Dr. Lyn Hughes, in intimate conversation with Dir. Jon Jarvis, of the National Park Service (NPS) discussing A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter M useum (APRPPM) readiness and participation after designation

By Donnell Robinson Staff Writer The buzz in Chicago is about the interest of the National Park Service (NPS) in the Historic Pullman community. Until just recently, all of the media coverage has focused on Pullmans architecture, and rightly so. However, it was only when the NPS indicated they had a strong interest in the Black labor story, t h e a t t e n t i o n c e n t e r e d o n Back labor and the Pullman Porters, which notes the work of the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter M useum (APRPPM) on 104th street, who has been telling the black labor story for 20 years, both in the community and at the national level. APRPPA has been a mile stone in teaching history and culture awareness for t h e p a s t 2 0 y e a r s . That is what its founder Dr. Lynn Hughes wants to do. , From the Editor & Publisher On the heels of workers’ winning a historic victory for a $15/hour minimum wage in Seattle, twenty-one Chicago aldermen co-sponsored legislation for $15 in the third largest city in the nation. The bill includes a two-year phasein for big business, and a five-year phase-in for businesses whose annual revenue is under $50 million. Despite the unnecessary phase-in for big business, if enacted the proposal would be a major step forward. According to the Center for Popular Democracy, in partnership with Raise Chicago, $15/hour would transform the lives of 229,000 low-wage workers, nearly one quarter of Chicago’s workforce. But there is those that question the Minimum wage. Charles Dawkins of Aurburn Gresham says he is:

Next year, voters in Chicago will head to the polls to elect a new mayor. There is no crystal balls to the 5th Floor for 2015. But over the last months Roger Washington (no relations to Harold W.) a candidate from the City ’s Westside 24th ward alderman seat points out 2015 conceivably will have a wave of voters greater than when the late Mayor Harold Washington was elected in 1983. Washington says it will be the first time in more than two decades of a golden opportunity to elect a minority again to the mayor seat. Few local

campaigns in this country, indeed, in the world, have ever generated such sustained intensity as Chicago's 1983 Democratic mayoral primary. In a city where politics is king, the three-way contest was the (Continued on page 6)

Rauner met with South Side Community Federal Credit Union’s president, Greg Brown depositing a contribution of $200,000 as a donation to the institution, and deposited $800,000 into an interest-bearing account. Rauner pledged his support to the credit union near 54th and Wentworth in July. However, Hermine Hartman of Ndigo is the African American media representative and consultant for Rauner. And before that influential Ministers have endorsed Rauner for governor such as Rev. James Meeks. The choir sang hallelujah as the congregation of 15,000 clapped and sang along with approval. Republican multimillionaire told reporters that his decision to contribute to the credit union was not political. He called accusations he’s buying African-American votes by donating the money “baloney” and “political spin.” “This is a significant day for black businesses struggling on the South Side of Chicago,” said Otis Monroe, president of the Monroe Foundation, a non-profit economic development organization. Monroe was asked whether Rauner’s donation wins him a vote. “I think black businesses are struggling and are used to hearing no from mainstream financial institutions and I will take note of today’s investment by Mr. Rauner,” Monroe said.

Is this okay? Or is it "sneaky"? (Continued from page 1)

“Against it... raising minimum wages you're going to have to raise the prices to pay for the workers. When the prices are raised people will stop eating and shopping causing those places to go out of business. The minimum wage workers will be out of a job in the long run. However, studies show it would pump $665 million into the local economy and create 5,350 desperately needed jobs (Center for Popular Democracy, 5/28/14). As the holidays approach, many Walmart workers are finding they don't have enough money to cover the Holiday dinners for their families. Workers have long been speaking out, calling on Walmart to publicly commit to more hours, better pay and respect at work. Instead of making changes, Walmart has fired or threatened those who have the courage to call on the company to change. A handful of protesters was arrested outside of a Wal-Mart in Chicago’s Lake View neighborhood. But protest were around the city. The protesters were part of a nationwide demonstration asking Wal-Mart to provide a living wage to its employees, and to give them holidays off. Erica Jones, senior manager of communications for Wal-Mart, said “Our associates love their jobs, they love working for WalMart,” she said. “We continue to provide opportunity for not only our associates, but also the communities we operate in.” At least one protester in Chicago does work for a local Wal-Mart. “This is my store, I’m here to take a stand, because to think that Walmart is a good company to work for … which it is until I saw the retaliation, unjust firings, and no living wage,” said Myron Byrd, who estimates he makes about $16,000 per year from Wal-Mart. “When all said and done in my pocket, 20 dollars a month.” After worker at Walmart Anthony Goytia said, "I am a father of three. With the insufficient hours and the low pay that I get at Walmart, I will make around $12,000 this year. I don't need cable or to own a house, but I shouldn't have to rely on food stamps or donate plasma just to feed my kids when I have a job."

On May 28, the Progressive Caucus of Aldermen, backed by community organizations like Raise Chicago and low-wage workers, introduced a separate proposal for $15/hour. Raise Chicago has direct ties to SEIU, whose president currently sits on the M a yo r’ s Min i mu m Wage Working Group. The initiative of the union leaders and Alderman for $15 could compel the Mayor’s Committee – and through them big business and the political establishment as a whole – to concede $15. ultimate battle royal. On February 22, black Chicagoans hunted, found and voted for Washington in such numbers that they defeated both incumbent Mayor Jane Byrne and Cook County State's Attorney Richard M. Daley in the most expensive campaign in the city's history. In 1983, 1,193,013 voted in Chicago, 77% of the registered voters turn out. Harold Washington received the majority votes of 36 percent with 424,146 votes, 80% of African American voters as there were then represented 46% of the city population.. Today Chicago has 1,368,290 register voters, about 36% are African American. Chicago race has always been the factor in elections. A lot based on the ward remaps every ten years, to balance voting and elected officials parity in representation. Edward Vrdolyak former 10th ward Alderman leader and Cook County Democratic President served in office 1971–1987, and lead thee 29 aldermen against Mayor Washington’s 21 allays which resulted in the infamous Council Wars. He said in an interview with WVON talk show host Cliff Kelly, that the City Council wars was not about race but power. He went on to explain that as elected officials seek power and money, if race was the means to secure it, then use it. Many political analyst agree that race, will not be the factor in 2015, issues will be. Emanuel is losing the support of voters in every demographics of the city, according to a new Chicago Tribune poll. A poll of 800 registered voters found that the mayor’s approval rating has taken a dive. That a one on one race Emanuel can lose reelection. Two years ago it was 52 percent. That didn’t change much last year, but now it’s only at 35 percent. Another question asked if Emanuel relates to voters: 32 percent said he was in touch but 62 percent said he was out of touch. Reasons for the unexpected and expected reason William ‘Dock’ may have entered the mayoral race. Even as most of the attention has been focused on Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis. Walls content, “If Chicago voters agree that the first goal is increase voter turnout, and get people to come out to vote for any challenger, we will run up the vote total past Rahm's ability to respond, and the combined challenger vote total will exceed 50%. Thus there will be a runoff 1-on-1.” Testing the strongest indication of Black political power in Chicago came in 1983, then with the election of Barack Obama. After Harold's death, Chicago voters had a series of one-on-one races; Sawyer versus Daley (1989), Tim Evans V. Daley (1989), Danny Davis v. Daley (1991), Joe Gardner v. Daley. (1995), Bobby Rush v. Daley (1999). “None of these household names were able to win against the Machine. That strategy was never intended to work, but keep us confused.” Said Walls.. But polls conducted says Karen Lewis leads Emanuel, with 43 percent of the vote. Emanuel has 39 percent, but 14 percent are undecided. Walls looking at the landscape says no one candidate for Mayor has ever been able to match the Machine's money or ability to get out the vote. “Several candidates combined have a better chance of achieving that goal of replacing Emanuel.” according to Walls in announcing his third run for Mayor. “The main objective is to defeat Rahm. To do that we must first make sure Rahm does not get 50 percent of the vote.” However, in the February 2011 election, Emanuel received 326,331 votes of 55% over five other candidates. He won all the Black wards, where the three Black candidates combined did not receive close to 10% of the Black wards combined total; (Carol Moseley Braun, Patricia Van Pelt Watkins, William Dock Walls, in that order. Political activist Bruce Crosby that’s because of the indirect endorsement of President Barack Obama. “Issues are much clearer now, and people see by now Rham was not the best choice. Walls said Harold did not win simply because he was the only Black Candidate in the 1983 Primary. “Harold won because there were two powerful Machine candidates in that

Most media as from Chicago Tonight guest jouranist leans toward reporting for a more credible challenger will have to emerge to beat the Mayor, overlooking the announced candidates based on polls. In their assessment, only a candidate with more fame, government background, well described agenda, extensive voting base and, most critically, fundraising and organization will successfully challenge Chicago’s incumbent mayor who presently boasts a campaign chest of nearly $8.4 million—more by the official kickoff of the election. But, also if Ald. Fioretti does enter the mayor race, he would have to content with William Daley, A news producer from the heavy voter base of the 19th ward. Ted Cox says high school seniors with jobs and those attending weekday school events may have a hard time adhering to the curfew: The proposed ordinance amendment, submitted at a City Council meeting with Ald. Deborah Graham (29th) serving as sponsor, would change language for the curfew to apply to those from 12 through 17, instead of the current 16. It clarifies that "'minor' means any person under 18 years of age." Emanuel said it was three years ago that he imposed the current curfew, 8:30 p.m. for minors younger than 12 Sunday through Thursday; 10 p.m. for those 12 through 16 Sunday through Thursday; and 11 p.m. for 12-16 on Friday and Saturday. All are effective until 6 a.m. the following day. At the time, Emanuel said, the city "also increased our enforcement ... and also to bear the responsibility to parents." Emanuel added, "Parents have the responsibility to make sure they're indoors. ... We need responsible parenting, and we need to hold our parents accountable." Yet Emanuel was unmoved when asked specifically about the new law's effect on seniors in high school who might not like it. "That may be true," he said, "but they will be safe also, and safety is primary." The council figures to debate the change ahead of the next meeting, Oct. 8

Englewood—As parent groups lead by Action Now marched on a Chicago Public Schools board member's home to protest school closings in Englewood, the end resulted in Englewood and West Englewood alone, six schools--John P. Altgeld Elementary School, Elaine O. Goodlow Elementary School, Arna Wendell Bontemps Elementary School, Elihu Yale Elementary School, Granville T. Woods Elementary School and Benjamin Banneker Elementary School were closed; Of the 50 Chicago Public School closed more than a year after, there has been little progress on finding new uses for most of the now-empty buildings. But there are no plans in the works for 36 buildings, some of which are being vandalized as they sit empty, becoming neighborhood eyesores. CPS is spending $1.8 million a year on the shuttered facilities, which covers electricity, mobile heat and gas costs, roving custodial and engineer crews, and repairs for buildings that are vandalized. Stepping out to address residents who are wondering what is happening with all the Englewood schools that were shuttered, Residents Association of Greater Englewood (RAGE) have held meetings in the neighborhoods with a status update in regards to their work over the past 18 months.

The Journey..... As mentioned at RAGE Englewood Village meeting in July, there is a committed core team of individuals working to see a shuttered school in Englewood repurposed for the greater good of this community.

mum wage challenge this week, living off $79, the average amount someone working full time on the minimum wage in Illinois earns per week after housing costs, transportation and taxes. This budget will cover Governor Quinn's food and living expenses through Saturday, Sept. 6. “Those who think that this challenge is a gimmick should spend one day in a minimum wage workers' shoes,” Governor Quinn said. “ I couldn't even buy my niece a birthday card - can you imagine what it's like for a family getting by on minimum wage come Christmas time?” Raising the minimum wage in Illinois is part of the Governor's commitment to drive economic growth, alleviate poverty and ensure all workers are treated fairly. Governor Quinn propose to raise the minimum wage in Illinois to at least $10 an hour. In what he says, a halfmillion Illinois consumers will make an extra $4,800 a year, providing a strong boost to the local economy. Gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner has taken back and forth positions on Minimum Wage. In an interview of the SunTimes, Rauner said, “I did not speak well, thoroughly, or thoughtfully of minimum wage in the past because I was focused on Illinois’ competitiveness. Illinois is not competitive, and if we’re not competitive, we can’t grow, and we can’t create jobs and raise wages,” Rauner said. “I have a plan now to raise the minimum wage and I will take action to get it done,” Rauner said. He said that plan would include pro-business reforms so small business owners can afford to pay a higher minimum wage. “If we don’t do, if we only do as Pat Quinn is talking about and just raise the minimum wage and do

However, Chicago alderman and union leaders are behind the $15 proposal. Even though their nonbinding referendum for $15/hour passed in City Council it is expected that business lobbyist will not go down quietly. Some Aldermen have expressed willingness to compromise. But being an election season for aldermen it could be a sacrifice. It will also be necessary for the movement to popularize the demands against training wages, tip credits, or other forms of so-called

“total compensation,” which we should label wage theft.

Political will for Independence The 21 Aldermen who cosponsored the bill took an step by challenging Mayor Emanuel, but the strongest challenge to Rahm’s electoral machine would be to build a genuine campaign for a $15 minimum wage. Not only are the Aldermen not proposing this, their ties to the Democratic Party machine prevent them from doing so. With the Pros and Cons of the Minimum Wage, it has a more sensitive nature than, Gay marriages. That surely will have an impact on the economy one way or the other.

No phase-in for big business The business community will inevitably attempt to water down the minimum wage by the council. Organizers feel first and foremost, corporations like Walmart and McDonalds do not need two years to start paying a living wage. In Seattle, the CEO of Starbucks said that his corporation could pay $15/hour, but that he opposed $15/hour because it might hurt small businesses – as if Starbucks has ever been worried about small coffee shops! Concern with price hikes, Barbara Daniels from the Westside said, “An increase in minimum wage will

Trichologist Practitioner Marvelette Jackson boosts national awareness on how hair loss is connected to wellness. Restore the “whole you” – from the inside out. hink back to the last time you had a medical examination. Did your health care provider conduct a hair and scalp analysis? If not, then it was not a complete examination. Fortunately, the medical field is continuously evolving, and now, there is a growing collaboration between medical doctors and Trichologists to make the analysis of the hair and scalp a part of a

routine health exam. According to Trichologist Marvelette Jackson, owner of Touch of Perfection Salon, TrichoScience Clinic and Institute of TrichoScience Education (ITSE),located in Chicago, “If you had a toothache, you’d make an appointment to see a dentist. Dermatologists specialize in problems and diseases affecting the skin. When a person is suffering from health conditions that have reached the point of showing symptoms in their hair and on their scalp, such as baldness, hair breakage, dry or sudden hair loss, then, it is time for them to schedule an appointment with a Trichologist. With early detection, most of these conditions are treatable.” Many people are unfamiliar with the term, Trichology. Trichology is a paramedical branch of medicine that focuses on the study of hair and scalp disorders. It involves an in-depth study of the

functionality of chemistry and physics, as they relate to the anatomy and physiology of the health of hair. Formal study in this particular field dates back to 1902. In a recent interview on CBBN Business Journals, Ms. Jackson indicated that, “Hair loss has reached epidemic portions, worldwide. No one is exempt -- men, women and children alike are displaying the effects of this dis’ease caused in part by lifestyle choices, genetics and poor s t y l i n g c h o i c e s . ” Long-time client, E. Ellis states that, “Trichologist Jackson is knowledgeable and informative about her craft. Her level of expertise surpasses what you would expect to receive from a hairstylist. She diagnosed and corrected several unforeseen conditions that I’d experienced over the years with my hair and scalp. I’m very satisfied with the results.” November 12-14, 2013, Ms. Jackson will be a featured speaker at the upcom-

ing 2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Cosmetology &Trichology hosted by OMICS Publishing Group. OMICS publishes scientific journals and organizes events throughout the year to support the progress of research and developments in the scientific industry. The theme for this year’s event is “To Share Novel approaches which enhances Beauty & Skin Care,” which includes topics, such as “Hair lost management and advances in Trichology.” Hair loss, breakage and other visible scalp conditions are indicators of your overall health and wellness. Isn’t it great to know, that Trichologists have only one mission and that is to “restore the “whole you” – from the inside out.” For more information visit www.TopHairScience.com

The RKBA issued an alert denouncing Pfleger’ coalition calling them a bunch of “gun grabbers/antigunner.’ Pfleger joined the Sarah Brady Handgun Control group along with the Bloomberg Moms calling for sensible gun laws. However, the progun group pegged Pfleger, as a “long -time anti-gun activists, a militant priest” who “entertains by his special brand of “frothy-lipped lunacy” and compared Pfleger to the ISIS group Pfleger led scores of supporters in the rain on his weekly anti-violence march, saying, “I am speaking peace. The call for gun control has also led Father Pfleger to join elected and law enforcement officials to call for the passage of a law restricting the age of children at gun ranges this after a 9-year-old girl accidently killed her instructor. The accidental death of a gun range instructor at the hands of the girl at the popular “Bullets and Burgers” gun range has sparked shock and anger from Illinois Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-16th), Pfleger, and Chicago Police Commander Ron Holt, the father of slain 16-year-old Blair Holt who was killed on May 10, 2007 while aboard a CTA bus and Mark Walsh, campaign director, Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence. The Uzi was admittedly too much for the girl to handle and when she fired the weapon, she lost control and

the instructor was hit. He later died at a nearby hospital. The family’s lawyer, Kevin Walsh, said the family is ‘devastated.” But, if sensible gun laws were in place like restricting the ages of youth practicing at gun ranges, perhaps Vacca would be alive today. Local elected officials and activists say it’s time for a change. “Given that in Illinois you have to be 18 to purchase cigarettes, 18 to obtain a driver’s license and 21 to purchase alcohol, it would seem only logical that certain restrictions should

In support of the protest against Chuck’s Gun Shop was Chicago police commander Ron Holt who said allowing a child to shoot guns at a range is “inappropriate and a health risk” as evidenced like this and similar stories, he said. Holt said there should be a law passed that includes the type of weapon a youth can fire, age restrictions, body type and understanding of firing a weapon. “It is poor judgment to allow a child to fire an Uzi. I would never let a 9-year-old child of mine handle a real firearm.” However, the NRA and other progun groups encourage children and

Citizens of Chicago are requesting a review of the current policies and practices as they pertain to parking, red light, automated speed enforcement. A petition is being circulated stating, “We further request that the fees, fines and other revenues collected associated with these policies be given a cap, that they would no longer double in amount.” The final warning and subsequent speeding tickets has began for the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras issuing tickets to speeding motorists reported by the City of Chicago. However, overall the Chicago began redlight camera enforcement in 2003, when the city began a pilot program at two locations: Peterson and Western and 55th and Western. Those locations, as well as all subsequent locations, were chosen based on crash data. The Red-light camera enforcement designed to increase safety on Chicago streets has became a prime revenue venture. Fines for violations are $35 for vehicles traveling 6-10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while in a safety zone, and $100 for vehicles traveling 11 or more miles over the posted speed limit. The City also reported where ASE cameras have been installed, the number of recorded speeding events has dropped by nearly two-thirds from the first week of warnings to the third week of ticketing. Through the ASE cameras, the City has issued more than 375,000 30-day warnings, 50,000 final warnings and 8,000 tickets to date. However, Citizens to Abolish Red-Light Cameras (C.A.R.L.C.) “Chicago is a major operator of predatory ticket cameras for the sole purpose of collecting revenue that comes almost entirely from safe drivers. Ed Yohnka of Chicago and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois (ACLU) feels that “Too many of our civil liberties are being lost and the government has unlawful border control of aliens, invasion of electronic surveillance at airports, domestic drone missiles and database spying.”

Many in Chicago feel that red-light traffic cameras are part of this secret electronic surveillance to spy on Chicago citizens. WVON talk show host Mark Wallace wanted to rid the city of red light cameras, and have signed petitions to put the question on the 2014 election ballot. Wallace help organized C.A.R.L.C., a group committed to the removal of red and speed light cameras throughout all Chicago and has staged protests calling for the immediate removal throughout the city of Chicago. “Chicago is an operator of predatory ticket cameras for the sole purpose of collecting revenue that comes almost entirely from safe drivers. Chicago uses deliberately improper traffic light timing and under-posted speed limits so that thousands of very safe drivers who are not causing traffic hazards for anyone will get tickets for the "crime" of safely operating their vehicles said James Walker, a concerned citizen. CARLC said the camera at 99th and Halsted, which has brought in $9 million since it was installed. And unlike a moving violation ticket written by an officer from a municipality, where the city would get a substantial amount of the money from the fine, the bulk of money from red light cameras go to the company that operates them. Redflex Holdings Ltd., the red light camera Australian parent company contracted with Chicago, revealed recently that an internal investigation uncovered evidence that its 10

tained through "illegally-installed" cameras should be reimbursed to ticketed drivers. Senator Duffy said he's preparing to introduce legislation that would push for reimbursement of red light camera tickets. Wallace said the numbers counted into the 30,000 as of yet. Wallace and Newman believe the cameras are illegal and the city lied to citizens about their intent. C.A.R.L.C. feel that the city’s red and speed light camera program is a violation of its citizen’s constitutional rights and is designed solely to increase the city’s financial coffers. In line with C.A.R.L.C., ACLU believes that Chicago does not need a camera on every sidewalk, on every block, in every neighborhood. Rather, our City needs to change course, before we awake to find that we cannot walk into a book store or a doctor’s office free from the government’s watchful eye. “We urge the City to order a moratorium on the expansion of the camera system. Then the City should initiate a thorough and open review of this surveillance system, including whether to reduce the number of cameras. Finally, for those cameras that remain, the City should implement new rules to safeguard individual privacy. After calls to several city officials for comment, Chicago has made it available for drivers to view video of their red light violation on drivers who are unable to pay their red light ticket will have “an arrest warrant issued” and their “license will be suspended.” This can result in an inability to renew your license year old Chicago program appears to have and/or vehicle registration until the fine has been connected to a $2 million bribery scheme been paid. involving a past Chicago city official. ion. Today was one of those ‘light-bulb moments that I want share.” D r . Hughes made reference to a recent visitor to Chicago to speak at a public meeting about the possibility of the designation of Pullman becoming a National Park Service (NPS) site, under the U.S. Department of Interior. NPS director Jon Jarvis made a special visit to APRPPM. Congresswoman Robin Kelly representative of 2nd Congressional district happened to be there. She was accompanying a group of young people and was pleasantly surprised when Director Jarvis arrived. The APRPP museum has requested that it be named as a site in the U.S. House legislation, just as the Pullman factory is named at 111th Cottage Grove. The request is being made, not only to honor A. Philip Randolph and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in perpetuity, but to insure that the museum itself will not be isolated from the pending resources that the NPS designation will bring. The museum has requested they be named specifically instead of proponents of the designation’s current use of the generic term of Black Labor. To date there has been no response to their request. During Director Jarvis’s visit he and Dr. Hughes spoke about the museums’ participation in the development of Pullman as a NPS designation. Dr. Jarvis visit was a clear demonstration of support, especially since he is from Washington D.C., Dr. Hughes said she was humbled by his genuine expression of interest and support of the museums’ work. Understanding how Chicago works, his visit was significant. “However, his

desires may not end up happening if the community does not make their voices heard in Chicago to elected officials.” Said Dr. Hughes. “By the time NPS makes their decision, the financial resources will have already been distributed. The NPS partner with organizations that work on projects and programs in parks and communities around the nation. And in communities to review and approve projects that use federal tax credits to give historic buildings new lives. Among its role is National heritage areas, to promote local history and encourage heritage tourism. Its annual operating budget directed by the President of the U.S. is over $ 3 billion. According to a recent economic Impact study, projected ongoing C h i c a g o benefits are 300,000 visitors each year, 356 jobs, $15 Million in annual wages, and $40 million in sustained economic output. Dr. Hughes says the consensus is for the south side of Chicago, specifically the African American community, “This is a once in a life time opportunity—a Cultural Economic Development CED opportunity, and falls under the broader umbrella of tourism. If the resources are applied correctly, it would be life changing for the north end of the Pullman community. It would benefit not only residents from 111th to 115th but all of Pullman that includes the north end from 103rd to 107th east of Cottage Grove. The northern half of Pullman can be described as an underserved community. Congresswoman Robin Kelly during her visit at the museum said “Creating the Chicago area’s first national park would be a boon to the economy of the South Side and greatly benefit the African American community. A Pullman National Park would transform the South Side and make it into a must-see stop for tourists and residents.” – Harold Lucas, of the Bronzeville Convention and Tourism Council support and capacity building with the museum who has been promoting tourism over the past 25 years said, “In

the past when visitors looked at Chicago’s Tourism maps, it stopped at 22ndStreet. In the last ten years, that began to change— now going beyond 22nd Street, to include the broader south side of Chicago.” Congresswoman Kelly added it makes it even more clear why the cultural institutions like The APRPPM are included and strengthened by the NPS initiative and the resources it will bring. “If you haven’t noticed there have been subtle but consistent changes to Chicago’s south lakefront region’s landscape which is rapidly moving from an industrial region to an outdoor recreational region from Bronzeville to Gary Indiana, and, those changes are occurring at an unprecedented rate.” Said Dr. Hughes. “There are employment and business opportunities that are facing the Southside. If you don’t see them, then you are looking through an old lens.” The African American community must begin to think outside of the box, and get creative, expressed Dr. Hughes. “The jobs are not coming to us therefore we must begin to make our own.” The APRPPM operational base is not funded by government grants or foundations. They have always used creative fund raising efforts to keep the museum going over the years. For the past five years the APRPPM has worked in a collaborative entrepreneurial partnership with the Bronzeville Convention and Tourism Council and the Bronzeville Visitor Information Center; in the operation of the Black Metropolis/Pullman Porter Great Migrations Blues Trail Educational Tour. Letters to the Editor Shocked & disappointed of Karen Lewis’ denunciation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan

A

Dear Editor;

s chairman of the Aldermanic Black Caucus, member of the City Council Latino Caucus, and sponsors of a City Council resolution regarding preference for Chicago Public Schools graduates, we were shocked and disappointed to read Karen Lewis’ denunciation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to give CPS graduates a preference on referral lists for hiring future Chicago firefighters. (“Mayor’s plan for hiring firefighters just a ‘stunt,’” Aug. 19.) Everyone knows that minority representation in the Chicago city work force, especially its police and fire departments, has not been proportionate to our population. Many ideas have been tried to address this inequity over the years. Mayor Emanuel’s proposal is the latest, but it has an important precedent in the efforts of Mayor Harold Washington. In 1986, Mayor Washington proposed that employers in Chicago guarantee a job to CPS graduates. At the same time, he pushed CPS to improve its performance in turning out students with the skills and knowledge to hold a job. His opponents dismissed Mayor Washington’s plan as a bragging-point for his re-election. But cynics aside, his idea promised more opportunity and a brighter future

for Chicago’s minority youth at an earlier time in our city’s history. Mayor Emanuel’s recent proposal for the Chicago Fire Department — which ensures that a mere 20 percent of candidates referred for hiring are CPS graduates — is one of a number of initiatives designed to further open up city hiring to members of all communities across our city. It is already being employed in the Chicago Police Department with no diminution in the quality of our police officers or the public safety they provide. And it follows the city’s recent release from 40 years of federal oversight under the Shakman Decree, which was designed to end the long tradition of city hiring based on politics and patronage. Additional efforts are underway to open up hiring at the trade unions that serve the people of Chicago. Recently, the Carpenters Union embraced an apprenticeship program that will enable more minority youth to obtain the skills and experience to hold those well-paid jobs. Of course, obtaining those jobs requires well-educated students. We are encouraged by the recent progress shown by Chicago Public Schools students, which should help them take advantage of job opportunities and prepare them for future careers. Attendance, test scores and graduation rates are rising. We have more work to do, but we’re finally on the right path. We want to ensure that the city does its part by giving CPS students, who are overwhelmingly AfricanAmerican and Hispanic, an opportunity to work at city

jobs in which we have been historically underrepresented. That’s not a stunt. It’s a strategy for bringing greater fairness and equity to our city. Mayor Washington understood that. Mayor Emanuel does, too. Alderman Howard Brookins, Alderman Daniel Solis

tourists who are interested in Black labor and civil rights history. The tour was recently named as one of the 2016 Great migration centennial celebration projects as one of its legacy projects. The museum has embarked upon an innovative new program, with the creation of a new Conservation outdoor recreation and cultural preservation program. Its focus will be training of youth and young adults for jobs in the Cultural arena, the hospitality industry, and Park Ranger training in anticipation of the NPS designation. For the past 20 years Dr. Hughes has devoted her life’s work to Cultural Economic Development (CED) that includes founding the A Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, now headed by David Peterson Jr.. Peterson had launched a new program division of the museum, titled Museum44, which heavily focuses on entertainment. Peterson said, this division too is doing some innovative CED programming by blending the past with the present. He went on to announce that on Sunday September 14, 2014, Museum 44 will launch one of their signature project the Urban Renaissance Event series. “You will be hearing more about that later.” Said Peterson. Dr. Hughes told Chicago Street Journal that her understanding of the definition of CED didn’t emerge until 2006. From 1990 through 1995, she said she began hearing from others that what she was doing was

D r . Lyn Hughes addressing Pullman becoming a National Park Service (NPS) site, with its director Jon Jarvis visiting APRPPM. under the U.S. Department of Interior. NPS historic preservation. However, she said for her that label did not seem to fit, so she altered that definition and changed it to “Urban historic Preservation.” “That definition sat for a while until I had another ‘Ah Ha!’ moment in 2006, I was forced to pick a topic for my doctoral dissertation. Through my research, I realized that what I had been doing all that time was carving out a niche through which I could inform (teach) the community what the rest of the world already knew and had been capitalizing on for a very long time, Black Culture Sells. A very profitable commodity.” Since the museums inception, efforts have been to accomplish the inclusion and acknowledgment of the northern half of the Pullman population to gain or awaken community pride and civic consciousness in the community. The goal was, to use the history of the Pullman Porters, and their connection to the Pullman Company to make the discovery and their connection to our Cultural Heritage. During the era that span 1865 -1940’s many African American men who migrated from the south ended up living in Bronzeville. While they did not live in the Pullman community, many

n the streets of Chicago you can hear a

melody coming from the Loose Square man “Loose Squares”, on 35th, 47th, Madison Street, Riding the on the Red line, 79th and the Dan Ryan, or at 95th Street, Green line, Blue Line in a smooth low tune, “Loose Squares”; One single cigarette sold on street corners and city public ways; a hustle to make ends meet. “Loose Squares” is such an ode to Chicago and other cities across the nation it’s a guarantee you’ll hear someone singing “LOOSE SQUARES” or a side whisper as you walk by “Loose Squaress”. Cigarettes has been made extremely expensive by state and local taxes. When someone has a nicotine craving and not enough money to buy a pack of cigarettes, who can he or she turn to? Loose Square sales. This not pro smoking but the smoking embarrassment of the jobless coming to an all-time low. Young men and old are selling Loose Squares for 50 cent with no tax, and now a few women are starting to sell them. On the Chicago Transit Authority’s Redline, loose square man by the name of Pitts was stop and ask about the business of Loose Squares vs. Black Wall Street. He paused, grinned, and then he laughed. “You know I am a poet, and you caught me wordless” Pitts went on to say it’s easy to get a profit from selling loose squares. Everybody wants them, so I supply the demand.” Such an American tradition, John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of many in the American revolutionary movement who engaged in smuggling, selling legal products that high taxes made too expensive for many people to afford. Pitts said, “I know a guy that made $100 a day. And another one hustled up enough to get a car.” The high demand for loose squares is largely the result of high cigarette taxes. In Chicago the tax on a pack of cigarettes is more than half of an $11 a pack with State, county and city taxes. ”Them shits cost $4 a pack in VA, and $13 in NYC. You can take the train for $2.25 back and forth. It's quite easy to make $2000 a week if you feel like getting out of bed and hitting them corners.” Pitts proclaim. In Chicago it is illegal to sell single cigarettes or loose squares without charging the tax. People have been arrested or fined for doing so. Pitts said he has a court date coming up for selling them with a fine of $100.00. But still he and others are back on the

13

streets as they sound off the melody “Loose Squares”, operating somewhat non-discreetly taking Ron Carter, a chance of another $100 Publisher and fine. Even stores and gas Editor stations sell them nondiscreetly making a greater profit illegally. And for the stores that sell them, they just do and risk a fine as well. Gas stations, and food and Liquor stores such as Food and More at 246 West 43rd Street was fined $2,040 for deceptive practices and selling loose cigarettes. As a result even the City of Chicago benefit from Loose Squares. Police be ordered to delay a bust on the Loose Square man the same as a delay on certain drug spots. I asked a policeman on 79th Redline about the weed being sold at the station, the Officers responded, he know. “Just as long as they are not being disrespectful selling it.” He went on to say, “There is a time for all busts.” The assessment is people like Pitts are on borrowed time. Tobacco and cigarettes themselves have always been an industry that the companies are challenge socially and in the law. Newport cigarettes known for their grate menthol taste, produced by Lorillard Tobacco Company. have benefit more from the Loose Square man. (I wonder what happen to Kool’s.) So why is Newport the Loose Square choice now perceived as a Black brand? It was not always so. Newport was originally marketed to Whites—only after a deliberate repositioning by Lorillard did the brand become associated with Blackness. Programs were developed to attract Black people to Newport. For example, in 1987, the “Inner City Sales Program” was designed to obtain new smokers and maintain current smokers among Black and Latino young adults with a

high school education or less. To do so, Lorillard was to concentrate sales and marketing efforts “on high potential geographic and ethnic niches” in the Midwest and Northeast. This included a variety of tactics including events, sweepstakes and outdoor advertising. The “Van Program” gave out free samples of Newport cigarettes to encourage Black people (Continued on page 16)

years ago Frederick Douglas in infamous speech said: “Power taken by force, concedes to nothing without demand.” Caucasians Demand & it’s time that WE, do the same thing. The movement died with the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., The Black Panther Party Leadership & everybody else that spoke of freedom & liberation for our people during the late 60’s & early 70’s. They then hand picked false leaders, who were always called on & used, to talk non sense to our people to try & keep us in order, while they plan their devilish plans & then implement them with NO resistance. Thus reversing that damage was put into the hands of White/ Caucasian Policeman, who were part of the conspiracy from the very beginning and, who have absolutely no compassion for the very people that they were supposed to be serving & protect. The men from the different Street Organizations of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s are now conscious, and have now seen the errors of their ways to make a change in the community but have to be careful of being falsely accused of illegal activity, just because of their past. The Police Department & Government Agencies who actually benefit from the violence in the streets, such as the millions of dollars that they receive every year, for trying to stop crimes that they cannot stop because they’re not the ones com-

mitting them. The crimes that they are committing, we the people can’t do anything to stop them, such as them harassing, falsely accusing, arresting, issuing Bonds and then convicting people for the sole purpose of filling the privatized Prison System for Corrections Corporations of America, a Publicly Traded Company, who’s trading these Bonds on Wall Street. We were the first Stock on The Stock Exchange & we still are! They’re giving false tickets, shooting our youth down in cold blood, killing them with choke holds & calling it innocent accidents. If 90% of the community is Black, Hispanic or Mexican, then 90% of The Policeman, Fireman, Contracts & Charter Schools should go to that Community and nothing less. I think we can all agree on this type of Justice. It’s the only way to ensure that our children are protected & give them a sense of belonging, a reason to vote, a reason to inspire to new heights etc. etc. Just as Black Wall Street propose Parity Legislation for contracts, parity for Police and Firefighters.. This is something that must be put into the hands of The Aldermen to competently represent the community that trusted them and elected them based on that trust. And let me say this on behalf of the crooked Black Police because a lot of our people are complaining about them. Here’s a scenario to look at, if you drop a good kid in the midst of Bullies, that good kid is going to show out just like the bullies. Now, once you remove that Bully element from around that good kid, that good kid is going to come back around to his good nature. And the same thing will happen in the Latino Mexican Community.

The Chicago Pre-College Science & Engineering (ChiS&E) Program was founded in 2008 by Chicagoan Kenneth Hill, the nonprofit program is modeled on the awardwinning Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) Hill established there in 1976. ChiS&E, an innovative STEM program serving grades K-5 will move forward with its education programs by holding its first fundraiser on Thursday, September 11, 2014. The theme of the event is “Developing Tomorrow’s Engineers.” It will be held at the University of Illinois@ Chicago, 750 S. Halsted Street from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Hill served as the program’s executive director until 2004 when he retired and relocated to Chicago. The Chicago program is distinguished by a “cyber learning” component where students and parents use computers, cameras, hand-held devices, a website and blogs to document their activities and share them with their classrooms and their families Beginning with seven schools in 2008, the program now serves twice as many schools in low-income communities of color on the South and West sides of Chicago. Among many activities, in 2012 3rd grade students attended a Summer Lab Program at the University of Chicago Lab School where they engaged in handson activities that reinforced or challenged math skills. In 2013, a bridge construction competition among 4th grade students in the structural engineering track was held at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Darryl D. Bright is a man certain of his mission. The father of seven year old Duajuan M. Bright, a student at Spencer Technology Academy on the West side, he has been involved in the ChiS&E program since Duajuan was in kindergarten. Duajuan took to the program like a fish to water. “He loves it,” Bright declares. “To see my son learning these things at a very early age is something.” He’s also seen a marked improvement in Duajuan’s regular class work due to the ChiS&E program.

Darryl D. Bright (below) the father of seven year old Duajuan M. Bright, a student at Spencer Technology Academy on the West side, he has been involved in the ChiS&E program since Duajuan was in kindergarten.

Chicagoan Kenneth Hill, founded the Chicago Pre-College Science & Engineering (ChiS&E) Program in 2008 with seven schools, the program now serves twice as many schools in low-income communities of color on the South and West sides of Chicago.

Duajuan is learning about matter and physical change and other scientific concepts that Bright himself says he didn’t learn until the 4th or 5th grade. As a result, Duajuan earned six A’s and a B on his recent progress report. The program has also strengthened their bond. “Homework requires parental involvement. You have to be there with your child,” he says. Because of his passion for the program Bright began recruiting other parents’ participation. Spencer School Principal Dr. Sean Jackson recognized his enthusiasm and made it possible for Bright to do what he does very well and receive a stipend for it. As a parent recruiter, he can be found holding orientations at schools and special events wearing the ChiS&E tee-shirt and touting the program.

He’s recruited five families to date and plans to bring in more; he has a waiting list of parents who want to participate. In 2014 5th grade students spent an entire month studying math with math professors at the University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign and U of IChicago. The program has been lauded by many including former CPS Chief Education Officer Barbara Eason-Watkins who encouraged its development in Chicago. Recently ChiS&E was one of only 30 organizations out of a pool of 1130 applicants, nation-wide, to be awarded a 3-year $450,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) for its work in “developing and implementing trans-

here are various ways to buy nowadays. You as buyer must know that you will have many buyer competitors and that you must be in the frame of mind to make an offer especially if you like the home. If you are not paying 100% cash, your pre-approval letter from a lender is necessary. Your state of mind has to be set, and ready to buy. You may or may not obtain your very first property interests due to multiple offers but don't get discouraged or give up. The effort as well as thought has to be there to make your buying experience work. If you choose to purchase a REO and there is a need to do extensive work, you will need a 203K mortgage for this work. According to a “Realty Times” August 12th article, one advantage to buying an REO is that you don’t have to pay cash or have a cashier’s check right away as you would have to have at a foreclosure REO auction. As a real estate agent, I would represent you in handling the sale which would be on the open market. A shortsale is not so short and the bank as a

What type of stores should also be in the area? What other advantages are there to this plan by the Mayor? The point I am making is we must seize the opportunity, not just complain when others do.” Muhammad went on to point the genious behind the Nation of Islam’s Three Year Economic Blueprint that the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan is reestablishing. “We should at least have business people with a public voice in the discussions. In fact, there should be discussions on really business community development.”

“The Case for Banning Payday Lending: Snapshots from Four Key States,” The report,

underscore how payday lenders charge triple-digit APR loans that trap millions of people in long-term cycles of debt. The report– released by California Reinvestment Coalition, New Economy Project (formerly NEDAP), Reinvestment Partners, and Woodstock Institute–calls on states and federal regulators to end all forms of payday lending. Joined by more than 100 groups from the four states, they submitted detailed comment letters that support guidance proposed by two federal banking regulators, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which would curb payday lending by banks. The comment letters also called to further strengthen their proposed guidance by prohibiting banks from reaching into customers’ accounts to collect on loans capping fees and interest. sought and secured employment as Pullman Porters with the Pullman Company, in the town of P u l l m a n , now referred to as the community of Pullman. Pullman Porters were a part of the onboard crew, which included Dining Car waiter, creating a standard of excellence in the hospitality industry. In 1925 The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (AKA) Pullman Porters formed the first African American labor union in America, and in 1937, were the first black union to win a collective bargaining agreement with a major corporation which was the Pullman Company. www.aprpullmanporter museum.org Dr. Hughes stated “The discovery of this component of our history, enabled me to define a niche that we could use to introduce African American people to the umbrella of Tourism, and to what has become known as Cultural Economic Development (CED).” She has build the museum over years to see the manifestation of my work and the growth of her work as a component of economic development. Speaking candidly stating “Black Culture Sells’. However, and unfortunately, during this time what I also realize is that we have sat by and watched everyone else benefit from the packaging and selling of our cultural product.” Hughes thought back to the play, ‘Pullman Porter Blues’ debut in 2013 at The Goodman Theatre. “The Theatre did a fantastic job of selling Black culture in of the wonderful production of Pullman Porter Blues.” She said. “I am certain their box office was very happy. The question is how did the Black community benefit?” Dr. Hughes paused for moment, and said, Chicago has 77 communities and promotes 51 for its tourism plans, each with their own mix of historical sights and attractions, arts and culture, dining, nightlife, shopping, and most importantly, personality. “This is one of those teachable moments.” Said Dr. Hughes. “I came to the realization that Black culture sells and that we (African American People) should be a primary beneficiary. Of course it takes work, but it is not rocket science. This allows us to control the packaging and dissemination of our own cultural product. What is needed is the education/teaching on what CED is—so that we create and develop the required vehicles to distribute that product.” Why? Because Black Culture sells! In the YouTube video titled Produce Something Or Be Wiped

APRPPM L-R David Peterson Jr. President of APRPPM, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Assoc. Dir. Midwest Regional Office Sandra Washington, Dr. Lyn Hughes Founder APRPPM, Dir. NPS Jon Jarvis. Harold Lucas before expressing tourism is big business.

Out, Dr. Claude Anderson revealing statement, “In almost every city in America, there is a China Town, a Greek town etc. The customers who patronize the business in those communities are not all Asian or Greek, Get the point? While many ponder over doing the same thing and feeling guilty about even thinking of such an idea for the African American community, “Virtually everyone else is going to the bank making deposits from the African American platform.” Said Dr. Hughes. “At this stage of my life I don’t have another 20 years to dedicate to working in the trenches but I can teach, if one listen.” Lucas says it is big business. Chicago Tourism reports by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Don Welsh, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, cited that Chicago's record 2012 visitation resulted in records in several key areas welcoming 46.37 million visitors. Travel expenditures continued to surge in 2012 to a record $12.76 billion. Total tax revenue from domestic and overseas visitor spending increased by 11 percent in 2012 setting a record at $805.6 million. Employment in leisure and hospitality sector exceeded the 2007

pre-recession peak, and all jobs lost during the recession have been fully recovered. Since 2010, Chicago has benefitted from a 6.4% increase in tourism-related employment, adding 8,000 tourism related jobs. In 2012, Chicago moved up to 9th in International tourism. Mayor Emanuel set a goal of 50 million visitors annually by 2020. Additionally, he has set a goal of being among the top 5 US cities for international visitation by 2020. “Most communities have figured that out, except the African American communities”. Said Lucas. “For Pullman b e c o m i n g a National Park is not only about architecture, although real estate development is apparent. It can be about entertainment venues, and development, opportunities for small businesses that support tourist traffic, restaurants etc.” “There are voids out there.” Said Dr. Hughes. “Start thinking about ways to create your own jobs; think about ways to fill some of those voids even if collaborations and partnership are necessary to make it happen.” To contact the APRPA call: 773.331.6146

hicago-based rapper, Derrick “Lottery” Hardy is not your average rapper. Lottery blends metaphors with analogies, personifications and etcetera so smoothly; your mind will be in a daze of confusion… and relaxation at the same time. Although, Lottery narrates tales of numerous critical subjects, he also knows how to compliment a lady in his hit single, “Shelltoes”. Yes, Lottery has definitely come a long way throughout the years from working 9-to-5 to make ends meet to displaying his light upon the world as a sign that this is just the beginning of his destination. In his interview, Lottery discusses the inspiration behind his rap career, his muses that inspire him to keep rapping, his advice to upcoming artists and everything in between that digs into the mind and soul of a rising star.

By Dana Rettig SSJ: Tell us the idea behind your rap career/ new LP, Go Music. What advice do you have for potential rappers? Lottery: Go Music is an album that you can just ride down Lakeshore Drive and vibe to. I grew up on Common Sense's Resurrection album and that album inspired me to make this one. I just talk about Chicago from my view point. The advice I give other rappers is forget what anybody else says "DO YOU!" Stay

on your hustle cause you cant fail unless you quit! SSJ: Describe the highs/lows of being an artist. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing at this instant? Lottery: Its a lot of highs and lows. You have naysayers who will tell you that you aren't talented enough or you are wasting your time, you have the periods where there is no food in the fridge and you have these high bills to pay, and you are always wondering "What more do I have to do?". Glad I got my degree because I encourage everyone to have a side hustle. I would probably be in someone's league (NBA, MLB, or NFL) if it wasn't for music........Maybe I messed up lol. SSJ: Name four people who have musically influenced you over the years. Describe two characteristics about the artists that make you say, “He/She has raw talent!” Lottery: Four People are Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Walter Payton and Kanye West. You may say "Why is Walter Payton on the list of musical influences?" but Walter's work ethic was so great that it can influence you in all walks of life. All of the above named have that strong work ethic but another common theme is that they all speak out about what they believe in regardless of how their views are looked upon. SSJ: If you could turn back the hands of time, what would you have done differently in the music industry and why?

Lottery: Nothing. No regrets. Everything is a life lesson. SSJ: Compare music from the past to present. How come the media concentrates more on the trivial things (examples: video vixens, cars, houses, money, etcetera) than what is imperative (examples: the lack of occupations, the lack of afterschool programs, homeless, teen pregnancy, gangs, and etcetera)? Lottery: Different eras. We are now living in the "ME" era, where everyone is concerned with themselves and lack the compassion of others. Most artist aren't thinking about how their words can influence a world in a positive impact. They instead are looking to make a hit and get paid. I aunt mad at em tho. Get it how you live pimpin.......... SSJ: Who do you believe is a positive influence amongst his/her community and why? Lottery: Me! I want people in Chatham to look at me as a positive role model who cares about his community. I want my life to serve as a lesson to others. SSJ: Where can people reach you via website at this moment? Lottery: twitter.com/chilottery

Bronzeville – The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) presents artists Stephen Flemister and Krista Franklin, in & the invisible & the unbelievers running thru – September 27. SSCAC located at 3831 South Michigan. This exhibit deals in notions of the digital portrait, the anonymous and the hybrid borrowing its title from poet Amiri Baraka’s prose. Both artists are alumni of Chicago’s Columbia College and their work makes its return to the region with an exploration of the modern portrait through the lens of contemporary digital culture. Flemister is a mixed media artist from the south side of Chicago and has exhibited in various solo and group shows in galleries such as Dittmar Memorial Gallery at Northwestern University, Hyde Park Art Center, and has been a featured artist of HyPa and the Hennessey Artistry Tour (2010). According to Flemister, “remixing today’s modern technology with traditional studio art, my work concerns itself with the phenomena of ‘profiling’ and the concept of the virtual identity.” Franklin’s work is centered on the intersection of the literary and the visual, often exploring the conceptual concerns of Afrofuturism and AfroSurrealism. She is the co-founder of 2nd Sun Salon, a community meeting space for writers, visual and performance artists, musicians and scholars. She has held residences at Cave Canem, A Studio in the Woods and Arts + Public Life/Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture at the University of Chicago. The closing reception/artist talk will be held Saturday, September 27 from 2-5 p.m. For more information on upcoming shows and the 75th Anniversary of the SSCAC, please visit www.sscartcenter.org or follow the SSCAC on Facebook and Twitter. Continue from page 24 mentary perspective, however it seem to now be from the perspective of those forced to live the street life due to the poverty inflicted on the black community by America's institutions of racisms. Even though rap had evolved into a more gritty and violent art form, it still was a positive force for the black community, by shedding light on many issues that news media simply refused to address such as police brutality and how drugs affect families, as well as showing the consequences of living the street life. Rap, often times affectionately labeled "gangsta rap" continued to evolve, as more gritty rappers emerged from the west coast, east cost, as well as the southern states. Rap even was taken to a new plateau with the emergence of Tupac Shakur, whom exemplified the seeming duality of rap, showcasing its social conscience side and its gritty street life side. However as time went on, more and more rappers, often referred to as "studio gangsters", seem to come out and just glorify and promote the negative aspects of street life, without giving the same social commentary and showcasing the consequences of street life. Whereas rap once made it cool to be knowledgeable about African history and culture and be proud of it, now rap made it cool to sell drugs, shoot other black people and disrespect black women, and it only continues to get worse. Rap no longer produces any KRS1s, Furious Fives, or Tupac Shakurs, but rap is turning out dozens of studio gangsters daily. Why is this? Well depending on who you ask, you'll windup with different answers. Some will say, that rap has just evolved to mirror our culture, others will say that rap has influenced our culture into its current self destructive state. I'm inclined to believe the latter reason. There has been a rumor for years, that major executives and other wealthy powerful people in the white community who were fearful of the positive effects rap was having on the black community, all got together to form a plan to manipulate things so that rap would instead be a force of negativity to the black community. Now to some that is just a crazy conspiracy, myself however, I've seen pretty strong evidence to suggest it is true. I wont go into all of that, nor will I say that is solely to blame for rap's betrayal of the black community, even though its a major factor and a root factor in my opinion. I will just say this, I feel rap has betrayed the black community, because many aspiring rappers have forgotten the true meaning and purpose of what rap was....to be a relevant and entertaining form of social commentary. We no longer have many aspiring rappers who have the guts to make a song like the message, who have the guts to put knowledge and African pride in their music like Public Enemy, who have the guts to evolve from the THUG into the AFRICAN WARRIOR like Tupac, who have the guts to refuse a big paycheck for making negativity promoting music. Now there are a few rappers who are making socially conscious music, such as Jasiri X and Sa Roc, however they are mostly underground artist who have garnered loyal followings off YouTube. The fact is, while I admire rappers like them very much, there is just not enough of them right now. Not enough rappers willing to have some real integrity, not enough rappers who are doing it out of love and not a paycheck, not enough real rappers with pride for themselves and their community. Which is why I believe, RAP HAS BETRAYED THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

The bio of Mr. Hoodhope…..Born Mondrea Vining in the seventies in Chicago Illinois. Deep because chi town has a notorious history of corruption and gansterism. Home to AL Capone famous for murderous plots involving illegal alcohol distribution known as bootlegging. Although Capone was from New York he laid his crown down in Chicago. The infamous chairman Larry Bernard Hoover built his reputation on windy city streets. Oprah Winfery and the list goes on. The honorable Elijah Muhammad built the N.O.I. headquarters in the hood of Chicago The Honorable minister Louis Farrakhan resides there and so does president Obama. Now we are introducing the next big thing from Illinois commonly referred to as the ill state. A place where two governors’ democrat and republican have been convicted of criminal acts and sent to the pen back to back. Police have been convicted of torturing black men framing them and sending them to death row. Judges, preachers and even teachers get exposed for what they really are in this colorful city. Now a beacon of hope has arrived for the hood in Chicago a city currently having the highest murder rate.

I

Rahman Fleming n my honest humble opinion, mainstream rap has betrayed the black community. From its very inception, rap music was the visceral voice of the black community, particularly with the song "The Message" by GrandMaster Flash and the Furious Five, released in 1982. With this song and others like it that followed, rap become the social commentary of the black community. Rap was the medium, and rappers were the reporters. Rap music had many different genres, such as party rap, comedic rap, and even battle rap, but social commentary rap always seemed to be the standout form. This form of rap, literally began to change the minds and collective

Chicago Street Journal

Raised on the city streets now named Chiraq. His mother was young when she had him and so was his dad. When crack cocaine

was introduced in the eighties the chi was one of the hardest hit by this mind numbing spirit killing substance, and it swallowed his father whole. Who has since recovered and strives on a path of redemption and reconciliation. By the age of 10 real ill was his street name and he was recruited by the insane Vice Lords .BY age 15 he had rank in the Vice Lord mob and had already been incarcerated several times and was headed to juvenile to serve what was originally supposed to be a

year but misbehavior caused him to serve 3 ½ years. Constant involvement in criminal activities which included robbery, using drugs ,selling drugs, shooting people lead to him being in and out the pen and him getting shot in the neck and the bullet remains in his back as a constant reminder of God’s grace. His transformation occurred in the belly of the beast similar to Malcolm x and the real rick Ross who is also a hood hope affiliate. In 1999 he received 30 years for armed robbery, home invasion, possession of category 4 weapons use of armed force etc….. During this period of incarceration he faced many challenges such as clashes with guards as well as other inmates, he also lost his mom in 2005 to cancer while he sat in the hole downstate, his brother was gunned down on the mean streets of the Chi In prison He became a jail house lawyer and spent most of his time in the hole. He became addicted to reading books and was captivated by the stories of comrade George Jackson, Angela Davis, martin Luther King, Santa Shakur etc…. He made a vow that he would return to the hood to serve the communities he once aided in destroying..(Finally heeding his calling). In January 2014 he was released from the beast and provided the opportunity to live up to his word, Name change from real ill to

real deep. Started a record label called HoodHope and a movement called hood hope movement all geared toward unity ,based on stopping the violence, youth empowerment and economic opportunities. Real deep became the coordinator of a youth center located on Madison and Keeler in the heart of Chicago. Moving at God speed he traveled from that location to expand the mission of promoting peace and prosperity. He is motivated by many factors at the top of that list is his son Prince. Real Deep has been involved in marches and has affiliated himself with various organizations such as west side health authority, he has marched for peace, put on stop the violence hip-hop shows outside in the hood, has involved with many organizations in efforts to increase the peace . Truly a gifted writer and speaker, he also raps. And in hip hop circles it may be considered blasphemy to state this, but the only being it is safe to compare him to would be the late great 2pac Shakur who is his favorite artist. In one of his verses he boasts that if Pac was still living he would be saying the things real deep says. Now that is deep! Be on the lookout. Hope is coming to a hood near you. conscious of the black community. In the late 80's and early 90's rappers such as KRS1 and groups such as Public Enemy, used their music to not only shed light on the plight of black African people in America, but also this form of rap began to teach and uplift the black community. I personally remember how rap at this time, made it cool to know our African roots and be proud to wear an African medallion, and be knowledgeable about African history. Matter fact if you didn't have knowledge, and have an African medallion, you were not cool, and part of the lame unpopular crowd. Rap began to change with the debut of the group N.W.A. Rap still had its social com(Continued on page 23)
