then it is logical to assume that Negroes should have at least 30% of the jobs in any particular company, and jobs in all categories rather than only in menial areas.” From a 1968 Playboy magazine interview Speech in Memphis, April 3, 1968, the day before King was assassinated

...who gets their “pet”-money? As residents request of their aldermen to repair sidewalks, curbs, alleys and other work to be done; ward-after-ward, from Englewood to the Westside of Chicago, every African American ward (at least) is witnessing the same disparity of contracts and jobs of the Alderman’s Menu Fund, a $1.32 Million pet fund spent how the alderman wants it to be spent on improvements. The funds are controlled by each of the 50 aldermen. Unfortunately, the Aldermanic Menu contracts and labor has not represented the racial make-up of the wards. Re-addressing the issue from 2009, Black Contractors in the Neighbor (BCN), an affiliate of Black Wall Street Chicago (BWSC) met with Alderman Robert Fioretti (2) where he reinsured his pleaded to sponsor legislation for Parity of the aldermanic Menu funds last November 2014. While best known for his “I Have a Dream” speech, King’s legacy included much more than that. Could King be the King of all time. MLK broke historic barriers. King’s historic achievement are patriotism and love for America as well for his people and more for God. Just as Dr. King believed in non violence, our problem in America is refusing to see our modern King. He was a centrist to many whites, yet if we can listen to King on today’s issues his words are obvious and much harder for us to deny today. So what in the world are we still fighting about? Why did they fight Dr. King? For me, the comparison is obvious today in his own words. Page 12

A woman ticketed for baring her breasts files suit to Chicago laws that dictate how and who covers up. The federal lawsuit filed by Sonoko Tagami claims a Chicago municipal code is unconstitutional after a female cop ticketed the woman for violating the city’s indecent exposure law at an Aug. 24 “GoTopless” rally. The petite Japanese activist has long been going to protests organized by nonprofit Go Topless. At the August rally, she's seen topless with a pink skirt, a video shared by the Chicago Sun -Times shows. She calmly accepted the ticket from Officer Ramona Stovall as witnesses asked if pasties over her breasts would have made a difference. The lawsuit filed, November 11 contends the ticket infringed on Tagami's freedom of speech by prohibiting her from baring all at the protest. The officer had threatened to arrest Tagami for violating a law that doesn't allow gentitals or a woman’s breast “at or below the upper edge of the areola thereof of any female person” to be exposed, according to the lawsuit. So much for breast feeding in public.

Students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia walked out of class on Monday to protest a school official’s Twitter message that referred to young black men as a “nightmare” for white fathers. According to WVEC, the Twitter post was made in June by the school administrator, but students only recently noticed it. The tweet was a reposting of a message from an account called @OrNahhTweets. It showed a photograph of seven white girls in prom-style dresses with seven African-American young men in tuxedos. The caption on the photo read, “every white girl’s father’s worst nightmare or not.”

“The Committee is particularly concerned at the reported current police violence in Chicago, especially against African American and Latino young people subjected to excessive force by Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers. It also expresses its deep concern at the frequent and recurrent police shootings or fatal pursuits of unarmed black individuals. In this regard, the Committee notes the alleged difficulties to hold police officers and their employers accountable for abuses.” In their observations, UNCAT recommends the U.S.:

Ensure that all instances of police brutality and excessive use of force by law enforcement officers are investigated promptly, effectively and impartially by an independent mechanism with no institutional or hierarchical connection between the investigators and the alleged perpetrators Prosecute persons suspected of torture or ill treatment and, if found guilty, ensure that they are punished in accordance with the gravity of their acts. Provide effective remedies and rehabilitation to the victims. Provide redress for CPD torture survivors by supporting the passage of the Ordinance entitled Reparations for the Chicago Police Torture Survivors.

"Under Mayor Emanuel's watch, the CHA has failed to release 13,500 available housing vouchers, left thousands of public housing units vacant, stopped rebuilding public housing and stockpiled over $432 million in surplus cash at the expense of housing for thousands," said Paul Burns with the Metropolitan Tenants Organization and the Chicago Housing Initiative, which organized today's protest. "And yet today, the mayor shows up to a breakfast about ending homelessness," he continued. "This is hypocrisy, and we will not be silent ... The truth is that until the mayor begins talking about reforming the CHA and setting clear standards for the agency, he is not talking about ending homelessness."

The 2015 Chicago mayoral election will take place on February 24, 2015, to elect the Mayor of Chicago. The election is non-partisan and if no candidate receives an absolute majority, a runoff will be held between the top two finishers on April 7, 2015. Incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel did face ten candidates; Now only four. Emmanell is a member of the Democratic Party who has been in office since 2011 polls late 2014 showed him at 33% with the voters, and in January they show him closer to 50%. The African America vote continues to be factor if he is re-elected, and for all candidates as well. Chicago Street Journal will profile all the candidates.

“It’s about bringing people out to vote.” “Rahm’s numbers are low, yet he won with a very low turnout.” “As long as you prevent a candidate from getting 50 percent plus one, you’ll get a runoff” and that is his goal. Walls continued to add, "Most people are Again not aware that Blacks are the majority of Chicago’s voters. Of 1,368,708 people registered to vote in Chicago, 643,292 are Black, 451,673 White and only 214,440 Latino voters. By Chinta Strausberg What Shall I Do Next When I Don’t Know Next What To Do? is a testament as Dr. Willie Wilson attests, in this touching autobiography about a boy with big dreams that went beyond his sharecropping family. Just when you think 66-year-old Dr. Willie Wilson has done everything—being a deacon, a philanthropist, a successful businessman, a recording artist and the producer of WGN-TV’s “Singsation,” he comes out with yet another stinger—this time Wilson is announcing he’s running for mayor of Chicago. Dr. Wilson gathered 47,000 signatures before the filing deadline. Of the required 12,500 in two weeks. Dr. Wilson moved from his Country Club Hills home to downtown Chicago more than a year ago, and he has his eyes set on claiming the Fifth Floor of City Hall. “I am with the community, of the community, and I never left the community,” he said referring to his work that kept him in Chicago. His announcement comes on the heels of a very controversial election of his friend, now Gov.-Elect Bruce Rauner, a Republican, who defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. Dr. Wilson was one of several Afri-

can American ministers who endorsed Rauner. Wilson is on Rauner’s transition team. Wilson describes his political stripes as being a “life-long independent.”Born in Gilbert, Louisiana, Dr. Wilson grew up very poor and eventually made his way to Chicago where he worked for $2 an hour mopping floors and cleaning tables at McDonalds. One day he boldly asked McDonald founder Ray Kroc to give him a restaurant. Surprisingly, Kroc did just that and ultimately, Wilson owned four successful McDonald restaurants. But, he wanted more. Wilson sold his restaurants and started the Omar Medical Supplies Company. Besides his “Singsation” gospel show, Dr. Wilson is also a gospel artists and has sold a number of records, but his strong point is his business acumen, and that is why he wants to be mayor of Chicago to run the city like a business but in a manner where he has input from the citizens and compassion for the poor.Wilson joins Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), William ‘Dock’ Walls, and Jesus “Chuy” Garcia. All hope to defeat Mayor Rahm Emanuel who has a huge political war chest and who is making his rounds in the black faith community to solidify his support.. “People trust me,” Wilson said. “They know I give a lot, and they know I will act in their best interests.” Explaining, Wilson said he would get rid of the controversial red light program. Wilson criticized Mayor Emanuel for just now fixing the streets of Chicago chalking the late action to the upcoming Feb. 24, 2015 municipal elections. Dr. Wilson is still doing a slow burn over Mayor Emanuel closing 50 Chicago Public Schools, and he’s not happy with the contract letting system, high parking rates, crime, which he vowed to reduce through job creation, and economic development.

Withdrawers: Dr. Amara Enyia endorses Fioretti for Mayor, as Robert Shaw joins Dr. Willie Wilson and Frederick Collins undecided. A lawyer and community activist, Amara Enyia withdrew from the crowded mayoral race and announced she is endorsing Ald. Bob Amara Enyia Fioretti (2) because he best mirrors her vision for Chicago. Enyia, who was embroiled in a petition challenge fight, said, “We are at the point where the distraction of going through the petition process would have diminished our ability to carry our message forward at a very critical time. Robert Shaw bowing out of the crowded mayoral race and embracing Wilson, Shaw said the reason “is because I know Willie Wilson…for many, many years…a church man who believes in God.” Frederick Collins who had the number one spot on the ballot withFrederick Collins draw displeased with the Black leadership in taking advantage of his number one spot. He held back not wanting to make any endorsement but later told CSJ that he will closer to the election. In accepting Enyia’s endorsement, Fioretti said, “Amara is a woman of commitment and of action who cares deeply about Chicago. Her presence in this race is testament to the widespread understanding that we need a change at City Hall, that we need a mayor who embraces all of our city and all of its people. I am happy to have her supporting this campaign.” Robert Shaw

Gov. Rauner signs Executive Order for ethical and responsive government Bans “revolving door” of state employees to lobbying entities; Further restricts bans on gifts from prohibited sources; Expands disclosures of economic interests; Reviews state employment contracts SPRINGFIELD – Governor Bruce Rauner signed Executive Order 1509 today, which tightens ethical requirements for all state employees to ensure they adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity and impartiality while working for the people of Illinois. “Business as usual is over in Illinois and we need to regain the trust of the taxpayers,” Gov. Rauner said. “Today, we are showing the State of Illinois we have learned our lessons and are changing.” Executive Order 15-09 bans the revolving door of executive branch and state agency employees from negotiating for a new position with a lobbyist or lobbying entity while employed. It also restricts former employees from accepting positions as a paid lobbyist or with a lobbying entity for one year after leaving their position. It also further restricts gifts from prohibited sources by state employees, their spouse, or immediate family members living with that employee. They are not allowed to solicit or knowingly accept any gift from those sources. Further, this Executive Order expands what state employees must disclose on their statement of economic interests, which is already required under state law. State employees now must identify if they, their spouse or children under 18 have more than a 5 percent interest

in a property in which the state is a tenant, lessor, or other interest in the property. Those same people must also disclose, regardless if they are paid or not, any non-governmental positions that they hold. These positions may be with business entities, nonprofit organizations, labor groups, educational institutions, and any other type of entity. Also, state employees, their spouse, and any children under the age of 18 must disclose any ongoing litigation in which they are a named party with the State of Illinois. They also must disclose if they have any financial interests in lawsuits against the State of Illinois. The Executive Order also requires full cooperation with the Special Master appointed by the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois to investigate any hiring practices within state agencies. Finally, state agencies are now required to have all employment contracts reviewed and approved by the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget (GOMB). The order also instructs the GOMB to conduct a thorough review of employment contracts within the State of Illinois to identify political, wasteful or other improper purposes. “The State of Illinois needs to rebuild its trust with its citizens, and today’s Executive Order takes steps to ensure that starts now,” Gov. Rauner added. “We have a moral obligation to rebuild the reputation within our state, along with our perception within the country, to ultimately renew taxpayers’ faith in government.”

Doris Lewis Brooks, Old School Values, New School Candidate For 31 years, Doris Lewis Brooks and her husband, Stephen, have resided in the Washington Heights community where they raised their two daughters and became business owners. Witnessing with dismay, the

21st Ward Aldermanic Candidate changes that have transpired in a place that they have called home for over three decades, Lewis Brooks realized that her strength, energy and commitment would be of great service in working with her fellow residents of the 21st Ward. Focusing on issues that will once again return the 21st Ward into a progressive community, such as restoring it into a safe area where young families can flourish and seniors can enjoy their golden years in comfort, Brooks, a woman who is never one to shy away from challenges, decided to become a candidate for alderman of the 21st Ward. Endorsed by the Chicago Police Sergeants Association; the Fraternal Order of Police; Citizens to Abolish Red Light Cameras; and the Honorable Judge Leslie Elaine South (Ret.), Doris Lewis Brooks is committed, energetic, outspoken, and will bring life back to the 21st Ward. Meet Doris Lewis Brooks… Accessibility: Realistically, as alderman I am unable to speak with each and every person in the ward, but at the same time I am well aware that everyone has something to say. To ensure that input from constituents is received and responded to, I will reinstate precinct captains and establish two constituents’ nights per week: one on the eastern section of the ward and one on the western section. Additionally, I will hold town hall meetings in a central area of the ward. Inclusion: The alderman gets $1.3 million per year for discretionary funds. I will include constituents in the decision-making process to determine where and how these funds will be spent and will keep constituents in-

formed on major legislation and ordinances that affects them. Moreover, I will not vote on measures because it is politically expedient to do so. Education: Teaching our youth is a parent-teacher partnership. Parents must become more involved with the day-to-day preparation for their children to come to school and learn. We entrust our children to the teacher, but they are not babysitters. Teachers should be commended, not kicked to the curb when a charter school has opened. I will only support the establishment of charter schools in the 21st Ward with the majority of the constituents’ support. I also want to encourage the local businesses to sponsor a school; I don’t care if it is a block of notebook paper or a box of pencils—give something! Employment: The proliferation of drug abuse and gangs is directly related to the lack of jobs, not just in the 21st Ward, but citywide. I will create a task force—a think tank if you will—to brainstorm ideas that will encourage entrepreneurs to open new businesses in the ward and hire from within the ward. The majority of the businesses in Beverly are owned by Beverly residents as well as the people that work there. We have Big Box stores on 87th and 83rd Streets, but the majority of the workers live outside the ward. I will work to establish funding and education to enable entrepreneurs to acquire franchises that are otherwise being opened by people that are not from our community. Ward Appearance: Look at Beverly Hills, just west of Ashland. In the winter, it is so pretty with all the trees on 95th Street lit up with holiday lights; in the summer, the flower boxes are ablaze with color. There is a large sign at Western and Ashland that says, “Welcome to Beverly Hills.” They are proud of their community! Why can’t we be proud of ours? Parts of our ward look like a ghost town, while the other looks like the shanty towns. I will work to have abandoned buildings saved and used as low-income housing and temporary housing for the homeless, until such time, as we can get permanent housing established. Senior Citizens: We still have seniors that are hungry and losing their homes due to property tax delinquency or other bills. I will provide seminars solely for seniors to obtain information on current matters, such as taxes, housing, transportation, health and financial assistance, and other important areas. I will also set up an intergenerational initiative that would partner the Chicago Public Schools in the ward with seniors of the ward who would share their life experiences with students in the elementary and high schools. I believe that would create a whole new respect for seniors as well as letting young people know that there is hope for our future. Independence: I will be independent in judgment and decision-making when it comes to representing my constituents. I will not vote for something in the city council because it is the popular thing to do or because the mayor wants it. Remember, it is the City Council who creates ordinances; the mayor just has the veto power. At least, that is how it used to be, and that is how it should be again. In other words, I will not be another rubber stamp for the mayor. How can you vote for what the mayor wants voted on 100% of the time? That’s how the citizens of Chicago ended up with the exorbitant parking meter fees; entrapping speed cameras; and an underutilized $60 million pedestrian runway across Lake Shore Drive. For those who know Doris Lewis Brooks, know why it is understandable she would seek this position. She has what it takes to place community needs in the forefront and the energy to seek ventures that will lead to the successful revitalization and improvement of daily living in the 21st Ward. thing I know.” Statement from We Charge Genocide Organizers: “We went to Geneva as a delegation of We Charge Genocide with the intention of getting Chicago visibly named as a site for systematic, horrific and punitive police violence against Black and Brown youth on a daily basis, and it is safe to say that we achieved our goal. While going to Geneva to present our report on police violence against Black & Brown youth in Chicago was not our end goal as We Charge Genocide, we feel a slight sense of relief in the fact that the violence that Black and Brown youth systematically experience every day in Chicago is now getting the attention, internationally, that it deserves, which will only serve as an uplifting foundation in our continued work in challenging police violence in Chicago.” UNCAT comments on police torture survivors in Chicago were prompted by members of the Chicago Torture Justice Memorials (CTJM) who testified in Geneva and submitted a shadow report on the Burge torture cases. The report submitted by WCG to UNCAT is titled, We Charge Genocide: Police Violence Against Chicago’s Youth of Color. Key findings include:

From 2009 to 2013, although Black people comprised only 32.3% of Chicago’s overall population, 75% of police shooting victims were Black. Additionally, in the first six months of 2014, 23 of 27 people shot by the CPD were Black. Between 2009 and 2011, 92% of Taser uses involved a Black or Latino target, including 49 youth under the age of 16 (with some as young as 8 years old). Black youth accounted for 77% of the arrests of youth in 2011 and 79% in 2012. Latino youth accounted for most of the other arrests, i.e., 18% of these arrests in 2011 and 17% in 2012. A brutality complaint is 94% less likely to be sustained in Chicago than in the nation as a whole: Only 0.48% of brutality complaints against the CPD are sustained (as opposed to 8% nationally). Between 2002 and 2004, Chicago residents filed 10,149 complaints of excessive force, illegal searches, racial abuse, and false arrests against the CPD. Only 124 of these 10,149 complaints were sustained (1.2%), and a mere 19 cases (0.18%) resulted in any meaningful penalty (a suspension of a week or more). WCG confuse Body cameras will not halt extrajudicial executions by police officers, only providing us more horrific footage to view. 39% of Chicago’s 2014 operating budget was allocated to the Chicago Police Department in a period where schools and community services faced sharp funding cuts and closures. Any viable resolution to the issue of police violence must involve reallocating these resources from militarized police into community services to benefit all Chicagoans. All reforms that strengthen the prison industrial complex must be strongly opposed. WCG will continue to work for initiatives that serve communities, including reparations for victims of police torture, Civilian Police Accountability Projects, and initiatives for data transparency in police activities. They encourage the public to join with members to reject body cameras as a band-aid solution in the struggle against police violence.

he Ninth ward is at the end of Chicago southside, It represents

Greater Roseland, encompassing: Rosemore, Pullman. Burnside, and West Pullman communities. Neighborhoods of residents whose religion committed them to temperance stood next to neighborhoods that manufactured alcohol for the Capones. The inflation of the 1970s followed by the collapse of the steel and automotive industries in the 1980s left many of Roseland's newest families without jobs. By the mid-1980s, Roseland had become known for its high rates of HUD repossessions and was designated an Urban Homestead area. Roseland has yet to recover from the effects of those decades of economic decline. The evolution and growing influence of community organizations, however, offer the possibility that Roseland might come to share in Chicago's new prosperity. Michael LaFargue is one of five candidates running for alderman. This is part of his platform.

“Commuter” tax for workers may also have to be considered as well; and 4. Selling “Corporate Sponsor Naming Rights” on public buildings other than City Hall to generate monies that would be applied directly to our pension debt.

(Continued from page 1)

CSJ: How do you propose to unite the old 6th Ward communities like Chesterfield, West Chesterfield and Roseland Heights along side the 9th Ward's original communities? LaFargue: Most residents throughout our ward have a real interest in similar “Quality–of –Life” issues. Whether you live in a middleclass household, or a lower-income household, jobs, public safety, proper ward services, good schools, beautiful parks, well-maintained property–– with strong property value–– and sound economic development is important to all of us. We will unite our neighborhoods by introducing those people who are passionate on specific ward topics to meet one another and help them work together toward common goals. They will be able to consult and collaborative with each other regardless of the community they live in. Sharing civic programs, grant and educational information via technology to the community, along with traditional community outreach will also enhance every resident’s life. We will further unite our communities by working to improve the lives of the less fortunate so that everyone has a chance on moving up the economic ladder. Finally, all of our communities possess unknown, neighborhood treasures that we all need to embrace and promote. CSJ: Chicago’s unfunded pension liability amounts to about $7,000 for each city resi-

CSJ: What changes should be made in the city’s use of tax increment financing? LaFargue: TIFs were originally designed to improve blighted areas by attracting construction and jobs. Yet the Loop, Near North Side, Near South Side and Near West Side have taken nearly $1.56 billion of the $2.45 billion in TIF dollars spent from 2004 to 2008. Only $4.8 million was spent collectively in Pullman, Riverdale, Roseland and West Pullman––all far South Side communities–– where blight is prevalent and economic development scarce. THIS IS A TRAVESTY! AREAS IN OUR WARD HAVE 24% to 61% OF HOMES BELOW THE PROVERTY LEVEL. IT’S TIME TODEMAND OUR SHARE!

dent. How should the city solve its pension crisis?

LaFargue: funding crisis include: 1. Using $1.5 billion in “TIF Reserves” to reduce the current pension deficit from $25.8 billion to $24.3 billion; 2. A “LaSalle Street Financial Transaction Tax” should be considered to Four partial solutions to the pension help reduce this deficit; 3. An out-of state

CSJ: Should members of the Board of Education be elected by the public, or continue to be appointed by the mayor? Do you support the longer school day and year? LaFargue: I advocate for an elected school board. It’s important that each part of the city is represented on this board and that those seeking the office have a resume as an educator, LSC member or be an education budget management professional. Lengthening the school day will give teachers more time to spend with students to focus on targeted, individual problem studies andand more difficult educational material. Some districts propose adding time to each class session, while

others want to add an intensive session in reading, math, English, etc.–– areas where many students aren't working at grade level. A longer school day would allow schools to spend more time on art, music, social studies, science and physical education. Lastly, it may reduce the trouble some students get into after typical school hours. What’s more, a later school day will also align better with a working parent’s schedule.

CSJ: What have you done to promote economic development in your ward? LaFargue: :As a member of the Developing Communities Project Red Line Oversight Committee, we are working on attracting businesses by advocating for the Red Line Extension to 130th and the Bishop Ford Expressway. Through our a Panels of Development we are focusing on: 1. Work Force Development – to spur job/careers and jobs in the community; 2. Land Use – identifying all available properties in the area and 3. Transit Oriented Development – to develop more business opportunities around each station. We project the Red Line Extension could generate 4,000 jobs. Minority businesses and community residents are estimated to get 2,000 of those jobs. Furthermore, we project the development around each Red Line station will generate another 2,000 jobs in the surrounding community. Supporting opportunity for economic development and employment within the 9th ward means the resurrection of the South Michigan business corridor, the 87th Street Business District, the 95th Street Business Corridor, and the Pullman Historic Community to name a few.

CSJ: Given the dismantling of the African-American middle-class since the “great” recession and the squeeze on fixedincome seniors––many of whom were government employees–– do you think the city and the 9th ward should focus more on developing programs aimed at these groups? LaFargue: Right now, our community has a lot of “Baby Boomer” residents. In their mid50’s and mid-60’s, who literally got crushed by this recession and are barely recovering because so many employers don’t want to employ older people. They lost ground with their savings, pension, and employment opportunities, while some even lost their homes. For these residents, the city should offer tax incentives to businesses, who hire the over-55 professional, or semi-professional resident. Many possess the skills that may in some instances require little or some supplemental training. While in other parts of our ward––especially the new ward areas that migrated over from the 6th Ward––well, we don’t want our seniors to feel they must leave the community they love because they no longer want to maintain a home. I believe we should also develop some upscale senior apartments similar to a “Montgomery Place that would match the middle class lifestyle these seniors are accustomed to if they have access to a $3000 a month or higher pension. And some of our seniors, especially government employees, do. Our seniors still gets to live among their friends, enjoy the city and its cultural amenities, feel safe in a controlled setting and be a part of a community that is still dear to their hearts. There are many programs to assist lower-income seniors; but they need to have access to the Internet via a tablet, supplemental training and equipment program so they (Continued on page 17)

Prior to hanging up the phone taking to an old friend, John Wesby he made a statement asking me a question; “Man I am blind about this mayor race coming up. Give me a call tomorrow and give me your take on it.” I said ‘Cool”.

Cleopatra Pendleton and Nathaniel Pendleton, parents of slain King College Prep honor student Hadiya Pendleton, reflect on the painful absence of their daughter from their lives. They were presented a Newsmakers of The Year Award at the recent Chicago Defender gala, in recognition of their ongoing anti-violence activism. Photo by John L. Alexander By Naimah Latif The shooting death of King College Prep honor student Hadiya Pendleton saddened the nation and mo v e d F i r s t L a d y Michelle Obama to come to Chicago to personally attend the funeral and offer private words of comfort to her family and friends. Nathaniel and Cleopatra Pendleton's devastating loss may have left most parents paralyzed with grief, but instead the Pendleton's sprang into action. Since the 2013 death of their daughter, they have been working non stop in the fight against gun violence. As a result of their national activism, Nathaniel and Cleopatra Pendleton were honored as Newsmakers of The Year at the annual gala. Presented by The Chicago Defender and Real Times Media, the event was attended by such notables as Governor Pat Quinn and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. The Pendleton's have been frequently sought after as speakers at anti violence rallies and have participated in a number of protest marches against gun violence. Hadiya's death sparked her friends a n d classmates to start Project Orange Tree, an organization dedicated to

p r o m o t i n g p e a c e . And yet, in the quietness of her home, away from microphones and television cameras, Mrs. Cleopatra Pendleton reflected on the never ending pain of her daughter's absence. Seeing the date of her daughter's birth and the date of her death and the dash in between, Mrs. Pendleton said she looked at the dash as a minus sign, symbolic that she is now minus her dau ghter. "I think about that all the time," she said. As a frequent speaker and advocate for sensible gun laws, she realizes the death of her daughter was the catalyst for national attention to the crisis of violence among urban youth, a crisis that for too long has been invisible to the American public. Hadiya's death at the hands of a young black male, shooting into a crowd of students he mistook to be rival gang members, drew worldwide attention to deadly environment of America's cities and helped earn Chicago the nickname "Chiraq." The Pendletons are proud of what their daughter has achieved. Hadiya Pendleton managed to change the world through her short but well-lived life. But everyday her parents remember that for the place she earned in history, she made the ultimate sacrifice.

Pondering on his blindness I thought of the Three Blind Mice, fleshes out into mischievous adventure, eventually being taken in by a farmer whose wife chases them from the house and into a bramble bush, which blinds them. Soon after, their tails are removed by "the butcher's wife". The story ends with them using a tonic to grow new tails and recover their eyesight, learning a trade, buying a house and living happily ever after. My friend ‘Wes’ formally 30 years as a maintenance guy with Chicago Public Schools, he and Chicagoans alike and mainly the Black Community has been hit hard this year with unemployment, with Blacks the number is probably closer to 30%.Black youth fares even worse coming in at around 50%.still at 12% of the city contracts. The saddest is the city fines, the jails, and education, the lack of urban development in the last four years on and on. So the fact of racial accountability comes to play in Chicago politics again. If you're like most people, you're probably already slacking on views on this election of “Here we go ahead” and the cold weather isn't helping. Getting close to February 24, it kind of goes like this.... 1. We reassess issues and lives how they have effective us from the last four years. 2. Think of all of the election in the past after Harold Washington have miserably failed. 3. Now something more determined than ever what campaign wagon to get on! But yet! What about going fishing, as the late Lu Palmer once said? Wait a minute; we had this same feeling the last election of 2011 and the one before. Why do we keep failing? The truth is, to make changes, as Harold said, “Whenever, a group is in the Majority, it’s their turn.” One Blind Mice can’t see that. There has to be more collective determination. But when you have Three

Blind Mice in the Bramble bush. My friend Wes represents many. He don’t see the real issues facing Black Chicago being institutional racism but a lack of resolve by leadership with a tonic to lead, take a position to their constituents. So he ask me the question and I am going to pass the question on. Well the greatest known three ‘Men in Black’ on the globe is from Chicago, and live or work in Hyde Park, a mix community (other than Sax preacher and the TOMA). It’s Barack Obama on 50th Street, Jesse Jackson on 50th Street and Min. Louis Farrakhan on 48th Street. All in walking distant from each other. This election, instead of just getting all gung ho and fantasizing, about what we want to achieve. Let's channel that energy into how we can actually make it happen! Those Men in Black, quietly seems to be the Three Blind Mice. Let’s look at it. . They supposed to have the same vision and agenda rather different means getting there but they do. 2. They have created and achieved a high level actions. 3. Clearly they identify our motivations and our vision is important and needs to happen. . Surely they can materialize our vision into reality. If Obama can do the president thing, and Farrakhan can do the One Million Man thing, and Jackson can go all other the world and free hostages. And all three can do the preacher thing in raising money. Suring we will not be amazed at how they can get things done and overcome the barriers to Chicago fifth floor. 5. Last but not least, pray and unite our vision with our Creator, All have the combined blessings of God in their hearts to do beyond what is not normal. Some say they are just men. But if they come using their minds of three He has already given them and use the tonic of the will of the people; then they can go living happily ever after. If we are barking up the wrong election say it. Like those that support the current mayor. Rather than remain silent, say it. Are the Alderman Rubble Stamps or just see

good decision of the Mayor.

How many times do we have to see a bunch of highly educated Black “leaders” in expensive suits talk about the problems facing America and not a word was relevant before the election or even to the ‘hood ? We call upon the Three Wise great leaders from Chicago. We often waste a ton of time with the “if this and if that”. Let’s start at the top. We don't need them to change their agenda. The reality is we supposed to be their agenda, their. Yes if it was not for us they will not be where they are today. Obama would be a grassroots organizer like me, Jackson maybe an ex sports pro. And Farrakhan would be signing Opera somewhere. And part time Chicago leader Al Sharpton, well no telling. We cannot expect different results, if leaders like them acting like three blind mice, do an analysis of the election to the news media. If they get off of the bench and be the star players they are, our thinking, words, actions, associations and environment, we will start to see changes in our lives and on this Election Day. And don’t give me that crap, “We all are leaders”. Black economic empowerment will continue to be impotent with their leadership. However, this Black History Month will be making history oppose to reviewing, The excitement in the Daniels campaign is at an all-time high and eager to get feel good ideology of civil rights with no political strong out his message to change the community for the better along with your help. hold. ust what does it take to knock an incumbent mayor out of the race? The Huffington Post interviewed Richard Winger, “an expert on ballot access legal issues” who pointed out that Chicago, “the third-largest U.S. city has the toughest ballot requirements in the country. Contenders for mayor must file 12,500 voter signatures with the elections board, compared with 3,750 in New York and no more than 2,000 in Los Angeles.” The larger the number of signatures required, obviously, the greater the advantage to the incumbent, and then there are the perfunctory challenges. Few make the cut. In this case, five: the incumbent, of course, as well as Alderman Robert Fioretti, Cook County Commissioner and former State Senator Jesús "Chuy" García, the well-practiced and robustlyplatformed William "Dock" Walls— businessman, activist and former aide to Mayor Harold Washington, and finally, medical supply company executive Willie Wilson, who, after donating a cool million to his own campaign has been taken seriously by the press though polling at only 7% (while the margin of error, plus or minus 4% of a 100% total, might be significant here). Respectable candidates who might not have dropped out of the race if the race were in New York or L.A. included Chicago officer, Frederick Collins, whose energy and one -liners motivated audiences across Chicago to laugh, then “stand up” for change, focusing on injustice; Amara Enyia, urban affairs consultant and community activist with a diverse, large and loyal following who wins the social media award for most Facebook responses to daily postings, connected, deeply with the heartbeat of youth across Chicago with the well articulated message: “Younger people need to be included in the process; we need to have a voice.” William J. Kelly, a political activist, columnist, and Republican candidate for Illinois Comptroller in 2010 and 2014 would certainly have made it on the ballot in a different city, as would Robert Shaw, former Chicago City

Alderman and former Cook County Commissioner. (Jiminy Cricket, if they couldn’t stay on the ballot, who could?) So, given the difficulty of getting onto the balMim DePelichy, lot—shouldn’t Associate Publisher the individuals who made the cut be invited to the debates? Mayor Rahm will participate in five campaign debates between now and Feb. 10, according to Chicago Sun Times’ Fran Spelman, who says, “The long-awaited debates are expected to include Emanuel and his three strongest challengers: County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia; Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) and businessman Willie Wilson.” Where’s the fifth candidate? According to Crain’s Chicago Business, Greenberg Quinlan Rosner took the most recent poll, between January 3rd and 6th — and Crain’s headlines roared: “EMANUEL HIT THE 50% MARK IN THE LATEST POLL.” 600 Six-hundred “likely voters” were surveyed, ostensibly with a 4% margin of error. I’ve never believed in polls, could 600 persons surveyed possibly predict the outcome of half a million votes? But, for the sake of argument, if Emanuel won 50% with 4% margin of error (and lacking Diebolt chicanery), then a run-off is likely. This runoff, however, wouldn’t as likely occur if any of the incumbent’s challengers were missing. Do the math. So why, please, why has one of the candidates been dis-included from so many forums? I hear it said, he might “split the vote”. The powerful public perception that if Mr. Walls were Ross Perot, running in this Chicago mayoral election against Bill Clinton (Continued on page 19)

Chicago Street Journal sissippi and Georgia and Alabama, I feel discouraged. Living every day under the threat of death, I feel discouraged sometimes. Living every day under extensive criticisms, even from Negroes, I feel discouraged sometimes. Yes, sometimes I feel discouraged and feel my work’s in vain. But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again. RC: Religion has been a very substance of your life, how was this developed? King : Even though I have never had an abrupt conversion experience, religion has been real to me and closely knitted to life. In fact the two cannot be separated; religion for me is life. .It is quite easy for me to think of a God of love mainly because I grew up in a family where love was central and where lovely relationships were ever present. RC: Here in Chicago we have more churches than businesses, and more social ills in communities where most of the churches are. There is a critical taste in the minds of many with the religious leadership. Being a preacher what is your assessment of that? King :. ..As a preacher... I must admit that

W

here is America today in what can be in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King? This mock Q&A from President Barack Obama to the community streets. America in view by what could be related to his words of yesterday. Let us begin... RC: This is the month we are in memory of your life. How do you feel about a holiday in your honor, a monument and even with Stevie Wonder having a hit song about you?

King: I'd like somebody to mention that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like for somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try to feed the hungry. I want you to be able to

say that day that I did try in my life to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say, on that day, that I did try, in my life, to visit those who were in prison. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. R.C. What about the title of Drum Major of peace? King: Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter. I won't have any money to leave behind. I won't have the fine and luxurious things of life to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that's all I want to say. R.C. Besides your strive to continue your service; Having you got sort of weary? King: I don’t mind telling you … sometimes I feel discouraged. I felt discouraged in Chicago. As I move through Mis-

I have gone through those moments when I was greatly disappointed with the church and what it has done in this period of social change. Science investigates religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power religion gives man wisdom which is control. The apparent apathy of the Negro ministers presented a special problem. A faithful few had always shown a deep concern for social problems, but too many had remained aloof from the area of social responsibility. Much of this indifference, it is true, stemmed from a sincere feeling that ministers were not supposed to get mixed up in such earthly, temporal matters as social and economic improvement; they were to "preach the gospel" and keep men's minds centered on "the heavenly." But however sincere, this view of religion, I felt, was too confined. RC: As you know we are now celebrating the election of the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama. In the words of the late James Brown noted for “Say it Loud’ I am Black and Proud” a reinforcement of Black Power. Should ‘Black Power’ be acknowl-

edged with President Obama? King: All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality....... ….In the final analysis the weakness of Black Power is its failure to see that the black man needs the white man and the white man needs the black man. However much we may try to romanticize the slogan, there is no separate black path to power and fulfillment that does not intersect white paths, and there is no separate white path to power and fulfillment, short of social disaster, that does not share that power with black aspirations for freedom and human dignity. We are bound together in a single garment of destiny.

We must stand up and say, "I'm black and I'm beautiful," and this self-affirmation is the black man's need, made compelling by the white man's crimes against him. I am not interested in power for power's sake, but I'm interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good.

RC: During your life you were known as an extremist. Not like Malcolm X, but still an extremist even among some Black people. There is a group of activist in Chicago by the name of VOTE (Voice of The Exoffenders. Their leaders are Paul, Mark and Joseph. So happens, names represented in the Bible. Some would call them radicals and others say its courage. Then others say they need to watch what they say and how they do and say things. How do you assess them? King :. When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.... Was not Jesus an extremist for love --"Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you." Was not Amos an extremist for justice -...Was not Paul an extremist for the gospel of Jesus Christ -- "I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus." Was not Martin Luther an extremist -- "Here I stand; I can do none other so help me God." Was not John Bunyan an extremist -- "I will stay in jail to the end of my days before I make a butchery of my conscience." Was not Abraham Lincoln an extremist -"This nation cannot survive half slave and half free." Was not Thomas Jefferson an extremist -- "We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal." So the question is not whether we will be extremist but what kind of extremist will we be. Will we be extremists for hate or will we be extremists for love? Will we be extremists for the preservation of injustice--or will we be extremists for the cause of justice? In that dramatic scene on Calvary's hill, three men were crucified. We must not forget that all three were crucified for the same crime--the crime of extremism. Two were extremists for immorality, and thusly fell below their environment. The other, Jesus Christ, was an extremist for love, truth and goodness, and thereby rose above his environment. RC: So is going to jail in your case an example of that. King: I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law. RC: On the point of Malcolm X. What was the relationship of you two if any? King: I met Malcolm X once in Washing-

ton, but circumstances didn't enable me to talk with him for more than a minute. He is very articulate … but I totally disagree with many of his political and philosophical views — at least insofar as I understand where he now stands. I don't want to seem to sound self-righteous, or absolutist, or that I think I have the only truth, the only way. Maybe he does have some of the answer. I don't know how he feels now, but I know that I have often wished that he (Continued on page 13)

Chicago Street Journal (Continued from page 12)

would talk less of violence, because violence is not going to solve our problem. ... I feel that Malcolm has done himself and our people a great disservice. Fiery, demagogic oratory in the black ghettos, urging Negroes to arm themselves and prepare to engage in violence, as he has done, can reap nothing but grief. You know, right before he was killed he came down to Selma and said some pretty passionate things against me. And that surprised me because after all it was my territory there. But afterwards he took my wife aside, and said he thought he could hip me more by attacking me than praising me. He thought it would make it easier for me in the long run.

R.C. They was a program a few years ago honoring you, in which your chil-

RC: People still question your stance on to continue talking about ‘love thy neighbor’, turn the other cheek. Are you about tired of that? King : ... And I'm going to talk about it everywhere I go. I know it isn't popular to talk about it in some circles today. I'm not talking about emotional bosh when I talk about love, I'm talking about a strong, demanding love. And I have seen too much hate. I've seen too much hate on the faces of sheriffs in the South. I've seen hate on the faces of too many Klansmen and too many White Citizens Councilors in the South to want to hate myself, because every time I see it, I know that it does something to their faces and their personalities and I say to myself that hate is too great a burden to bear. ... And the beautiful thing is that we are moving against wrong when we do it, because John was right, God is love. He who hates does not know God, but he who has love has the key that unlocks the door to the meaning of ultimate reality. RC: . Let us talk about some domestic issues. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he do not care about the rich nor the poor. There are those of us that can not see a future, men from young to old selling loose squares to make ends meet. Chicago has transformed over 40,000 black families from Public Housing over the last 10 years as it has build the “White Wall Street” around the Loop, as the poor were an eye soar to the city; So Stephanie Gathin once said, ‘What the city has done to Black people here in Chicago is a total shame of the leadership.”

How do we address the issue of the poor? King Jr. Today the poor are less often dismissed, I hope, from our consciences by being branded as inferior or incompetent. We also know that no matter how dynamically the economy develops and expands, it does not

dren did not acknowledge Harry Belafonte. What is your take on that? King: Over 400 of our followers had gone to jail; some had been bailed out, but we had used up all of our money for bail, and about 300 remained in jail, and I felt personally responsible. It was then that President Kennedy telephoned my wife, Coretta. After that, my jail conditions were relaxed, and the following Sunday afternoon -- it was Easter Sunday -- two S.C.L.C. attorneys were permitted to visit me. The next day, word came to me from New York that Harry Belafonte had raised $50,000 that was available immediately for bail bonds, and if more was needed, he would raise that.

eliminate all poverty. The problem indicates that our emphasis must be twofold. We must create full employment or we must create incomes. People must be made consumers by one method or the other. Once they are placed in this position we need to be concerned that the potential of the individual is not wasted. New forms of work that enhance the social good will have to be devised for those for whom traditional jobs are not available. RC: That point is external issues, what about internal? Such as Clarence Thomas and even for the most part Chicago Aldermen that have not address the Parity Legislation for contracts where Black receive only 12%. And have not addressed it for years as elected officials?

King : ., If a city has a 30% Negro popu-

lation, then it is logical to assume that

making a living than making a life. RC: I have to remind people like Mark Allen, Paul McKinney and Revin Fellows about the “N” word. There is store in African, and Taiwan using it with your name . How do you address the word that once was

Negroes should have at least 30% of the jobs in any particular company, and jobs in all categories rather than only in menial areas. from a 1968 Playboy magazine interview Speech in Memphis, April 3, 1968, the day before King was assassinated In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends..... Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. ….. "Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it is right."…. Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity... The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict …..We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.

R.C. So are you saying Black should strive to gain what is theirs in line with the capital system we have in place? King: I understand that you have an economic system in America known as Capitalism. Through this economic system you have been able to do wonders. You

have become the richest nation in the world, and you have built up the greatest system of production that history has ever known. All of this is marvelous, but Americans, there is the danger that you will misuse your Capitalism. I still contend that money can be the root of all evil. It can cause one to live a life of gross materialism. I am afraid that many among you are more concerned about

considered a hatred word among black people and now it is developing a new meaning of acceptance. What is the physic of the word? King: Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true. As long as the mind is enslaved, the body can never be free. Psychological freedom, a firm sense of self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night of physical slavery. …… And, with a spirit straining toward true self-esteem, the Negro must boldly throw off the manacles of self-abnegation and say to himself and to the world, "I am somebody. I am a person. I am a man with dignity and honor. I have a rich and noble history. RC: American is still presently in two wars, which the President is close to ending. He will be known for taking down Bin Lin-

den and Gaddafi filling President Bush mandate to “Get Even” with a growing hatred of what happen on the 911 day. What is your take on war? King: As I have walked among the desperate, rejected and angry young men I have told (Continued on page 14)

them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they asked — and rightly so — what about Vietnam (Iraq)? They asked if our own nation wasn't sing massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today — my own government. …Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars... Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time; ... Mankind must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.... Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.

R.C. This year as years before, police have been found not guilty of wrongful deaths. Just in the case of your assignation riots happen, with the theme for justice. But riots happen not just in America for justice. As a result the governments do address some actions. Can’t you see some benefit from riots? King: The riot is the language of the unheard...I want to stress this. The futility of violence in the struggle for racial justice has been tragically etched in all the recent Negro riots. Yesterday, I tried to analyze the riots and deal with their causes. Today I want to give the other side. There is certainly something painfully sad about a riot. One sees screaming youngsters and angry adults fighting hopelessly and aimlessly against impossible odds. And deep down within them, you can see a desire for self-destruction, a kind of suicidal longing. Occasionally Negroes contend that the 1965 Watts riot and the other riots in various cities represented effective civil rights action. But those who express this view always end up with stumbling words when asked what concrete gains have been won as a result. At best, the riots have produced a little additional anti-poverty money allotted by frightened government officials and a few water sprinklers to cool the children of the ghettos. It is something like improving the food in the prison while the people remain securely incarcerated behind bars. This is leading a few extremists today to advocate for Negroes the same destructive and conscienceless power that they have justly abhorred in whites. It is precisely this collision of immoral power

with powerless morality which constitutes the major crisis of our times.

King: Recently, the press has been filled

with reports of sightings of flying saucers. While we need not give credence to these R.C. There is this concern of ‘Black on stories, they allow our imagination to specuBlack crime’ and Blacks are just pone to late on how visitors from outer space would judge us. I am afraid they would be stupefied at our conduct. They would observe that for death planning we spend billions to create engines and strategies for war. They would also observe that we spend millions to prevent death by disease and other causes. Finally they would observe that we spend paltry sums for population planning, even though its spontaneous growth is an urgent threat to life on our planet. Our visitors from outer space could be forgiven if they reported home that our planet is inhabited by a race of insane men whose future is bleak and crime more than others. Is there a justi- uncertain.

fication for it? King: It is incontestable and deplorable that Negroes have committed crimes; but they are derivative crimes. They are born of the greater crimes of the white society. ...Let us therefore continue our triumphal march to the realization of the American dream…. for all of us today, the battle is in our hands... The road ahead is not altogether a smooth one. There are no broad highways that lead us easily and inevitably to quick solutions... We are still in for the season of suffering... How long? Not long. Because no lie can live forever... our God is marching on.

R.C. A little spin here on UFO. Do you think they are real?

R.C. I must ask you this. It is somewhat odd. But you died as a young man. Do you regret it? King: I never will forget one night very late. It was around midnight... the telephone started ringing and I picked it up. On the other end was an ugly voice. That voice said to me, in substance, "Nigger, we are tired of you and your mess now. And if you aren't out of this town in three days, we're going to blow your brains out and blow up your house." I’d heard these things before, but for some reason that night it got to me. ...But if physical death is the price that a man must pay to free his children and his white brethren from a permanent death of the spirit, then nothing could be more redemptive. This is the type of soul force that I am convinced will triumph over the physical force of the oppressor. R.C. For the most part there will be no other you. So what can others do? King: You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant. R. C. I recall the day you were killed.

While I was a paperboy one night delivering papers on the southside of Chicago I looked to the west and notice an orange glow. There was a riot going on. As I got home, I ask my mother, ‘What is going on?’ Whatever her answer was, my thoughts were, when I grow, I will not have to deal with all this because all the racist white people will be dead. But yet, still today the same issues.

King: I know you are asking today, "How long will it take?" Somebody's asking, "How long will prejudice blind the visions of men, darken their understanding, and drive bright-eyed wisdom from her sacred throne?" Somebody's asking, "When will wounded justice, lying prostrate on the streets of Selma and Birmingham and communities all over the South, be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men?" Somebody's asking, "When will the radiant star of hope be plunged against the nocturnal bosom of this lonely night, plucked from weary souls with chains of fear and the manacles of death? How long will jus-

tice be crucified, and truth bear it?" I come to say to you this afternoon, however difficult the moment, however frustrating the hour, it will not be long, because "truth crushed to earth will rise again." How long? Not long, because "no lie can live forever." How long? Not long, because "you shall reap what you sow." How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. R.C. Thank you Dr. King for your time again.

CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan issued a statement of condolences, deep respect and appreciation for the passing of two spiritual giants who had an incredible international impact and deep roots in the city of Chicago. The late Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon, who founded Christ Universal Temple, and the Honorable Rahbee Ben Ammi, founder of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, The Nation of Islam would like to express “our deepest sympathy and profound sadness on the passing of these two great spiritual giants,” said Min. Farrakhan in a Jan. 5 statement published in The Final Call newspaper. “The prophets of God are never spoken of as being dead, neither are the righteous. The Holy Qur’an says speak not of those who die or are slain in the way of God as dead, they are alive but you understand or perceive not. The Rev. Dr. Johnnie Coleman and Rahbee Ben Ammi spent their lives teaching and striving to live the principles that they taught. This is called living and dying in the way of God. How can they be dead when the principles that they taught are alive and we who structure our lives on these immutable principles are alive in them and they in us?” the Minister said. “Now we who are left behind must recommit our lives to these

principles and never deviate or tolerate deviation from these principles. The Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon raised a community in dignity and self-respect, bathed in Christ Consciousness. Rahbee Ben Ammi did the same,” said Min. Farrakhan, who

enjoyed a long relationship with both of these religious leaders. “May Allah (God) bless, guide and protect these communities. May Allah (God) bless, guide and protect those who carry these communities on in the absence of their great teachers. May Allah (God) give us the patience to hold on through the dark hour for surely the dawn approaches,” he added. See page 23 for the full statement from Min. Farrakhan. The Rev. Dr. Colemon passed Dec. 23 after a long illness. She was 94. Christ Universal Temple is an iconic place of worship on the city’s South Side, and Dr. Colemon was also an iconic figure within the faith community. Her funeral service was

held Jan. 5 in Chicago. She celebrated 50 years of building and teaching in 2006, the year she retired as senior minister of Christ Universal Temple. During her tenure, she built five structures, including three churches and two institutions of learning. She also constructed a luxury banquet hall and restaurant in service to a community that had little access to a high end dining facility. Rahbee Ben Ammi Ben Israel passed Dec. 27 at the age of 75. His group has been lauded for its work and sacrifice over nearly five decades since the first Black Hebrews left the United States and eventually emigrated to Israel. Their headquarters is in the city of Dimona. The spiritual leader often described a vision he received in February of 1966 in Chicago, saying it was time for the children of Israel, Black people in America, to return to their place of origin. In 1967, he inspired 400 to make an exodus out of America, first settling in Liberia for two and a half years, then settling in Dimona, Israel in 1969. The group fought for legal and cultural rights while building schools, businesses and health care systems to serve their needs. In 1990, many of the obstacles related to residency were removed as they were granted temporary residency status. Permanent residency status was given by Israel’s Ministry of Interior in 2003.

"HELP SEL GET THE HELL AWAY FROM YOUR PLACE OF WORSHIP" is one of the several tactics in Mr. Dunlap's WAR ON FILTH AND FEAR CAMPAIGN has in his arsenal of clean tricks.

M

r. Dunlap has documented what he correctly and unapologetic ally calls "Hell": ruthless, diabolical, damning hell, as it is manifested in debilitating trash and debris. This substance of social garbage, which is collected next to our places of worship, across the from our places of worship, down the street from our places of worship and, to often, around the corner from our places of worship is not in keeping with a Godly environment. He speaks specifically to the heathenish physical presence up and down the alleys from our places of worship. Cleaning up is one of the many tools/weapons we can use in tandem or independently to build, construct, control our environment and have

more influence over our destiny. Cleaning up encourages a respected understanding of security and influence. Mr. Dunlap believes that comprehensive, sustained and transformational cleaning up efforts result in the purging of that which is causing a spiritual cancer, and is manifested in the most fundamental reality: (Martin Luther King, Jr. Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincer e ignorance and conscientious stupidity)

Mr. Dunlap refers to Filth and Fear as the 'Twin Demons' whose ultimate goal is to contribute to the lack of self knowledge, disfigured selfrespect and twisted selfesteem. Filth and fear has an empirical history of destroying faith, hope and will. After living in unbridled filth, on multi-levels, filth has the propensity to take up residence you, your spirit, character and conduct. The Twin Demons don't have the same counter productive effect on everybody. The simplest analysis of economic returns on the dollar clearly states that methodically cleaning up with creative monitoring techniques makes absolute good sense (cents). There is a bucket load of concerns, issues and problems facing all of us. I'm praying for anointed vision and the courage to address those life suppressing obstacles. Mr. Dunlap's purpose and passion is focused on cleaning up from the inside out, which is the spiritual core of his mission. His platform is supported by recognized sources that cleaning up reduces crime, encourages economic development, educational advancement, improved self-respect and esteem, stable property values. lowers stress and much more. "There are 1500 plus vacant lots

in North Lawndale that are owned by the City of Chicago," states Mr. Dunlap. "They mostly stay in deplorable condition year round. Even when the lots are cut, it is done in a very uncaring, disrespectful way: what ever is on the lot, stays on the lot and gets cut up along with the three to four feet weeds. That's always a gruesome site. In very graphic terms, Mr. Dunlap cunningly claims that too many garbage laden, polluted lots look like the Devil's mama has had an abortion on them. Mr. Dunlap's direct appeal to Faith Leaders and candidates for office is that he hopes they are sold on Sel's offer to help them and their

not spend their entire allotments, as they didn’t return phone calls or could not be reached for comment. Here’s a snapshot of how the money was spent last year (with more details at the end of this story):

 The 24thWard had a balance of $52,500. There were no street or alley repairs — a little more than $1.2 million went to fixing street lighting throughout the ward. The 28th Ward had a $30,000 balance. Moore Park received $1 million, with street resurfacing taking the next largest chunk at $200,000-plus. 

Chicago Launches Capital Access Center Pilot Program to Help Small Businesses Access Loans The City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), in partnership with Accion Chicago and World Business Chicago, today launched Capital Access Centers (CACs), a six-month pilot program that will help small businesses access the capital needed for growth. The Capital Access Centers will primarily work with small businesses seeking loans between $25,000 and $250,000. Two years ago Mayor Emanuel launched the Chicago Microlending Institute to help businesses access loans up to $25,000. Capital Access Centers will help address the capital need for small businesses at the next stage in their growth. The Program will launch with three agencies: the Chatham Business Association, The Resurrection Project, and The Greater Englewood Community Development Corporation. The agencies are in areas that are historically underrepresented by business borrowers, but they will not be limited by the geography of their service area and will be able to receive and manage referrals that cover the entire City. On his radio show Tuesday, Limbaugh was reacting to a story that came from the leaked Sony emails ... saying Idris Elba, star of "Luther" and "The Wire," should take over the iconic part from Daniel Craig. But Limbaugh feels that Elba (who he describes as "African-English," since Elba is a Brit) is not right for the role because Bond was created as a white guy and should stay that way. Limbaugh said, "Now Sony is suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton rather than a white from Scotland. (lets call him Dr. Wilson) and Rahm Emanuel A.K.A.. George H. W. Bush, well then obviously Perot would, as a result, suck up the Bush vote and result in Clinton winning the Mayoral election. But the U.S. Presidential election of 1992 was not a run-off election. A run-off, by its very nature, is designed to eliminate the split vote. The top two candidates, only, face up against one another in that run-off. Ergo, Q.E.D., the vote in this election cannot be split. The incumbent has, by default,

the vast majority of the 2011 election’s just over half a million votes. Nobody in this race, but nobody, has the funding to outspend the incumbent. Wilson’s cool million can’t outspend Rahm’s seven million. The good news is, only approximately half a million voters turned out in the last election, in a district with 1.3 million voters registered. In order to challenge the incumbent, and win, the objective must be: bring the disillusioned and disenfranchised, voters, the first-time-voters. Get all 1.3 million + first-time-voters to vote. Then Rahm won’t win. Only the incumbent benefits from the fallacious, ridiculous and oh, did I say, untrue, “split vote” myth. So why are some of the incumbent’s challengers, who clearly are not unintelligent, evangelizing this fable? Are they batting on behalf of their most powerful opponent? There are those who say, the fifth candidate, William Dock Walls, is a perennial candidate. They say this as though it offered some logical suggestion as to why he should not be taken seriously in the race. By this logic Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have become President. Nor Abraham Lincoln. What does the word perennial mean? Since when does the most experienced candidate on the ballot with the most robust platform, having devoted years to its development, garnering the required number of signatures, several times, and having survived the brutal challenge process, several

times, which over half of the candidates—each of those times— could not do. Does surviving Chicago’s brutal elimination process multiple times—when hardly anybody could do it once, even— somehow make William Dock Walls less viable, as a candidate? Think about it. This crowd-think mentality imposed, obviously, by media goons, does not make an iota of logical sense. Wall’s platforms for crime, police brutality, economic development, minority inclusiveness, small and medium local business development, and not to forget a detailed plan on how to get women reenfranchised (the reason I signed on to support the Walls campaign in 2011), well, you look at his platform and decide. You listen to his answers to the debate questions. You watch him wipe the floor with his opponents. I have studied his platform. I understand why he hasn’t been included in the debates—and it isn’t because he isn’t a viable candidate. Could William Dock Walls, the underdog who is seldom included in the debates, win the election if the public understood his platform? I don’t know but I do know this: After the 2011 debates, Rahm Emanuel implemented Mr. Walls’ policies instead of his own more than just once or twice. Rahm’s other challengers have nothing to fear from Mr. Walls—for them including him is a win/win as they will benefit from the count of their combined votes reaching 50%, resulting in a run-off, if he is included, whereas a run-off will be more unlikely if he is excluded. If any challenger of the incumbent in this race truly want to win, and are not just serving as a muppet pretender, they would welcome all candidates to the forum for this reason. Debate sponsors who are interested in advocacy by a mayor who gets their issues, truly, should, and I believe will, welcome all five candidates to their forums. What does it take, really, to defeat the incumbent in a Chicago Mayoral race?

In 1961 Dr. Webb Evans organized the United American Progress Association; the purpose was to get more Blacks to prepare and go into business and get more people to spend their money with Black owned businesses. Today at 100 + years old he stays busy trying to get people to invest their money in the Black community to build more businesses to create more jobs for Blacks. You may see him anytime in a protest march trying to make others give us jobs we are entitled to. He started marching with A. Phillip Randolp. He was with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington D.C. in 1963 and with him in other places. He has also marched with Lu Palmer, Rev. Jessie Jackson, Eddie Read and others. To continue his Legacy of Promoting & Supporting Black Business in Chicago, we have formed a committee to raise funds to purchase and dedicate a block of land in his honor, that’s for sale on the north side of 79th St. between Hermitage and Paulina and name it: "The Dr. Webb Evans Center for Economic Change ." The name of this committee is the “Capital Development Fund Committee," it consist of members from the United American Progress Association and the Temple of Mercy Association. County to auction off property for revenue. From an old piano to a pair of meat slicers, Cook County is pursuing new ways to generate revenue by selling obsolete and occasionally odd property via an online auction site. “These items are helping the county bring in money instead of collecting dust in a warehouse,” Preckwinkle said. “By auctioning unused property, we are reducing waste, creating new revenue and encouraging fiscal responsibility. We will continue pushing for innovative ways to create revenue without further burdening Cook County taxpayers.” Whether it’s smaller items like nursery chairs or bigticket items like dump trucks, auctioning surplus equipment provides new funds and allows the County to maximize available storage space. Managed by the Office of

the Chief Procurement Officer and populated with items identified by the County’s Bureau of Administration and Sheriff’s Office, the online auction sells antiquated and underutilized assets to national and international marketplaces. In three months, the County has already auctioned off nearly $100,000 of property. The County has had a salvage division for some time which previously focused on recycling, re-use or disposal of equipment and materials no longer needed by different County departments. Approximately two years ago, the Preckwinkle administration began looking into the idea of selling, through auction, surplus equipment and material. Much of the equipment and material was stored in the County’s warehouse or, in the case of vehicles, was sitting unused in garages or maintenance yards throughout the County. Communications were then sent to County departments to identify surplus property for the auction.

VROOM! VROOM! In My Bedroom, Author Eva Cole has harnessed

the shimmering power of dreams and a yearning for adventure in creating a magnificent world and unforgettable characters sure to delight generations of young readers. But as with most journeys worth telling, Eva’s path from there to here is a story all of its own. Born and raised in Urbandale, Iowa, Eva spent the latter part of her childhood in Dayton, Ohio, being raised by her Uncle Tim and Aunt Ruby, and mentored by their nine sons. Eva’s cousins Coach Johnnie Cole, Coach Lawrence Cole and Pastor Trent Cole Sr. continue to mentor her today. The Cole family has a long history of being involved in education, athletics and coaching - something that Eva took to heart. “I enjoyed coaching young girls in basket-

Never one to ignore a mentor, Eva took up the mantle and got to work. In October 2014 she published her first book. Within the first week of the books debut it received a 5 Star rating on Amazon. “’I Heard a Vroom! Vroom! In My Bedroom’ was inspired by the young girls I’ve had a chance to mentor and by all the people in my life who have mentored me, and there have been plenty. In my book, Little Ted learns the benefits of having a mentor in his dream. Hot Rod Fred helps little Ted gain confidence in reaching for his dreams and never giving up,” said Eva. Even with all this momentum, impressive list of fantastic reviews for her book, and including, a sterling endorsement from Louis D’Esposito, co-President at Marvel Studios, Eva has had to battle through incredible adversity for years. Eva has always been reluctant to discuss her fight with a brain tumor first diagnosed in the late 90s, operated on in 2007, and needing another operation planned a few months down the road. Up until this time, only a handful of her closest friends and family know about her condition. “The adversity is not me, it’s the medical condition,” Eva said. “I have simply tried to deal with it with as much courage and grace that I can. I am uplifted by my faith and by the prayers and support of my loved ones. I myself try not to dwell on it. I don’t want pity or people feeling sorry for me. I just try to do what I need to do. Even though I have my good and bad days, I continue to solider on. I push myself every day to never give up. I keep on going, going and going like the bunny in the Energizer battery commercials. I just want people to know that you can still make your dreams come true no matter what adversity or obstacle you are going through. Fight and never give up! If you give up, you will never

Never give up! Never give up on your dreams! Murder to Excellence: Growth and Development for the Millennial Generation The Autobiography of Wallace “Gator” Bradley Book Review By Yakira Levi The best-selling book Murder to Excellence: Growth and Development for the Millennial Generation is an autobiography of Wallace “Gator” Bradley, the well known gang mediator for United In Peace, Inc. but this book reveals so much more than your typical autobiographical story. The forward is written by philosopher Dr. Cornel West. Blurbs are from the Grammy award winning recording artist Lupe Fiasco, Grammy award winning songwriter Rhymefest, the great Reverend Al Sharpton, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, former Executive Director of the N.A.A.C.P. This book includes over 20 tributes by grassroots leaders from around the country, who all sing the praises of Wallace “Gator” Bradley; while validating and accrediting his works as a man, politician, civil-rights activist, and peace keeper. Written and published by Wallace “Gator” Bradley and Safiya D. Hoskins, Ph.D., the book moves the reader through real accounts of “Gator’s” life story - from prison to politics; while leading one to envision himself in the position to grow and develop past his current means, and into a new state of mind that empowers the self to accomplish things like: removing the shackles of mental slavery, creating positive social change in the community, voting, and helping those with similar political agendas, get into public office. Mr. Bradley shows people that they can change policy and laws – through politics. Despite all that he has accomplished locally, nationally, and Internationally, Wallace “Gator” Bradley’s book present’s him as a humble man, supported by the people he serves. Murder to Excellence: Growth and Development for the Millennial Generation gives acknowledgements and honorable mentions to “Gator’s” family, colleagues and mentors, including Mr. Larry Hoover, founder of the Gangster Disciple Nation (now modified into a movement of Growth and Development removed from gang-banging). The book also includes “21 from the [G.D.] Blueprint” By Rod Emery.

I read this book in two sittings. The political stories had me on edge. It’s amazing how Wallace “Gator” Bradley seamlessly transitions between stories of the life of a gang-banger, to visiting the White House to meet in the Oval office with (then President) Bill Clinton. His book has reminded me that a person supported by the right people, sharing the same agenda, can move mountains; but only if willing to do the work. “Gator” truly does the work! In the book, Wallace “Gator” Bradley speaks all about the occupations of both his mother and father, and how his parents affected his decisions in life. He also speaks about being a “Peace Enforcer” under the direction of Mr. Larry Hoover. The book contains some typos that can be overlooked, due to the heart and nature of the story at hand; but overall, Murder to Excellence: Growth and Development for the Millennial Generation is a great read! I would recommend this book to the hip-hop generation, to people who are interested in politics, to urban people who have given up on the political voting system, and to people of poverty who are seeking ways to ascend to excellence.

Parkway youth. On that day the youth enjoyed a thanksgiving meal and engaged in their usual activities of exercise, computer literacy, assistance with homework and just plain having fun.Arletha has been a long time affiliate of HoodHopeMovement and introduced me to officer Maddox who accepted us wholeheartedly and agreed to partner with HoodHope in future endeavors to provide services for the youth. The Sun Times article makes mention of the fact that no weapons were recovered in certain murder cases, but dares not mention where these weapons could have originated from? Basically not pointing out a cause of this “most dangerous block” effect. Furthermore the Times did not offer any solutions other than police involvement which is obviously not the solution. Especially given now that the people have a sour attitude toward authorities in wake of the Mike Brown and Eric Garner decision. I spoke with several people who reside in Parkway like Frank and Linda whom have relatives that have been there for years and disagree with the newspapers take on their residence. “Our people are not savages” says Linda, and also went on to claim that the police harass the people. Frank stated that the article appeared to be related to the gentrification taking place in the Woodlawn and Englewood communities, in which outsiders are buying up the land rebuilding and relocating. Such statements as” most dangerous block” gives ammunition to those trying to close down such places and also intensifies already uneasy relations with the authorities. This property is located directly next door to New Beginnings church where Pastor Corey Brooks has launched Project Hood in efforts to quell some of the madness ongoing in the black community. I have personally spoke with him on several occasions and he has said he would assist HoodHope in furthering the cause of mentoring the youth and keeping them safe. But has yet to act on these promises. What I see in Parkway is a people who need to unify and organize economically to purchase realestate and businesses in their neighborhood in order to grow and become self-sufficient see children that deserve a bright future The real danger lies in us not supporting each other and not helping keep existing businesses and programs which cater to our needs thriving while opening more. Celebrities such as Chief Keef and Lil Durk that shout out these communities in their songs because they are from there or have frequented the area should give back “they do not come around no more “ in reference to local celeberties, said Frank. I intend to do a follow up to this article so stay tuned..

Real Deep Associate Publisher Hip Hop On Halloween the day of demons the Chicago Sun Times released an article depicting yet another black community as having the most dangerous block in Chicago. This article begins by describing our community as “notorious”. One of the reasons I was disappointed with the article and decided to rebuttal it is because too often stories are told about us and our communities and we have no say in them. What we are discussing here is a neighborhood full of black people who have been faced with some challenging issues and forced to rely on rental assistance. Which is not surprising based on the economy and the systematic design of bias hiring practices. What we have here is a community of men women and children who have dreams and aspirations. Although Parkway Gardens referred to by some as “o” block is privately owned, the system is in play which was the basis for the “projects” which was just that, a project. A situation of stacking people who do not have much on top of each other literally. Some had a little more than others, which commonly bred an imbalance and longing for better living conditions. The conditions were not as severe until the implementation of all of the weaponry and narcotics in not only the housing complexes in Chicago Illinois, But in every black community in the United States. I frequent

Parkway Gardens as well as other so called dangerous inner city communities and I do not notice any gun shops, and even if there were we do not possess the proper credentials to obtain artillery more often than not. With that said it is interesting that since September 11-2001 the boarder has been shut down but there is a constant influx of drugs not even grown or manufactured in the united states that infiltrate the black communities all over the country on a daily basis. A copy of this article is being forwarded to the sun times in hopes that they would address why nothing positive was stated with regard to the residents of Parkway? For example there is a youth program which functions out of Parkway Gardens, there are many people there that rise every morning to go to work and ensure that their children are in the classroom. Queen Arletha, a powerful outspoken voice in the community, also a member of HoodHopeMovement and founder of M.O.D.E (Mothers On Duty Everyday) explains that there are positive people in the Gardens that help maintain a peaceful environment, also noting that she even allows children to enter her home in order to be nourished and mentored. I personally visited The Gardens on November 25th and spoke with officer Maddox who runs a youth program located in the center of Parkway.Arletha often volunteers along with others whom assist in the care of (Continued on page 22)

There is a clear cut choice in the 20th Ward. We have a candidate who has not helped the community but voted for red light cameras, voted to close the schools and voted with the mayor almost 100% of the time. Another candidate running is an undercover Republican who supported Republican Oberweis against Democratic Dick Durbin. Kevin Bailey is the only candidate who listening to the community and fighting social change and social justice.
