DEAR CSO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, AS I LOOK BACK ON THIS YEAR, I am struck by all that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association has accomplished, not just as players and presenters of magnificent music, but as true global citizens. Under the leadership of its tenth music director, Riccardo Muti, the CSO spread its artistry and good will to audiences far beyond the walls of Symphony Center—from the sanctuary of the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side to the Great Hall of the Philharmonia in St. Petersburg, Russia. Maestro Muti and his world-class musicians never failed to bring down the house. I was delighted to be able to join the Orchestra in Russia and Rome during its historic six-city Russia & Italy Tour in April, during which I saw firsthand what a powerful impact such an artistic and cultural undertaking can have. I am so grateful to Bank of America for serving as the Global Sponsor of the CSO and to the Sage Foundation and its president, Melissa Sage Fadim, for generously sponsoring the performances in Italy.
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
The CSO continued to touch lives closer to home this year as well, especially through the work of the Institute for Learning, Access and Training, whose myriad programs bring symphonic music to those who might otherwise never experience it. Whether through the Orchestra Explorers program, which provides classroom materials that introduce young students to classical music and the extraordinary musicians of the CSO, or through the numerous outreach initiatives led by Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, our Citizen Musician extraordinaire, the Institute used music to engage more than 200,000 people last year. It is this kind of “thinking big” that keeps the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the top of its game and patrons filling the seats at Symphony Center, whether it’s to hear Maestro Muti and his Orchestra give a riveting performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony or to present the world premieres of daring new works by Anna Clyne and Mason Bates, the CSO’s Mead Composers-inResidence. Thanks to those and other engaging programming, I’m pleased to report that we experienced record ticket sales and record fundraising results this year. With that bit of good news, it is with pride and gratitude that I step down after six years as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. It has been an enormous pleasure to help guide this institution, a true Chicago treasure that has admirers the world over. As I welcome Jay Henderson as the new chairman, I can assure him that he will never be wanting for support. The CSO’s Trustees, Governing Members, and members of the Women’s Board, the League and the Overture Council have been with me every step of the way as we explored innovative ways to reach new audiences and build our global brand. We could not have done it without the steadfast support of the many donors, foundations, corporations, sponsors and patrons who are dedicated to our mission.
I also would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Deborah Rutter, whose leadership and friendship have been invaluable to me for the last six years. She and her staff do much of their work behind the scenes, but they play an integral role in assuring the CSO’s success. It has been a delight and a privilege to serve as chairman of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. I look forward to following the continuing achievements of our stellar Orchestra, whose visionary artistic leader, Riccardo Muti, is sure to propel it to even greater heights.

DEAR FRIENDS, WHEN I LOOK BACK ON THE CSO’S EXHILARATING 2011/12 SEASON, it is with an enormous sense of pride in the rich diversity and unparalleled quality of the more than 200 events we presented. From the imaginatively staged Beyond the Score performances and the ground-breaking MusicNOW series to the concerts celebrating the important legacy of Gustav Mahler, it was truly a season that offered something for everyone. Such inclusive thinking is a key component of the vision of Riccardo Muti, who, in his second season as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s 10th music director, stayed true to his mission of honoring the history of our great Orchestra while investing in the future of music, all while inviting the larger community, both at home and abroad, to join in as active participants. Maestro Muti’s four residencies spotlighted the extraordinary chemistry that exists between our artistic leader and his worldclass musicians, which resulted in glorious music making throughout the season. Our music director’s special approach to voices was on full display as he took on such powerful choral works as Carmina Burana, the Cherubini Requiem and Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre, with exceptional contributions from the Chicago Symphony Chorus, the Chicago Children’s Choir and many fabulous soloists. (You will read about many other season highlights in the pages that follow.) Our Keys to the City Piano Festival, curated by CSO friend and frequent guest artist Emanuel Ax, was a huge success. The three weeks of events presented piano music in all shapes and forms— duos, sonatas, concertos, jazz—and featured an amateur piano competition, symposia and the chance for ordinary folks to tickle the ivories of pianos placed in public spaces. The festival gave us the rare opportunity to examine the personal connection to piano music that all of us share. We are so grateful to Judy Istock, CSO Life Trustee, whose passion for the keyboard dates back to her youth, for her generous support as lead sponsor of the festival.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The Institute for Learning, Access and Training continued its important work of creating and sustaining connections to music for individuals and communities by sharing the tremendous musical resources of the CSOA. As part of the Citizen Musician initiative, Yo-Yo Ma, the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, collaborated for the first time ever with soprano Renée Fleming, the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s creative consultant, to put on a surprise lunchtime concert for visitors to the Thompson Center in Chicago’s Loop. The two superstars, along with area choral students and members of the CSO, wowed the crowd while also spotlighting the importance of arts education and music in our daily lives. The year was a big one for traveling too, as we further established our global brand with a pre-season tour to Salzburg, Paris, Lucerne, Vienna and other European cities, winter concerts in California (with Maestro Muti and his musicians winning spectacular reviews) and the pièce de résistance: the CSO’s trip to Russia and Italy in the spring. The CSO had not visited Russia since 1990, under Music Director Sir Georg Solti. It was such an honor for the Orchestra to be invited by the State Department to serve as cultural ambassadors, bringing music to the concert halls of Moscow and St. Petersburg and a whole host of Citizen Musician activities, including performances at a rehabilitation center and an orphanage, out into the community. We are so grateful to Mike Hurley, U.S. Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, for putting it all together. Our visit to Italy was no less thrilling, as our Italian maestro was greeted as a conquering hero during magnificent performances in Rome, Naples, Brescia and Vienna. Special thanks to our friend Melissa Sage Fadim and the Sage Foundation for her support of the Italy portion of the tour, to our great Global Sponsor, Bank of America, for its generosity throughout, and to the intrepid patrons who followed their treasured orchestra from Russia to Italy with love.
We could not possibly accomplish all that we do without our many loyal volunteers, donors and staff, who are so committed to the Orchestra’s mission. Thank you for your dedication. “Thank you” can never share the appreciation I have for all that Bill Osborn has given to the CSO, not just in these past six years, but in the more than 15 years he has served this organization. He is the epitome of a great man and a great leader—wise, generous, warm, humble, visionary, compassionate, insightful. Bill’s touch has reached every aspect of the CSO’s activities. He has attended countless events, responded to every request, represented the CSO publicly and privately, and counseled our team on everything from bank covenants to political advocacy. He has even been seen serving meals on charter flights! Thank you, Bill. We have loved working with you. Your Chicago Symphony Orchestra is so much stronger due to your unique and extraordinary leadership.

TREASURER’S REPORT DEAR FRIENDS, OPERATING REVENUES AND SUPPORT advanced 12.5% to $71.8 million. Overall ticket sales increased to $21.3 million. For CSO subscription concerts, capacity utilization was 82%, as single ticket sales remained flat with the previous year. Importantly, the Association again set a record in annual support, raising $28.2 million. While operating expenses, at $73.1 million, outpaced earned and unearned revenues, the Association enjoyed recordbreaking fundraising results and strong ticket sales, to end with a $1.39 million operating deficit for the year. The Association’s financial condition remains solid, despite the impact of market’s volatility on investments and pension plan and swap obligations. Endowment investments are $233 million at June 30. Under the oversight of our Investment Committee, our long-term returns continue to rank among the highest of comparable funds with 5 and 10 year returns in the top 23% and 11%, respectively. Bequests and gifts to the Endowment were slightly more than $7 million. The generosity of our donors continues to reinforce our ability to present programs of the highest artistic quality. We are most grateful to all of our generous contributors. The entire CSO family—musicians, trustees, concertgoers, donors, volunteers and staff—continue to strongly support the activities of the Association and our internationally acclaimed Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Our collective commitment to sustainable financial strength, matched with artistic excellence, will ensure that this worthy Chicago institution continues to prosper. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as Treasurer for the past three years and I look forward to continuing the CSO’s legacy of outstanding artistic excellence and sound financial performance as your new Chairman.

CSO Music Director
RICCARDO MUTI
IN HIS SECOND SEASON AS MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, RICCARDO MUTI FURTHER ADVANCED HIS MISSION OF EXTENDING THE REACH OF THE ORCHESTRA LOCALLY, NATIONALLY AND GLOBALLY WHILE MAINTAINING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE. TO KICK OFF THE 2011/12 SEASON, Maestro Muti once again honored his pledge to bring music to the widest possible audience by leading a free community concert at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. Before an overflow crowd of more than 5,000 people, the Orchestra performed Verdi’s Overture to Giovanni d’Arco (Joan of Arc), followed by Ibert’s Flute Concerto, with CSO principal flute Mathieu Dufour as soloist, and Tchaikovsky’s powerful Symphony No. 5. “We are here to bring you our feelings of love and friendship, through music,” Muti told the audience, which showed its appreciation for the Orchestra’s special night of music making with both attentive listening and extended resounding ovations. Maestro Muti went on to lead the CSO in 10 weeks of subscription concerts, which included four multiple-week residencies and first-time appearances on the Afterwork Masterworks, Beyond the Score and Symphony Center Presents series.
In the fall, Muti celebrated the CSO’s rich legacy by presenting several programs with important historical resonance. The concerts celebrating Franz Liszt’s Bicentennial featured the same program—including Liszt’s thunderous Piano Concerto No. 1 and A Faust Symphony—that the CSO performed 100 years ago in commemorating the centennial of the composer’s birth. To mark the 100th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s death, Muti recreated the final concert program Mahler ever conducted, with performances of Martucci’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian) and three other works by Busoni, Bossi and Sinigaglia. The music director also continued to demonstrate his commitment to introducing new works to audiences by presenting the world premieres of three commissioned works. In January and February, Muti led the Orchestra in first performances of Alternative Energy by Mason Bates and Night Ferry by Anna Clyne, the CSO’s Mead Composers-in-Residence, and Dmitri Smirnov’s Space Odyssey, all of which he subsequently conducted on tour programs. Under Muti’s leadership, the CSO’s musical footprint continued to extend far beyond the boundaries of Symphony Center, with several highly acclaimed tours. The memorable excursions included a pre-season six-city visit to Europe, a week-long winter tour of San Francisco and three other California cities, and, as a grand finale, a historic trip to Russia and Italy in the spring. Last fall, Muti was awarded the 2011 Birgit Nilsson Prize by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a festive ceremony held at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Maestro Muti was chosen as 2011 laureate by an international panel of five operatic experts from the countries where Birgit Nilsson, the renowned soprano, was most active during her career. Muti was recognized for his extraordinary contributions in opera and concert, as well as for his enormous influence in the music world both on and off the stage. He was also the recipient of the Knight of the Grand Cross First Class of the Order of St. Gregory by the Great Pope Benedict XVI, which is the highest of papal honors, as well as the McKim Medal from the American Academy in Rome.

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
DEAR CSO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, THE 2011/12 SEASON featured scores of dazzling performances by our Orchestra under the leadership of Riccardo Muti, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s 10th music director.
soloists under the baton of guest conductor Cristian Macelaru and a video montage that transported the audience to pre-World War I Vienna and Berlin.
The cornerstone of the season was An Exuberant Era: 1911/12, a multiseries, multigenre journey that explored the musical life of a century ago, at the time of Gustav Mahler’s death, when composers were writing both traditional and groundbreaking works reflective of the changing world around them. It was an opportunity not only to honor Mahler’s contributions to the orchestral canon with performances of his Symphonies No. 1, 4 and 6 and other great works, but also to showcase the boldly unconventional pieces of such composers as Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Schoenberg during this influential time in history.
In addition to Pierrot lunaire, the CSO gave its first performances of eight other works in the 2011/12 season. These included Mozart’s Symphony No. 20 in D Minor, Rota’s Symphonic Suite from The Leopard, Shostakovich’s Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti, and Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre, which featured tenor Alberto Mizrahi, cantor of Chicago’s Anshe Emet Synagogue.
One highlight of An Exuberant Era was a Beyond the Score presentation of Schoenberg’s theatrical chamber work, Pierrot lunaire. Creative Director Gerard McBurney’s unique multimedia exploration featured four actors, soprano Kiera Duffy, five CSO

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
DEAR CSO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, MAESTRO MUTI ALSO BROUGHT HIS DRAMATIC INTERPRETATIONS to two dynamic choral works presented during the season: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Luigi Cherubini’s Requiem in C Minor. Muti led four electrifying performances of the Orff cantata, in which the Orchestra was joined by the incomparable Chicago Symphony Chorus and Chicago Children’s Choir. In three performances with the Orchestra and Chorus of the rarely performed Cherubini work, Muti demonstrated why he is known as one of the foremost interpreters of the Italian composer’s repertoire. During the 2011/12 season, a broad spectrum of the world’s most distinguished soloists returned once more to perform alongside the Orchestra. They included pianists Emanuel Ax and Mitsuko Uchida, violist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who also serves as the CSO’s Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant. The Orchestra also attracted an impressive roster of leading conductors who were eager, as always, to collaborate with our world-class musicians. Among the stirring performances: Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the world premiere of James Matheson’s CSO-commissioned Violin Concerto with CSO .
principal second violin Baird Dodge as soloist; Charles Dutoit conducting the Strauss tone poem Don Quixote, with CSO principal viola Charles Pikler and principal cello John Sharp as soloists; Trevor Pinnock leading two of our special Keys to the City Piano Festival programs; and former CSO Principal Conductor Bernard Haitink on the podium for Haydn’s landmark oratorio, The Creation, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Over the last year, Maestro Muti appointed several new musicians to the CSO roster, including associate concertmaster Stephanie Jeong, principal clarinet Stephen Williamson and David and Mary Green principal bass Alexander Hanna. Also new to the Orchestra are first violin So-Young Bae, second violin Sylvia Kim, viola Weijing Wang and cellos Karen Basrak and Daniel Katz. They join our stellar ensemble of musicians who are consistently hailed as one of the finest orchestras in the world.

KEYS TO THE CITY PIANO FESTIVAL
THE 2011/12 SEASON BUILT IN A ROUSING CRESCENDO IN THE SPRING WITH THE KEYS TO THE CITY PIANO FESTIVAL, WHICH CELEBRATED THE UNIVERSAL APPEAL AND WIDE-RANGING REPERTOIRE OF THE 300-YEAR-OLD INSTRUMENT. CURATED BY INTERNATIONALLY CELEBRATED PIANIST EMANUEL AX, the multifaceted three-week festival offered performances across all genres—solo recital, chamber, jazz, and piano four-, eight- and sixteen-hands, to name just a few—as well as free symposia exploring the evolution of the instrument, films, and opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to sit down at the keyboard and perform. With concerts spanning multiple series and programming thoughtfully put together, the festival was a true extravaganza of music making and community engagement.
activity as members of the community were treated to recitals, seminars, films, demonstrations and “first piano lessons” taught by instructors from the Illinois State Music Teachers Association. A recurring theme throughout the day was the piano etude, from Chopin’s most familiar melodies to the astonishing and pyrotechnic additions to the form by Marc-André Hamelin. Earlier that week, thanks to the generosity of Steinway & Sons, pianos were placed in 11 public spaces across the city, where they welcomed impromptu performances by first-timers, amateurs and professionals alike.
Kicking off the festival on May 23 was an unforgettable concert showcasing a host of notable pianists. Led by conductor David Robertson, the night featured acclaimed jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut as soloist in Gershwin‘s Rhapsody in Blue; Orli Shaham, Benjamin Hochman, Orion Weiss and Ax performing Mozart‘s Concerto for Two Pianos, with a different pair of pianists playing each movement, in round-robin style; and two orchestral favorites by Ravel—the Mother Goose Suite and La valse—to open and close the program.
Keyboard luminaries appeared throughout the three-week festival, including Stewart Goodyear performing Falla’s sultry Nights in the Gardens of Spain with Ludovic Morlot and the CSO; Jorge Federico Osorio playing etudes by Ponce; Jeremy Denk teaming up with violinist Stefan Jackiw in an innovative recital exploring the role of “collaborative pianist”; and, closing the festival, Stephen Hough in a solo recital of works by Beethoven, Scriabin, Liszt and Hough’s own composition, broken branches.
A highlight of the festival was the Free Chicago Piano Day on May 27, hosted by actor and accomplished amateur pianist David Hyde Pierce, who, along with Ax, performed the world premiere of Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky’s Three Worlds for two pianos, and also performed in an eight-piano, thirty-two-hand version of Stars and Stripes Forever. Throughout the day, Symphony Center hummed with
We are so grateful to Judy Istock, CSO Life Trustee and piano lover, for her leadership support of the Keys to the City Piano Festival. Mead Composers-in-Residence
MASON BATES & ANNA CLYNE
IN 2011/12, MASON BATES AND ANNA CLYNE COMPLETED THEIR SECOND STELLAR SEASON AS CSO MEAD COMPOSERS-IN-RESIDENCE, AND IN JANUARY 2012, MUSIC DIRECTOR RICCARDO MUTI ANNOUNCED THAT HE HAD EXTENDED THEIR TENURES UNTIL THE END OF THE 2013/14 SEASON. MAESTRO M UTI CITE D TH E “U N IQU E VOICES” the composers are contributing to the classical music canon and lauded the excellent work they had done as curators of the MusicNOW series. In addition, he expressed a desire to give Bates and Clyne more time to deepen the collaborations they had begun with various partners throughout the Chicago area. Such outreach plays an integral role in the CSO’s ongoing commitment to forging partnerships with today’s leading artists and arts institutions. This past season, the CSO commissioned orchestral works from Clyne and Bates that received their world premieres under Muti’s baton at Symphony Center. First up, on February 2, was Bates’ Alternative Energy—featuring sounds recorded at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, and special percussion instruments made from car parts. The world premiere of Clyne’s Night Ferry, inspired by the music and life of Franz Schubert, followed on February 9. Both compositions were enthusiastically received by Chicago audiences; Muti and the CSO also performed both pieces during their February 2012 California tour to similarly rave reviews. In addition, both composers continued their work as curators and hosts of the MusicNOW series alongside Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot. Championing innovation and creativity, the series celebrates the breadth of contemporary music today. This season, the popular tradition of postconcert receptions featuring electronic music remained, and Bates and Clyne redefined and expanded the traditional concert experience by moving to a digital program note format. Instead of receiving a paper program, concertgoers were treated to a short video from the composers that took them inside the piece and made exceptional use of the state-ofthe-art facilities at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. Bates
and Clyne also continued their groundbreaking programming, including special collaborations with Angolan-born composer and instrument builder Victor Gama and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Both Composers-in-Residence have made work in the greater Chicago community—outside the walls of Symphony Center— a priority. Clyne has been a regular visitor to the Illinois Youth Center in Warrenville as part of the CSO’s ongoing work there with partner Storycatchers Theatre; this past season, she led an intensive composition workshop for a small group of young women. In June, Bates hosted the second Chicago incarnation of Mercury Soul, a unique combination of club scene and concert hall. Moving to the larger concert venue Metro this year, Mercury Soul combined dynamic live performances from members of the CSO with diverse DJ sets from such notables from the electronica scene as illmeasures, Kate Simko and Bates himself. The composer also once again performed for the Women’s Board of the CSOA as DJ for ReMix II: Tuned Up, the board’s signature fundraiser, and initiated POST, a relaxed lounge event at Symphony Center held after CSO programs. MusicNOW receives funding through a leadership grant from Irving Harris Foundation, Joan W. Harris. Major support is also provided by Cindy Sargent and the Sally Mead Hands Foundation. Mason Bates’ and Anna Clyne’s commissions were generously underwritten by the Louise Durham Mead Fund for new music.

Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant
YO-YO MA
THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S JUDSON AND JOYCE GREEN CREATIVE CONSULTANT, YO-YO MA, WORKING IN TANDEM WITH MUSIC DIRECTOR RICCARDO MUTI, PROVIDED CREATIVE GUIDANCE ON A MYRIAD OF IMPORTANT INITIATIVES WHILE ALSO SERVING AS AN INSPIRATION TO MUSICIANS, STAFF AND AUDIENCES. THROUGH PERFORMANCE, Ma provided musical leadership and direction on innovative program development for the Institute for Learning, Access and Training as well as for CSO artistic ventures. Muti and Ma’s joint leadership champions the vital importance of making music and the essential role it plays in civic and cultural life. The cornerstone event of Ma’s tenure this season was the CSO’s collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago on March 19. Joining forces with soprano Renée Fleming, the Lyric’s creative consultant, and ballet great Damian Woetzel, Ma visited Lake View High School in the morning, dropping in on classes and performing for a school-wide assembly. After the visit, Ma; Fleming; Woetzel; choral students from Lake View, the Chicago High School for the Arts and the Merit School of Music; and CSO musicians gave a surprise lunchtime performance in front of hundreds at the James R. Thompson Center downtown. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn was in attendance and spoke about the importance of the arts in our daily lives. Photos and videos from this event went around the world in days, communicating the excitement of the CSO’s ongoing Citizen Musician initiative to an international audience. During 2011/12, Ma continued to be Citizen Musician’s most visible ambassador. He discussed the need for safe places for young people to explore their talents and abilities during a visit to Alternatives, Inc., a youth community center in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, and brought a diverse array of performing artists with him to entertain and educate students at the Telpochcalli Elementary School in the Little Village neighborhood.
Building on the success of pilot programming in 2010/11, Ma also spearheaded the partnership between the Institute and the University of Chicago Charter School in Woodlawn that took flight in 2011/12. The program, conceived by Ma, established a foundation for lifelong engagement with the arts by offering workshops with musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and CSO, in-school ensemble performances and free tickets for concerts at Orchestra Hall. On December 13, UCW junior Jerlan Payne performed an original poem with Ma accompanying her. Their work together became a model for other students who participated in an elective course pairing poetry with music performed by Civic musicians. Venturing farther afield, Ma and Civic musicians attended the annual DePauw Discourse at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where Ma spoke about the importance of citizen musicianship and participated in a number of performances with Civic members. Ma also provided valuable behind-the-scenes guidance to a number of other Institute initiatives, including the Once Upon a Symphony concert series for young children, and served as a representative of the CSO in advocacy meetings with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard about the Chicago Cultural Plan and the CPS Arts Plan. In addition to his work with the Institute this year, Ma performed on the Symphony Center Presents Chamber Music series with CSO musicians, gave a special concert with the Assad Brothers that celebrated the music of Brazil and joined the CSO for two weeks of subscription concerts in May 2012 with conductors Carlos Miguel Prieto and Ton Koopman.

Chairman, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 2006 –2012
WILLIAM A. OSBORN
BUSINESS VISIONARY. CIVIC LEADER. PHILANTHROPIST. FRIEND. THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION proudly recognizes and thanks William A. Osborn, retiring chairman of the Board of Trustees. In the 15 years that Bill has served on the CSO’s Board, his inspired leadership and generosity of spirit have transformed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. Fellow board members—along with the countless Chicagoans who have been touched by Bill’s civic and philanthropic support—know him as a tireless leader and mentor, always the first to champion ambitious initiatives and always giving credit to others for work he has carefully managed behind the scenes. Bill’s many achievements as chair of the Board cannot be overstated. His accomplishments are varied and wide-ranging, from playing a pivotal role in bringing Maestro Riccardo Muti to Chicago, to creating a more diverse and vibrant Board, to his support of the Citizen Musician initiative. Among his proudest achievements is bringing symphonic music to audiences, both inside and outside of Orchestra Hall, who would not ordinarily be exposed to it. Bill, along with Yo-Yo-Ma, the Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, were among the first to champion innovative programs within the CSO’s Institute for Learning, Access and Training, which are making tremendous strides in engaging new and more diverse audiences at home and abroad. Under Bill’s leadership, the CSOA has made significant progress to ensure its financial future, enjoying increases in all revenue generating areas: single ticket sales, subscriptions and major growth in fundraising revenues. Numbers alone, however, do not tell the full story of Bill’s impact on the Association. The lasting relationships he has built with musicians, individual donors, organizations and corporate sponsors have enhanced the stature of the CSO across the U.S. and around the world. As a highly regarded figure in business and civic circles in Chicago and elsewhere, Bill has attracted key leaders in the world of business and finance to the CSO community, consequently securing this institution’s sound footing in a time of economic uncertainty.
In addition to his lengthy service on the CSO’s Board, Bill serves on the boards of the Museum of Science and Industry, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Northwestern University, where he chairs the University’s capital campaign. He currently is the director of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago Inc., and is past chairman of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago. He also has served on the boards at Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and the Chicago Urban League. In addition to his numerous civic commitments, Bill’s extensive business and financial career spans 40 years at Northern Trust, where he held a variety of leadership positions, including Chief Executive Officer. Although Bill retired as CEO of Northern in 2007, he remains the chairman of the Board of Directors. Additionally, he serves on boards of many Chicago-based businesses, including the Tribune Company, Abbott Laboratories and Caterpillar. The musicians, staff, board members and friends of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra salute William A. Osborn for his wise and generous counsel these many years.

2011/12 Highlights
THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING, ACCESS AND TRAINING THE 2011/12 SEASON WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING, ACCESS AND TRAINING AT THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AS IT CONTINUED TO EXPAND ITS DIVERSE PORTFOLIO OF PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES AND FURTHER ITS GOAL OF TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN MUSIC. UTI LIZI N G TH E EXTRAOR DI NARY M USICAL R ESOU RCES of the CSO Association, the Institute was able to engage more than 200,000 people across the broadest possible ethnic and socioeconomic spectrums, with a focus on young people ages 3–30. Thanks to the visionary leadership of CSO Music Director Riccardo Muti and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, the Institute saw tremendous growth of its Citizen Musician initiative, which seeks to sustain and expand the role of music making in civic and cultural life. The concept of “citizen musicianship”—introduced by Ma and embraced by the CSOA— inspired members of the CSO and Civic Orchestra to participate in more than 30 Citizen Musician events throughout the Chicago area and also in Russia during the CSO’s April tour. Two flagship events punctuated a robust menu of Citizen Musician offerings: the full Orchestra launched the 2011/12 season on September 22 with a free concert led by Maestro Muti at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side for a standingroom-only crowd of more than 5,000 people; and on March 19, Ma, Lyric Opera Creative Consultant Renée Fleming, Aspen Institute Arts Program Director Damian Woetzel, musicians from the CSO and choir students from around Chicago presented a pop-up performance advocating for the importance of arts education in schools for hundreds of people in the James R. Thompson Center downtown. Also, in order to feature, celebrate and bring greater visibility to the Citizen Musician initiative and the people who lead it, the CSOA refined and re-launched citizenmusician.org in April. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the only pre-professional training program affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, experienced several milestones this season. Civic members not only participated in a program rich with time-honored orchestral training through their work with some of today’s most soughtafter conductors (Muti, Sir Mark Elder, Susanna Mälkki, Sir Andrew Davis, Jaap van Zweden and Cliff Colnot), they also took part in a curriculum that seeks to respond to the rapidly evolving world of music in the 21st century. With Principal Conductor Colnot at the helm, Civic musicians learned how to become professional orchestral musicians while cultivating their ability to collaborate with others, develop teaching artistry
and exercise citizen musicianship. Civic members presented six free full-orchestra concerts in Orchestra Hall and performed at locations across the city, including Alternatives, Inc., a youth center in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood; the Harris Theater for Music and Dance; the University of Chicago Charter School in Woodlawn; the South Shore Cultural Center; and in Greencastle, Indiana, as part of DePauw University’s annual DePauw Discourse. The Orchestra also celebrated its first-ever collaboration with the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in a performance of select acts of Mozart and Puccini operas. Civic concluded the season by participating in the CSO’s Keys to the City Piano Festival with an experimental, whirlwind tour of piano concertos led by pianist Emanuel Ax and Beyond the Score Creative Director Gerard McBurney. Building on a 92-year-old CSO tradition, concerts for children and their families delighted thousands of people with performances that introduced the joy and excitement of live classical music through innovative programming and collaboration with some of Chicago’s premier arts organizations. Once Upon a Symphony, for children ages 3–5, celebrated its first full season with two adaptations of popular children’s stories, The Ugly Duckling and Jack and the Beanstalk. Additionally, OUAS was presented for the first time outside of Symphony Center, at Holy Family School in Chicago’s Homan Square neighborhood. Three Very Special Promenades and CSO Family Matinee series programs introduced classical music and the symphony orchestra to students in grades K-3, families with children, and students of all ages with special needs: Magical Movements featuring DanceWorks Chicago; Musical Mayhem featuring Lookingglass Theater Company; and The Composer is Dead featuring composer Nathaniel Stookey as narrator. To conclude the season, the CSO offered four Youth Concerts for students in grades 4–8, showcasing the music of two “Classical Heroes,” W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn, and 2011 Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Youth Auditions Winner, cellist Johannes Gray. Bringing the season to a close, in May, the Institute proudly offered a variety of programming as part of the CSO’s Keys to the City Piano Festival.

SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS
SYMPHONY CENTER PRESENTS SHOWCASED AN EXTRAORDINARY VARIETY OF MUSIC DURING THE 2011/12 SEASON, WITH MORE THAN 45 CONCERTS OFFERED ACROSS ITS MANY SERIES: CHAMBER MUSIC , ORCHESTRA , PIANO , JAZZ , MusicNOW AND SPECIAL CONCERTS. THE FIVE-CONCERT Symphony Center Presents (SCP) Chamber Music series featured some of the world’s most revered musicians, including violinist Hilary Hahn and Joshua Bell in separate recitals and the Australian Chamber Orchestra with soprano Dawn Upshaw performing the exciting jazz-inflected music of Maria Schneider. The series continued its tradition of pairing our world-class musicians from the CSO with stellar visiting artists in a program featuring pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma along with musicians from the Civic Orchestra. A master class and a subsequent performance at Benito Juárez Community Academy in Pilsen connected the concert to our Citizen Musician initiative. The series concluded with a recital examining the role of the collaborative pianist in an innovative Keys to the City Piano Festival program crafted by pianist Jeremy Denk with special guests violinist Stefan Jackiw, CSO cellist Katinka Kleijn and tenor Nicholas Phan. The SCP Piano series again featured 10 recitals by some of the world’s reigning keyboard virtuosos. Highlights included the continuation of Paul Lewis’ five-concert, multi-season exploration of Schubert’s late piano works (1822-1828) in two separate performances; the return of Mitsuko Uchida to the recital series after a six-year absence; and the Symphony Center debut of French pianist David Fray. Also performing in 2011/12 were Richard Goode, Evgeny Kissin, Kirill Gerstein and Leif Ove Andsnes. The series figured prominently in the Keys to the City
Piano Festival with performances by Stephen Hough and a recital showcasing piano works for four hands led by Festival Curator Emanuel Ax performing along with Orion Weiss, Benjamin Hochman and CSO pianist Mary Sauer. In October, concertgoers were treated to superb music making by the Budapest Festival Orchestra with conductor Iván Fischer as part of the SCP Orchestra series, which continues to bring the finest ensembles to Chicago from across the globe. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Charles Dutoit and pianist JeanYves Thibaudet performed in January, and the San Francisco Symphony celebrated its centennial with its Music Director, Michael Tilson Thomas, in a program drawn from their Mavericks Festival featuring the music of Henry Cowell, Charles Ives, and a premiere by John Adams featuring the St. Lawrence String Quartet. In 2011/12, Symphony Center Presents again hosted one of the most comprehensive and widely acclaimed jazz series in the country. The 10-concert series not only featured some of the biggest names in jazz, but was also marked by creative pairings and collaborations such as octogenarian drummer Roy Haynes and trumpeter Roy Hargrove paired with contemporary ragtime composer Reginald Robinson, and a spellbinding collaboration between the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Trey McIntyre Project, which marked the first dance performance ever on the SCP Jazz series. Artists also brought new projects including

Nicholas Payton and his recently assembled Television Studio Orchestra and an intimate duo session with Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman. The series continued to highlight acclaimed guest artists including pianist Keith Jarrett with his longtime trio partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, as well as double-bills that featured John Scofield with Ravi Coltrane and Dee Dee Bridgewater with the Russell Malone Trio. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis returned for a residency consisting of a SCP Jazz series concert that celebrated his 50th birthday along with two additional special concerts and educational activities at Symphony Center and in Chicago Public High Schools. Jazz figured prominently in our Keys to the City Piano Festival with stellar performances by Danilo Pérez and duo Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes, and the series concluded with a remix of Fats Waller’s music by pianist Jason Moran in his contemporary tribute to the great Harlem stride pianist. The 2011/12 SCP season also showcased a wide variety of the world’s finest musical artists and ensembles with Special Concerts that brought vocal, jazz, folk and holiday performances to the stage of Orchestra Hall. The season opened with an October weekend that saw the return of Grammy Award®-winning bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding, and the annual appearance of “the greatest mariachi in the world,” Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra made their Symphony Center debut the following weekend in an innovative combination of gypsy music and
rock ‘n’ roll. Returning to the series were the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the a cappella choral group Chanticleer with their annual holiday concerts, and Chicago native Kurt Elling with special guests Anat Cohen and Regina Carter in a Valentine’s Day jazz concert. Also appearing and exemplifying the diversity of performers were the BoDeans, The Chieftains, Joan Baez, the Soweto Gospel Choir and Keith Jarrett in a solo piano concert. In April, while the CSO toured Russia and Italy, Symphony Center Presents offered eleven concerts, including many of today’s musical celebrities starting with tabla master Zakir Hussain and his Masters of Percussion and finishing with Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma in a Viva Brazil program with guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad and pianist Kathryn Stott. SCP also presented the stylish and eclectic group Pink Martini in their Symphony Center debut, flamenco superstar Paco de Lucía, and Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in two special concerts: an afternoon Jazz For Young People® performance exploring the music of Duke Ellington and an evening performance with vocalist Natalie Cole and newcomer Cécile McLorin Salvant. During the tour period, over 22,000 tickets were sold to these eleven SCP series and special concerts.

Reaching Beyond Symphony Center
CSO RESOUND, RADIO & TOURS
WHILE CONCERTS AT SYMPHONY CENTER FORMED THE FOUNDATION OF THE 2011/12 SEASON, THE ORCHESTRA WAS ABLE TO REACH FANS THROUGH A VARIETY OF OTHER AVENUES AS WELL: CSO RESOUND, THE CHICAGO SYMPHONY’S OWN RECORDING LABEL; THE CSO RADIO BROADCAST SERIES; AND SEVERAL TOURS THAT TOOK OUR MUSICIANS AROUND THE GLOBE. CSO RESOUND RELEASED Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Live in September 2011, making it the 13th album for the awardwinning label. The album was named the Traditional Classical Album of the Year by iTunes, Album of the Week by WQXR and New Release of the Week by WFMT, which also included it in its Best Recordings of 2011. It also reached the No. 2 bestselling spot in iTunes’ Classical Store and No.14 on Billboard’s Classical Chart. Critics lavished the album with praise, with Fanfare magazine writing, “All hail to a disc that features the CSO brass players in all their refulgent splendor.” And from SA-CD.net: “The clarity of articulation from the Chicago Brass players is astonishing.” This CSO Resound recording was made possible through the generous support of the Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund. A winter partnership with iTunes led to 5,300 iTunes gift cards being used for CSO Resound albums, resulting in a large increase in digital sales in those months. Throughout the 2011/12 season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra continued its presence on the national airwaves with the CSO Radio Broadcast Series. The weekly series is syndicated across the globe to more than 400 stations in 44 states and territories, reaching 480,000 listeners each week nationwide via the WFMT Radio Network. Each program in the series is available for an additional six weeks on cso.org after its broadcast. In 2011/12, individual Radio Broadcast Series programs received an average of 2,000 pageviews, and the “Listen and Watch” section of the website received more than 250,000 pageviews.
With lively and engaging content, designed to illustrate the stories inside the music and provide insight into programmatic themes of the CSO’s concert season, the broadcast series offers a new and distinctive approach to classical music radio. The broadcasts include recorded concert performances by the CSO; produced segments featuring interviews with musicians of the Orchestra, guest artists and composers; and explorations of the CSO’s rich catalog of commercial recordings, as well as its illustrious history in Chicago. We are so thankful for The Grainger Foundation’s generous support for the CSO Radio Broadcasts. The CSO’s tours this season continued to establish the Orchestra’s national and global brand. A pre-season European tour took Music Director Riccardo Muti and his musicians to Salzburg, Lucerne, Luxembourg, Paris, Dresden and Vienna. In February, they headed to California for concerts in San Francisco, Costa Mesa, Palm Desert and San Diego, winning wonderful reviews along the way. The last tour of the season was especially important: to Moscow and St. Petersburg in Russia, making their first appearance there in two decades at the invitation of the United States Department of State, and to Maestro Muti’s beloved home country, Italy, where he and his Orchestra thrilled audiences from Rome to Ravenna. The tours provided an added benefit as well: concertgoers hoping to hang on to some of the musical magic were able to purchase CSO Resound albums at the concert venues throughout the Orchestra’s travels.

DEVELOPMENT
SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT, INSPIRING IMPACT
OUR SEASON, OUR CITY
“I have always loved classical music. It is a great satisfaction and honor to be able to support one of my favorite and long-admired orchestras. In these times of fast-moving technology and fast-paced living, it is important to remember that the treasure of live classical music is one that we should nurture and encourage in every way possible. Supporting the CSO helps ensure that this art will be around for years to come.” —HECTOR FERRAL, ANNUAL FUND DONOR
CSO donors made significant investments that ensured the success of the CSO’s memorable 2011/12 season. Through concert sponsorships, more than a dozen major donors generously provided $1.25 million to support the CSO, Maestro Muti, and the Orchestra’s exciting collaborations with internationally renowned conductors and guest artists.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra today stands at the pinnacle of the classical music world. Alongside the Orchestra in all its achievements stand the CSO’s passionate and dedicated donors. CSO donors are integral to the life of the institution. They are visionary and inspiring forces behind our programs. Thanks to their extraordinary commitment, the CSO achieved a profound positive impact on communities in Chicago and around the world during the 121st season. The generous support of CSO donors totaled a groundbreaking $28.2 million during fiscal year 2012—an unprecedented success that marked a 12% increase over the previous year and a 40% increase over two years. Generous individual donors provided more than $17 million in support. Corporate support of the CSO increased 18.6% over the previous year. 2012 marked the second year of Bank of America’s threeyear partnership with the CSO as the Orchestra’s exclusive Global Sponsor. As Global Sponsor, Bank of America provides unprecedented support for the Orchestra at home and abroad, enabling the CSO to foster its international reputation and share the distinct power of its programs with audiences around the world.
The Irving Harris Foundation and Joan W. Harris inspired the CSO to engage a broad and dynamic cross section of new music lovers with the MusicNOW Challenge Grant. This funding initiative was established to garner support for the rising contemporary music series, MusicNOW, and to share the work of CSO Mead Composers-In-Residence with new audiences. In its first year, a combination of longstanding and new donors exceeded the $100,000 challenge goal. The 2011/12 season was capped by the Keys to the City Piano Festival, a city-wide celebration and exploration of a single, familiar, beloved instrument. The festival was collaborative, inclusive, dynamic, and fun—and generously supported by Judy and Verne Istock. Their commitment to sharing music across the city was embodied in this three-week festival, curated by Emanuel Ax and supported by a large cast of friends. The Grainger Foundation provided major support for the CSO Radio Broadcasts. CSO Radio brings the music of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to millions of listeners across the country and around the world on more than 400 radio stations and through online streaming and downloads.

CITIZEN MUSICIANS “The CSO has a long-standing legacy of deep and meaningful investment in the community, utilizing the arts as a mechanism to better society. The Orchestra’s programs that focus on children and families create a ripple effect in our culture; through programs that bring young people together with music, we change the way we think about music in our lives, our families, and in our society. The CSO continues to show us that every child, especially those in under-resourced neighborhoods, deserves to have music in their life, and music has the power to change the way our children look at the world. The Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust is committed to bettering the lives of our communities and families, and is proud to support the work of the CSO and its world-renowned musicians.” —KRISTIN CARLSON VOGEN FOR BANK OF AMERICA AND JAMES L. ALEXANDER, CO-TRUSTEES ELIZABETH MORSE GENIUS CHARITABLE TRUST The Citizen Musician movement is an expression of the CSO’s deep commitment to sharing the power of music. The generosity of the many CSO donors who have supported Citizen Musician activities is expressive of the same. The Green Family is visionary in their support for the CSO, for the Citizen Musician movement, and for the work of Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma. Citizen Musician is rooted in that belief that music is universal in its power to have a positive impact on the development of a child, the life of an individual, the state of a community, and the condition of the human soul. The generosity of the Green Family ensures that the CSO can practice this belief and promote this ideal. Support from a wide range of foundation and corporate partners in Illinois and across the country enable the CSO’s music and musicians to have a meaningful impact on diverse audiences each year.
➤ The Robert R. McCormick Foundation committed three years of support for the Citizen Musician initiative. ➤
The Elizabeth Morse Genius Charitable Trust committed three years of support for Adventures in Music, Youth at Risk and Once Upon a Symphony, ensuring vulnerable children have access to these programs.
➤ The Boeing Company generously supported Once Upon a Symphony, Adventures in Music and MusiCorps, ensuring that citizen musicianship reached audiences of all ages. ➤
The ITW Foundation’s five-year commitment is enabling musicians and teaching artists to engage incarcerated youth in an inspiring program that builds dedication, commitment and a sense self-worth.
➤ Leadership support for Citizen Musician activities is generously provided by The Negaunee Foundation.

GLOBAL ESTEEM
DEDICATION
“My wife, Dora, and I always enjoy the opportunity to travel with the CSO. Hearing how they sound in different halls and seeing again how well our orchestra is received internationally. The CSO and Maestro Muti demonstrate again and again that they are the top orchestra in the world.” —R. JOHN AALBREGTSE, CHAIRMAN OF THE GOVERNING MEMBERS
“It’s all about the music. I’m a volunteer because in my life I came to love this kind of music. There are so many fabulous people in The League, leaders in the Chicago community. Anything you want to do, there’s a place for you here.” —LINDA NEUMANN, PRESIDENT THE LEAGUE
Vital to the CSO’s towering global reputation is the ability to touch audiences around the world with the distinctive power of the CSO in live performance. Our donors understand the significance of touring, and they revel in the esteem that it brings to our city and our orchestra. We especially acknowledge Bank of America for its support of the Orchestra’s overseas tours. When the CSO toured California, it affirmed its position as our nation’s finest ensemble. Dean and Rosemarie Buntrock generously supported the tour and graciously welcomed Maestro Muti and the CSO to the west coast. As the CSO embarked on a tour of cultural ambassadorship to Russia at the invitation of the U.S. State Department, an international consortium of eight corporate sponsors supported the project. Among them were Coca-Cola, John Deere and, notably, Amsted Rail and its partner companies, with the advocacy of CSO Trustee Robert Reum. Together, these sponsors celebrated high-profile, sold-out concerts that united cultures through the common language of music. Finally, Maestro Muti made his triumphant return to Italy with his Orchestra, and our donors made a memorable experience possible for the Maestro, the Orchestra and the people of Italy. The tour was generously sponsored by the Sage Foundation, Melissa Sage Fadim, president. Further support was provided by ITW, which sponsored the CSO concert in Brescia.
A vital part of the orchestra community, CSO volunteer and donor affinity groups support the guests, audiences, administration, and friends of the Orchestra year round. The League of the CSO, the Women’s Board, the Overture Council and the Governing Members generously gave of their time, talent and resources this year to secure the CSO’s legacy of world-class programs. Combined, the four groups welcomed 137 new members to their ranks during the 2011/12 season. Volunteers also helped raise more than $1.8 million through their annual gifts, membership dues, and fundraising events, including Symphony Ball, ReMix II, and Corporate Night. CSO audiences and supporters are an integral part of the life of our orchestra and our institution. Our dedicated donors foster our mission, build our legacy and increase our impact as we strive to become the most heard, most engaged orchestra in the world. The CSO’s success is a testament to the spirit of our city, the commitment of its people, and the generosity of our donors. We thank our many donors, sponsors, friends, and partners, whose confidence in and commitment to the CSO inspires and engages audiences, serves communities and transforms lives.
