About the designs We set out to design masks uniquely Chicago in nature. The first mask is a take on the iconic Chicago flag, replacing the third star with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra logo. The second design, #SafeAndSound, is inspired by masks worn by City of Chicago officials during press conferences and public appearances early in the pandemic. The city’s original #StayHome mask went viral after photos of the mask appeared on local news outlets. The design has since been adapted to feature many different messages. CSO face masks are intended for general, day-to-day use. These masks are not replacements for medical-grade protective equipment, nor should they be considered an alternative for other recommended measures to stop the community spread of COVID-19.

a note from the chair and the president

DEAR FRIENDS, During this extraordinary time, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA) remains committed to connecting audiences to the transformative power of music. In lieu of the printed program book you would receive at our Orchestra Hall performances, this e-magazine was designed to be enjoyed in the safety of your home, and to offer a glimpse into the current activities of the CSOA. In addition, we are able to recognize our steadfast and growing list of supporters. The generosity of the extended CSOA family is truly inspiring. In September, the CSOA announced details of an allnew digital fall 2020 season that provide audiences a way to connect with the CSO online. This new platform, called CSOtv—developed in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has interrupted live performances—offers a variety of opportunities to experience new and archival performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. We are pleased to inform you, in this issue and on cso.org, about our next set of CSOtv programs scheduled for the month of November, with plans to release additional episodes through the end of the year. A featured component of CSOtv is CSO Sessions, a new digital series of premium, on-demand, high-definition video recordings of concerts featuring CSO musicians in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Handsomely filmed and expertly recorded, these programs, which were developed with the artistic guidance of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, provide a close-up view of the superb musicianship of the members of our Orchestra. We are moved by the unwavering generosity of the CSOA family since March 2020 and despite recent cancellation announcements affecting concerts through March 2021 necessitated by the ongoing pandemic. We are also grateful for the dedication of our music director, board of trustees, musicians, administrative staff, and generous patrons and donors. Their support of the life-enriching programs and activities of the CSOA is essential, allowing us to continue sharing music with audiences in our community and around the world. Thank you for being part of this treasured group.

a note from riccardo muti zell music director

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is my musical family. Without it, I feel that part of me is missing. But during these unprecedented times, we must remain positive and take comfort in the power of music, which allows us to communicate across borders and to express the depths of our humanity. The musicians of the Orchestra are beginning to come together once again to share both a sense of fellowship and the love that we put into our music making. This speaks to the Greek origin of the word symphony (symphonos, essentially to bring or to play together). This fall, we have prepared programs for streaming that highlight the talents of this “ T HE CHICAGO wonderful orchestra. Representing a variety SYMPHONY of chamber ensembles and styles, this music ORCHESTRA IS MY appeals to the tastes of a broad community of MUSICAL FAMILY.” listeners. In these videos, most importantly, the public is able to witness the great technical abilities and artistry of some of the best musicians in the world. Chicago and the United States should be very proud to have such an orchestra.

oy. Gratitude. Relief. Those were some of the emotions coursing through Orchestra Hall in mid-September, as a small group of Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians, technicians, and stagehands returned for the first time in six months. beginning October 1 on the new CSOtv video portal. The first program, which features seven musicians and lasts about forty-five minutes, marks the beginning of the Orchestra’s modified 2020–21 season—its 130th season. “It was the best thing ever,” said Cristina Rocca, vice president of artistic administration. “It was wonderful to see the musicians back onstage and to see them looking well and smiling and just being happy to make music together again—not just one or two at home or in the garden in the A L L PHOTOS BY TODD ROS EN BERG

summer. And to see everyone else, the stage managers—it was a very special moment.” Because of the mid-March imposition of restrictions in a bid to squelch the deadly coronavirus, the CSO, like scores of other arts organizations across the Chicago area, had to cancel the rest of its season. Subsequently, it became clear that it was also not going to be able to undertake at least the first half of its original 2020–21 lineup of concerts announced in January. So what could be done? Since audiences couldn’t come to Orchestra Hall, the Chicago Symphony decided to take its concerts to them.

CSO Sessions, an innovative series of high-resolution concert videos that are set to be taped on the Armour Stage in Orchestra Hall and added weekly to the CSOtv portal through the end of 2020. Programs have been announced so far for each Thursday in October through October 29. “It’s all brand new for everybody,” Rocca said. “It’s all in-house, and it’s a huge effort for everybody—for the musicians, for the people backstage. We are lucky that we can do it, that we have our own home. We feel blessed, because not every orchestra has this possibility.” From November onward, some programs will incorporate works for small chamber orchestra, but the first five concerts in October all feature chamber ensembles ranging in size from duos to octets. The repertoire was chosen by the Chicago Symphony’s artistic staff with input from Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and the musicians. “It’s a little bit of taking things from everyone’s suggestions,” Rocca said, “and Muti. I’ve been talking to him regularly and taking on board his ideas, of course.” Maestro Muti recommended, for example, the inclusion of Rossini’s Sonata no. 6 in D major for two violins, cello, and bass, which is featured on the October 29 program. The October lineup ranges from such chamber staples as Nielsen’s Wind Quintet and Brahms’s String Quintet no. 2 in G major, op. 111, to lesser-known works like Ingolf Dahl’s Music for Brass Instruments (1944). Also included is one contemporary work, Boris Kerner, by Caroline Shaw, who won the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2013.

with the string players wearing masks. Such necessary spacing might seem like an impediment when it comes to blending and generating a sense of ensemble, but it should be remembered that instruments on opposite sides of the stage are often in dialogue with each other in orchestral concerts. So, collaborating from afar is nothing new to these musicians, and they are drawing on that experience in this setting. “For me and, I think, for all my colleagues,” Principal Bassoon Keith Buncke said, “it’s been really exciting. It was great to be back in the hall, playing in a nice, big, rich acoustic, and, also, it’s nice to remember the challenge of performing and the focus it demands.” Flute and piccolo Jennifer Gunn agreed, expressing delight at the chance to finally reconnect with at least one of her fellow musicians in duos by Pierre Gabaye and Heitor

And it’s what we hope will keep our audiences engaged.” Beyond his October 1 and 8 appearances, Buncke is scheduled to take part in some future CSO Sessions as well, and he is looking forward to them. “It’s great to have something to work toward,” he said. “It’s not a live performance, but it certainly feels like it, and it’s nice to have a really good reason to practice.”

Alfresco Concerts in the Community CSO musicians reunite to perform outdoors for eager audiences. By Emily McClanathan

O

n a sunny, breezy August afternoon in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, approximately fifty residents of the Breakers retirement community gathered in their courtyard for a long-awaited moment, a live performance by musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. An hour-long concert of chamber and solo works gave residents their first taste of live music, and their largest social activity with friends and neighbors, since COVID-19 restrictions were implemented in March. For the CSO musicians, it offered a welcome return to performing with colleagues in front of a live audience after a five-month hiatus.

The performance was one of three outdoor, socially distanced chamber music concerts presented by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute in communities across Chicago this August. Residents of Montgomery Place enjoyed a concert at their retirement community in Hyde Park, and health-care workers from several hospitals and health centers attended a performance in Douglas Park.* During a typical season, the Negaunee Music Institute organizes a robust schedule of free community events, including open rehearsals, chamber concerts in schools and neighborhood venues, and an annual Concert for Chicago featuring the

CSO and Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti. The ongoing generosity of donors has enabled many NMI programs to continue online since March, as well as supported special programs such as the concerts in Douglas Park, Edgewater, and Hyde Park. Created in response to the pandemic, the three performances provided moments of much-needed human connection amid the isolation and stress of these difficult times. Leading up to the concert at the Breakers, the excitement was palpable. Many residents have long-standing connections to the CSO; in a

normal season, they would be attending subscription concerts, open rehearsals, or community performances. Several mentioned that they had been listening to classical music on WFMT radio or watching CSO From Home videos online, but deeply missed the experience of live music. After the performance of works by Bach, Mozart, and Stravinsky, among others, smiles and applause abounded. One resident summed up her reaction in three words: “Happy, happy, happy!” Concierge and Activities Coordinator Creshanna Henry shared similar sentiments after the performance at Montgomery Place. “A great number of our residents are patrons of the CSO and frequently visited prior to the pandemic,” she said. “We thank the CSO for such a wonderful program. What an incredible experience for all that were starved for music—the feedback from our residents was amazing!” In their remarks to the audience at the Breakers, musicians made it clear that the performance was equally meaningful to them. CSO oboe-english horn Scott Hostetler said, “This is the first time we’ve been able to play together since March, so it’s really a treat for us.” Assistant Principal Oboe Michael Henoch added, “We’re so happy to be here to play for you. It’s been a long time since we’ve played for a live audience, and we really miss it, so this is as good for us as it is for you.”

so many lives lost, here in the U.S. and around the world.” CSO flute Emma Gerstein added: The Douglas Park concert was only the second concert I’ve played since the pandemic hit in March, and one of only a handful of times I’ve been able to play music with other people, in person. It was incredibly special to get to play with my friends and colleagues again, and on such a beautiful day. We musicians are always saying that music is a universal language, and it really felt that way as we were playing for the workers at various health centers in the city. There was a woman who came up to us in tears after the performance, saying how much it meant to her. These are the types of connections that I miss terribly during this time of isolation, and I hope we

can have more opportunities to share our music with our community this fall. As the CSO begins its 130th season, the Negaunee Music Institute is planning innovative ways to continue its educational and community engagement efforts, which are made possible through the support of loyal donors. Although it’s uncertain when it will be possible to return to a pre-pandemic schedule of live performances, the recent concerts for retirees and health-care workers were hopeful reminders of the power of music—especially when shared communally—to encourage and inspire.

“ I can’t imagine the world without music.” I was raised with music. My father, Isadore Zverow, was in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 43 years. I started attending school concerts at about age 8 but was taken to concerts by my mother from about age 5 on. The CSO was my family. I have taken my children to the CSO children’s concerts, and now I take our grandson to the same concerts. I can’t imagine the world without music. During the COVID-19 shutdown, my Chicago Symphony Orchestra concerts and other live performances have been some of the things I missed most, right next to my friends and family. I have included the CSO in my estate plans because I feel very strongly that it is important not only to make music available to the next generation but also to give back to the world what I received. — Leoni Zverow McVey TERRY'S PHOTO
