eachers recognize that each child in their class learns in their own unique way and the challenge is finding a way to reach each one while not ignoring another. We reached out to some of the best from around Chicagoland to see how their schools embrace the most current research to ensure that they are using best practices to help each student learn. be like it was when they were students. “What we’ve learned about the young brain in the past 20 years is amazing and has flipped the experience,” says Meg Fitzgerald, early childhood director at Bennett Day School in Chicago. “Good teaching is about learning processes, not just fact based learning. And we know that real world experiences are more beneficial than worksheets, because what’s personal to kids is what gets ingrained.” For early childhood students at Bennett, that can mean a trip to the park to examine worms or a science project to

determine the best way to make orange juice after a student inquired about it. MAKE THE MOST OF THE MIND BODY CONNECTION Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst has implemented active learning. “Tons of research shows everyone learns through movement. Moving increases comprehension,” explains teacher Laura Bedore. Students use purposeful movement with programs like GoNoodle and Adventure to Fitness to both develop continued on page 8 MAKING THE GRADE 2017 7

Success continued from page 7

memory and fluency and have two action based breaks during the day. Bedore kicks it old school by teaching her kids different dances during those breaks. “I’ve gone retro. We do the Hustle,” she says. Classrooms at Immaculate Conception also have nontraditional seating options including yoga balls and even pedal bikes. “There’s a lot of kids who just naturally have bounds of energy, and giving them the opportunity to move allows them to feel more comfortable and confident in the classroom,” Bedore says. EMPHASIZING THE STUDENT TEACHER RELATIONSHIP The student teacher relationship can make a big difference in both how and how much a student learns. Rocco Gargiulo, assistant principal and math teacher at Woodlands Academy in Lake Forest, says that fostering the relationship can allow a teacher to determine how each child learns best. When students realize that teachers really do want to help them and are not scary, students more likely to self advocate. The all girls school matches students with a faculty mentor as part of their advisory program and allows time for one on one meetings with humanities teachers so that teachers can provide specific feedback to each student. Faculty members also get to know students outside of class, which gives them an understanding of that child and the ability to relate the subject matter back to something they know that student is interested in, be it a specific sport, book they’re reading or the arts. “We are able to engage them 8 MAKING THE GRADE 2017

MTG2017.indd 8

and it makes students feel safe, comfortable and well known, which helps them become better students in our classes,” Gargiulo says. OFFERING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES The arts are integrated throughout the curriculum in both big and small ways at Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts in Chicago, which Principal Casimer Badynee says helps kids of all learning styles reach their full potential. “There is not one successful type of kid here,” Badynee says. “Kids connect with art in different ways and we look at multiple data points, which can be a test or it can be a performance on stage, a work of art or a composition.” One key to helping kids learn best is to offer learning opportunities at every turn, which happens in a very literal sense at Alphonsus, Special Advertising Supplement

where student work lines the halls and is visible throughout the school. “The classroom is not the only sanctuary for learning. Even when kids are moving from one room to another, they are surrounded by the arts and that’s a chance for kids to engage and understand.”

CONTINUALLY EVOLVE Julia Kelly, principal of Queen of Angels Elementary School in Chicago, stresses that schools need to be continually evolving. “You have to stay current with educational trends. Our staff is motivated to research new teaching models, and there are different instructional methods going on in our classrooms,” she says. Parents can support teachers by being involved and aware of what is going on in the classroom. “Put trust and faith in the teachers that they are looking out for the best interest of their child and doing all they can to help them learn.”

Family: Husband Ryan, kids Gabe, 6th grader, Theo, 2nd grader, and Joey, 3 Hometown: Chicago School: Sacred Heart School, Chicago WHY A PRIVATE SCHOOL WORKS FOR US: While it may seem overwhelming at first to research elementary schools while your child is only 2 or 3 years old, Ryan and I saw this process as an opportunity. We researched great public school options and many wonderful private schools. We were looking for a school with strong academics, of course. We were also interested in joining a community where our children’s moral and spiritual development would be addressed as well. Sacred Heart was a perfect fit for our family. The school has a stellar

academic reputation and a particularly robust middle school program. The class sizes are very small and

students receive language, art, music and physical education in regular rotation. They have access to free before and after school care, as well as a diverse set of afterschool and sports offerings. We love that students come from all over the city (thanks to a large bus program servicing a variety of neighborhoods), so our kids meet friends from all over. Most of all, Sacred Heart works for us because we feel that the school has a very

strong sense of community and is truly a partner to us in developing our sons’ sense of morality and what it means to be a good friend, family member and neighbor. OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: Take the time to talk to anyone you can at the schools you are researching. I can’t tell you how many phone chats or coffees I had with friends or random people that friends referred me to in order to get a sense of the community and opportunities offered by each school. Go to the schools, attend the tours, talk to parents, and ask questions! If you are willing to embark on this process and really think about what is important to your family, you have a chance to make a very tailored choice to what fits with your specific family. That is pretty amazing!

Celebrating 140 years in Chicago and 200 years around the world Sacred Heart is an independent school, K— 8, rooted in the Catholic tradition. Inspired teaching, personalized learning, and a supportive community combine to ensure our students thrive academically and grow in goodness, self-knowledge, and service to others. Educating the whole child

What you can learn from techniques some Chicago schools are using By Shannan Younger

S

tudents learn so much more than reading and math in school; they are developing a wide variety of abilities, including social emotional skills, physical abilities, curiosity and self worth. Here are a few ways that Chicagoland schools have incorporated educating the whole child into their curriculum. FOSTERING IMAGINATION AND INNOVATION Area schools have very much taken to heart the Margaret Mead quote that “children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” That often includes thinking outside the box and being both imaginative and innovative. “It’s important in Waldorf education 12 MAKING THE GRADE 2017

MTG2017.indd 12

that children get to exercise their imagination. … We do that by giving kids strong academic education in a wide variety of subjects and also a lot of opportunities to develop artistically. The idea is that every time a child has an artistic experience, it gives them the opportunity to exercise their own imaginations and also develop resilience and courage that you need in life,” says Carol Triggiano, an eighth grade class teacher at the Chicago Waldorf School. Using imagination and trying out new ideas are key to the focus on innovation at Quest Academy in Palatine. “The technology students will be using when they graduate high school or college does not exist today, so we need to teach kids to be creative and to innovate,” explains Khalek Kirkland, head of school.

FOCUS ON SPIRITUALITY For religious schools, educating the whole child includes exploring students’ faith. “As a faith based school, we can tap into the students’ spiritual lives, not in the sense that we are training them to be little Lutherans, but we are asking them to think about issues over and beyond what is in the textbook,” explains Chris Comella, principal at Pilgrim Lutheran School in Chicago. The religious education program at Pilgrim includes chapel buddies as well as a service component. Comella says the service opportunities not only allow kids to contribute to their community, it opens up discussion and questions in the classroom. Similarly, the Chicago Jewish Day Special Advertising Supplement

12/16/16 2:00 PM

School includes spirituality in its effort to help students grow as a person. “Being a Jewish school, the spiritual part is an integrated part of teaching the whole child,” says Jill Kushnir LeVee, assistant head of school.

PHOTO COURTESY OF CHICAGO JEWISH DAY SCHOOL

DEVELOPING SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS The foundation for success in the real world starts very early on, and teaching “soft skills” sets the stage for even the youngest students to function well both in the classroom and the world outside of school. “The research is strong that if there is a focus on social emotional learning, the academic gains are great, too,” says Kushnir LeVee. Kathryn Barnaby, executive director of Kidwatch Plus in Chicago, says for anyone to succeed, we need to learn to get along with others. “Kidwatch’s classrooms teach rules such as waiting patiently, taking turns, and sharing while encouraging them to make friends and settling conflicts peacefully,” she says.

Chicago Jewish Day School holds morning meetings in each classroom to provide opportunities to develop social emotional skills. “While the meetings look different depending on grade level, they are a time for teachers to gather with students to work on skills like greeting each other, listening and asking

questions.” At Quest, lunch time is an opportunity to build social skills. Students are given cards of different colors and sit with people with the same color card. Kirkland says this is a gentle way of pushing students outside of their comfort zone and building the skills they will need to work with diverse groups of people at school and in the workplace. Educators agreed that educating the whole child doesn’t happen just in the classroom and that it often requires a collaborative effort between home and school. The goal of integrating these components into the school day is to help children emerge with a full battery of skills that will help them succeed in all areas. As Comella says, “When kids leave our school, they have both a great academic education and this whole view of the community and the world in which they live that they wouldn’t have gotten if we focused only on reading and math scores.”

Family: Husband Salvador Hernandez, kids Ixchel, 11, Xoaquin, 9, Quetzaly, 5, and Itzayana, 2 Hometown: Chicago School: Francis Xavier Warde WHY A PRIVATE SCHOOL WORKS FOR US: When we started our search for kindergarten for our daughter 8 years ago, we were overwhelmed with the complexity of the admissions process of the public schools. Rather than trying to deal with the selective enrollment process or public school lottery system, we decided to look into the private schools instead. We heard about FXW through friends and learned about the school’s mission, which was aligned with our goals. We love the school’s mission of providing education to students of all faiths, ethnicities and economic backgrounds. At FXW, our children have the opportunity to not only learn about their Catholic religion but (learn) about other faith traditions as well. We wanted our kids to be in an environment that not only nurtures them but also teaches them to respect and help others. At FXW, families, students, and faculty perform service projects throughout

the city. Children have the opportunity to attend FXW regardless of their socio-economic status. The school awards need-based scholarships through the help of many organizations, sponsors and fundraiser events. In a private school, parents also have a greater opportunity to become more involved in their child’s education and school. FXW is a close knit community where families get to know each other and work together to accomplish the same goal of creating a safe environment for our children and creating friendships for lifetime. One of the main reasons we selected a private school like FXW was that our children will be challenged academically. The classroom sizes at FXW are smaller, which leads to more one on one attention from the teachers and the children have a better chance of academic success. OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: We advise families to do their research and make a list of schools. Attend open houses, look at the school’s mission; understand your child’s needs and economic status. Talk to families that have children in the public and private schools. Homework 101

What parents need to know about making the most of homework By Shannan Younger

Kids are known for dreading having to do their homework, and more and more, parents are making their dislike of homework known, too. We asked some Chicago area educators for their take on what parents need to know about homework and how to help their kids get the maximum benefit from it.

1

SEE IT AS A WINDOW INTO YOUR CHILD’S WORLD Homework is not intended to be punishment. In fact, schools view it as a helpful tool for parents to gain insight into what goes on during the school day. “We view homework as a way for parents to feel connected to their child’s learning and what is going on in their school life. Our goal is not that 16 MAKING THE GRADE 2017

MTG2017.indd 16

parents would reteach lessons and concepts, but allow their child to show them what they have learned and are accomplishing,” explains Sarah Lofsness, assistant principal and kindergarten teacher at St. John Lutheran School in Libertyville. TO BE POSITIVE 2 TRYChildren quickly pick up on the

messages they get from their parents — about homework and everything else in life. “Watch your body language,” advises Annie Melville, lower school principal at Morgan Park Academy in Chicago, who notes that this is something she’s worked on as a parent. As a teacher, though she says, “You really can tell the kids whose parents hate homework.” A positive attitude from the parent

will carry over to the child. If one or both of you is feeling stressed, the educators support taking short breaks. HOMEWORK IS FOR THE KIDS, 3 NOT PARENTS

Being aware of homework is good and even important, but the experts all agreed that parents should not complete the homework for their children. “Our philosophy is that homework is for the students to do because it reinforces what was taught in the classroom. They should be able to do it on their own,” says Jeanine Rocchi, principal at St. Celestine Catholic School in Elmwood Park. That doesn’t mean homework will always be easy, but then again, learning can be challenging. “Part of the process of learning involves a bit of struggle, Special Advertising Supplement

12/13/16 5:57 PM

but sometimes the children say, ‘This is so hard, I can’t do it,’” adds Rocchi. If children are stuck, she suggests parents give them enough help to get them back on track and then allow them to complete the assignment on their own. She’s also in favor of parents reviewing assignments once kids have finished them. When students do master a challenging concept with minimal help, they feel successful. “When they get through the struggle, they gain that inner self confidence of knowing they can do it,” Rocchi says. COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4 TEACHER IS KEY

Parents should not shy away from talking with teachers about homework. “It’s very important for parents to communicate with teachers so they can work together to be successful. It also helps clarify misconceptions on both ends,” says Rocchi. Melville encourages parents to reach out to teachers when the homework is overwhelming a child, noting that teachers want and need to know when a child is having a difficult time.

HOW TO HANDLE THOSE VERY 5 BUSY NIGHTS WHEN NOT ALL THE HOMEWORK GETS

COMPLETED Every family has one of those nights occasionally when things go off the rails due to unforeseen events. Chances are your child’s teacher has seen it before. “We want our students to develop healthy work habits and learn responsibility to prepare them for their future. Having said that, we know that there are exceptions with everything and an evening may not go at all as planned,” Lofsness says. “Communication with the teacher is key and our faculty communicates every day with our parents and will work to help find a solution.” Melville agrees, noting that if it’s late and kids are just trying to cram homework in, odds are they won’t retain much of the information. In addition to letting the teacher know what’s going on, she suggests parents also offer a date they can expect the work completed. OPTING OUT OF HOMEWORK 6ISN’T OK Some parents are saying no to

homework, but that can be a slippery slope, Melville says. “You don’t want kids to think that obligations are optional,” she says. She also notes that in a worst case scenario, opting out can send a message that disregarding authority is OK. Even if it isn’t taken to that extent, it can confuse the child. “If you’re saying mom and dad trump the teacher, then the kids aren’t sure where they stand when they’re in the classroom. It gets really tricky.” Instead of opting out, talk with the school and teacher about their approach to homework. Melville says teachers at Morgan Park are reevaluating how they handle homework, noting that research does not show a strong connection between heavy homework loads and student achievement. She says just as they differentiate instruction in the classroom, homework should be differentiated, too. “What’s 10 minutes for one student may not be 10 minutes for another,” she explains. Taking a personalized approach can help find the right amount of homework that is beneficial but not overwhelming to all students and families.

Family: Husband Erich, kids Leir, 8, and Pela, 4; family dog Marigold and Midnight the hamster Hometown: Chicago School: Science & Arts Academy WHY A PRIVATE SCHOOL WORKS FOR US: We looked into private school options when we learned that public school was not working well for our family. Our son attended a highly regarded, selective enrollment school for kindergarten and first grade. It became very apparent early on that he was not in an environment that provided differentiation and allowed him to progress at a more rapid pace. By the middle of first grade, our son was having serious difficulties slowing down. He was exhibiting signs of anxiety

and began losing the love of learning. Knowing we had to find a better fit for him, we sought advice from a school consultant. He suggested we specifically look at gifted schools because they offer differentiated instruction and teach to the top, whereas public schools teach to the bottom and conventional private schools teach to the middle. After a long journey, we found Science & Arts

Academy and we are incredibly happy to say it is a perfect fit. The school offers a strong curriculum, teaching methods that focus on gifted education, differentiated instruction in every subject, and accelerated learning that is built into each classroom. Not only did we find a school that taught our children (our 4-year old attends too) about social and emotional learning, kindness, and inclusivity, but we also benefit from

Personal, engaged education – for 100 years.

classrooms focused on team work, profoundly talented teachers, a visionary head of school, an atmosphere geared toward nurturing every child, and an absolutely phenomenal drama, fine art, and music program. Everyday our children participate in a culture of motivation, achievement, and excellence. Both of our children are so excited about going to school because their curiosities are met and inspired each and every day. OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: When looking into schools, first identify your child’s specific needs and then look for a school that can meet those needs. When you find a school that is potentially a good fit, ask to speak to other parents and have your child meet students from his or her grade before making a final decision.

Technology advances streamline kids’ learning experiences Digital natives require different teaching methods

By Carrie Rodovich

Technology has come a long way since Jennifer Garetto joined the staff of Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove 13 years ago. “When I started … we had a Palm Pilot program,” she says. “We’ve seen how technology changes, and those are long gone. We keep evolving into better programming and better equipment, from eighth grade on down.” The school, where she is a middle school teacher, has a 1:1 program, so each student has his or her own tablet. “We call it a classroom without limits, 20 MAKING THE GRADE 2017

so you can do things at home or at school. Learning doesn’t have to stop when they leave the classroom,” she says. “Teaching has changed, because they are digital natives and we no longer have to teach them the technology. If you look around our school, the way teaching and learning has really changed.” That natural familiarity with technology allows teachers flexibility in what they teach and how they teach it, and it allows them to use new, innovative programs to enhance learning. One such program used at Avery Coonley is the FUSE program, created by the

School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. The program challenges students with STEAM projects — each project builds on the prior project, so students have to work through and “level up” to get to the more advanced, “cooler,” challenges. “Kids can take on different challenges like design a dream house, 3 D print something or design a roller coaster,” she says. “It doesn’t mean they’re doing it all on the computer, but it’s all housed there. The kids absolutely love it, and it’s well aligned with their thinking style.” Carolyn Wilson, director of education for Alt School in Chicago, says the Special Advertising Supplement

school uses technology to help teachers do their jobs better. It also has developed a unique system to enhance student learning and keep parents informed about what they are learning and how they are learning it. The school system, which will open a Chicago campus in September 2017, goes from preschool through eighth grade and features small, multi age classrooms. The Chicago location will be the 10th school nationally, Wilson says. “Our screen time is for our teachers to make learning more effective and efficient,” she says. That way teachers can spend more time with individual students or small groups of students, helping them meet their individualized goals. The learner Portrait allows teachers to create a complete picture of who

PHOTO COURTESY OF AVERY COONLEY SCHOOL

that child is, what that child is experiencing and how he or she is progressing. It also allows teachers to log what their interests are, what “habits” they have and the ways they think and interact. “In our Portrait, we can see where children are in their journey towards competency, and also see

where they are in developing habits like resilience, collaboration, creativity and ethical thinking,” she says. “It’s a seamless way to allow educators to know the child and plan for learning that’s right for them, and they continually add to the portrait so it continues to grow.” While the Portrait of the

child shows teachers where students are now, students and teachers work together on Milestone program, which creates learning experiences, called “playlists,” that monitor where the student is currently, and what milestone they are focusing on meeting. “It’s a seamless way of understanding who they are, create a learning experience for them that’s just at the right level of challenge, and assessing their progress. It’s a seamless work flow,” she says. Parents also have digital access to things curated for them either at the school level, the class level or the individual level. “It’s a snapshot that becomes a piece of a mosaic that you build on in a systematic way that we understand the student more deeply,” she says.

Hometown: Chicago School: Northside Catholic Academy WHY A PRIVATE SCHOOL WORKS FOR US: I grew up going to a Catholic school and have known and lived that my entire life. The religious aspect of a school is very important to us; we wanted to raise our three boys Catholic, so we love the religion that’s part of the everyday life and instruction. It is a very respectful school. If you walk down the hall, you hear please and thank you and everyone is polite. We love the atmosphere at the school. a wonderful feel to it. I loved the curriculum; the kids have thrived and been there since preschool. There is a wonderful community feeling and everyone is invested in the school. The fact that it’s a neighborhood school, the community is invested in the school — it does take a village, whether you’re carpooling to sports, or other activities, you really do rely on each other and you know each other so well. OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: Go check out all of the schools you’re considering in person and make sure you’re comfortable with the curriculum and the atmosphere. Community is key, and that’s an intangible quality. We feel very fortunate we found the right school for our family.

The pros of choosing a private school for early education How to get your child off to the best start

By Carrie Rodovich

E

veryone agrees that early education is important to getting a child’s future off to a good start, and choosing private education for your child comes with a few extra “pros,” local educators says. Whether it’s small class size, a nurturing family environment or the ability for teachers to foster the love of learning, many families choose private school as a way to enhance the learning of their littlest family members. Here are some pros from educators from around the Chicagoland area: 24 MAKING THE GRADE 2017

MTG2017.indd 24

• One positive aspect of having your child in a private early education facility is that teachers are free to focus on a child’s social emotional development, not just their academic growth, says Sarah Cudnik, owner/executive director of Kids’ Work Chicago. Social emotional development is equally important, if not more so, to meeting academic standards at an early age, she says. In addition to helping a child grow socially and emotionally, teachers have the freedom to create an individualized plan for supporting the growth of the whole child, including his or her educational advancement.

• Private education in the early years lets educators create a warm, nurturing environment in which students can grow and thrive, says Heidi Cooper, director of early childhood education at Temple Sholom of Chicago. While public school focuses on standards, private education can flourish by offering things like play based learning and fostering a warm, family atmosphere. “The feedback we get is that the Jewish preschool is a warm, nurturing environment. Our teachers love children, and our parents love that we include things like celebrating the Jewish holidays and songs. There Special Advertising Supplement

what our children PHOTO COURTESY OF BRIGHT HORIZONS FAMILY SOLUTIONS

is really a warm, loving, nurturing environment,” she says. • A significant benefit to parents who choose to send their children to a private school is ratio of students to teachers, says Kevin O’Brien, director of Mary Meyer School in Chicago. “At Mary Meyer School, we have three full time teachers and a part time studio

artist with a typical class size of 18 students. That means at any given time there are six students for each teacher,” he says. The recommendations from the National Association for the Education of Young Children is a 9:1 ratio. This allows students to develop their social emotional and critical cognitive skills, he says.

ACHIEVE At Alphonsus Academy & Center for the Arts, we inspire and enable our children to reach their full potential by providing a rigorous education combining academic excellence, an arts-integrated curriculum and a strong Catholic foundation.

• One of the benefits of private early education is the small class size, says Phillip Jackson, head of school for Chicago Grammar School. “One of the most precious benefits of private early education at the Chicago Grammar School is the ability for children to develop their mindset about school, learning and exploring in a small classroom with thoughtful teachers,” he says. Having a small number of children to work with, the teacher can develop a deeper relationship with each child, he says. “The teacher has the time to listen, question and encourage them in a way that shows the child that what he or she thinks truly matters. … Children who really believe that their teachers care personally about them will let themselves be pushed to the challenge. They are more willing to re think, re draw, re write. I have seen too many children educated in the “herd” who end up thinking school is about

memorizing study guides and taking tests.” • A private school can nurture the enthusiasm of young learners and expand on and refine the things they learned in their toddler years, says Linda C. Whitehead, senior advisor for education and development for Bright Horizons Family Solutions, which offers child care, preschool and early education in Oak Brook and Chicago. “A strong preschool curriculum will guide children as they develop school readiness…. Programs that are filled with opportunities for investigation, experimentation and discovery, have purposefully designed environments and offer meaningful learning experiences will help children reach their greatest potential,” she says. “Look for (schools) that teach beginning reading and writing skills, math and science concepts, offer opportunities to develop large and small muscles, and guide social and emotional development.” Special Advertising Supplement

Family: Husband Larry, kids Kiley, 12, Lauren, 10, and Will, 7 Hometown: Chicago School: St. Benedict Preparatory WHY A PRIVATE SCHOOL WORKS FOR US: We moved to our neighborhood 10 years ago. We chose our home because of its proximity to both strong public and private school options. As we toured the schools and spoke to other families, we quickly got a sense that a school is more than the building or curriculum — it represents an entire community. Quite frankly, school-aged children will typically spend most of their non-sleeping time at school, so it is critical to find a school community that can offer exceptional educational value and also mirrors the same values and beliefs you have within your home. We selected St. Benedict Prep because of the school’s high academic rigor, committed faculty, small class size and its strong faith-based,

community-focused mission. Because St. Benedict Prep is a part of a parish church, my children know they are part of a larger Chicago faith community with great service and social justice learning opportunities every day of the week. While we acknowledge it is an additional financial burden to our family to select a private school, we believe a faith-based education leads to greater development of their faith, wisdom and spirit. St. Benedict Prep has become an extension of our home. We are invested in our school and community, actively volunteering our time to help drive the school’s vision and community outreach, and in return St. Benedict Prep provides an incredibly personalized and values driven environment for our children to grow and thrive. OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: A school should be an extension of your home and your family values — find a school that encourages family engagement. Special Advertising Supplement

My oldest

OUR BEST ADVICE TO OTHER PARENTS: I would say trust how you feel and trust your kids’ reaction/impression when you visit schools for your family. Not every school is a fit for every student, and it is important that the one you choose really is a match for your family’s wants, desires, and culture. After visiting GEMS, all three of my kids were excited to go there. That was not a small matter, as they were moving from Maryland, leaving all of their friends, and relocating to Chicago.

Do you love your school? In Catholic schools, we do a great job teaching things like reading, writing, science, and math. But we also spend our time educating the whole child in mind, heart and spirit. Our schools are caring communities where children get one-on-one attention and a strong sense of right and wrong. We provide many things that other schools don’t or can’t. We invite you to take some time and visit some of our schools to see what we believe is important. We believe it’s about finding a school filled with quality faculty who bring a commitment to academic excellence, an atmosphere that ignites a love of learning and a community that is welcoming and supportive. HO W W E P L AY E D : We read books, observed, explored and talked about color and what happens when it is mixed; plain old “green” became “frog green” and “pea green”. Each child took turns with our Resident Artist to choose and mix their own paint and name their color.

A gorgeous array of paints created by children who have gained an understanding of color theory. Students’ language skills developed and their vocabulary expanded. Skills of independence and self-confidence are fostered as children learn to do things for themselves.
