Your ProblemsContents May be Varicose Veins!
Take 2 minutes to answer a few questions, it may improve the quality of your health Check all boxes that apply to you ! Do you have leg heaviness or ache? Do your legs burn, tingle or itch? Do you have swelling in your legs or ankles? Do you have skin discoloration on your legs or ankles (Blue/Brown)? Is the skin on your legs red and dry? Do you experience cramps in your legs, especially at nights? Do you have non-healing wounds in your ankle areas? Do you have spider veins on your legs and/or ankles? Do the veins in your legs appear very dark blue or purple? Is the pain in your legs worse after sitting or standing a long period of time? Did you any of your parents or grandparents have varicose veins? Do you have restless legs? If you have checked one or more of the boxes, please do yourself a favor and call USA Vein Clinics.
Do Not Postpone Treatment Varicose veins can start out as a seemingly small problem, but left untreated, can become much more serious. Complications of varicose veins may include ulcers. These may form on the skin near the affected veins, particularly near the ankles. They are caused by fluid buildup in the dysfunctional veins, and can be extremely painful. Dysfunctional veins can also increase the risk of blood clots. Patients may experience a swelling in the leg, which may indicate a blood clot. Left untreated, these clots can travel through the bloodstream and lodge near the heart or lungs, causing potentially lifethreatening health problems.
If you have already decided you'd like to receive vein treatments or would like to get a diagnosis, simply schedule an appointment with USA Vein Clinics today 4 by calling 847-737-5514 - www.usaveinclinics.com NORTHSHORESENIORSGUIDE.COM

know about this company. It’s a company
Alzheimer’s and other dementias. “Why are you so impressed,” you may ask? “Why are you endorsing this company?” I’m not doing it just because it provides high quality care. I’m endorsing it because it provides exceptional care to people with dementia. It’s very simple. Senior Helpers is the only in-home care company I’ve ever heard about that provides truly extensive training to its caregivers on how to interact, communicate and engage with people who have dementia. Other companies may do this, but Senior Helpers has turned it in to a specialty. The thing that impresses me most is that a few years ago Peter Ross, CEO/co-founder and President of the Home Care Association of America, took the initiative to spend the time and money to form a partnership with Teepa Snow, nationally renowned dementia care specialist, to devise specialized training for his employees. Ross didn’t have to do that. His company was already flourishing. As I stated in a recent article I published here about Snow, she is an occupational therapist with more than 30 years of clinical experience in the field of geriatrics and dementia care.
From the Alzheimer's Reading Room
Senior Helpers An In-Home Care Company That Really Cares
Snow consulted with Senior Helpers in developing “Senior Gems,” a system that classifies dementia patients, each named after a gem. “This system is a simple stepby-step format caregivers can easily understand and implement.”The “Gems” table shows the basic characteristics of people at each level and provides tips for interacting with them.
"Too many people focus on what people with dementia can’t do. It’s almost like putting them in prison. We turn that around and turn can’t into can. We focus on what the person with Alzheimer’s still can do". By Marie Marley
I’ll be honest about this right up front. This is going to be an article promoting a business –Senior Helpers. I’m writing this because I believe it’s critical for every family looking for an in-home caregiver to
!
Each new Senior Helpers employee attends a one-day training class that includes watching a DVD by Snow, discussion and role play. Topics covered include 1) normal aging vs. dementia 2) how dementia affects the brain 3) an introduction to the Gems system 4) techniques for success 5) creating a positive environment, and 6) meaningful activities and how to integrate them into day-to-day life. As part of this program caregivers experiencing difficulty with a client are able to consult with a dementia care expert to talk through the problem and

arrive at a solution. In my previous article about Snow I gave a couple of examples from the “Senior Gems” table. I’m going to put another one here because it illustrates the depth of training undergone by Senior Helper’s caregivers. Emeralds are most comfortable when doing familiar tasks. They like to engage, help others, and want to feel like they have a purpose. They get lost in past life, past places, past roles. They get emotional quickly and lose important things and think someone stole them. Bring them things that they love – photos, clothing items, music. Don’t set them up for failure. Engage in activity during their most rested time. “Too many people focus on what people with dementia can’t do,” says Ross. It’s almost like putting them in prison. We turn that around and turn can’t into can. We focus on what the person with Alzheimer’s still can do.” Senior Helpers, creates customized care plans for each client. “We create a positive environment for every client,” says Ross. “This makes the lives of the caregiver and the client more enjoyable.” In addition to providing in-home care, Senior Helpers assists clients in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and continuing care retirement communities. Ross states. If you’re planning to hire an in-home caregiver, check first to see if there is a Senior Helpers near you. You won’t regret it. Home Care Assistance has the industry’s most qualified caregivers While home care is the oldest form of health care (think house calls before the advent of our modern hospital system), it was very limited in its scope until approximately two decades ago. Before then, home care was exclusively an interim solution or a short-term service for older adults recovering from hospitalization. Today, home care can serve as a comprehensive alternative to an institutional setting like a nursing home or assisted living facility. Studies show that nine out of ten older adults would rather remain in their own home if they can. Current research says a brain-healthy diet encourages good blood flow to the brain, is low in fat and cholesterol and includes foods rich in anti-oxidants. Like the heart, the brain needs the right balance of nutrients to function well. To be most effective, a brain-healthy diet should be combined with physical and mental activity and social interaction.

You are what you eat. Not new, but an idea that has taken on new significance as Americans live longer. Most people understand the importance of maintaining physical fitness to keep the body running well as they age, but don’t always realize that maintaining the brain is equally important. Changes in the brain can begin as early as two decades before symptoms of cognitive decline appear. However, research indicates that there are things you can do now to maintain your brain and retain cognitive function longer. Not surprisingly, physical fitness and good nutrition top the list.
Belmont Village’s Smart Tips for Brain Health: •
Eat in moderation; increase intake of protective foods that may reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, and protect brain cells.
•
Avoid artery-clogging saturated fats and cholesterol that can put you at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Use mono-and polyunsaturated fats like olive oil. Bake or grill – don’t fry!
•
Eat your brussel sprouts! Dark-skinned fruits and vegetables have the highest levels of naturally occurring antioxidants – kale, spinach, brussel and alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, beets, red bell pepper, onion, corn and eggplant top the veggie list.
•
Plum picks for antioxidant-rich fruits include, well, plums. Also, prunes, raisins, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, oranges, red grapes and cherries
•
Swim upstream with cold water fish containing beneficial omega-3 fatty acids like halibut, mackerel, salmon, trout and tuna.
•
Go nuts for almonds, pecans and walnuts – they’re a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant.
•
Take your vitamins - Especially vitamin E, or vitamins E and C together, vitamin B12 and folate. All may be important in lowering your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. A brain-healthy diet will help your body use these vitamins effectively.
Belmont Village Senior Living provides a range of memory care and enrichment programs designed to help maintain mental fitness. Chicagoland communities are located in Glenview, Buffalo Grove, Carol Stream and Oak Park. For more information, visit www.belmontvillage.com.

It seems almost too much to ask for, but Assisted Living/Alzheimer’s Medical Home Health residents of The Merion are finding their new home to be elegant and upscale senior living at affordable prices, while offering a convenient lifestyle. The Merion in Evanston is a luxury independent senior living rental community. Formerly the North Shore Retirement Hotel, The Merion has been exquisitely transformed with new infrastructure and finishes. As a rental community, there is no purchase required. Apartments come beautifully furnished. Leigh and Betty Rosenblum moved to The Merion earlier this year. “We knew that we wanted to move to a retirement community and looked at different options but liked the advantages we saw at The Merion,” said Leigh, a retired physician from Northbrook. The Merion is located in the heart of downtown Evanston, a location that the Rosenblums love. In a bustling neighborhood close to the Lake, with great dining and shopping venues and wonderful entertainment and recreational opportunities just steps away, the location offers every type of amenity that independent and active seniors enjoy. “We really like the intellectual aspect of the opportunities afforded here. The proximity to Northwestern University and its programs was an important factor to us while choosing The Merion,” said Leigh. Felice Rolfes decided that she was ready to simplify her life. Having lived in a total of eight states and held down numerous jobs including flight attendant and real estate agent, Felice wanted to kick back and enjoy being closer to her family. While living in Phoenix, she discovered The Merion on Google, and sent her sons in Evanston, to check it out. When they gave their enthusiastic approval, Felice decided to make the move, sight unseen. The first time she walked in the beautifully renovated building was on her move-in day and she was thrilled. “It was like walking into the Waldorf Astoria,” she said. Felice, who said she is “done with cooking and entertaining, decided on a spacious one-bedroom apartment. “I hit the jackpot,” she said. Felice boasted that she only packed her clothes to come with her, having decided that the lovely furniture and artwork offered by The Merion was perfect. The Rosenblums decided to bring along some of their furniture to intersperse in their furnished apartment. “We feel more at home with our own items,” said Betty.

The Rosenblums particularly like the fact that they rent their two-bedroom apartment at The Merion, making their retirement living more affordable. “A lot of other retirement communities have large entrance fees. Even though they’re partially refundable, it’s still a lot of money upfront and there may be a long wait to get the money back,” said Leigh, who added that it was important to him to be able to stay liquid. “The food here is great,” said Leigh, who with Betty frequently entertains guests at The Merion. On-site dining venues include the JEM Dining Room, the Crystal Lounge and the Bistro. Residents are also able to request in-room dining. The staff at The Merion earns rave reviews. “The people who work here are very cooperative. They’re helpful and accommodating. I have nothing but positive things to say about the staff,” said Leigh. “Everyone is very warm, helpful and cordial,” said Felice. With the many amenities offered at The Merion, prospective residents are always pleasantly surprised at its affordability. “When they start calculating the expenses that they’d save by living here: maintenance, repair, housekeeping, real-estate taxes, lawn care, insurance, etc., they quickly figure out that living here is really a great value,” said Margaret Gergen, director of resident services of The Merion. “What could be better than The Merion?” questioned Felice. “Look where I’m at! It’s a perfect location and I only write one check a month. One check! What a great concept. What more can you ask? Whoever planned and plotted The Merion has done a magnificent job!” The Merion is a luxury senior apartment community for active, independent retirees seeking a hassle-free rental home in Evanston. Formerly known as The North Shore Hotel, The Merion has been totally renovated with upscale finishes and amenities. For additional information, visit www.MerionEvanston.com.

COMFORT CARE. SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE. !
Hospice is physical, emotional and spiritual support for patients and families living with advanced complex illness. Hospice is a team, working with a patient’s physician to maximize pain relief and comfort. The team includes home health aides and nurses who see to the patient’s medical needs and help family members and caregivers understand any medical changes that may occur. Social workers also visit with patients and families to provide psychological and social support and offer their skills in securing community services and making necessary plans. Pastoral care staff are on hand to offer spiritual support to individuals of any belief system. Volunteers visit to do everything from singing to sitting vigil. Bereavement services are offered to families. In addition, alternative therapies, like massage, music therapy and pet therapy, are often available. When Is the Right Time? Hospice care should be considered when a person has a life-limiting illness that is progressing despite treatment. This decision does not need to be made alone. Consulting loved ones, doctors and hospice staff can help to chart the best course. Because of the support and care we offer at Rainbow Hospice, our families often tell us they wish they had taken advantage of our services sooner. Make a call to find out if hospice could help your loved one and family. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (www.caringinfo.org) offers Family Evaluation of Hospice Care information and other resources to help you ensure that the hospice you choose has the high standards you desire. Of course, talking to hospices to determine if they fit with your family goals is the final determining factor. Why Choose Rainbow? According to The Journal of Palliative Medicine, only 11% of nursing home residents with advanced dementia are referred to hospice. Patients with dementia can reap great benefits from hospice care and advanced dementia is, in fact, a qualifying condition for
