annual report 2019/20
message from the chair Dear CSOA Friends and Family, If there is a silver lining to confronting the challenges of a global pandemic, it is that we have had the opportunity to reflect on what is most important in our lives. I know that for you one of those core values is music, specifically music performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). These unprecedented times have proven that music truly is a balm for the spirit and that the programs of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association (CSOA) are essential. This report looks back at the extraordinary 2019/20 season, which began on September 19, 2019, and ended June 30, 2020. It shows a season that ranged from many months of the treasured concert experiences we have come to expect when we enter Symphony Center to a new reality that has us engaging with the CSOA virtually. When concerts halted on March 12 in compliance with health regulations and safety precautions, the organization quickly pivoted to respond to the needs of its loyal fans and continues in the model established last spring to reach audiences as never before. In early June, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to ratify new language in our organization’s Statement of Trustee Commitments and Responsibilities and Corporate Governance Guidelines, which formally establishes a process to track the evolution of the CSOA’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in programming and practices for audiences, artists, employees and Trustees. Beginning in the 2020/21 season, the Trustees now require CSOA management to report annually on the established priorities, progress made and future goals in the aforementioned areas. As many of you know, our commitment to the Black community, other communities of color and other underrepresented groups did not begin in 2020, but this pledge to take meaningful and measurable actions to support the growth and diversification of our organization, as well as to continue and expand our current programs, was a critical step in formalizing our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
I sense that, like me, you will look back on the events and activities documented in this report and be astonished by all that was achieved despite everything. To be reminded of the amazing concerts we enjoyed last season reinvigorates the desire to support and preserve this valued institution. At the same time, one cannot help being moved and grateful for the innovative and deeply touching ways Maestro Muti and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Civic Orchestra of Chicago have continued to bring us music. I would like to thank all those who support the Association, beginning with Maestro Muti and the world-class musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who enrich us with each performance, whether it be on the Armour Stage, on tour, a favorite recording or video filmed in their living room. I would also like to thank the Trustees, who recognize and honor the exceptional value the CSOA offers and who remain steadfast in their support. Their commitment is echoed by all the CSOA’s affiliate groups, including Governing Members, Women’s Board, League, Overture Council, Negaunee Music Institute Board, Theodore Thomas Society, National and International Friends, Western Suburbs Ambassadors, African American Network and Latino Alliance — all models through their leadership and gifts. The generosity of donors, foundations, corporations, sponsors and patrons is also essential to the life of the CSOA, as are the efforts of our numerous committed volunteers. I also want to express my admiration and appreciation of our devoted staff, led by President Jeff Alexander. For nearly 130 years, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been sustained by dedicated supporters with a passion for music and a belief in its power to inspire and transform lives. I am deeply grateful for symbols of your commitment throughout the 2019/20 season and look forward to the day when we can come together again at Symphony Center.

message from the president Dear Friends, As this report illustrates, the 129th season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association is one we can look back upon with great pride for the incredible artistic achievements that preceded the cancellation of concerts on March 12, 2020, as well as the resourcefulness, generosity and creativity that followed. During this extraordinary season, the CSOA remained steadfastly committed to connecting audiences with the transformative power of music. Under the artistic leadership of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra presented concerts that celebrated the legacy of Ludwig van Beethoven, championed the voices of contemporary composers and featured the virtuosic talents of distinguished guests and Orchestra members alike, among other unique artistic triumphs. With the support of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association — the parent organization of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, Negaunee Music Institute, Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Symphony Center complex — over 300 live concerts and events were presented, followed by an array of virtual performances that enriched the lives of millions of people throughout Chicago and around the world.
The CSOA took great pleasure in celebrating the 10th season of the CSO’s 10th music director in concerts that highlighted recurring themes of his tenure with the Orchestra. Muti has offered thoughtful retrospectives on the work of many composers before, and in 2019/20 he initiated an exploration of the individuality and lasting power of the music of Beethoven in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Throughout the season, the Orchestra also introduced music by powerful contemporary compositional voices, with Muti conducting the world premiere of CSO commissions, including Bernard Rands’ DREAM for Orchestra and Nicolas Bacri’s Ophelia’s Tears, which marked the 13th world premiere he has conducted with the CSO. The exceptional bond between Muti and the Orchestra was reflected in the number of concerto performances featuring its members, including Principal Percussion Cynthia Yeh (U.S. premiere of Avner Dorman’s Eternal Rhythm), Associate Concertmaster Stephanie Jeong and Assistant Principal Cello Kenneth Olsen (Brahms’ Double Concerto) and bass clarinet and clarinet J. Lawrie Bloom (the aforementioned Bacri’s Ophelia’s Tears). We are incredibly grateful that the world was not denied the pleasure of hearing Muti conduct another exceptional opera in concert — of course I refer to three spectacular performances of Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana featuring the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and a star-studded cast of international soloists. In addition to remarkable concerts at Symphony Center, the Orchestra expanded its reputation nationally and internationally on three tours. For their first tour of the 2019/20 season, Riccardo Muti and the CSO traveled to New York for two concerts in Carnegie Hall. The first concert on November 15 was broadcast and streamed live by New York’s WQXR-FM; the second night featured a formidable all-Prokofiev program. In January, the Orchestra left on a 10-concert tour that took it to eight cities in six countries, marking the CSO’s 34th tour to Europe and eighth European tour with Riccardo Muti. The CSO’s 2020 Florida tour in February included a debut appearance for Muti and the Orchestra together at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, as well as returns to Miami’s Adrienne Arsht —continued on page 6

message from the president continued Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and two performances at Hayes Hall in Naples presented by Artis—Naples. Between concerts on all three tours, members of the Orchestra performed in schools, community centers and hospitals with the support of the Negaunee Music Institute. We are honored that the Orchestra was again able to serve as a cultural ambassador for the city of Chicago in this way. We were also pleased to continue our series of concerts at the beautiful Edman Memorial Chapel at Wheaton College. The Symphony Center Presents (SCP) series attracted enthusiastic audiences with its range of concerts performed by exceptional soloists and ensembles. The SCP Piano and Chamber Music series were essential parts of our Beethoven 250 celebration and offered an intimate counterbalance to the symphonic repertoire featured on the CSO’s main subscription series. SCP also featured the debuts of the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic on the Orchestra series and the return of both Chick Corea and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on the Jazz series, and a special concert by Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer. SCP also hosted favorite longtime guest artists on their final tours, including the Chieftains, who have been performing in Orchestra Hall since the mid-1980s, and conductor Kent Nagano on his final tour as music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. From September and into March, the SCP series greatly enhanced the musical opportunities for Chicago audiences with the excellence and diversity of its programming. The importance of recordings and broadcasts took on new meaning during the 2019/20 season. Of particular note was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar), conducted by Riccardo Muti and featuring bass Alexey Tikhomirov, which was released on the house label, CSO Resound®, to rave reviews in December. In the spring, as concerts were canceled, the CSOA began developing exceptional online programs that featured new performances by CSO musicians with artistic guidance from Maestro Muti, including a Virtual Day of Music celebration on June 21. This was in addition to expanding its offerings on the robust CSO Radio broadcast series. 6
The Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra helped us reach even further into the community with numerous concerts and programs in schools, community centers and correctional institutions. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago welcomed its new Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur. In addition to conducting two Civic concerts at Symphony Center and one at the South Shore Cultural Center, as well as the Civic Centennial Celebration Benefit Concert with special guest Yo-Yo Ma on March 1, Masur found himself conducting an online performance to commemorate 100 years of Civic Orchestra of Chicago concerts on March 29. With its usual level of creativity and passion to reach diverse audiences, the Negaunee Music Institute found new ways to educate and enrich lives through its full suite of programs, including School and Family Concerts, its training for young musicians and many community initiatives. We are grateful for the dedication of the Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, our music director, Board of Trustees, administrative staff, volunteer groups, generous patrons and donors, whose support of the life-enriching programs and activities of the CSOA is essential, and allows us to continue to share music with audiences in our community and around the world.

treasurer’s report The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s financial results were progressing well for the first three quarters of our fiscal year. Among the highlights, we were on track to deliver record ticket sales revenue. Unfortunately, the end of the CSOA’s fiscal year brought with it significant challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning in mid-March, the ban on public gatherings halted concerts and other revenue-generating activity, resulting in a 25% reduction to operating revenue for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020. Decisive yet difficult actions to curb operating expenses enabled us to offset a portion of these revenue losses. The donor response to our Music Ahead campaign, launched specifically to mitigate a portion of the losses caused by the pandemic, was very positive, allowing us to achieve total annual philanthropic support of $25.7 million, in line with last year. In all, we reported an operating deficit of $4.4 million for the year. While a stark contrast from our anticipated overall results, we are nevertheless encouraged by and deeply appreciative of the spirit of collegiality among patrons, donors, Trustees and employees to achieve these results in such an extraordinary year. Despite significant turmoil in the financial markets, the Association’s balance sheet remains healthy, with net assets of $217 million as of June 30, 2020. Endowment and other investment assets are valued at $361 million, and we further reduced the Association’s long-term debt by another $2.3 million. We continue to pursue our strategic pillar of financial sustainability for the long term by carefully managing our cost structure, seeking new and expanded revenue opportunities and engaging with our existing donors and patrons while growing our base of fans and supporters here in Chicago and around the world. What exactly the future holds remains uncertain, but we look forward to a time when we can be together again in Symphony Center, enjoying the music-making of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, our Symphony Center Presents series and numerous education and community programs delivered through the Negaunee Music Institute. Until then, we appreciate the ongoing support we have received from our donors and patrons as we navigate these challenging times.

cso resound The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ latest recording, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar), was released on the house label, CSO Resound, in December 2019. Recorded live in Orchestra Hall in September 2018, the release captures a masterwork by 20th century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich with Riccardo Muti leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Men of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, prepared by Chorus Director and Conductor Duain Wolfe, and renowned Russian bass Alexey Tikhomirov. The work reflects on the World War II tragedy in which German forces massacred more than 33,000 Jews over two days in September 1941 at Babi Yar, a ravine outside Kiev, Ukraine.
“Muti brings forth this range of emotion not only by ensuring that the vocalists whisper as well as roar, but also by the colors he draws from the orchestra. When the CSO strings swell, when the brass ignite shattering staccato chords, when the percussion seem to make the room tremble, we are hearing a virtuoso orchestra providing vivid commentary.” chicago tribune

The Chamber Music at the Art Institute of Chicago series presented three concerts in the museum’s Fullerton Hall, featuring repertoire curated by CSO musicians, preconcert talks about related artwork and postconcert gallery tours. Programs in 2019/20 were inspired by artists who lived and worked in Mexico in the mid-20th century, the iconic pop art of Andy Warhol and the lush traditions of the romantic era. Ensembles of CSO musicians performed free concerts of traditional and contemporary chamber music as part of the All-Access Chamber Music series. In 2019/20, concerts were offered at Symphony Center, South Shore Cultural Center and Nicholas Senn High School, another CPS partner of the Negaunee Music Institute. 29

cso school and family concerts
In November, nearly 7,500 students, families and teachers attended four CSO School and Family concerts conducted by former CSO Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima (above, two left photos). The all-Beethoven program, titled Bold Voices, featured excerpts from five of the composer’s symphonies and a solo appearance by pianist Yerin Yang, winner of the 2018 Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. For children ages 3-5, two Once Upon a Symphony® productions offered a magical introduction to classical music. Produced and presented in partnership with Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Boy and the Violin and Jack and the Beanstalk featured small ensembles of CSO musicians, along with vivid storytelling, costumes and multimedia. Nearly 4,300 people attended 14 performances for school groups and families (above, two right photos; opposite). In addition to the above concerts, the CSO welcomed 2,200 students to four open rehearsals during the 2019/20 season. As part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the CSO’s concert series for children, founded in 1919/20 by Frederick Stock, the Negaunee Music Institute provided free tickets and bus transportation for students from Chicago Public Schools. CSO School and Family Concerts are made possible with the generous support of Allstate Insurance Company, the Youth Education Program Sponsor, and by The Abbott Fund, John Hart and Carol Prins, Illinois Arts Council Agency, Kinder Morgan, Michael and Linda Simon, Walter and Caroline Sueske Charitable Trust and an anonymous donor.

training for young musicians Each season the Negaunee Music Institute presents the Chicago Youth in Music Festival, which supports young people who are passionate about classical music. In February, orchestra and band students from five partner CPS high schools and musicians from three community youth orchestras visited Symphony Center to participate in coaching sessions and side-by-side rehearsals with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (above, two center photos; opposite). On March 7, four extraordinary young soloists (above, right), accompanied by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and conductor Michael Christie, each performed a movement of a string concerto in the final round of the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, presented by the League of the CSOA and the Negaunee Music Institute. Violinist Isabella Brown, who was declared the winner, will perform in a CSO School and Family concert in a future season. The CSO’s Percussion Scholarship Program continued to offer intensive, weekly percussion instruction to Chicago students in grades 4–12. The program, founded by CSO percussion Patricia Dash and Lyric Opera Orchestra Assistant Principal Percussion Douglas Waddell, marked its 25th anniversary in the 2019/20 season. The SCP Jazz series featured a variety of educational activities for young musicians, including a three-day residency with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, supported in part by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund. Students from Chicago Public Schools, Roosevelt University and the CYSO Jazz Orchestra attended master classes, workshops (above, left, photo by Elliot Mandel) and a concert by the legendary ensemble.
Support for the Chicago Youth in Music Festival was generously provided by Allstate Insurance Company, the Youth Education Program Sponsor, and by Michael and Linda Simon. The Crain-Maling Foundation is the lead sponsor of the Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition. Funding for educational programs during the 2019/20 SCP Jazz season was generously provided by Dan J. Epstein, Judy Guitelman and the Dan J. Epstein Family Foundation.

serving the city through music Notes for Peace Founded in 2017, the Negaunee Music Institute’s Notes for Peace program partners with families from Purpose Over Pain, a support and advocacy group for parents affected by gun violence. The program fosters the composing of songs that commemorate deceased loved ones. In December 2019, eight families wrote personalized songs in collaboration with teaching artists Sara Lee and Rex Horan from the Irene Taylor Trust and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago Fellows. Their songs were performed by professional vocalists at a concert at Austin Town Hall (above, three left photos; opposite) and were recorded at Chicago Recording Company. The program continued in a virtual format in June 2020, with three families participating (pictured above, right: Christina Johnson and sons Aaron and Calen, with portrait of Christopher Kyle Johnson). Visit notesforpeace.org to find lyrics, recordings and portraits of loved ones.
Juvenile Justice In March, the Civic Orchestra Fellows, along with Sara Lee and Charles Stuart from the Irene Taylor Trust, led a week-long songwriting residency at the Illinois Youth Center - Chicago. Over the course of 10 sessions, 12 young people created original songs, which were performed for their peers at a private concert.

cso from home Within days of the first canceled concerts due to the COVID-19 pandemic, videos of CSO and Chorus musicians performing at home and offering messages of encouragement appeared on the CSO’s social media channels. Through the end of the season, CSO musicians, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and CSOA staff curated videos, radio broadcasts, playlists, articles and virtual events for audiences to enjoy from their own homes. These musical connections have crossed borders, generations and perspectives to bring us closer virtually while we cannot be together in the concert hall. Musician Videos From March through June, more than 55 musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago participated in video performances of music by J.S. and C.P.E. Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Mozart, Prokofiev, Ravel, Sibelius, Florence Price and more. Civic Orchestra 100th Anniversary Virtual Concert On March 29, the date of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago’s very first concert in 1920, the ensemble premiered a virtual concert featuring an excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and seven world premieres by young composers, commissioned specially for the occasion. From the CSO’s Archives: Maestro’s Choice—For All Music Lovers in These Difficult Times A new weekly CSO radio broadcast series, curated by Riccardo Muti, began airing on WFMT in April. The limited-run series featured broadcasts from the Rosenthal Archives, as well as recordings from the Orchestra’s vast discography, including many releases on CSO Resound. Digital Premieres & Watch Parties On April 12, the CSO presented its 2014 concert video of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with Riccardo Muti conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, as a free Facebook Premiere event. An encore presentation of Verdi’s Requiem with Muti leading the Chicago Symphony and Chorus, recorded live in 2013, was streamed on cso.org and the CSO’s social media channels for three watch parties in May.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association thanks Bank of America for its special support of the CSO Radio broadcast series.

cso from home Virtual Day of Music In conjunction with the International Music Foundation’s Make Music Chicago, the CSO and Riccardo Muti joined the celebration on June 21 with a Virtual Day of Music. Throughout the day, a total of 18 premiere performances by Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus musicians, as well as special guests, were posted on the CSO’s social media channels. Fellows of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago contributed a video performance, originally created in lieu of in-school performances, of the Juba Dance from Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 for students in Chicago Public Schools. From the CSO’s Archives: Gems From the Vault Hosted on cso.org, Gems From the Vault offered free streaming of historic CSO broadcasts, many available for the first time in decades. Programs featured former CSO music directors Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim, the CSO’s former Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus Pierre Boulez and other distinguished conductors. My Favorite CSO Members of the CSO shared their favorite recordings from the Orchestra’s discography, which were compiled into customized playlists available on cso.org. CSO for Kids Resources from previous CSO School and Family concerts were made available on cso.org to enhance remote learning opportunities for school-age audiences. Education and Community Engagement Following the shift to remote learning, members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago continued to engage with young musicians through the School and Community Partnership Program of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. Teachers at six Chicago Public Schools received a toolkit of instructional videos, created by Civic musicians and designed to help students improve their instrumental technique. In addition, members of the CSO who regularly coach Civic musicians transitioned to virtual coaching sessions. Students in the CSO’s Percussion Scholarship Program continued to take lessons remotely and recorded video performances for their Spring Recital. The Negaunee Music Institute’s Notes for Peace program, which helps bereaved families to seek solace through song in the aftermath of gun violence, also continued virtually in June. Learn more about Notes for Peace on p. 38.

spotlight on philanthropy The CSOA is grateful to the many individuals, philanthropic foundations, government agencies and corporate partners who contributed a total of $25.7 million in direct operational support during the 2019/20 season. This amount includes gifts to Music Ahead, a matching challenge made possible through leadership support from an anonymous donor, the Julian Family Foundation, Helen Zell, The Negaunee Foundation and Rosemarie and Dean L. Buntrock. From April through June, the challenge matched all donations, dollar for dollar, including the value of tickets to canceled concerts that were converted into charitable contributions. A total of $44.7 million was raised during the 2019/20 season in support of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association. In addition to funds contributed for general operations during the 2019/20 and future seasons, generous gifts were received from donors for CSOA Endowment funds and for fixed assets, and from unrestricted estate bequests that are designated to support the long-term stability of the organization. Gift commitments received during the season also helped to launch SEMPRE ALWAYS: The Campaign for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with a goal of raising $175 million over a multiyear period.

Civic Orchestra of Chicago Scholarships Members of the Civic Orchestra receive an annual stipend to help offset some of their living expenses during their training in Civic. The following donors have generously underwritten a Civic musician(s) for the 2019/20 season. Nine Civic members participate in the Civic Fellowship program, a rigorous artistic and professional development curriculum that supplements their membership in the full orchestra. Major funding for this program is generously provided by The Julian Family Foundation. To learn more, please contact Dakota Williams, Associate Director, Education and Community Engagement Giving, at williamsd@cso.org or 312-294-3156.
