For the first time in state history, thousands of Chicago 17 -year olds will be eligible to vote as they were able to do in the Primary Election of 2012. “We’re proud to have so many young people who can make history this election,” said Langdon D. Neal, Chairman of the Chicago Election Board. “Thanks to a new law, this will mark the second time that 17-year-olds will be able to vote since the Primary Election of 2012, if they will turn 18 by the Feburary 24 Election. The idea of this law is to let those who will be 18 have the power to help decide which candidates will be on the fall ballots.” Since the law took effect the Chicago Election Board has worked with numerous schools and civic organizations to register 9,044 young voters, including: 3,444 who will be 17 at the Primary but 18 by the General Election; 4,641; 18-year-olds; and, 959, 19 -Year olds.

New Accuser Emerges as Cosby cancels shows in Boston BOSTON (AP) - A former fashion model and actress who appeared on one episode of "The Cosby Show" in 1987 is the latest of several women to accuse Bill Cosby of making unwanted sexual advances toward them. Helen Gumpel, formerly known as Helen Selby, said early February that Cosby made sexual advances and lewd gestures toward her while she was on the set of the show. She said she was called to the show's set for what she thought was another audition shortly after filming the one episode. She said she was brought to Cosby's dressing room and Cosby had her sit on a couch and handed her a drink. She said Cosby then stood in front of her with his crotch in her face. "I never thought of myself as a victim because I refused his advances," Gumpel said. "But my career was a victim." A Cosby spokesman did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. The 77-year-old entertainer faces sexual assault accusations from at least 15 women. He denies the allegations and has never been charged with a crime. Gumpel, who lives in Connecticut with her husband, made the allegations at a news conference she held at a downtown Boston hotel hours after Cosby canceled back-to-back comedy shows scheduled that evening at the nearby Wilbur Theater. Demonstrators had threatened to protest outside the theater. Cosby, who has a home in western Massachusetts, told the Boston Globe he canceled the shows because of impending "treacherous" weather.

CHICAGO WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO MAKING HOAX DISTRESS CALL, A Chicago woman pleaded guilty today to a federal crime for making a false report two years ago that a person had fallen into Lake Michigan and was in distress, causing the United States Coast Guard and other first responders to launch a dangerous search and rescue operation that cost the Coast Guard $13,613. LEONA CHEWNING, 24, was charged earlier this month with one count of communicating a false distress message to the Coast Guard. She pleaded guilty today at her arraignment before U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle in Federal Court in Chicago. In pleading guilty, Chewning admitted that she knowingly and willfully communicated a false distress message to the Coast Guard resulting in a life-saving attempt when no help was needed. “Hoax rescue calls are costly and risky for the responding agencies and personnel who put their own lives on the line in an effort to save others,” said Zachary T. Fardon, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. “We will prosecute those who needlessly make false rescue reports and hold them accountable for their crime,” Mr. Fardon said.

a wave of social movements, AfricanAmerican activism transformed race relations, challenged American foreign policy, and became the American conscience on human rights.

To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents pro-

American life, history, and culture have become major forces in the United States and the world. In 1915, few could have imagined that African Americans in music, art, and literature would become appreciated by the global community. Fewer still could have predicted the prominence achieved by African Americans, as well as other people of African descent, in shaping world politics, war, and diplomacy. Indeed, it was nearly universally believed that Africans and people of African descent had played no role in the unfolding of history and were a threat to American civilization itself. A century later, few can deny the centrality of African Americans in the making of American history.

This transformation is the result of effort, not chance. Confident that their struggles mattered in human history, black scholars, artists, athletes, and leaders self-consciously used their talents to change how the world viewed African Americans. The New Negro of the post-World War I era made modernity their own and gave the world a cornucopia of cultural gifts, including jazz, poetry based on the black vernacular, and an appreciation of African art. African American athletes dominated individual and team sports transforming baseball, track-and-field, football, boxing, and basketball. In

Racially Profiled Youth File Lawsuit Against City of Chicago for False Arrest Community Groups Stand in Support Demanding Equal Treatment and Protection of Constitutional Rights for All Grassroots Collaborative held a press conference announcing a civil rights lawsuit against Chicago and the Police Officers responsible for the false arrest of Felipe Hernandez and Kevin Tapia. On March 25th, 2014, door knocking to inform residents about the March 31st deadline for the Affordable Care Act, they were stopped by Chicago Police Department officers, detained, searched multiple times, and questioned. Complying fully, providing their supervisor’s name and contact information, they were arrested, charged with unlawful solicitation of business, detained for several hours, released and charges were later dropped. “I feared I would have a criminal record that could prevent working, continuing education and becoming a U.S. citizen,” stated Kevin Tapia. “Kevin and Felipe’s arrests were unjustifiable,” said Joey Mogul, a lawyer with the People’s Law Office. “They were racially profiled and arrested on a bogus charge, punished while exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech. Such pervasive discrimination threatens political participation ..[and] endangers the wellbeing of young people of color across the city of Chicago.” The lawsuit was filed a few weeks before the Chicago Municipal elections on February 24th, 2 0 1 5 . “Door knocking campaigns play an important role in civic engage-

ment work of many organizations. It’s the right and duty of citizens of a democracy to talk to our neighbors and fellow residents. It’s our hope that many will be exercising that right in the next few weeks. We are very pleased that Kevin and Felipe have decided to file this lawsuit, and stand with them in support of equal treatment and protection of all of our constitutional rights,” said Amisha Patel, Executive Director of Grassroots Collaborative. “I don’t want what happened to me to happen to other youth trying to exercise their constitutional right to free speech; mere existence should not be deemed suspicious or criminal. Nobody should fear getting arrested for talking with other residents about issues they care about,” said Felipe Hernandez to a crowd of community supporters. In 2012, Black and Latino youth aged 17 and under were the target of 96% of CPD arrests..Black youth 10 times more likely, Latino youth twice as likely as their white peers to be arrested. Timmy Rose of We Charge Genocide stated, “We believe Felipe and Kevin’s arrests are evidence of a larger pattern designed to further silence and criminalize black and brown youth. We believe it is our duty to stand in solidarity, to speak out against these cases and demand an end to the culture of impunity and abuse of power.” Kevin Tapia and Felipe Hernandez look forward to their day in court.

The Black press sprang into life in the early 1800's, as a vehicle for abolitionist thinkers like Frederick Douglass, the slave insurrectionist John Brown and the anti-lynching campaigner Ida B. Wells. The Chicago Defender, founded in 1905, was the most storied and historically the most successful as well. In the South, the Pullman porters who distributed the paper from their trains -- and the newsboys who dared sell it -risked being lynched. Read aloud in churches and held on reserve at barber shops. , The Defender reached a million readers a week at the peak of its influence early in the century. Editorials urging Negroes to abandon the Jim Crow South sparked the Great Migration, which more than doubled Chicago's black population, from 44,000 in 1910 to 109,000 just 10 years later. The paper's influence generated outrage Robert Sengstacke Abbott, among Southerners and deep suspicion John Sengstacke in Washington. During both World Wars, Federal officials threatened to jail the Negro press barons for sedition. At issue were fiery editorials pointing out that Negroes were risking their lives abroad for freedoms they did not enjoy at Publishers Note: Havhome. ing the honor to know John Sengstacke and Lu When Hollywood portrayed Negroes almost exclusively as fat black mammies or shuffling Palmer, I have had the honor to consult with both of sambos, The Defender and its cousins offered a textured portrait of Bronzeville, high and low. my mentors. The Chicago Defender leadthe way as an African American newspaper. No institution worked harder for desegregation -- or suffered more gravely when it arrived -than the 300 or so newspapers that made up the Negro press. Throughout the first half of the century, legendary papers like The Chicago Defender, The Pittsburgh Courier and The Baltimore Afro-American had campaigned against discrimination in housing, in the military and in public accommodations. But with the civil rights movement finally under way - and white papers belatedly interested in Negro news -black readers slipped steadily away, leaving the Negro press to wither.. John Sengstacke inherited The Defender from his uncle, Robert Sengstacke Abbott, who had arrived penniless in Chicago at the turn of the century but soon became one of America's first Negro millionaires. Abbott learned early that his millions made him more vulnerable, not less. The lesson was underscored when a Chicago Rolls-Royce dealer declined to sell him a car, reportedly because the company felt black ownership would devalue the brand. A white friend purchased the car and transferred title to Abbott. Sengstacke spent much of his childhood at Abbott's knee, and learned his lessons well. John H. Sengstacke, an immensely powerful but almost reclusive man who led The Chicago Defender for nearly 60 years, until his death. For all of his power and exploits, the public record suggests that he barely existed. But Sengstacke was not just a publisher; he was a national power center. John Sengstacke born1912 was the visionary publisher of The Chicago Daily Defender. Sengstacke bedeviled Roosevelt and Truman and had access to the White House until his death 1997. But he avoided publicity, preferring to let the clout of his paper do the talking. When people think of the black press, they generally summon up the journalism of self-esteem practiced in magazines like Ebony and Jet. Instead of workaday news, these magazines trumpet the accomplishments of the black middle class, which until recently was virtually invisible in mainstream media. Beyond these magazines lies a network of about 200 struggling weekly newspapers with small circulations and almost no national profile. But the ancestral papers that preceded them had many times their influence -- and penetrated just about every black household in the country. The Defender was bankrupt when Sengstacke took control after Abbott's death in 1940, but he nursed it back to profitability -then transformed it from a weekly into a daily, making it one of the few black dailies in the country, along with The Atlanta Daily World. In 1940 he formed the Negro Newspaper Publishers Association and served five three-year (Continued on page 19)

On receiving the award Kyles graciously noted the bittersweet moment, while eloquently recalling his story of anguish and the need for the vital work of Gift of Hope. Quinn Kyles, the son of Theresa Cropper and Dwain Kyles, died December 22, 2014 in a car accident, twenty-three years after receiving a heart transplant on Decem-

Quinn, who was born on December 2, 1991, was diagnosed in the womb with a congential heart disease that was not compatible with life outside the womb, if he did not receive heart transplantation. Even though Quinn’s parents were successful attorney’s at the time of their son’s birth, the heart-rending news, and the astronomical medical expenses that were being projected soon became a burden. Their dilemma was further compacted when the Kyles’ insurance company refused to pick up the over $300,000 costs. Their burden became a steep mountain that the parents would ultimately find a to climb. National attention was brought to the Kyles’ plight with the help of family, friends, members of the community, and music legend Stevie Wonder, who had agreed to perform a concert at the Chicago Theatre. The event which was hastily planned was sold-out in 19 days, and also included performances by the Emotions, Eric Gable and R&B group Jodeci, with actor Levar Burton has host. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's proposal to use parkland as a site for Barack Obama's presidential library received a boost with approval from the Chicago Park District. The University of Chicago's bid for the library depends on using land in either Jackson Park or Washington Park on the city's South Side. The Chicago Park District voted unanimously Wednesday to transfer 20 acres in either park to the city for the library. The proposed use of park land has generated opposition due to fears it could open the door for more land acquisitions that could chop away at park district land.On January 14th, Alderman Pat Dowell (3) co-hosted a meeting on the proposed Washington Park site for the Barack Obama Presidential Library. With hundreds of residents in attendance, the University of Chicago and its partners outlined a clear proposal for the project, which was followed by an informative question and answer session. As one of the Aldermen whose ward would be directly affected by the construction of the library, Al-

This is a once-in-a -lifetime opportunity to further economic development through a parkpositive, educational institution. The decision where to build the library belongs solely to President Obama, the First Lady and their foundation. The proposed site in the Washington Park neighborhood would extend from 54th St. to Gar-

field, from King Dr. to Prairie Avenue plus an additional 22 acres in the park starting east of King Drive and going to Ellsworth Dr., between 51st St. and 55th St. That means there are no eminent domain plans, and no homeowners, condo owners, churches or business would be displaced for the construction of the library.

Kyles takes solace in the fact that his son Quinn was able to live a full and fruitful life with the help of Gift of Hope, and especially the tireless work of Jack Lynch. At the time, Lynch tracked the new parents down when he learned of their situation, and offered them invaluable advice and support. “We

knew nothing about organ donation,” Kyles said. “Jack Lynch was masterful in helping us learn what we needed to know very quickly, by letting us know what we were facing.” Masterful efforts that have warranted eternal gratitude and further highlighting the importance of organ donation. At the dawn of these strivings and at all points along the road, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has played a vital role. In honor of this milestone, ASALH has selected “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture” as the 2015 National Black History theme.

The focus will still be on Democracy in Action: Getting Out the Vote, so we look forward to a substantive and actionable discussion around efforts to get our community out to vote in large numbers.

Chicago Street Journal outside the spheres of influence. We should have learned enough from jumping on the political giant’s bandwagon. At the end of the day the machine, oppression and discrimination exists where there is tolerance for it. Anybody that doesn’t have a million dollars should have a vested interest in this election, grabbing neighbors, cats and babies to vote. My nieces, nephews and sisters deserve the opportunity to make something of themselves and to be able to afford the city they grew up in. Chicago is a beautiful city with vast resources, there’s no reason we can’t share the wealth.

Keeshana Meehan Freelance Journalist ost of the journalistic community is unfamiliar with me, so I think it only proper I introduce myself. I graduated from UIUC in 2007 with a major in Rhetoric concentration in creative writing. It’s no secret that Chicago has endured extreme hardship under Rahm Emanuel’s Administration. From red-lights to school closures the people of this city certainly feel the brunt from carrying the weight of Chicago; a weight that equates to nearly $8 million in revenue for Chicagoans. Most of the people in the City of Chicago would buck their eyes at 8 million dollars!! Which is exactly what I did, after receiving several phone calls and emails from the William “Dock” Walls For Mayor campaign stating they’re being discriminated against by Public Channel 11… yes, that’s right PBS. Now, I know some of you may wonder why you should care about a “perennial candidate” as I’ve heard it called. For the same reason you get upset about “perennial killings” #blacklivesmatter. A representative of the Walls campaign, Marcus Lewis stated, “I’d been given the charge to ensure Mr. Walls has presence on the televised debates, we were successful in getting him on ABC and others, however when we reached out to WTTW in reference to the Feb 4th Forum, we were told by Mary Field unlike Willie Wilson, we didn’t have a million dollars” I couldn’t believe my ears, after about 2 days I was able to reach WTTW’s executive producer, I recorded our conversation as most journalist do, to my surprise she cooperated quite well, having a conversation for nearly five minutes or so. Why should you care about this topic? You pay taxes. Its just that simple, its like being discriminated against in your own restaurant. You paid for that and you’ve invested in it! WTTW is Chicago’s Public Network using funding from the Illinois Lottery, the network exists to be nondiscriminatory regardless of polling or economic status making the ballot should be enough. The people deserve to know their true options, not the choices from those who can afford to play hardball, it’s not democratic. If this is our political future, we can certainly stop encouraging our children to run for Mayor. Most of the people in this city don’t have a million dollars, so I guess this means we can stop looking for the people’s champ on

WTTW/PBS. When the interview starts I begin by announcing my journalist status and that I’m working with a local paper; Chicago Street Journal noting that I wanted a comment in regards to claims coming from the Walls for Mayor camp. If you’ve only listened to this recording once it could be a bit confusing because she does respond, but not to the question asked. She says, “well I will say this” and she goes on to say all candidates have been invited to be on Chicago Tonight, which if you’re not political savvy you really wouldn’t know the difference. Unlike Chicago Tonight, the Feb 4th debate gives each candidate the opportunity to respond and challenge their opponent on important policy that matters in Chicago such as the red light cameras, school closures/reopenings, economic plans and more. The one thing that is irrefutable is that Dock Walls is certainly the man when talking policy and economics that simply make sense. A Simple, clear and logical political agendas is the wheel that could really unite this city. It would only make sense that a candidate like William Dock Walls would be invited. Chicagoans WTTW has failed the community in their effort to present the truth. If this debate is simply for show based on what Mary stated, they only invite candidates that affect their ratings and appear to be on the move, oh and lets not forget candidates that have a million dollars then we might as well watch The Price is Right! It has less of an impact on our day-to-day lives. When it comes to hearing policy that affect our taxes, schools, jobs and livelihood we deserve to hear the best plan despite the clown show that Rahm and the others can afford to pay for. I understand you want to make money PBS, I’m not against that, but if we have to look for more reliable reporting I certainly rather take Illinois Lottery funding and do just that. Ron Carter, describes “The Three Blind Mice” phenomena which in essence is the blind leading the blind. The article suggests encouraging leaders like Obama, Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson to step up for what is true and right in the city of Chicago instead of continuing to mislead the public. While I do agree with the theory of the blind leading the blind, I think the people need to empower themselves and learn to make conscious and informed decisions that are

Ron Carter’s aforementioned article also said “How many times do we have to see a bunch of highly educated black “leaders” in expensive suits talk about problems facing America” The real question is how many times do we have to see any color leader only talk about anything they plan to do. Just like the rest of us, if you’re applying for

the job, do the research and develop a plan before you interview. Why else should you be hired? Unfortunately by the time you’ve read this article the forum will have passed so now lets focus on what’s more important, come Feb. 25th we could be welcoming one of 4 Challengers (Jesus Garcia, Bob Fioretti, Willie Wilson, Dock Walls) or our incumbent Rahm Emanuel. Steve Rhodes wrote a beautiful piece in Crain’s Chicago Business Magazine, I’ll paraphrase and add some advise of my own: don’t believe the polls and do the research! We’ve lost so

There is a clear cut choice in the 20th Ward. We have a candidate who has not helped the community but voted for red light cameras, voted to close the schools and voted with

With the get-out-the-vote effort ramping up in Chicago, the race has at least have voters talking, debating, and asking each other, “Who do you plan to vote for Mayor?” Now the question; who will select the next Mayor as in the last Governor’s race: Money, The People or the Press? As Keeshana Meehan, Freelance Journalist address (page 7) the ‘Block out of Walls at WBBM’ form their debate, Mayor Rahm Emanuel with the biggest campaign funds, followed by Willie Wilson, and second ward Alderman Fioretti and District Cook County Commissioner and Floor Leader Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, William ‘Dock’ Walls, running for the third time for mayor begins to move ahead in independent polls with less money. Garica kicked off his campaign late, in November, was asked by Huffington Post “What is the main issue?” Garcia replied, “People feel alienated from Mayor Emanuel...there is a sense about him that they don't share.. aloofness and

the arrogance about knowing more than what Chicagoans know. I think that strikes them very negatively because they’re the Chicagoans.” With a lengthy history of community activism, he was the first elected Mexican-American Illinois State Senator and a former ally of Harold Washington. Though he claims to be against red light cameras, as a member of the Cook County Board, he accepted a $1,500.00 contribution from Red Speed LLC and voted for their River Forest red light contract demonstrating Garcia’s recent willingness to compromise against the interests of his constituents. Former White House Chief of Staff, Mayor Rahm Emanuel won the 2011 election on the platform of “change”. With the expected endorsement of President Barrack Obama, calling him hardheaded, but in essence a style of getting things done. With questionable ethnics on issues. Emanuel, once in office, he implemented a massive red-light and speed camera operation to balance the city deficit. Though effectively an unconstitutional disproportionate tax that low income residents suffered the burden. Closing of the fifty schools in mostly African American areas, Emanuel balance the Chicago Public Schools budget. One issue that many candidates use to target their campaigns around. Emanuel relied on City Council and other leaders, including Black ministers, to back far reaching legislative initiatives. According to a Chicago Tribune report, a backlash to Emanuel's "rubber stamp" City Council support has begun, with Alderman John Arena’s Progressive Reform Coalition and the Paul Douglas Alliance attracting attention. “You could put your name on some resolution or on an ordinance, knowing that it’s going to go to the rules committee to die,” according to Ald. Arena.

Mayoral candidate Alderman Fioretti found his ward eviscerated by redistricting after standing firmly against many of the initiatives. Walls known for his close relationship to former Mayor Harold continues to passionately believe in Washington’s vision with a more technical style on the issues. On a shoestring budget, he passed the most stringent ballot requirements of any elected position in the US, three times. As a “perennial candidate” he says he has had time to give deep thought to an increasingly detailed and comprehensive platform that includes creating 50,000 sustainable private sector jobs—funded by the $7.9 Billion Capital Improvement Program in Chicago’s current budget, with ex-

tensive safeguards built into his program, preventing corruption. Walls opposes red-light cameras as other rivals of Emanuel, proposing, instead, fair tax revenue from job generation. His plan supports an elected school board, again as all other mayor candidates, except for Emanuel. Walls’ plan, additionally, outlines proactive safeguards protecting parents from corrupt school board infiltration. Walls' received Chicago Street Journal’s endorsement for this race due to his well thought out and robust platform. In an independently run N’digo (Continued on page 9)

poll, Walls polled at 52.57%. But still lacking funds, CSJ believe, therefore, that if the voters on the South and West Sides show up to vote—which has not happened since Obama’s election in 2008—a runoff would occur, with Walls a likely possibility. While candidates for Mayor would normally showcase law, political science and business degrees in support of their supposed qualifications to run a world class city, Dr. Willie Wilson boasts “Education Level: 7th Grade,” offering a case study in business acumen and commitment to improve Chicago trumping the expected resume for this position. Born into a sharecropping family, he later moved to Chicago and worked for $2/hour at McDonalds until Ray Kroc, founder, gave him a restaurant which he expanded into four before selling them to start a successful multimillion dollar and award winning medical supply company. A lifelong Independent and a friend of Governor Rauner, on whose transition team he served, Wilson chairs the Chicago Bible Institute International, is an author, host and Executive Producer of the Emmy Award winning TV gospel show-Singsation, in its 27th season. “Concerned citizens asked him to run and he decided to accept the challenge.” Business acumen, he believes, qualifies him. Job creation, education and public safety are his top priorities, corruption his primary concern. Second Ward Alderman, Robert 'Bob' Fioretti has prioritized education and job creation, and serves on five city council committees. Known for taking strong stands on positions antithetical to Rahm’s, recent gerrymandering left Fioretti with none of his original ward intact. Blacks also decreased significantly in two wards though the average proportion increased, and Hispanic and black were less represented in mixed wards. Ald. Waguespack and Fioretti proposed an alternate map, opprobriously rejected, to keep communities intact. Rather than running for the adjoining ward in this election, he chooses to run for Rahm’s position. Politically conservative former football player, coach, and television commentator Mike Ditka, said on Fioretti: “If I had a player who wasn’t getting the job done, and another guy had the talent to do the job, I’d put him in.” Many political analysts agree that race has continued as a factor in the mayoral race. Walls, looking at the landscape, says no one candidate for Mayor has ever been able to match the Machine's money or ability to get out the vote. “Several candidates combined have a better chance of achieving that goal of replacing Emanuel.” according to Walls. “The main objective is to defeat Rahm. To do that we must first make sure Rahm does not get 50 percent of the vote.”

Out of school and out of work teens and young adults ("disconnected youth") face adverse labor market consequences in as adults, including higher unemployment, reduced earnings, and higher poverty, and susceptible to behavioral and health problems. Investments in creating meaningful work for these youth will pay dividends immediately and for years to come.

Steve Harvey's Pay It Forward Scholarship .

The Coca-Cola Pay It Forward Scholarship Program offers scholarship awards and once-in-a-lifetime apprenticeship experiences to African American youth looking to pave the way for their future. The program is under the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation’s umbrella; the popular talk show host and best-selling author has been providing this opportunity since 2012. Partnering with the CocaCola Pay It Forward program builds on Harvey’s long-term commitment to youth mentorship. His foundation has long hosted mentoring camps for young AfricanAmerican men. The camps promote educational enrichment, one-on-one mentoring and global service initiatives. Each year, the program impacts 100 youth in five cities across the country. Winning students will get to participate in an apprenticeship allowing them to help with the Mentoring Program, including learning what it takes to run the Steve Harvey Morning Show and Family Feud. They get an opportunity to meet and be mentored by Steve Harvey himself. The winning student will also be awarded a scholarship to help pay for college tuition. The program is open to teens and young adults aged 16-21. Nominators must be 16 years of age or older. Eligible youth may nominate themselves. Winners will be selected and contacted within two months after the deadline. The application deadline is March 31, 2015

CHICAGO: A STENCH BLACK HISTORY IN THE POLITICAL CAMP

C

an you possibly see if not smell the horrific stench that’s under the Chicago taxpayers’ nose? I humbly suggest that if caring people connect the political dots therewith, they will discover culprits with ill intents. With masks of pretense, deceitful

political candidates with questionable agendas are well concealed among other like-minded thieves! You might want to carefully observe the various deceitful candidates. Watch as they smirk at the various communities they represent. Truth is, they have politically

assured the incumbent on the Fifth Floor… that they will deliver on promised ethnic votes. I’ve watched their masterful demeanors and observed their political steps … which in some cases lead to their demise. Political history my parents were considered

leading ward captains who could deliver a winning vote for the ward boss. A ward captain had the responsibility to stimulate voters to bring into play a winning vote to please not only the ward boss but the ‘Man’ downtown. The powerful seat of Chicago Mayor has turned incredible aspirers into vicious culprits. Political history dictates that the white power structure strips each credible candidate of any reasonable decency, while those left are by way of the media’s hidden hand labeled as powerless. However, because of the all mighty dollar and their level of intelligence … may become a political ‘broker’. Though the philosophies of our many yesterdays have changed, the political game is still the same! Politicians: Democrats and Republican alike have always slept and conspired together especially in regard to African Americans. The game is still the same just the players have changed! History dictates that African Americans have given blood, sweat and tears to bring about constructive change for all Americans … which include blacks.

Note: Frederick Douglass In 1888, Frederick Douglass was invited to speak at the Republican National Convention. Afterwards, during the roll call vote, he received one vote, so was nominally a candidate for the presidency. In those years, the candidates for the presidency and vice presidency were chosen by state representatives voting at the nominating convention. Many decisions were made by negotiations of state and party leaders “behind closed doors.” Douglass was not a serious candidate in contemporary terms.

Note: George Edwin Taylor In 1904, George Edwin Taylor, was president of the National Negro Democratic League.Southern Democrats were enacting laws that disfranchised most Black voters and were imposing segregation through “Jim Crow” laws. Northern Democrats seemed unwilling and/or unable to control the excesses of their Southern parties. By 1904, Taylor was positioned to abandon the party and bureau that he had led as president for two terms. It was not a good time to be a Black Democrat. It also was a time when lynching was creeping northward and when racism was gaining acceptance within the nation’s intellectual and scientific community. It’s known that those having money has always been a common denominator and a determent factor as to who is better able to sleep with whom. After a black has slept with the enemy, they get up from the bed of prostitution only to realize in hindsight … they have been used! History states it better: When are we going to learn and do better? Women have always led the charge, such as:

Note: Shirley Chisholm In 1972, Shirley Chisholm, was the first African American candidate for president for the Democratic Party nomination. In the actual balloting at the 1972 Democratic National Convention, she gained additional

votes from disaffected Democrats and ended with 152 delegates.

A man with a vision was: Note: Jesse Jackson In the 1984 presidential election and 1988 presidential election, Jesse Jackson was the first black candidate to run nationwide primary campaigns. He also competed as a Democrat. In 1984, he garnered around 3 million votes in the primaries and in 1988, around 7 million.

In 1992, Alan Keyes, was the first African -American candidate to run in the Republican presidential primaries. Keyes participated again, unsuccessfully, in 1996, 2000, and 2008.

In 2004, Carol Moseley Braun and Al Sharpton were unsuccessful candidates in the Democratic primaries. “Tea Party” Republican Herman Cain staged a run for the presidency in 2012, and received a brief surge of attention and popularity, but withdrew before any primaries were held. After having tried many vehicles to get into the Chicago World of Politics, the name of a gentle spirit came about… as though it was divine intervention… and it was! That name was Harold Washington!

Mayor Harold Washington: was an American lawyer, politician and elected in 1983 as the 51st Mayor of Chicago. He was the first African-American Mayor of Chicago, and of the largest segregated city in North America, serving from April 29, 1983 until his death on November 25, 1987. He was also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983 representing the Illinois first district, and also previously served in the Illinois State Senate and the Illinois House of Representatives. Records indicate that only a few black politicians have emerge from the ‘world of politics’ unsoiled … Washington did so with grace and dignity! Even the political enemy well understood that Washington was honestly interested in not some but all the citizens. As history would dictate… Washington surrendered his life to counter the political powers that sought to break the back of decency. Question: Can the Chicago taxpayer once again select a candidate of moral and spiritual decency to rule over what was once known to be a great city? Answer: Only God truly knows. Rev. Harold E. Bailey is the founder and president of Probation Challenge. Contact Rev. Bailey: 773.978.3706 or WWW.ProbationChallenge.org

Company, its products and uses, keep in mind that Monsanto is the very leading industry in its field. This agricultural monster that has 404 facilities in 66 countries; which products include, agricultural and vegetable seeds, plant biotechnology traits and crop protection chemicals, according to their website: www.monsanto.com. Seems harmless and helpful! Is it though? I live on a farm. I'm familiar with roundup ready seed. Yes roundup weed killer in corn and soybean seeds. That sounds not so healthy. Hmm, no it isn't! That corn gets fed to the cattle or sold to market and has herbicides mixed in with the round up. Now to me that sounds like poison! Maybe that's just my opinion. Facts are: poison is poison no matter how many parts per million that it is broken down before it gets to your table. Let’s look at what's on your table: Most ingredients in your cupboard most likely have a

GMO (Genetically Modified Foods). This sounds unnatural to me. I 'm an Agricultural Journalist and I also do some AGGenetic Experimentation; but only on an all pure, natural level. See the attached photo. My corn gets bombarded by deer verses an adjoining neighbors corn that deer choose as second choice. I was told by a local farmer that this was due to the genetically altered seeds. Even wildlife knows the difference. That sends a strong message we should be paying attention to. My stalks are from my seeds. I produce at least three times more yield per stalk without chemical fertilizer, round up or herbicides. I've been experimenting for years and never have needed chemical introduction and I reproduce my own seed. Isn't that what a GMO is? No! GMO's are a result of selective and mutation breeding. Basically using methods and chemicals to produce more yields per acre, more milk from the cow. I don’t use chemicals!

Of course we all want our milk, vegetables and meat. Realizing in this day and age, it's at a cost. Cost to the farmer to compromise from being all organic to having to buy one of the largest seed producer’s seed and trusting that all is safe. Cost to our future and our children’s health. Hormone fed bovine and crops chemically altered to get that meal to the table? I want to know what's in my food! Do you? Is Monsanto taking over the Worlds choice of seed? Today (Common Dreams) published a very informative article on the health risks of GMO's. See (http:// www.commondreams.org/ news/2015/01/30/moms-anddoctors-have-message-monsantoyoure-making-us-sick) Please read all the facts, read the labels on your food you buy and make your own decision. Is MONSANTO saving the World or is MONSATAN destroying it? You be the judge!

Black Wall Street Chicago endorsed the following aldermanic candidates for alderman. The organization endorsement was not only on their strong insight in getting things done with political strength, in most cases they were also the only candidate from their respected wards attended the BWSC Summit, Jan 31. In doing so they also support the development of Black Wall Street Districts in their wards. They have also agreed to push the BWSC Parity Legislation for the Aldermanic Menu Funds calling for contracts and jobs in proportion of the racial makeup of the ward. The Parity Legislation calls for work done in the wards represents the racial makeup of the community. As residents request sidewalks, curbs, alleys and other work to be done by the alderman, ward-after-ward, from Englewood to the Westside of Chicago, every African American ward (at least) is witnessing the same disparity of award contracts and jobs of the Alderman’s Menu Fund, a $1.32 Million pet fund budget to be spent on improvements. The funds are controlled by each of the 50 aldermen. the Aldermanic Menu contracts and labor has not represented the racial make-up of the wards. Re-addressing the issue from over five years ago, Black Contractors in the Neighbor (an affiliate of Black Wall Street Chicago) met with Alderman Robert Fioretti (2) where he pleaded to sponsor legislation for Parity of the aldermanic Menu funds. The legislative ordinance, resolution proposal is to address the City of Chicago contract bidding process to be directed under the aldermanic procurement control. It allows the city with the aldermen leadership to structure contracts for bidding solely among racial parity for contractors/vendors and contains goals provision by which each city ward can require that a value be contracted or subcontracted according to its racial population in the ward contract procurement process. The candidates position to implement the Parity Legislation on the Aldermanic Menu as a sponsor, rather elected or not. The endorsed candidates agreed to push the push it forward towards implementation as well as for the Black Wall Street 15 Districts as it related to their ward, rather elected or not. All efforts has been made to reach all candidates. Those candidates that were not present at the Summit do not get an endorsement for BWSC. For one their time did not allow them to be present or did not express an interest. Other than Alderman Willie Cochran, Jeffery Baker 21, Michael LaFargue 9, Our support for candidates differ from Chicacgo Street Journal and surprise, it may anger, it may please. The goal of the endorsement is to advance the conversation, and we invite readers to send us their views (see the box on today’s letter page for details on how to do that. The goal is participation. This is something we ask of our readers on a regular basis, so it's something we think we should do as well. him about his title as an Uncle Tom. He said “I know what I have bought to my people, he said “far more than many”. And the same can be said about Sawyer, who has been apart of the political machine and never waved from it. For them both, the term Uncle Tom has to be visited during Black History Month and in our endorsements. The term now can be considered “Sambo”. But not for Sawyer and Stroger, Sawyer and Stroger both at least ran on a democrat platform which did exist in Chicago politics. In 2013 President Obama’s former staff from the White House, Ken Bennett (17th Ward legacy) was hired by Emanuel as his director of African American affairs; the handwriting was on the wall. Ken Bennett’s former boss Terry Peterson is Emanuel’s campaign director. One of Bennett’s first task with the help of Rev. Byron Brazier was to organize about 50 black ministers, which included Father Mike Pfleger. The meeting was held at Captain Hard Times on 79th street, It isn’t clear what the ministers got out of the meeting that would address the racial segregation of economic disparity in Chicago. Percy Coleman, co-chair of Chicago Republican Party says, the Democratic of Chicago is overdue in addressing a Platform for Illinois and in particularly the black community base. As the Republican Party does address African Americans in their Platform, Black leaders that have endorsed Emanuel has

not presented such a plan nor any of the other candidates. In1983 Chicago had a Democrat and Republican Primary. Former Mayor Richard Daley lead the change so now there is only a Municipal election. Thus, a candidate for mayor who gets 50% plus 1, wins the election flat out. There is no General election whereby there is no opportunity for progressives to run a Political platform against machine politics in Chicago. It continues to inflict wounds on the south and west sides for the most part being spoken of in whispers. As for the Black Caucus of the city council its chair Howard Brookins (21), endorsed the mayor, no formal position from the Black Caucus. Most aldermen would say of Emanuel, “I got what I wanted from the mayor”. If that’s true then that’s an incredibly selfish thing to say, you’re in the wrong profession. Aldermen aren’t elected to serve or rubber-stamp the mayor, they are elected to serve as a (Continued on page 13)

voice for their ward. And black alderman, still are accountable for their people, above their ward. If Emanuel is good for Black Chicago, where is the platform? Neither Barrack Obama, Congressman Bobby Rush, Jesse Jackson nor Min Louis Farrakhan has sought out such a plan and none of them have supported William “Dock” Walls nor Willie Wilson for Mayor. According to the Chicago 2040 plan there’s no mention of the racial unfairness of Chicago. With all due respect to Mr. Wilson, he is ‘Johnny come late’. He has not addressed or taken questionnaires seriously, took no public political position on the Chicago Black agenda in the 20year history of The Chicago Street Journal. If he thinks his governor friend who is also a friend of Emanuel, would let him be on his Transitional Team if there was not hidden agenda, either he’s mistaken or he thinks we’re all foolish. International millionaire Willie Wilson must have had something put in his ear to run. Our endorsement to Walls for Mayor for the City of Chicago came by way mostly from our supporters and readers whom suggest William ‘Dock’ Walls is the only candidate with the ability to articulate an economic plan in detail. Most nonpolitically inclined persons that watched either debate says, “He is smart’, “He certainly won the debate,” A voter, Kimberley Green questions, “Yes Dock Walls do have the best platform for the city that puts the other candidates to shame; but can he win?” Can he really win? The answer is yes, more than yes, in elections like these

money and power is used as mind control. Walls, can win with 300,000 votes. In Chicago, only 46 percent, 632,770 of 1,368,708 registered voters voted in the governor’s race of 2014. Over 700,000 didn't vote—54% stayed home. Who can be a more effective political leader in progressing the grass root movements of Chicago? Dock Walls has proven that he would. Over half of Chicago’s voters give up believing that their voice really doesn’t count. We at Chicago Street Journal understand this and as well as most elected officials, for if those voters voted it would result in them being out of office. Walls’ detailed plan demonstrates understanding of the Chicago budget and includes funding sources for higher ticket items--such as his 50,000 jobs creation plan, which draws from existing funds in the Capital Improvement Plan to expand well established local businesses who would be likely to leave Chicago-- taking the jobs with them--as multinationals have done in the past. Grassroots economic development of organizations such the Black Wall Street Districts, the heart and soul of Chicago, as well as this newspaper, promote pro-growth business policies rooted in the Black communities of Chicago, providing economic stability and growth throughout this city, and see the election as a process of evolution. The one endorsement that carries the most weight is from the constituents. We celebrate Black History Month by looking in depth, at someone who’s ideas and their solutions align with ours, not ‘mine’. Celebrate Black History Month, with history making.

and where thousands of Black boys have been killed and maimed over the past few years, the MacArthur Foundation passed out "Genius Awards" to people who were musicians, authors, scientists and poets. In their way, the MacArthur Awards congratulate and reward people who are not working to educate and save the lives of Black boys. Essentially, they are saying, that in this American city, the one they call home, educating and making young Black men productive citizens is not valued. The MacArthur Foundation speaks for America. America has a reputation for helping people all over the world. We have soldiers stationed in dozens of countries and we invest hundreds of billions of dollars in countries worldwide. But in the streets of most American large cities, police shoot down young Black men with alarming regularity (about one every 28 hours); tens of thousands of young Black men die every year in an undeclared "ghetto war"; hundreds of thousands of young Black men are annually ushered into the prison system of America; and millions of young Black men and boys are under-educated and miseducated in American schools. These realities constitute a sophisticated, 21st -century form of lynching young Black men and boys. Such genocidal treatment of any population should gain international attention including sanctions by the United Nations and massive national and international petition drives led by human rights groups. But because these are young Black men and boys in America, little is said or done to change this horror. And Black America, by its inaction, remains complicit in these horrendous outcomes for young Black men

and boys! Most Black church and business leaders, educators, and elected officials are silent as this gargantuan-scale human tragedy continues unabated. American schools are systematically slaughtering the minds and spirits Black boys. Chicago is not alone with only 9% of 8th-grade Black boys reading proficiently. Louisville, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, Philadelphia and Los Angeles share Chicago's ignominy with 9% of 8th-grade Black boys reading proficiently. Unbelievably, some cities are worse including Baltimore, Dallas and San Diego, 7%; Washington D.C., 6%, Detroit, 5%, and Milwaukee and Cleveland, 3%. In America, only 10% of 8th-grade Black boys read proficiently. This failure to educate Black men and boys is America's unspoken shame. Nearly 150 years since slavery ended in America, Black America must accept the reality that no help is coming to transform the plight of young Black men and boys! If our young men are to be saved, it will be because the Black community saves them. If our young men are taught to read, it will be because we teach them to read. If our Black boys develop into strong, positive, productive, globally competent Black men, it will be because Black America makes it happen. And we should expect no help from foundations like MacArthur. The 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, Black men and boys were lynched in America with ropes and trees. Now they are lynched with schools and prisons, but the results are still the same. Phillip Jackson Black Star Project

alderman of political strength, but more to their work of management of their wards, and moving them forward. There has, since 2009, been a delay of aldermen moving forward the Black Wall Street Parity Legislation, while most candidates have expressed some form of interest, the same as the aldermanic candidates of 2011. Of the ten aldermen earned the Chicago Street Journal’s support at this juncture, due to their expressed wiliness to push it still are four: Pat Dowell (3), Will Burns (4), Rod Sawyer (6) and Willie Cochran (20). Each of the aldermen cover a Black Wall Street District. (43rd st, 51st St. 61st St. 63rd St. and Cottage Grove. 69th St. and 75th St. and possibly 79th St. east) We feel it is important to have aldermen in office who have a base of support at the forefront of issues we’ve been speaking out on, an alderman who allows our voice to be heard, as we amplify it through our media platform--this two-way pact results in winning solutions. As the publisher of The Chicago Street Journal in support for the aldermen differ from Black Wall Street Chicago, in which I chair. BWSC was an open vote of the organization body. Granted, at Chicago Street Journal, as other news media outlets maybe, we are observers with louder than usual voices, as we are part of the news as well as reports the news. . pends increasingly on two factors: A high voter turnout, and rather challenging candidates will be able to lead the charge and to take the plunge and give voters a reason to increase the last turn out of only 33% of Chicago voters. Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), mayoral candidate, said Yet aldermen, do not want to go up against Chicago Forward formed by Emanuel a political committee to support candidates in line with the mayor’s agenda. Chicago Forward is not different from any other Mayor or President would organize to help push their programs. The Chicago Forward PAC even have non aldermanic candidates at bay, by not endorsing any mayoral candidate. The Tribune contacted some of the candidates, but they declined to speak for attribution. Some were mulling whether to even fill out the form, in part because of recent polls that show low approval ratings for Emanuel. The Progressive Caucus has been Emanuel’s most persistent critic, more than Hispanic and Black Caucus. The progressive challengers salute Ald. Bob Fioretti; Ald. Toni Foulkes (15); Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6); and Ald. Scott Waguespack (32); and Toni Folks (15). “Chicago Forward” is a thinly veiled attempt to stifle City Council dissent by “taking out” aldermen with the guts to stand up to Emanuel. Chicago Street Journal will make other endorsements of alderman in the coming issue. For now we highly endorse; Michael Lafargue for the 9th ward, James Dukes for 17th Ward, Alderman Toni Foulks 15, for 16th Ward, Doris Brooks for the 21st Ward.

to build a new comprehensive selective enrollment high school named West Side Unity High School to bring equal educational opportunities to our West Side communities of Austin, North Lawndale and East and West Garfield Park.” Ford’s House Resolution HR 1121 proposes that the new high school be built on existing Chicago Public Schools property at Madison Avenue and Central Avenue, at the site of the recently closed Emmet Elementary School. Recently, CPS has asked for input for the use of recently closed buildings, including Emmet. “This is a great location for the new school, easily accessible to West Side students by public transportation on buses and the Green and Blue lines,” said Ford. “It is also just blocks away from Rockne Stadium, where CPS plans to invest $700,000 in capital upgrades in the 2015 budget. This project would remove the eyesore of a boarded up old school, and serve to continue the revitalization of Madison Avenue to which the Mayor is committed. Tax increment financing (TIF) money is available for this project, and we can save millions in costs by using the same blueprint as that being planned for the new Barack Obama College Prep High School.” The previous Austin High School, which was previously one of the premier high schools in the

city of Chicago, closed in 2007 after years of poor performance. Currently three small specialty high schools occupy the old Austin High School building. “Thousands of high school students in our West Side communities still must leave their neighborhoods to go to school because of a lack of seats,” said Ford. “It is important for taxpaying families on Chicago’s West Side to have access to a high quality high school where they feel welcome to be self-motivated to do their best.” Ford said. “A quality education is the only true hope to create an independent person. I met with Governor Quinn and delivered my request for a $60 million appropriation bill for the high school. I will move forward during the final days of budget talks to have a budget that is fair and delivers for the Eighth District.” “The state of Illinois sends billions of dollars of tax-payers’ money to the city of Chicago for educational programming and capital projects,” said Ford. “The money to build a new high school for the West Side is there. It is up to the governor and the mayor of Chicago to have the will to want to help deliver for the West Side. I urge Governor Quinn, who is a resident of the Austin community, to work with Mayor Emanuel to bring a new high school to the families on the West Side of Chicago.”

Little League International stripped Chicago's Jackie Robinson West baseball team of its national title following a boundary remap that Little League International now says allowed the team to bring in star players from outside its boundaries. Officials from the Williamsport, Pa.-based league awarded the title to the Nevada team Jackie Robinson beat in the championship game, suspended manager Darold Butler from Little League activity, and removed Michael Kelley, the top administrator from Illinois District 4, which oversees several leagues on Chicago's South Side. "After an extensive review of the operations of Jackie Robinson West Little League and Illinois District 4, the Little League International Charter/Tournament Committee has determined that the Jackie Robinson West Little League and Illinois District 4 Administrator knowingly violated Little League International Rules and Regulations by placing players on their team who did not qualify to play because they lived outside the team’s boundaries," Little League stated. The boundary issue came to light in December after DNAinfo Chicago reported that a suburban league, upset that some south suburbs were praising players on Jackie Robinson West's supposed all-city roster as their own, complained to Little

League International. Little League International at the time said it re-reviewed paperwork submitted by Jackie Robinson West before the summer tournament and considered the matter closed. But Little League’s charter committee reopened its investigation into the cheating allegations levied against Jackie Robinson West after DNAinfo Chicago reported new information about changes made to the U.S. Champion’s 2014 boundary map in violation of Little League rules. "In a series of intense closed-door meetings in Chicago earlier this month at the Chicago Hilton on South Michigan Avenue, Jackie Robinson West sister league officials told Little League International officials new details that prompted the additional probeWhen that news broke, the president and coach of the Las Vegas team that lost to Jackie Robinson West in the World Series semifinal game contacted DNAinfo Chicago to call on Little League international to strip the Chicago team of the U.S. Title. Kristi Black, the president of Nevada's Mountain Ridge Little League

during last summer's series, said this week she was concerned the U.S. title already “has an asterisk on it like the one on Barry Bonds home run record,” and the Las Vegas team “rightfully deserves to be recognized as the legitimate team that went the farthest” in the World Series tournament. The controversy went public in December when DNAinfo Chicago first reported Evergreen Park Athletic Association Vice President Chris Janes filed a formal complaint with the Pennsylvania-based youth sports organization accusing Jackie Robinson West officials of “manipulating, bending and blatantly breaking the rules for the sole purpose of winning at all costs.” At first, Little League International issued a statement saying the organization looked into the matter and felt “confident that the documentation provided to the organization from Jackie Robinson West Little League meets the residency regulations for the 2014 Little League Baseball tournament season … [and] considers the issue closed at this time.” According to Little League rules, "A league’s boundaries must not overlap or encroach on another chartered Little League's boundaries." And to do so requires permission from the president’s of affected leagues. Las Vegas coach Ashton Cave said that if Jackie Robinson West changed its boundaries against Little League rules to create a super team “it can’t be something that’s swept under the rug.”

Apple $6.5 Billion debt offering – for business Diversity

(New York, NY) January 13, 2015 – Rev. Jesse L. Jackson kicked off the first day of the 18thAnnual Wall Street Project Economic Summit, “Where Wall Street, Main Street & Silicon Valley Converge,” in New York City with a one-on-one conversation with Intel’s CEO Brian M. Krzanich to discuss his vision and implementation of the company’s $300 Million diversity and inclusion initiative. The Summit along with Black Enterprise magazine presented the 40 Best Companies for Diversity, discussed how to improve minority hiring, access to capital and how to secure venture capital -- the day ended with an opening reception hosted by actor, comedian Mark Curry. Jackson held a conversation with Krzanich, who talked about how Intel can help provide the solution to closing the technology gap. “We want to hire more minorities who will be the hiring power to create more diversity within Intel. We want to hire the best and brightest women and minorities to provide opportunities at Intel,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said. “We want to create more scholarship programs and make the transition to Silicon Valley much better.” Krzanich also announced plans to release diversity data on

In fact, he said Rauner has taken away what was legally given them. Referring to Rauner’s cutting the budgets for youth employment by $4.5 million, $3.5 million in afterschool care and day care programs, Pfleger said, “last Thursday the Governor without warning without conversation all programs were ended effectively immediately. The programs were just ended” including day care programs. Pfleger said African American youth unemployment is at an “all time high and while the governor is cutting programs for young people… giving his deputy governor a 24 percent increase in salary.. his chief of staff a 38 percent increase .. his general counsel a 53 percent increase.. his budget director a 20 percent increase .. his executive assistant a 94 percent increase in and he’s hiring a chief of staff for his wife. How you hire a chief of staff when you have no staff? Gov. Rauner, we’re here to tell you…Do not balance your budget on the backs of poor people and don’t turn your back on our youth…. Restore the money now.” More than 250 people joined Pfleger and protested the budget cuts chanting, ‘What do we want? Jobs. When do we want them? Now.”

their supply chain. Jackson applauded the game changing initiative, saying, ““RainbowPUSH argues companies must set measurable diversity and inclusion goals, targets and timetables. Intel has done just that, and more. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich is demonstrating visionary leadership by committing the company to a bold new hiring and retention goal to mirror the face of America in its U.S. workforce by achieving full representation of women and under-represented minorities at Intel by 2020. Intel’s “parity 2020” commitment is a game-changer with the potential to fundamentally transform the diversity and inclusion landscape in the technology industry.” The founders of Silicon Harlem – Bruce Lincoln and Clayton Banks – led a panel discussion on encouraging and creating collaborations for tech driven economic development. They were joined by representatives from Silicon Valley and Silicon Alley in the Urban Tech Boom session. Black Enterprise magazine hosted the Diversity luncheon, and along with the Summit released a report on the 40 Best Companies for Diversity. Pfleger, who has had the largest youth employment agency in the Midwest, wasn’t the only one receiving an e-mail from the state ending social and economic programs. Lynette Santiago, executive director of the Fellowship Connection in Humboldt Park hired 350 youth to go to school and social workers “who have taken a vow of poverty” to help the youth. Her organization subsidizes 28 agencies and churches to hire youth. Rauner canceled her $923,000 grant from Department of Labor managed by the Department of Human Services. Oscar Rivera, Jr., who heads the Bikes N’ Roses under Communities United in Albany Park teaches youth about bicycle mechanics and job readiness training. When Rauner canceled the contract, Rivera was forced to fire more than 50 people. He said the youth “are confused. They’ve been shot down….” Diane Liamas, with Community United, said, “A lot of the youth ..thought there was a contract and .. this job was set in stone ..quit their former job and now they don’t have a job at all.” She leased a space and doesn’t know if her organization can break that lease. “This is very hard on our young people.” Rosita Chatonda is the coordinating director for the Black Fund’s Teach for South Shore program and heads the Chicago Alliance of Urban School Educators where she advocates for more than 10,000 African American teachers who had

diversity on the back burner. Editor-in-Chief Derek T. Dingle, SVP/COO at Black Enterprisemagazine said, “… African American inclusion sharpens the competitive edge – it is a must!” “We engage in a qualitative and quantitative analysis of each company,” Dingle added. “This list is extremely important in terms of where corporate America needs to be.” Earl G. (Butch) Graves, Jr., President & CEO of Black Enterprisemagazine, said “embracing diversity is no longer a nice thing to do, but a business imperative …There is a GDP cost for not embracing diversity. That GDP cost has never been measured.” Jeanne M. She had 28 retired teachers and she was going to hire 40 parents. “It’s a wonderful program. ….” Pfleger said “He ran for governor because he said he had a plan. Where’s the plan”? The governor cut between $8 and $9 million ..we had 50 interns show up for work yesterday. “We had to turn them away,” he told reporters. Asked by this reporter if he may sue, Pfleger said the funds were allocated and state lawmakers are meeting to discuss legality. “All our young people here want is a job. You cut all of these programs, get ready for the spring,” Pfleger said. English said 91 percent of the youth are unemployed with 58 percent being black men. “Those are staggering immoral figures and we have to figure out how to deal with that.” He hopes Rauner would take the moral road on resolving this situation. The governor issued a statement saying: “Unfortunately, Gov. Quinn signed a budget that was unbalanced by $1.5 billion. The administration is taking action to manage the inherited budget hole and is working with the legislature to find responsible solutions.” Father Pfleger continues to ask his supporters to call Gov. Rauner at 312.814.2121 and/or his Springfield office at 217.782.0244 and tell him to “honor and restore the contracts.”

Statement from Rev. Jesse Jackson: For the first time in its company’s history, Apple will include African American and Latinoowned financial services firms in its $6.5 billion debt offering. Williams Capital and Ramirez and Co. will participate in the syndicate. Apple is making a major statement with the inclusion of minority financial services firms in this transaction is a major breakthrough for the business of diversity. The good news is that empowers minority firms, and is value added for Apple. Williams Capital and Ramirez and Co. are experienced, top-flight firms with proven track records. We are delighted that they are participating in Apple’s debt offering. They are changing the flow of the river.” Diversity and inclusion should not be limited to workforce development and transformation. There is also a “business dimension” that must also be addressed – supplier diversity and procurement opportunities, access to capital for minority start-ups and companies, and inclusion of minority financial services firms in debt offerings, IPO’s and other transactions. Apple has a reported $178 billion in cash and marketable securities on hand at the end of December, most of it deposited overseas.

Nixon enlisted the help of other community leaders and called a young Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Montgomery to organize the bus boycott within a new organization called the Montgomery Improvement Association. King was elected president and Nixon served as treasurer. The boycott lasted almost a year and was a success. The Supreme Court ordered Montgomery to desegregate its buses on December 20, 1956. After the boycott, Nixon clashed with the other leaders of the Montgomery Improvement Association, partially because he never received as much recognition as King and

Edgar Daniel Nixon was born in 1899 in rural Alabama and grew up in Montgomery. For much of his life he worked as a Pullman car porter (the train equivalent of a flight attendant), which at that time was considered a very good career. In 1925 the porters unionized into the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black-led labor union to join the American Federation of Labor. Nixon helped create the Montgomery branch and served as president. Nixon’s experience traveling outside of the South and with the union inspired him to become an activist. From an old piano to a pair of meat slicers, Cook County is pursuing new ways to generate revenue by selling obsolete and occasionally odd property via an online auction site. “These items are helping the county bring in money instead of collecting dust in a warehouse,” Toni Preckwinkle, President of Cook County Commissioner said. “By auctioning unused property, we are reducing waste, creating new revenue and encouraging fiscal responsibility. We will continue pushing for innovative ways to create revenue without further burdening Cook County taxpayers.” Whether it’s smaller items like nursery chairs or big-ticket items like dump trucks, auctioning surplus equipment provides new funds and allows the County to maximize available storage space. Managed by the Office of the Chief Procurement Officer and populated with items identified by the County’s Bureau of Administration and Sheriff’s Office, the online auction sells antiquated and underutilized assets to national and international marketplaces. In three months, the County has already auctioned off nearly $100,000 of property. The County has had a salvage division for some time which previously focused on recycling, reuse or disposal of equipment and materials no longer needed by different County departments. Approximately two years ago, the Preckwinkle administration began looking into the idea of selling, through auction, surplus equipment and material. Much of the equipment and material was stored in the County’s warehouse or, in the case of vehicles, was sitting unused in garages or maintenance yards throughout the County. Communications were then sent to County departments to identify surplus property for the auction.

Interested parties can bid on items at publicsurplus.com or call the Office of the Chief Procurement Officer at (312) 6035370 for additional information.

Dukes: I believe that there should be a hybrid school board. We need some person that have expertise in educational policies on the board and that will not be guaranteed by an election. I am for a longer school day it gives our children a better chance to compete against their domestic and international peers

CSJ: What would you say to the voters in the 17th Ward? Dukes: I would say we cannot afford to allow either of my opponents to practice leadership at this pivotal time in the fight for a healthy quality of life for the 17th Ward. We must have a leader with vision, creative, the power of persuasion, negotiation capacities and a history of delivering resources to the community. Fund Your Business Through Seed Chicago Seed Chicago is Accion Chicago's Kickstarter Tens of millions of Americans could be victims of the latest corporate data breach, this one at Anthem Insurance. Unknown hackers apparently stole personal identifying information (PII) from current and former Anthem customers, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and other information that can be used for identity theft. Anthem has set up a separate website with information on the breach, but Better Business Bureau recommends that consumers always go to a company’s main website first and follow links from there. Scammers often take advantage of data breaches and subsequent confusion to set up spoof websites and send phishing emails. It According to FTC, 500,000 children under 18 are victimized by

identity thieves each year. Your child’s identity has been stolen if:

Suspicious mail is received, like pre-approved credit cards and other financial offers normally sent to adults, in their own name. You attempt to open a financial account for them but it already exists or the application is denied because of a poor credit history. A credit report already exists in their name. They may have been targeted already since only an application for credit, a credit account, or a public record starts the compilation of a consumer credit file. Even if you have not seen these signs, as your child gets close to the age of 16, it’s a good idea to check on his or her credit report. Being proactive and regularly

monitoring your child/children's credit reports and/or personal information for the existence of a credit file allows your child to enter adulthood with a clean credit slate. Take advantage of the free credit monitoring services Anthem will be offering to breach victims. While this is not a preventative measure, this will alert you to new accounts or inquiries using your Social Security number so that you can act quickly to repair the damage. Vigilance is key. Regularly check your credit reports at annualcreditreport.com for unauthorized charges or other signs of fraud. (NOTE: This is the only free credit report option authorized by the Federal Trade Commission.) For more information and complete step-by-step guidance on repairing the damage caused by identity theft, visit the FTC’s identity theft resources. Expect that scammers will take advantage of this data breach to send out phishing emails and other messages that appear to be from Anthem, a credit bureau or other legitimate companies. Do not click on links from any email, text or social media messages about this or any other data breach. For all businesses that collect customer information:

Make sure you protect your customers’ data. If a data breach can happen to a major corporation with significant data security measures in place, it can happen to any business. Washington's mayoral primary campaign in 1977, Worrill said. In 1980, Palmer founded Chicago Black United Communities, an independent political group that focused on electing blacks, Palmer co-organized the conference at Malcolm X College where the slogan "We shall see in '83" was born. He "was the glue that connected the community" during Washington's campaign, Jackson said. Palmer sought the Democratic primary nomination for Washington's vacated congressional seat but lost to a candidate Washington endorsed."For which Lu was forever bitter. The mayor knew it and regretted it," said Alton Miller, Washington's former press secretary. But Miller said Washington may have avoided backing Palmer precisely because the mayor feared his independencePalmer hosted an issuesoriented talk show. "Lu was a huge figure in Chicago and Black journalism," according his friend and political ally, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.,. of similar stature to Vernon Jarrett. Palmer came to Chicago in 1950 as a reporter for the Chicago Defender. He wrote for other newspapers, including the Chicago Daily News, where he also served as a syndicated columnist and editor for the Nashville, Tennessee, based Tri -State Defender. He founded the Black X-Press Info-Paper in Chicago. He was a recruiter, organizer and preceptor for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest from 1970 to 1990. "His reputation extended far beyond the people he wrote for on his commentaries. When Lu Palmer wrote, people read intensely. When he did commentaries, they listened intently. He was a classic journalist with a mission, not just a journalist with a job. He and Vernon Jarrett brought the journalism downtown where it was needed, and both ultimately lost their jobs because they had non-negotiable principles. But they were exalted in the process. They saw themselves as freedom fighters. Journalism was simply their skill and the pen was their weapon. According to Jackson, Palmer also believed the U.S. government was persecuting Black Panther Party leaders like Fred Hampton, Mark Clark and Bobby Rush[4]. "Lu Palmer believed that the government killed Fred Hampton and Mark Clark and that they sought to kill Bobby Rush," Jackson continued. "Lu was proven to be right. His community paper, the Black X-Press Info-Paper, was dedicated to an alternative point of view. He was a driving force with his popular radio commentary, in the climate that elected Harold Washington mayor…Lu's independence as a journalist and integrity as a warrior are unmatched. And he will sorely be missed. Lu was a part of the essence of the soul of Chicago and our liberation struggle." Sometimes Palmer's positions caused him to quit or lose a job. Illinois Bell canceled its sponsorship of Palmer's twelve-year old radio show in 1983 when he became an outspoken supporter of Harold Washington, who, with Palmer's help, became Chicago's African American mayor. As a community activist, he founded the Chicago Black United Communities in 1979, the Black Independent Political Organization in 1981, and served as chairman of the Extended Services Program for the Group Living Facilities for Boys in 1998-all of which are still in existence. He and his wife, Jorja English Palmer, lived in Chicago's South Side. They have seven children. Palmer passed away on September 12, 2004.

terms as its president in the next 40 years. The N.N.P.A. has since replaced the ''Negro'' in its name with ''National'' and represents more than 200 black-owned newspapers. The organization provided an apparatus through which Sengstacke could exercise his power without standing exposed. When the Roosevelt Administration threatened to arrest black publishers for sedition, he led a delegation to Washington, essentially to call the Administration's bluff. In a rare interview with the press historian Patrick S. Washburn in the early 80's, Sengstacke recalled confronting the U.S. Attorney General Francis Biddle, telling him ''if you want to close us, go ahead and attempt it.'' Sengstacke's needling and instigation forced the Administration to admit the first Negro reporter to Presidential news conferences in 1944. Rather than let this black firebrand snipe from a distance, Harry Truman brought Sengstacke close, appointing him to the national commission that oversaw the integration of the armed forces. Military commanders must have been astonished indeed when the black publisher who had battered them in his pages showed up to monitor desegregation for the White House. Everyone agrees that Sengstacke embodied the Negro press, but few were privy to the deals he cut with either the White House or the princes of the Cook County political machine. When executives at The Defender pushed him to write his memoirs, Sengstacke demurred. A journalist who knew him said recently, ''He was never more candid than he needed to be.'' His son, the photographer Robert Sengstacke, said of his father, ''He knew how to keep his mouth shut.'' He did indeed, far too well. Sengstacke's influence with the Federal He remained intimate with Boss Richard Daley. During annual parties and inaugural affairs he was one of the rare outsiders at the Boss's family table. Characteristically, he started the campaign for the current Mayor, Boss Daley's son, Richie, from The Defender's front page. His relationships with his own sons were strained. Younger men and women who worked with him recall an overbearing paterfamilias who radiated disdain and thought that his way was the only way. Late in his career he spoke scaldingly of younger black publishers, whom he accused of abandoning tradition in the interest of money. He criticized even the black readership, which had slipped farther and farther into the suburbs, making distribution hellishly expensive and eventually impossible. The decline of the Negro press was inevitable with integration. But when the big papers like The Defender and The Pittsburgh Courier were diminished as national powers during the 1950's and 60's, the rich portrait of Bronzeville they had offered disappeared from the national scene. Only in the last few years has that portrait begun to re-emerge.

The video began to get national television recognition, and was featured on Good Morning America. It was tweeted to the show’s 2.5 million followers. The Steve Harvey show has called, showing interest in the story behind the five minute video clip— Solow’s nonstop flow describing the ups and downs of life, with a gripping narration of his unfortunate circumstances. Sleepy is Co-Founder of Wicked Entertainment, one of Chicago’s oldest independent labels. Sleepy and Co-Still have combined their efforts to make a difference in the life of SoLow Redline. You can donate at GoFundme.com and purchase SoLow’s album entitled “Started from the bottom” on ITunes & Google Play, or directly from WickedEntertainment.net. I met SoLow through a series of various circumstances. We battled each other in a hip hop duel at the celebrity lounge hosted by D.A Smart and Kenya poison, and a divine connection was made. SoLow had heard of Hoodhopemovement, and was also interested in saving inner city youth from a life of murder, drugs and prison. SoLow will be performing at the Hoodhope Hip Hop Black History Turn Up taking place at Hood Hope Headquarters on 61st and Saint Lawrence, Febuary 8th 2015 at 2:00pm. Joseph (SoLow Redline) Lane has been rapping and performing all his life. SoLow was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. As a child he won multiple talent shows. He then continued to build his freestyle skills battling all through school, and then became the freestyle battle King of Chicago, and still holds the championship title. At one point in SoLow’s life, he was homeless for ap-

proximately 12 years. During that time he never stopped rapping. SoLow performed every day in Chicago's subway train station just to make ends meet. His performance on the subway was so amazing that people would give him money. Which made it possible for SoLow to feed his two small children. SoLow is now performing in major venues such as Duane Martin, Tisha Campbell and Will Smith's world famous Xen Lounge, also the world famous Comedy Store. SoLow has also been featured on Good Morning America, Jaime Foxx's Foxxhole Radio, Bishop Don Juan Radio and several other radio plus additional talk shows. Now that SoLow is known around the country as well as internationally from his famous viral video, he has a plan to change hip hop back to its original intent of storytelling with a positive message. After Being Nearly Homeless. Legendary funkmeister extraordinaire Sly Stone the former front man of the iconic ’60s/’70s group Sly and the Family Stone (pictured), has struck it rich, after reportedly being awarded $5 million by a Los Angeles jury due to a lawsuit he filed back in 2010 against his ex-manager, Gerald Goldstein, and entertainment attorney, Glenn Stone. The lawsuit accused Stone’s former business associates of diverting and misappropriating royalties that had been owed to him for more than 20 years, The 71-year -old vocalist and musician, was reportedly living in a van, penniless, and with electricity provided by a family in Crenshaw, Calif. According to court documents, Goldstein reportedly talked Stone in to signing over all of his royalties to a company that was handpicked by him for tax reasons. At the time, Stone thought he was making a savvy move that Goldstein sanctioned. But Stone was dead wrong! Goldstein wound up conning Stone and a jury agreed."

SPEAKS TO WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD WITH RELEASE TO HOT NEW SINGLE

Power Circle’s recording artist

Jada

[as she is called] new single GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD is buzzing and more importantly, stirringup a conversation for the ladies around the world to consider. As one of the premier Divas from the popular “hit” TV show “Bad Girls Club” Jada is showing -off her music skills with this song. The song distributed by TMG Street Pride is of two versions. The original version produced by Saint The Good Boy of Good Boy Beats in Chicago b/w Jada’s Groove Mix (a dance remix produced by legendary multi-platinum producer Jon St. James and co-producer Bob Tirado in LA) are up-tempo, very osculating and will be the “heat” for twenty-fifteen and beyond. When you hear the versions, you’re immediately dancing and romp shaking! That is what Jada is good at. Exciting you. She’s an entertainer extraordinaire who knows what she wants and where she’s heading. Written by Jada, Saint The Good Boy captures the tone and texture to her voice where she delivers a powerful message for the ladies and yet with soothe and sexiness the message becomes clear the hook is a call to sisterhood putting girls on Notice to get in the fast lane and to no longer be sprung by guys playing games and driving women insane. She speaks to the notion that she’s found her voice and for women everywhere from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, and

London to Montreal, Mexico to Hong Kong and Moscow to Africa should also seek to find their voices. Girls Around The World (a club banger) is predicted to be radio bound, a chart topper and a social media conversation for women but a groove for all to enjoy. The enthusiasm to Jada’s musical side was tested earlier when she teamed-up with Saint The Good Boy while taping an episode of the Bad Girls Club in Chicago. They wrote and recorded several diverse songs at GBK Studios and looking at a star on the horizon, Saint The Good Boy wanted to take the music beyond the studio and joining with Darnell Buckner of Power Circle they decided it was time to make the songs publicly known. Striking a distribution deal with TMG Street Pride in Los Angeles, “Girls Around The World” struck the right chord to be the first release. Interviews were in order prompting Jada to visit two of Chicago’s top Radio stations WGCI and WVON as well as appearing at the Dope Radio Network and the Windy City underground radio station. The enthusiasm continued with prepping fans during appearances at various clubs in Chicago, New York and Florida. Following season 12 of Jada appearing on the Bad Girls Club, she went to Los Angeles for a special Bad Girls Club Reunion. With the release to her single, she’s thrilled to acquaint her fans with her music. Although, she will make her rounds to many cities [with one particular round at the NBA All Star Basketball game in New York] Chicago will always be at the forefront to pushing Jada and her single to the top.

from Englewood on the South East side of Chicago. I first came in contact with him when D.A Smart, and another Chicago Hip Hop legend, JMD and I were out finishing up a stop the violence video shoot. We were approaching youth and discussing ending violence, and seeing who could rap. Prince Frank came out spitting hot bars which had us ohhing and ahhing. At that point I knew I wanted to connect with him, so we exchanged information. When we finally linked back up, I was putting together the Hoodhope Hip Hop Black History Turn Up, and he agreed to perform. Of course I told him all clean music, and to my surprise, the youngster had some flames free of profanity and any references to drugs or disrespect of women. When I initially heard him rap it was hard gritty and uncut just like the Chicago streets. I became aware of the extent of his talent and his ability to be marketed. He told me he got his name because he always wanted to be cool like the fresh prince of Belair. But he is not from Belair he is from Englewood, one of the worst hoods in the city, a melting pot of various street tribes feuding for one reason or another. He is only

18 years old but has his own studio and shoots his own videos. Prince has been doing music since he was a youngster, and you can hear it in flows, like his ode to our hometown Chicago. When I quizzed Frank, “What would he label his style?” He simply replied, “unique.” Because in his words he can create “a wonderful mind blowing project.” After listening to some of his music I would have to agree. Sometimes a bit much for me on the materialistic or shoot em up, but I understand where he is coming from and he definitely has a very entertaining way of putting it. Prince Frank has since plugged with Hoodhopemovement and will be performing at the hoodhope black history hip hop turn up. Within the next five years Prince Frank sees himself having an impact on the industry and effecting the youth in a positive fashion. The name of his record label is USWE which stands for UNSPOKENWORDSENT. You can see him perform live on Febuary 8th 2015 at 2:00pm at hoodhopemovement headquarters on 61st and Saint Lawrence.
