging and help them achieve that ‘flow state,’” Enright says. At Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School in Chicago, the staff is incorporating theories they learned at an in-service workshop by Wheatridge Ministries to help increase students’ learning. That workshop taught that “brain breaks” are essential to student learning, and therefore, teachers are regularly leading their students in kinesthetic activities in continued on page 26 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 25

the classroom to help them boost their performance, says Pilgrim Principal Chris Comella. “Especially before we do any testing, teachers will be doing stretching or dancing or some kind of physical activity to get the blood flowing to the brain,” he says. “In other activities, teachers will musically chant things, or make up raps for prayers. Or they get up in math class and sing and dance the math rules, which helps ingrain them on the brain.” They also use things like sign language and “reader’s theater” performances during chapel time to reinforce learning and engage the brain, he says. “Anecdotal evidence shows us that kids are happier and more enthusiastic about learning if it’s fun,” he says. “It’s fun to do raps and chanting and reader’s theater. And in terms of test results, we think their scores spike by at least

a few points because the physical activity helps keep them mentally focused.” The Chicago Grammar School preschool and junior kindergarten program is designed with opportunities for the children’s neuro-development in order to maximize those periods in which the brain responds to certain types of input to create or consolidate neural networks, says Phillip Jackson, executive director of the Chicago Grammar School. Scientists have firmly established — and progressive educators have long recognized — that learning and knowledge in children does not follow as an automatic result from what is taught. Learning is a consequence of their activities, problem solving and environment, that is, their experience, Jackson says. “At Chicago Grammar School, our program is designed to immerse the child in complex interactive experiences that are both rich and relevant to the child. teacher’s role is to identify and plan for the experiences. They assume the responsibility of guiding the problem solving,” he says. “The teacher attentively adjusts the level of assistance and direction in response to the child’s level of performance, thereby either expanding or creating a new mental model to accommodate the experience.” This is reflected in numerous ways throughout the school: through a low student-teacher ratio; a classical education with a broad, integrated curriculum that stresses observation and experience; physical activity on a daily basis; and fields of study that begin in the grammar school stage and returned to in the later schooling years (logic stage). “For example, the familiarity with the ancient world gained by the CGS students in first grade enables them in fifth grade to make connections between their past learning and the new learning. The more connections made, the more likely the students will find sense and meaning in the new information, thereby greatly increasing the retention of their new learning,” he said. Educators at the Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines are working with researchers at the Rush NeuroBehavioral Center to implement a school-based executive function program for teachers and students. They believe executive functions, which are the cognitive processes that occur in the frontal lobe area of the brain, allow us to plan, organize, make decisions, pay attention and regulate behavior. They allow us to solve problems and evaluate the decisions we make. Current research suggests that the development of executive function skills is essential for success both in school and later in life. “While many executive function skills are thought to be acquired naturally, we believe that these skills need to be incorporated into the educational setting, so that they can be learned Special Advertising Supplement

through a planned, intentional approach, which is integrated into the regular school curriculum,” says Dr. Georgia Bozeday, director of Educational Services at Rush NeuroBehavioral Center. The program at Science & Arts Academy focuses on teaching students organizational skills, time management strategies, the ability to assess individual strengths, how to set goals, and the utilization of study skills to optimize a student’s academic and behavioral successes. There are many examples of how this is being implemented in the classroom. For example, students in the lower grades use a specialized daily assignment notebook, while middle school students use the MyHomework iPad app to stay organized, and all students use a color-coded binder system to manage all their homework and paperwork. Students also are taught time management techniques and study strategies as part of the program. They also set individual goals, called SMART Goals, in both academic and personal areas and then create steps to achieve them. “Working one on one with students and teaching them how to develop SMART goals gives them the opportunity to learn how to implement key strategies, so that they can strengthen their focus, develop their flexibility and learn how to plan, organize and prioritize,” says Tina Centineo, a third and fourth grade teacher at Science & Arts. “The program focuses on teaching step-by-step development of executive functions, based on a firm understanding of brain research in this arena, to enhance the acquisition of higher-order thinking skills, in an effort to optimize educational performance,” says Tim Costello, head of school. “Knowing how to develop a study plan reduces anxiety relative to the management of assignments and the student’s work load.

Testing can be stressful for parents and students Some of the best Chicago educators offer advice on testing well By CARRIE RODOVICH

W

hether your children are in public school or private, few words inspire such a visceral reaction in parents as these two: “standardized testing.” But no matter what tests a school administers, there are things parents and students can do to make the process as stress-free as possible. The main thing is to maintain good study habits all year round, says Colleen Cannon, principal at St. Josaphat School in Chicago. “You can’t ramp up for the test,” she says. “At our school, we try to be low-key about testing because it can be so stressful.” Stress levels increase as the grade level does, with testing helping to determine what high school your child might attend. “We tell parents there are high schools for everyone, and the test is only one component of who (the children) are as the student. They are not the test. It’s just a way for us to see, over time, how they are doing,” she says. St. Josaphat now administers the Aspire test online, recently switching from the popular Terra Nova exam. The test, which looks at math, reading, soSpecial Advertising Supplement

cial studies, science and English, is based on the Common Core and is a good way to challenge students and gauge where they are academically. Even though there is no way to perfectly measure a student’s readiness for college through a standardized test, there are things parents can do to help their students get ready for the tests, says Jimmy Kim, co-founder and education consultant with More than Scores and Tests, an education consulting company that helps combine tutoring and college consulting. For example, as your child studies for any tests, help them focus on reflecting their own understanding and misunderstandings, Kim says. That means helping them understand not only what the right answer is, but why it is right. “For example, as they practice solving an English or math problem, focus on why the right answer is the right answer, why they could eliminate other choices, and then focus on what they need to learn so you could make the right answer choices next time,” he said. Also, standardized tests should be used as a checkpoint in seeing where your students are

and where they could further improve, Kim says. A word of advice: “Be sure not to neglect their academics and their activities for the sake of the standardized tests,” he says. “Don’t treat the standardized tests as measuring sticks of your children’s value as students. Instead, treat them more like maintenance checkups with your car mechanic or health checkups with your doctor.” Testing should be used proactively to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses, says Janice DiVincenzo of Holy Cross School in Deerfield. Parents and teachers alike can work together to help students see tests as nonthreatening and non-stressful. “When students know that this is an opportunity to show what they know as well as show what they need, and when they then receive what they need on a consistent basis, test anxiety can be diminished. Approaching all testing as a normal part of life helps students put classroom assessment into perspective,” DiVincenzo says. Bennett Day School in Chicago focuses on hands-on learning, not testing, but its leaders continued on page 30 MAKING THE GRADE 2016 29

Testing continued from page 30

know testing is a fact of life. The best way to prepare for testing is not to practice for taking a test, says Kate Cicchelli, co-founder, principal, and chief academic officer at Bennett Day School in Chicago. “The most important thing is to provide children with opportunities to engage their learning and understanding in novel circumstances. Rote practice of a skill does not improve test scores.” For instance, expose kids to what Cicchelli calls “incidental mathematics” regularly – such as calculating the cost of a can of peas in the grocery store or a tip at a restaurant. She says giving children opportunities to apply what they know in real-world instances not only builds their abilities, but gives them confidence when they encounter something new on a test. “I think we fall into the trap that if you know how to do a thing one way and you practice over and over again, you’ll excel on a test. But the test demands you think of things in new and different ways and we have to give kids that exposure.” Some schools, such as British International

School of Chicago, are trying to move away from traditional forms of standardized testing. The school follows the English National Curriculum and their assessment program, says Mel Curtis, principal of the school. “We don’t believe you have to test children to work out where they are,” Curtis says. “We believe with every opportunity, you assess where they are. So that can be a piece of writing or a mathematics piece.” The school follows the Assessment for Learning process, which says that every learning and teaching task offers assessment opportunities. Some of the key features include being clear about learning goals and how they will be assessed, using effective questioning techniques to provide opportunities to asses knowledge, and showing students that all responses are valued and even errors can be learning opportunities. It also stresses giving constructive feedback and encouraging students to reflect on their learning and monitor their own progress. Teachers should share learning goals and objectives with them in their language, Curtis says, and then support them as they strive to meet those goals. That means talking with children about a piece of work and asking them what they would do differently if they had to

do it again. Or ask them what they could do to move the piece to the next level. “(Standardized) assessments are one test, one day. They don’t help you imbed knowledge,” she says. “You need to make sure the children know how to improve their work. It’s not just learning a test for test-taking sake; you have to make sure they really understand what they’re learning.” Audrey Perrott, head of school at Near North Montessori School in Chicago, says the best thing teachers and parents can help students learn from testing is resilience and problem solving. For instance, rather than being thrown by a question on a test and give up, teachers at Near North teach students to think about parts of the question they do know and tease out the answer. Near North Montessori is participating in the Measuring Skills Assessment, which measures non-cognitive skills such as confidence, creativity and resilience. “Our hope is that these are the tests that ultimately are going to measure the skills that are important for success. Just giving kids knowledge and see if they can give it back is what we can find in Google. It’s really what can you do with that knowledge that’s so important,” Perrott says.

Play-Based Preschool … Do Kids Just Play All Day? A Farmer’s Market Case Study

By KEVIN O’BRIEN Mary Meyer School, Director

For the farmer’s market, students drank lavender lemonade, and ate pickles and blueberry crumble. They worked to squeeze the lemons, cut the cucumbers and bake the crumble. Their hands got dirty digging and planting. Their anticipation was whetted when tiny plants began to reach toward the sun. Smiles grew wide as young farmers welcomed their parents and sold their farmed goods. This farmer’s market may have been just one day, but the path that led to the market was varied and filled with excitement and learning and purposeful play.

W

hen the grass is green and flowers are blooming in the spring at Mary Meyer School, we celebrate by hosting a farmer’s market. Our purposeful play curriculum has led us to this special day. In early spring and before the trees are budding, our Farmer-in-Residence works with our students to discuss worms and seeds and soil and planting. How does play fit into farming and how did we learn? • We read books about farming, worms, fruits and vegetables. • We planted grass in our sensory table which we “mowed” using classroom scissors. • We tilled the soil in our garden and planted seeds. • We watered and watched our crops grow. • We practiced buying and selling using real money. • We hosted parents and sold goods at our Farmer’s Market.

• We donated the money we raised to a local food pantry. Susan Neuman writes in Content-Rich Instruction in Preschool (2014) “In play, children express and represent their ideas, learn to interact with others, and practice newly acquired abilities and knowledge.” Play is what children love to do…this makes it a natural point of engagement for 3 and 4 year olds.

But we also spend our time educating the whole child in mind, heart and spirit. Our schools are caring communities where children get one-on-one attention and a strong sense of right and wrong. We provide many things that other schools don’t or can’t. We invite you to take some time and visit some of our schools to see what we believe is important. We believe it’s about finding a school filled with quality faculty who bring a commitment to academic excellence, an atmosphere that ignites a love of learning and a community that is welcoming and supportive.
