Thursday’s E series is marked by music that tells a story, from Ravel’s iconic orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, led by Riccardo Muti, to Debussy’s shimmering depiction of the sea in La mer. Musical titans take the stage as iconoclastic organist Cameron Carpenter performs Poulenc’s organ concerto and Saint-Saëns’ elegant Organ Symphony and renowned pianist Maurizio Pollini makes his long-awaited return with Mozart’s dark-hued final piano concerto. Experience the uplifting power of Antonio Vivaldi’s joyous Gloria and other Vivaldi treasures with early-music specialist Giovanni Antonini, and witness Dvorák’s majestic New World Symphony, conducted by Thomas Wilkins, in this eclectic and electrifying series.

Jurowski, Helmchen & Shostakovich 8 6/24 Muti Conducts Beethoven Missa solemnis Experience a trio of late-period masterpieces. Beethoven’s impassioned Missa solemnis ends with a plea for universal peace, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 looks ahead to 19th-century sounds and Rachmaninov’s lush Symphonic Dances is a touching reminiscence of the composer’s homeland. These works stand in contrast with stirring wartime statements including Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin.
