a note from the chair and the president We are delighted that so many of you are celebrating the 2020 holidays with us virtually during this unprecedented year. With our new online concert platform, CSOtv, and other offerings, like this e-magazine, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association continues to work tirelessly to keep music part of our lives. During the month of December, you can take advantage of an array of concerts on CSOtv. Our core offering is CSO Sessions, which Musical America aptly referred to as a “love letter to both the CSO’s stellar players and to Orchestra Hall.” This premium series offers five performances featuring musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a range of repertoire, from a dramatic telling of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale to festive fanfares for winds and brass filmed on stage at Orchestra Hall in Symphony Center. In addition, two outstanding Symphony Center Presents On Demand concerts are available: one with pianist Jorge Federico Osorio and the other by the a cappella ensemble Chanticleer in a holiday-themed program filmed in San Francisco (page 12). We would be remiss if we let the month of December pass without acknowledging the 250th birthday anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven on December 17. We recommend two exceptional free online features to help mark the occasion: Sir Georg Solti, the CSO’s eighth music director, conducting Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in a performance from 1989 and Riccardo Muti, the CSO’s tenth music director, conducting Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in a 2014 performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. This online magazine also contains an article with information on how you can tune into the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert conducted by Maestro Muti live from Vienna (page 6). As we come to the end of 2020, we take this opportunity to thank you for your dedicated support of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. The past year has been one of the most unusual periods in the history of our organization. One constant is how grateful we are for our loyal supporters. Your generosity and commitment has allowed us to adapt in ways we never could have imagined. On behalf of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Negaunee Music Institute, our trustees, volunteers, administration, and above all, the many people whose lives are enriched each year through music, we thank you for your support. We send our warmest wishes for a music-filled, happy, and healthy holiday season and look forward to the possibilities of 2021.

Riccardo Muti Rings in the New Year from Vienna
O
n January 1, 2021, Riccardo Muti, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s famous tenth music director, will usher in perhaps the most anticipated New Year in many of our lifetimes. He will do so conducting his sixth New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein. While there will be no audience in the hall due to health considerations in response to COVID-19, the 2021 New Year’s Concert will be broadcast in over ninety countries and followed by millions of radio and television viewers around the globe, making it the largest worldwide event in classical music. The Vienna Philharmonic’s annual event, a longstanding tradition that dates to the late 1930s, ushers in each New Year with joy and optimism. In 2021, the concert will take on an even deeper meaning. The CSO’s Zell Music Director
recognizes the special significance of his upcoming performance, which will be “a welcome symbol of hope after such a tragic year,” as he said in an interview with Pablo L. Rodríguez of Spain’s El País. Muti is known for masterful interpretations of Vienna’s signature waltzes, marches, and polkas by Lehar, Suppé, and members of the Strauss family, and his concerts are typically performed for sold-out crowds, certainly the case for Muti’s planned December and January concerts before the Austrian government decided that, due to the recent rise in coronavirus infections, no enclosed public events should take place until after January 6. Muti, however, was able to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein in June for a limited audience and again for the Salzburg Festival’s 100th anniversary season in August. At the June performances, Muti gave Austrian audiences a preview of his upcoming New Crossing Borders Through Streams Year’s Concerts conducting In addition to the New Year’s Concert broadcast, Riccardo Muti has Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Voices of made several performances available for streaming. As Muti noted in an interview with Corriere della Sera, “It is not by chance that I will conduct the New Year’s Concert for the sixth time.” In a 2018 interview with critic Dennis Polkow for WDCB-FM, Muti discussed the importance of the New Year’s Concert. “When you do the Viennese waltz, you must feel that it is a combination of life and death,” he said. “We must not forget that this music has a nostalgia, a melancholy, that comes from the period, that we Riccardo Muti conducts the 2018 New Year’s Concert with the Vienna are near the end of an empire. CHANTICLEER on demand
presents the gift of virtual concert
By Kyle MacMillan

f this were a normal year, Chanticleer would present its annual Chicago holiday concerts at the Fourth Presbyterian Church under the auspices of Symphony Center Presents. But as everyone knows, 2020 has been anything but normal. Because of the pandemic, the San Franciscobased a cappella male choir had to cancel its usual national tour. But all is not lost. Chicago audiences are able to enjoy the voices of the acclaimed ensemble through a virtual concert online. Symphony Center Presents On Demand streams a filmed version of the group’s 2020 yuletide program, A Chanticleer Christmas: From Darkness to Light, via the CSOtv video portal. The concert is available December 6–27. Tim Keeler became the sixth music director of the San Francisco-based vocal ensemble Chanticleer, beginning in August. The virtual

Singing is brilliant, and I love doing it, but there is that extra bit of perspective you get as a conductor. . . . You get to think about a lot of other things, and I find that fascinating and exciting, so that’s always been the trajectory for me. After Chanticleer music director William Fred Scott announced he was retiring, Keeler got a phone call inquiring about his interest in the job. He jumped at the chance. “For any choral musician in America, you say, ‘Yeah, absolutely,’ because Chanticleer’s the top of the game,” he said. PHOTO BY R J M U N A

n October 24, 2020, the Women’s Board of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association presented Sounds of Celebration: An Evening at Home with the CSO, a virtual fundraising event held in place of the annual Symphony Ball gala. The evening’s main attraction—a free, hourlong online broadcast— featured performances by CSO musicians and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, as well as special appearances by Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and a star-studded lineup of guests. The generous support of the CSOA’s donors and patrons ensured that this festive celebration was also a fundraising success. With leadership from Women’s Board Co-chairs Ruthie Ryan and Cynthia Scholl, Trustee Co-chair Robert Kohl, and Women’s Board President Shelley Ochab, along with Northern Trust as presenting sponsor, Sounds of Celebration raised over $917,000 for the organization. While the broadcast was free and open to the public, donors who purchased a sponsorship package enjoyed a range of benefits, including virtual lounges, party boxes, and CSO keepsakes. In addition, patrons who viewed the broadcast were invited to make a donation of any size online or via text message. Following the event, Women’s Board President Shelley Ochab said: I am so happy that Sounds of Celebration was a success and am overjoyed that we exceeded our fundraising goal! There are so
many people who deserve credit and thanks for this achievement—Women’s Board Co-chairs Ruthie Ryan and Cynthia Scholl, Trustee Co-chair Robert Kohl, our musicians, special guests, the CSOA staff, and all of our generous sponsors and patrons. With patience, perseverance, and passion for our Orchestra, everyone worked together to accomplish something that had never been done before. I am honored to have been a part of this team. Musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus served as hosts throughout the broadcast, which began with a warm welcome from Associate Concertmaster Stephanie Jeong. Standing on Armour Stage in Orchestra Hall, Jeong set the tone for the evening with the following words: In both times of peace and trouble, [music] is there to help us discover beauty, even in struggle. During every performance, our goal is to transform and uplift you, our city, and our world. I know that we can share peace in this moment together even while you’re watching and listening at home. The first of three musical selections filmed in Orchestra Hall featured members of the CSO brass section in the lively march from Verne Reynolds’s Suite for Brass Quintet. Finally, Concertmaster Robert Chen and Principal Cello John Sharp performed the finale of Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello with “considerable technical élan and sensitivity to the composer’s modernist idiom” (Chicago Tribune). The evening’s musical offerings also included several prerecorded performances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, including works by Antonín Dvořák and Henry T. Burleigh’s arrangement of the traditional spiritual “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.” In remarks between pieces, Ma shared his appreciation for the Negaunee Music Institute, the CSOA’s education and community engagement department, with which he worked extensively during his decade-long tenure as Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant. Ma’s partnership with the Negaunee Music Institute led to one of the works that he performed during the Sounds of Celebration broadcast: a lush arrangement of Dvořák’s “Songs My Mother Taught Me” from Gypsy Songs, op. 55, with Civic Orchestra of Chicago alumna and cellist Dara Hankins playing multiple lines of accompaniment to Ma’s solo part. Hankins and Ma first met at the Civic Centennial Celebration concert on March 1, 2020, and he welcomed her collaboration on future projects. When she later sent him a video of her Dvořák arrangement,

Ma’s reaction was, “This is why I love the Civic Orchestra, the Negaunee [Music] Institute, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.” While the performances by members of the CSO and Yo-Yo Ma were powerful reminders of the beauty of live music, equally meaningful were the sentiments shared by Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus musicians, guest artists, and friends of the Orchestra. Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti sent greetings from his home in Ravenna, Italy. “My family, music family, is the Chicago Symphony,” he said. “So practically I am a sort of father without the family around. And so I miss them enormously and cannot think about the emotion that we all will have when one day we get together again, and [the] first sound of a great orchestra like the Chicago Symphony will reverberate in the hall.” Messages of encouragement and support also came from bass-baritone Eric Owens, CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Missy Mazzoli, trumpeter-composer Wynton Marsalis,
pianists Herbie Hancock and Mitsuko Uchida, violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Hilary Hahn, mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, and actor (and bassoon enthusiast) Rainn Wilson. “When I hear the CSO, I feel grateful for the musicians who play in it and for the community and patrons who support the Orchestra’s work,” Hahn said. “Every note is a symbol of thousands of people who believe in their orchestra, and the momentum, commitment, and care that’s required to put on an entire concert is a testament to the vitality of the CSO.” Reflecting on the event, Women’s Board Co-chair Cynthia Scholl said, “The Women’s Board of the CSOA was able to embrace a worldwide audience in a virtual environment with the same enthusiasm as we have for our annual Symphony Ball. I am so proud to be part of an organization that brought together generous donors, patrons, musicians, and staff and made it possible for Sounds of Celebration to be enjoyed for free all over the world.” “I was so happy to see the various volunteer groups and departments of the CSOA come together to create a totally new and successful fundraising event,” added Women’s Board Co-chair Ruthie Ryan. “This was uncharted territory, but through months of working together, a wonderfully creative program was produced and enjoyed worldwide. This was truly a monumental group effort by the whole CSO family that I was so proud to be a part of.” Sounds of Celebration: An Evening at Home with the CSO is available for free streaming at c s o.o rg / t v . Discover the benefits of making a legacy gift to your Chicago Symphony Orchestra. “We wish to leave our gift to the CSO so that the gift of music can continue for all people of all ages. We love the school programs that it provides. Since we have a choice for our gift giving, it definitely will be in the area of music. We feel there is nothing that can match the historical perspective and emotional and spiritual wellbeing that music can provide.” — Suzette and James Mahneke

About the designs We set out to design masks uniquely Chicago in nature. The first mask is a take on the iconic Chicago flag, replacing the third star with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra logo. The second design, #SafeAndSound, is inspired by masks worn by City of Chicago officials during press conferences and public appearances early in the pandemic. The city’s original #StayHome mask went viral after photos of the mask appeared on local news outlets. The design has since been adapted to feature many different messages. CSO face masks are intended for general, day-to-day use. These masks are not replacements for medical-grade protective equipment, nor should they be considered an alternative for other recommended measures to stop the community spread of COVID-19.
