The program features two cutting-edge works and a world premiere by Xavier Foley demonstrate his virtuosity and passion for solo works on the double bass, and two compositions for strings by composer Mark O’Connor that fuse traditional Old-Time fiddling melodies with unique contemporary twists.

Composer and cellist Andrea Casarrubios performs two of her own compositions, including a world premiere, alongside former Mead Composer-in-Residence Osvaldo Golijov’s seminal work Tenebrae, a contrast of images of war with the innocence and optimism of childhood.

Works by composers Richard Einhorn, Julia Perry, Walter Piston and Leonard Bernstein offer a sweeping exploration of the postmodern American classical music era. The program culminates in a celebration of new music in the 21st century with a world premiere violin duo performed by Jessie Montgomery and virtuoso Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine.
