uring these unprecedented D times, we must remain positive and take comfort in the power of music, which allows us to communicate across borders and to express the depths of our humanity. Riccardo Muti  Zell Music Director, Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Across Chicago and around the world, the Negaunee Music Institute (NMI) connects people and their communities to the extraordinary musical resources of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Through industry-leading programs that educate audiences, train musicians and serve diverse communities, NMI transforms lives through active participation in music. While the global pandemic presents significant challenges to how, where and when activities can take place, children should have access to music education, young instrumentalists must continue their musical development, and the arts are more important than ever. In response, NMI has reimagined its programming to be delivered primarily online for so long as it is necessary and in person when safe and healthy for all involved. Through innovation, flexibility, collaboration and the generous support of donors, the Negaunee Music Institute continues to fulfill its mission of education and community engagement.

EDUCATING AUDIENCES ONLINE

CSO for Kids Produced in partnership with Chicago Children’s Theatre, a new series of storybook videos brings music to life through the exploration of contemporary children’s literature. Performances by musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are interwoven with animated illustrations and narration by celebrated Chicagoans, including First Lady Amy Eshleman, jazz legend Kurt Elling and others. View the series for free on CSOtv and on the   CSO’s YouTube channel.

To deepen engagement with the storybook videos, the Negaunee Music Institute is collaborating with over 50 Chicago Public Schools teachers who are creating educational resources connected to the video content. PREPARATORY GUIDES The Music in George’s Head

Chicago Public Schools Partnerships

As a remote learning partner for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), NMI is permitted to engage directly with groups of students and teachers online. Throughout the season, select elementary school teachers will attend workshops led by guest lecturers and NMI Teaching Artists and develop curricula based on the CSO for Kids video series. In addition, CSO musicians will host master classes and Q&A sessions for high school students across CPS and in the western suburbs.

VIRTUAL MUSICIAN TRAINING

Civic Orchestra of Chicago The Civic Orchestra — the CSO’s prestigious program for emerging professional musicians — marks its 102nd season with a rigorous curriculum of online training. Via Zoom, 86 Civic members participate in monthly coaching led by a faculty of over 20 musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in addition to a monthly series of professional development workshops with special guests, including Ken-David Masur. As the season progresses, Civic Orchestra musicians will also present a series of virtual artistic projects online and in person when possible. More details will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, watch Civic’s 100th anniversary virtual concert, which premiered on YouTube on March 29, 2020.

Civic Orchestra Fellows

Now in its eighth season, the Civic Fellowship program prepares participants for multifaceted careers in music. Through a series of workshops and leadership of various projects, fellows develop skills and experience in artistic planning and chamber music performance, music education, community engagement and program management. Learn about the nine 2020/21 fellows and their activities on cso.org/civic.

hese are such strange T and difficult times, and I am grateful to the Civic Orchestra for continuing its training online. It’s giving me opportunities to learn, challenge myself and discover new ways of connecting with our ever-changing community. Najette Abouelhadi cello

ur mission is to help the Civic Orchestra members become the best musicians and O positive influencers they can be, ensuring that the music they make is engaging for and enjoyed by communities throughout Chicago. We can accomplish this by exploring how technology helps to overcome barriers and provides new opportunities to think creatively and act courageously. Ken-David Masur  Principal Conductor, Civic Orchestra of Chicago

Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative The Negaunee Music Institute is a co-founding organization and lead partner of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative (CMPI), which prepares young musicians from underrepresented backgrounds to attend top music schools. Now entering its second full year, the Initiative supports nearly 100 participants in grades 6–12.

artnership with the CSO P is the absolute highlight for our CMPI Fellows. It shows them the tangible connection between the hard work of today’s preparation that leads to the joy and purpose of tomorrow’s career. Adrienne Thompson Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative Project Director

Students are admitted on the basis of musical aptitude and financial need. Select CSO and Civic Orchestra musicians are private teachers or mentors for CMPI Fellows, in addition to leading audition preparation workshops, virtual master classes and panel discussions. CMPI Fellows are also invited to observe select Civic Orchestra seminars led by CSO musicians. Learn more about the Initiative, the CMPI Fellows and the other lead partners, including the Merit School of Music, at chicagopathways.org.

Percussion Scholarship Program Led by CSO Percussion Patricia Dash and Lyric Opera Orchestra Assistant Principal Percussion Douglas Waddell, the Percussion Scholarship Program (PSP) offers intensive, weekly percussion instruction on a full scholarship basis to Chicago youth in grades 4–12. Students are selected through a competitive application process that is followed by a provisional period and invitation to participate through eighth grade. Select students are invited to continue in the program through high school. Biweekly lessons and student recitals are currently conducted via Zoom. PSP students have also been featured numerous times on NPR’s From the Top radio series. Listen to the most recent appearance online.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Notes for Peace Launched in March 2017, the Notes for Peace project empowers parents who have lost children to gun violence to create original songs of tribute. With guidance from the Civic Fellows, guest teaching artists from the U.K.-based Irene Taylor Trust and professional vocalists, parents compose, perform live and professionally record their music, which is then featured alongside family photos and lyrics on notesforpeace.org.

I think music is one of the most powerful tools on the planet to process anything. Music reaches us on a soul level, and in this particular case, music is used to heal a grieving heart. Meagan McNeal  Notes for Peace vocalist

As of June 2020, songwriting sessions have been conducted via Zoom, and the studio recordings are produced by Chicago Recording Company. To date, 54 families have written songs to honor lives lost to gun violence. View recent recording sessions on the   CSO’s YouTube channel. o p p o s i t e pa g e : Participants in the Notes for Peace project pose with photos of loved ones lost to gun violence.
