2017 annual report
CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION
RICCARDO MUTI Zell Music Director
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra remains a testament to the triumph of globalization in a polarized time. The many countries represented by the members of this great orchestra, our esteemed Italian music director Riccardo Muti, the international roster of guest soloists and conductors, and the various composers of our repertoire represent a vibrant cultural crossroads. The language of music is universal, and the voice of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra speaks volumes. In this annual report, we measure the achievements of our 126th season and reflect on new possibilities to ensure that this crucial dialogue continues.
Riccardo Muti, our remarkable Zell Music Director, is a leader who champions the transformative power of music. He imparts that fervor to members of the Orchestra, who in turn communicate that energy to our audiences. From cycles of the symphonies of Brahms and the piano concertos of Beethoven to Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible and the overtures and choruses of Verdi, Muti and the CSO made formidable statements that touched hundreds of thousands of listeners during the 2016/17 season. The Orchestra also embarked on its sixtieth international tour to Europe and returned home with universal accolades. To see our orchestra represent Chicago so compellingly, so eloquently, at home and abroad, fills one with an enormous sense of pride.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many advocates of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association who have channeled their passion for music into meaningful support. The Trustees, Governing Members, Women’s Board, League, and Overture Council are models through their leadership and gifts. The generosity of donors, foundations, corporations, sponsors, and patrons is equally essential to the life of the CSOA. I also extend my sincere thanks to the amazing staff led by President Jeff Alexander who work daily to facilitate all that takes place at Symphony Center and beyond.
We often hear of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra “sound”, but the Orchestra also has a voice—one that represents humanity and reminds us of music’s power to transform and inspire, especially when executed with the highest standards of artistic excellence. As you review this report, notice the many ways the voice of the CSO impacts the lives of individuals, our community, and the world.
helen zell Chair, Board of Trustees Chicago Symphony Orchestra AssociationThe 126th season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was a reminder of the breadth of performance and community engagement activity carried out by one of the most active and successful performing arts organizations in the world today.
Maestro Muti began the season with a celebratory conclusion of the Orchestra’s 125th anniversary by recreating the CSO’s first concerts from October 16 and 17, 1891, for the annual Symphony Ball. His ten weeks of subscription programs with the CSO included Brahms’s complete symphonies; a celebration of Prokofiev’s 125th birthday, featuring the first-ever performance by the CSO and Chicago Symphony Chorus of the Ivan the Terrible film score, with Gérard Depardieu as narrator; three of Beethoven’s five piano concertos with Yefim Bronfman, Radu Lupu, and Mitsuko Uchida; the CSO’s first performances of Giuseppe Martucci’s orchestral song cycle, La canzone dei ricordi, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in her CSO debut; and the world premiere of a CSO commission by Mead Composer-inResidence Samuel Adams. As passionate advocates of the civic value of arts and culture, Muti and the CSO also gave a free community concert at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side. Every concert was delivered with the beauty, nuance, flair, and depth for which the Muti/CSO combination has come to be known.
Maestro Muti also led the CSO on its sixtieth international tour: a seven-city, five-country journey during which they performed eleven concerts for captivated audiences across Europe. More than 150 members of the international press documented triumphant returns by Muti and the Orchestra to renowned halls, including the Musikverein in Vienna and Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as well as their debut at newly constructed venues, including two concerts at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany, as part of the hall’s opening-week festivities. The reviews from the tour were uniformly enthusiastic, with accolades such as, “performed by the orchestra with a perfection that was almost superhuman. Power, no doubt, runs in the Chicago Symphony’s veins,” (El país) and, “The CSO once again proved why it’s the stuff of legend, an epic written, for ten years running now, by the baton of Riccardo Muti” (Le Monde). Additionally, members of the Orchestra and Muti took time from their busy travel schedules to engage with members of the community in hospitals, schools, and civic centers.
The 2016/17 season saw the release of two CSO Resound recordings: the first of Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre and Shostakovich’s Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti and the second of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony, which upon release has been one of the fastest selling CSO Resound titles. The CSO holds the distinction of having performed the U.S. premiere of the piece in 1904 and has long been admired for its Bruckner interpretations.
The Chicago Symphony Chorus was featured prominently on several exceptional programs. Its season included poignant performances of Brahms’ A German Requiem, works by Handel, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and Fauré’s Requiem. Director Duain Wolfe prepared the Chicago Symphony Chorus for two CSO debut performances conducted by Maestro Muti: Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible and Boito’s Mefistofele. The latter was part of the sensational season finale program that also included performances of opera choruses by Verdi that were described as possessing the, “sort of tonal fullness and variety, expressive commitment, and forward Italian diction you seldom hear in stage productions of Verdi operas,” by the Chicago Tribune
Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek completed their second year as Mead Composers-in-Residence by curating four dynamic programs for the MusicNOW series, including five MusicNOW commissions. Special concerts celebrated the eightieth birthday of Steve Reich and a retrospective of the work of the late Pierre Boulez, the CSO’s former Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus.
Under the visionary leadership of Riccardo Muti and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, the Negaunee Music Institute created opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Its programs reached 45,000 students, teachers, and families and provided training to more than a thousand young musicians. Highlights of the season included a special Concert for Peace at St. Sabina Church on the South Side of Chicago, performed by members of the CSO, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Yo-Yo Ma, and a particularly dynamic Family Concerts series.
The Symphony Center Presents series drew strong audience numbers through its wide ranging programs performed by visiting soloists and ensembles. The SCP Jazz series honored legendary musicians in 10 outstanding concerts. In addition, the CSO at the Movies series saw a 12% increase in sales, with all performances of Amadeus selling out. Our volunteer Latino Alliance continued to expand its membership and a new African American Network was formed, which ended the season with 925 members. These efforts and our array of programs led to a first-time ticket buyer increase, with 15,000 patrons making their first visits to Orchestra Hall during the 2016/17 season.
All of our accomplishments are possible because of the inspired dedication, artistry, and skill of our Music Director, musicians, and staff members, and the unyielding and generous support of our Trustees, thousands of loyal donors, patrons, and volunteers who support the Orchestra’s mission. I would also like to thank CSOA Board Chair Helen Zell for her commitment to the artistic and fiscal health of the CSO and her passion for symphonic music and for Chicago.
I hope you enjoyed the life-enriching years of music making and community engagement that was the 2016/17 Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents and Negaunee Institute season—one that inspired music lovers in the City of Chicago, across the country via our national radio broadcasts, and around the world.
Operating revenues in fiscal year 2017 totaled $70.8 million, reflecting annual philanthropic support of $25.2 million, ticket sales of $22.2 million, and other revenues of $23.4 million, which includes our traditional 5% endowment draw along with performance fees, media and royalties, facility rentals, and Symphony Store. Throughout the year, the Association monitored costs carefully, directing resources to ensure music making and programs of the highest artistic quality. Operating expenses increased slightly by $0.7 million to $72.2 million. As a result, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra ended fiscal year 2017 with an operating deficit of $1.4 million. Support from our generous donors strengthens our ability to present world-renowned music. Our endowment and other investments, together with beneficial interest in trusts, has grown to more than $373 million as of year end. Total assets were nearly $500 million, while net assets totaled $267 million. This strong base provides the foundation for artistic excellence, audience development, and community initiatives that are at the heart of what the Chicago Symphony Orchestra does. Our liabilities include long-term bonds payable, which remained flat at $145.5 million.
The Association continues to face financial challenges posed by our operating environment. We are dedicated to facing them head on. Ticket sales for the current 2017/18 season reflect continued audience excitement about our programming. At the same time, we remain focused on cost control in order to return to a balanced annual operating budget.
We appreciate your continued involvement with and support of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. You enable us to advance our commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement. Coupled with sound fiscal management, together we can ensure that this great Chicago institution thrives for many years to come.

season celebration
The CSO’s 126th season began with outstanding concerts honoring the Orchestra’s legacy of artistic excellence and community engagement.
On October 13, 2016, Riccardo Muti led the CSO in a free Concert for Chicago at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. This concert marked the second appearance for Muti and the CSO at the church since 2011. The CSO performed an all-Beethoven program and drew an audience of more than 3,000 to applaud the start of the season.
Later that week, the Orchestra celebrated its 125th birthday, the culmination of the prior season’s 125th anniversary celebration. On October 15, 2016, the CSO presented the annual Symphony
Ball concert and gala. This special event was a re-creation of the very first CSO program performed October 16 and 17, 1891. Pianist Daniil Trifonov was featured as soloist on a program including Wagner’s A Faust Overture, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, and Dvořák’s Husitská Overture. The Women’s Board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra hosted the Symphony Ball Gala to celebrate the birthday and history of our illustrious ensemble.
In 2016/17, Maestro Muti spent three weeks on tour and 10 weeks in Chicago with the CSO, leading concerts during five residencies at Symphony Center. Concerts were met with critical and audience acclaim, and showcased the artistic excellence of the Orchestra and some of the greatest repertoire in classical music.
During the 2016/17 season, the CSO celebrated the 125th birthday of Sergei Prokofiev with a series of programs showcasing his orchestral compositions, including works for ballet and cinema. In February 2017, Muti led the CSO in the Orchestra’s first-ever performances of Ivan the Terrible. The concert performance of the music for this bold and epic film was highlighted by actor Gérard Depardieu as Ivan, Yasen Peyankov as narrator, vocal soloists Sasha Cooke (mezzo-soprano) and Mikhail Petrenko (bass), and the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Chicago Children’s Choir. The Russian composer’s work was featured in four additional CSO Main programs led by guest conductors Charles Dutoit, Emmanuel Krivine, Neeme Järvi, and James Gaffigan.
Also in February 2017, Muti led Members of the CSO in a special performance of Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross at Holy Name Cathedral. The concert was attended by more than 1,000 people and included participation by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago.
In an unusual look into the work of one of classical music’s greatest composers, the CSOA presented a year-long exploration into the musical mind and experience of Ludwig van Beethoven. Concerts on the CSO Main and SCP Orchestra series and other series offered audiences the opportunity to hear all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos in one season. By presenting these pieces together throughout the year, programs ushered audiences through an exploration of the composer’s changing relationship
with his primary instrument as he became increasingly deaf. Muti led the CSO in three Main series programs: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with Yefim Bronfman; Concerto No. 3, featuring Mitsuko Uchida, and Piano Concerto No. 5, Beethoven’s Emperor concerto, featuring Radu Lupu.
In May 2017, Muti conducted the CSO in a complete cycle of Brahms’ four symphonies. The First and Second symphonies were offered on one program and the Third and Fourth symphonies the following weeks, giving audiences an opportunity to explore the work of this influential composer who paved the way for generations of symphonists to come. In total, approximately 15,400 patrons attended these concerts in Symphony Center.
As a finale to the 2016/17 season, Muti led the CSO and the Chicago Symphony Chorus in four performances of Italian opera masterworks celebrating the repertoire of Verdi, Boito, and Puccini. Italian opera arias, overtures, and choruses showcased the Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Chicago Children’s Choir, and internationally renowned soloist, bass Riccardo Zanellato. The program included Verdi’s overtures to Nabucco and I vespri siciliani; the famous chorus “Va, pensiero” and “Gli arredi festivi” from Nabucco; the Anvil Chorus from Il trovatore, and “Patria oppressa” from Macbeth; intermezzos from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana; and the first-ever CSO performance of Boito’s prologue to Mefistofele
The 2016/17 season featured outstanding guest conductors and world-renowned guest artists presenting some of the most engaging classical repertoire of the canon alongside new works representing the future of classical music. Four world premiere works and numerous works by living composers were showcased on the CSO Main series.
In March 2017, guest conductor, composer, and new music advocate Esa-Pekka Salonen led the CSO in two weeks of programming celebrating the ongoing tradition of symphonic music. Celebrating the 70th birthday of Grammy® and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams, Salonen led the CSO in performances of two of Adams’ contemporary masterworks: Scheherazade.2, featuring guest violinist Leila Josefowicz, and Slonimsky’s Earbox, a work based on Stravinsky’s use of modal harmony.
Salonen’s program also saw the return of CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma to Orchestra Hall for a special world premiere performance of a CSO co-commission composed by Salonen himself. On March 9, 2017, Salonen’s Cello Concerto received its world premiere by the CSO and Ma, for whom the piece was written. Salonen’s work, described by the composer as a soundscape evoking imagery of clouds, comets, and even chaos, was co-commissioned by the CSO, the New York Philharmonic, the Barbican Centre in London, and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The CSO received generous support from the Mrs. Harold C. Smith Fund for New Music for this commission.
In addition to Salonen’s Cello Concerto, three additional commissions received world premieres as part of the CSO Main series. In October 2016, James Gaffigan led the CSO in a performance of Australian composer Carl Vine’s new Five Hallucinations for Trombone and Orchestra, commissioned for the CSO by the Edward F. Schmidt Family Commissioning Fund and featuring CSO trombonist Michael Mulcahy as soloist. In March, CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Samuel Adams had a new commission, many words of love, given its world premiere by the CSO, conducted by Riccardo Muti. Adams’ piece integrated electric sounds with orchestral music, pushing digital music through percussion instruments to give them acoustic resonance. Finally, in June 2017, Susanna Mälkki led the CSO in the world premiere of the CSO commission Proceed, Moon by Pulitzer Prize-winner Melinda Wagner. Mälkki paired the Wagner premiere with eclectic and engaging works featuring jazz saxophone great Branford Marsalis, including an orchestral arrangement of Fauré’s Pavane and music from Steven Spielberg’s film Catch Me If You Can, composed by John Williams.
In their second year as the CSO’s Mead Composers-inResidence, Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek co-curated MusicNOW’s 19th season—four concerts presenting works from established and emerging composers. Five MusicNOW world premieres were offered in the 2016/17 season, spotlighting the work of Elizabeth Ogonek, Katherine Young, and Kyle Vegter, among others. MusicNOW also participated in the first-ever Ear Taxi Festival, a five-day celebration of Chicago’s thriving new music community.
In 2016/17, MusicNOW paid tribute to two diverse musical innovators. In collaboration and with the support of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of music, the second program of the year celebrated the 80th birthday of Steve Reich, one of America’s most influential and iconic living composers. It featured musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing Reich’s Different Trains, Proverb, and Double Sextet, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 2009. MusicNOW audience members were treated to installations of Reich’s work in the lower level lobby of the Harris Theater after the performance. In April, Illuminating Boulez was a retrospective celebration and contemplation of the composer and work that shaped and inspired the new music world.
The program also served as an opportunity to reflect on the life of Pauline Oliveros, whose MusicNOW commission, For Two or Three Instruments, was given its world premiere only months after her death. Major support for MusicNOW is
generously provided by the Irving Harris Foundation, the Sally Mead Hands Foundation, the Julian Family Foundation, Cindy Sargent, and the Zell Family Foundation.
In September 2016, the Resound label released a recording of Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre and Shostakovich’s Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The seventh CSO Resound recording with Riccardo Muti, it captured live performances in Orchestra Hall from March and June of 2012. Kol Nidre features Muti conducting the CSO and the Chicago Symphony Chorus, with tenor and leading interpreter of Jewish music Alberto Mizrahi as narrator. Internationally acclaimed Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov is the soloist in Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti.
On June 16, 2017, the CSO released a new CSO Resound recording of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing Bruckner’s formidable Ninth Symphony under the baton of Riccardo Muti. The CSO, holding the distinction of presenting the U.S. premiere of the piece in 1904 under the orchestra’s founder and first music director Theodore Thomas, has long been admired for its Bruckner interpretations. This is the eighth CSO recording under Muti released on Resound. Each week, over 250,000 listeners tune in to our syndicated terrestrial radio broadcasts, and each month over 40,000 individuals throughout the world visit Sounds & Stories to stream these broadcast programs.
SCP Jazz, internationally recognized as one of the most prominent series of the genre, filled Symphony Center for 10 outstanding concerts this season. New Orleans musical luminary Dr. John made his Symphony Center debut, honoring his own jazz hero, trumpeter Louis Armstrong, in his Spirit of Satch project featuring trumpeter Nicholas Payton. The annual residency of legendary trumpeter and bandleader Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) included two concerts in Symphony Center as well as a day of educational activities and a Jazz for Young People® performance at Carl Schurz High School on Chicago’s Northwest Side. An SCP Jazz concert showcased the ensemble, while an SCP special concert paired the group with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This special event, conducted by Edwin Outwater, included a selection from Marsalis’ own Swing Symphony and the premiere of a new version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition that included movements performed by the CSO in Ravel’s orchestrations alongside movements arranged by JLCO members for jazz ensemble.
The 2016/17 SCP Jazz series included programs that recognized the tremendous contributions of some of the jazz genre’s major figures. The Jazz 100 project’s March 2017 concert celebrated the legacy of Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Mongo Santamaria, and Thelonious Monk, all born in 1917. In April 2017, Oscar, With Love, curated by Oscar Peterson’s widow, Kelly Peterson, brought together an all-star roster of jazz pianists performing standards and Peterson’s own compositions. Featured artists included Kenny Barron, Bill Charlap, Benny Green, and Renee Rosnes, as well as Chicago’s own Ramsey Lewis.
The 2016/17 SCP Chamber Music series featured the astonishing talent of today’s leading string virtuosos. The brilliance of violinist Hilary Hahn was on full display in a November 2016 program of Bach, Mozart, and Schubert. Symphony Center favorite AnneSophie Mutter presented a March 2017 program of diverse repertoire from Currier to Saint-Saëns. The energy of Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica brought the audience to its feet in a February 1 program featuring works by Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky. Finally, Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma presented a collaboration with extraordinary string musicians Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer. The trio offered a program of Bach repertoire reimagined for cello, mandolin, and bass.
In 2016/17, ten recital programs featuring eleven different keyboard masters offered audiences diverse programs of repertoire by some of classical music’s greatest composers. After a dazzling Symphony Ball performance, Daniil Trifonov returned to Orchestra Hall in March 2017, in a program of Schumann, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. Russian pianist Igor Levit made his Chicago and Symphony Center debut this season, and Leif Ove Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin presented a joint recital for duo piano, including an arrangement of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring for two pianos. Throughout the 2016/17 season, the series welcomed back SCP favorites including Maurizio Pollini, Kirill Gerstein, Jeremy Denk, Murray Perahia, Paul Lewis, and Rudolf Buchbinder.
Presenting visiting orchestras from around the world is a long-standing tradition at Symphony Center. In 2016/17, Symphony Center Presents continued this tradition with a three-concert series. The season began in January 2017 with a visit by the Cleveland Orchestra presenting a program of Beethoven and Sibelius led by its music director Franz Welser-Möst. An all-Beethoven program offered by the Budapest Festival Orchestra led by Iván Fischer featured Richard Goode as piano soloist in February 2017. Finally, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic returned to Symphony Center in March 2017 for a concert of Brahms and Shostakovich, led by music director Yuri Temirkanov.
Each season, special concerts at Symphony Center showcase some of the greatest guest artists from diverse genres of music around the world. Artists and repertoire presented both complete and complement the classical genre, engaging audiences of varied backgrounds and musical interests.
As a capstone to the season, in June 2017, international pop sensation Pink Martini performed with the CSO for the 28th annual Corporate Night. This annual concert offers audiences an opportunity to celebrate the many ways corporations partner with and support the CSO. This special concert featured vocalists China Forbes, Storm Large, and Chicago’s own Ikram Goldman in a rare appearance together on stage.
In 2016/17, CSO at the Movies shared some of cinema’s mostloved films and film scores with audiences and families. In November 2016, the CSO performed John Williams’ Academy Award®-winning score to the heartwarming Spielberg hit, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. In April, 2017 the CSO and members of the
Chicago Symphony Chorus took audiences on a journey into the life and mind of Mozart with Amadeus. The season wrapped up with the haunting and heart-stopping thriller Psycho in May.
Symphony Center Presents hosted the national tour of A Prairie Home Companion in January 2017, starring the newly tapped host, mandolinist Chris Thile. Joined by musician Andrew Bird, folk singer Laura Marling, and comedian Beth Stelling, Thile led the program made famous on public radio by American icon Garrison Keillor, which included musical performances, narrative retrospectives, and a celebration of the Cubs’ recent World Series win.
As part of the 2016/17 season, Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra traveled to Europe for an 11-concert tour, January 13-27, 2017. The trip marked the CSO’s sixth European tour under Muti, and was the Orchestra’s 33rd tour to Europe and the 60th international tour in its history. The Orchestra performed in seven cities: Paris; Aalborg, Denmark; Hamburg, Baden-Baden, and Frankfurt, Germany; Vienna, Austria; and Milan, Italy where the CSO performed at the historic Teatro alla Scala. The tour placed a spotlight on the CSO’s international pre-eminence, as the Orchestra was the first foreign ensemble to perform in the newly opened Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany. The tour also served as a homecoming for Muti, who was music director of La Scala from 1986 to 2005.
On tour, sold-out concerts were accompanied by special master classes at universities and conservatories, as well as community engagement events. CSO musicians offered master classes and coaching to Aalborg Symphony members and regional music students. Musicians visited children at Paris’ Trousseau Hospital to perform for young patients and their families. Also in Paris, CSO musicians offered master classes and coaching to regional music students at the Paris Conservatory for Music and Dance. Special performances and workshops on CSO tours across the U.S. and around the world engage nontraditional audiences in
the power of classical music. Community engagement activities such as these have been a part of every CSO tour since 2012. cso.org/europeantour
On September 24, 2016, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra returned for its 34th performance at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on campus at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Muti led the Orchestra in a program of classical highlights: Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain, Strauss’ orchestral showpiece Don Juan, and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7.
Muti and the CSO returned to DuPage County during the 2016/17 season as part of the first three-concert series in Edman Memorial Chapel at Wheaton College. In October, guest conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada, who made his CSO debut this same season, led the CSO in a program of Kodály, Sibelius, and Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra. Muti conducted pianist and CSO favorite Mitsuko Uchida alongside the CSO in March 2017. The series concluded in April with a performance of Bartók and Beethoven led by guest conductor Neeme Järvi. cso.org/wheaton
Since Riccardo Muti’s appointment as the CSO’s 10th music director in 2010, the Orchestra’s legacy of excellence has been greatly enhanced as a thoughtful and inspiring musical stalwart committed to sharing music with the widest possible audience. Integral to Muti’s vision for the CSO is his dedication to redefining an orchestra’s place in its city and society through community engagement, exceptional training opportunities for the next generation of classical musicians, and the expansion of music’s reach beyond the concert hall to positively impact individuals and communities.
This season, the CSO made a special commitment to build relationships with audiences and communities on Chicago’s South Side, making live classical music a part of everyday life. The October 13, 2016 Concert for Chicago at the Apostolic Church of God served as an overture to a series of free concerts and events presented by the CSOA on the South Side in 2016/17. Throughout the season, CSO All-Access Chamber concert performances alternated between Symphony Center and community venues in South Side neighborhoods. CSO chamber ensembles offered formal All-Access series concerts at the South Shore Culture Center, Kenwood Academy, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.
The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the pre-professional training orchestra of the CSO, presented its 10th annual concert at the South Shore Cultural Center, as well as numerous chamber concerts in South Side community venues. For the third year, the Civic Bach Marathon presented Brandenburg Concertos across the city, including in the South and West Side neighborhoods.
Performances were offered at Hibbard Elementary School and Lara Academy in the Albany Park and Back of the Yards neighborhoods, at the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, and in diverse community venues, including Albany Park Multicultural Academy, the South Shore Fine Arts School, The People’s Music School’s Uptown Academy, and the Apostolic Church of God in Woodlawn. The marathon culminated in a formal concert at Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago.
Special initiatives also offered audiences integrative classical music programming during the 2016/17 season. The 2016/17 Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music series at the Art Institute of Chicago offered five Sunday afternoon performances in Fullerton Hall at the museum, featuring chamber music by 11 composers spanning three centuries.
During the 2016/17 season, the CSO offered 200 concerts, music education programs, and music events for audiences free of charge. Events took place at Symphony Center and across diverse Chicago neighborhoods, in schools, public venues, Park District sites, and art galleries. These events, part of the work of the Negaunee Music Institute, support the vision of the CSO’s artistic leadership, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma. Through the work of the Institute, each year more than 200,000 people across Chicago and around the world gain access to the resources of the CSO through music education opportunities, performance opportunities, and world-class performances by leading professional and pre-professional musicians.
Across Chicago and around the world, the Negaunee Music Institute connects individuals and communities to the extraordinary musical resources of the CSO. Under the visionary leadership of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, the Institute creates opportunities for people of all ages with diverse backgrounds to participate actively in the life of the Orchestra.
Serving the city and the world through music, Institute programs include a suite of 40 CSO School and Family Concerts; seven open rehearsals; over 60 in-depth school and community partnerships; the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, a prestigious training orchestra and fellowship for emerging professional musicians; intensive training and performance opportunities for young musicians including the Percussion Scholarship Program, the Youth in Music Festival and Crain-Mailing Young Artists Competition; and education and community engagement activities during CSO domestic and international tours.
During the 2016/17 season, The Negaunee Music Institute:
Reached 45,000 students, teachers, and families with children through CSO School and Family Concerts and Education and Community Open Rehearsals
Partnered intensively with 50 schools and community organizations
Engaged more than 170 Chicago Public Schools
Presented 12 free Civic Orchestra concerts and over 50 free chamber music concerts by musicians of the CSO and Civic Inspired more than 1,000 young musicians through mentorship by CSO and Civic musicians
Above: Riccardo Muti speaks to residents at the Illinois Youth Center-Chicago during an interactive recital with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato on Sunday, September 25, 2016. His seventh recital of this kind at a Chicago area juvenile prison or detention center since becoming CSO Music Director in 2010, Muti engaged the audience in dialogue about the arias they were hearing. To close the recital, CSO Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny, Principal Percussion Cynthia Yeh, and Piccolo/Flute Jennifer Gunn performed solos and chamber music. In the months that followed, the Institute produced a series of musical projects for underserved young people, including a week-long residency at IYC-Chicago in collaboration with The Irene Taylor Trust: Music in Prisons during which 14 young people, alongside CSO musicians Assistant Concertmaster Yuan-Qing Yu and Principal Bass Alex Hanna and the Civic Fellows, created, performed, and recorded original music. In the spring, in partnership with SGA Youth and Family Services, ten teen parents worked with teaching artists and members of the CSO to compose and record original lullabies for their children. Throughout the season, members of the Civic Orchestra joined performances presented by Storycatchers Theatre during which young people, some incarcerated, others recently released from the care of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, performed original musical theater based on stories from their lives.
Left: CSO Bass Dan Armstrong demonstrates his instrument for a student at Sawyer Elementary School on December 12, 2016 His visit was part of an interactive CSO chamber music concert at the school, one of over 30 given by musicians of the Orchestra in schools and neighborhood venues each year. The Institute’s 50 school and community partners each host CSO and/or Civic musicians for chamber concerts, bring participants to Symphony Center for concerts or open rehearsals, and alongside CSOA staff, plan supplemental activity that responds to their unique needs (e.g., development of curriculum materials, master classes, creative songwriting projects, and more). Throughout the season, five “Connect” CPS partner schools engaged in a series of teacher workshops, hosted a presentation by the Civic Fellows, attended CSO school concerts, and then collaborated with the Fellows to create new works of art that were showcased during a culminating event in May. The CSOA continued to use its voice to advocate for the importance of music as an essential component of a well-rounded education, including a series of CSO musician videos launched as part of Music in Our Schools Month®, which received more than 330,000 views online.
Above: CSO Assistant Concertmaster Yuan-Qing Yu and Assistant Principal Cello Ken Olsen perform for a patient at Hôpital Armand Trousseau in Paris, France, during the CSO’s winter 2017 tour to Europe. Their visit was one of several education and engagement activities that took place throughout the tour, including master classes at Paris’ Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse, sectional coachings of and master classes with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra in Aalborg, Denmark, an open rehearsal at the Musikverein and a chamber ensemble visit to Akademisches Gymnasium Wien in Vienna, Austria.
a musical marathon
Above: Musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago pose in a classroom at Lara Academy in the Back of the Yards neighborhood during Bach Marathon on Wednesday, November 30 Over the course of 10 hours and in partnership with The People’s Music School, Civic ensembles performed J.S. Bach’s six Brandenburg Concertos at Christkindlmarket and Fourth Presbyterian Church, as well as in school and community sites across the city. As preparation for the marathon, the musicians received coaching by Yo-Yo Ma and Nicholas Kraemer. The marathon, which has become an annual tradition for the orchestra, is one of many “artistic challenges” issued by Ma to the Civic Orchestra each season with the goal of engaging diverse communities in creative ways through music. In spring 2017, Civic was in residence at Kenwood Academy on the South Side for a week of coaching, chamber music, side-by-side rehearsals and performances with band and orchestra students at the school.
mentored by the masters
Above: CSO Assistant Principal Viola Li-Kuo Chang works with a young musician during the CSOA’s Chicago Youth in Music Festival strings symposium in Grainger Ballroom on Saturday, March 6. The symposium, which was conducted by Edwin Outwater and also featured an appearance by Yo-Yo Ma, brought together young musicians from six partner organizations for coaching with CSO musicians and an open rehearsal. Over the course of six weeks, the festival included this symposium, an open rehearsal of the Festival Orchestra with Riccardo Muti, residencies at community youth orchestra programs by the Civic Fellows and the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. The 2017 Competition finals featured string players who were accompanied by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago conducted by the CSO’s Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima. Sixteen-year-old Maya Anjali Buchannan, violin, was named the winner of the competition and will solo with the CSO during its school concerts on March 14 and 15, 2018.
Above: Yo-Yo Ma performs with musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago during a Concert for Peace at St. Sabina Church on the South Side on Sunday, June 10. The concert, which also included members of the CSO, musicians from the St. Sabina Church band and Chicago Children’s Choir, brought together audience members representing over 150 zip codes from across the city and suburbs for an afternoon of music and community in support of a more peaceful Chicago. In collaboration with the church, funds were also raised for St. Sabina’s “Strong Futures” program, which provides young men ages 17-24, who are out of school and unemployed, with training and mentorship that leads to sustainable employment. The Concert for Peace also served as the launch of a new initiative that is led by Muti and Ma and includes additional peace concerts, as well as expanded songwriting projects to provide platforms for creative expression and storytelling. Additionally, in partnership with The People’s Music School, CSO musicians and Civic Fellows and select will mentor young musicians who are members of community youth orchestras on Chicago’s South and Northwest Sides.

Members of the Civic Orchestra receive an annual stipend to help offset some of their living expenses during their training in Civic. The following donors have generously underwritten Civic musicians for the 2016–17 season.
Fourteen Civic members participate in the Civic Fellowship program, a rigorous artistic and professional development curriculum that supplements their membership in the full orchestra. Major funding for this program was generously provided by The Julian Family Foundation with additional funding from Prince Charitable Trusts.
The 2016–17 Civic season was sponsored by the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation.
