Welcome to Symphony Center, home of the great Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As one who has advo cated for the preservation of culture and championed music as a universal language all my life, nothing pleases me more than to see you at concerts before this orchestra that has given beauty and cultural enrichment to generations.

From start to finish, this season includes music of personal significance. When I first led the CSO, at the Ravinia Festival in 1973, it was in Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, a work we revisit this October. At that first con cert, the Orchestra made a profound impression on me, as I realized it was an ensemble without limits. I am grateful to the musicians of all the orches tras that I have conducted around the world, but the CSO is truly unique and continues to amaze me. The way the musicians have responded to my musi cal ideas and sense of family that we immediately created together is what inspired me to accept this prestigious commitment. We love each other very much, and the years have gone by very, very fast.

We close the season with Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, which I have often compared to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel—not only for its monumentality but also as a symbol of our humanity approaching the divine. Perhaps it is more than a coincidence that my first score to Missa solemnis is dated 1973, the same year I was introduced to this great orchestra.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to Symphony Center for the opening weeks of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 132nd season.

This season pays tribute to Riccardo Muti as we cele brate his artistry, which has profoundly moved audiences during his past twelve seasons as music director. During the week of concerts, Muti conducts the U.S. premiere of a rediscovered work by composer Samuel ColeridgeTaylor and marks his 500th concert with the CSO since his debut at the Ravinia Festival in 1973. The following week, Maestro Muti and the CSO mark seventy years since the death of Sergei Prokofiev, a composer who has a special history with the Orchestra, in performances of his Symphony no. 5. For his third subscription program, Muti conducts Franck’s Le chasseur maudit and Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, which he conducted on his debut concert with the CSO. Yefim Bronfman joins Muti and the CSO during the opening concerts and Symphony Ball, perform ing as soloist in Brahms’s Piano Concerto no. 1 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 22, respectively.

This fall, the CSO is joined by esteemed guest conductors including Constantine Kitsopoulos, Christian Thielemann, Xian Zhang, Edward Gardner, Harry Bicket, and Manfred Honeck. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff, pianist Simon Trpčeski, and cellist Gautier Capuçon are featured soloists. In October, there are four performances of the 1984 Academy Award–winning film Amadeus with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and we are pleased to welcome the Joffrey Ballet to Orchestra Hall for three performances, including the world premieres of two ballets. In addition, the CSO returns to Wheaton College in November. Marking both the start of the twenty-fifth season of CSO MusicNOW and its return to Symphony Center, Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery and musicians from the CSO perform two concerts of contemporary works this fall.

The Symphony Center Presents season opens its Jazz series with pianist and composer Chucho Valdés in La Creación (The Creation), an SCP co-commission for big band, Afro-Cuban percussion, and vocals. Next, violinist Midori and pia nist Jean-Yves Thibaudet perform a duo recital to begin the SCP Chamber Music series, while David Fray launches the SCP Piano series with works by Schubert and Liszt. A highlight of the season is the return of the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Kirill Petrenko, for its first appearance in Chicago since 2009.

Welcome to Symphony Center!

October 4, 2022, marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the opening of Symphony Center. The gala concert on that night in 1997 celebrated the completion of a threeyear restoration and renovation of Orchestra Hall. The New York Times touted, “it sounded altogether new, with a depth and spaciousness never before heard here.”

That same year, our long-standing presentation series, first established as Allied Arts in 1930, was renamed Symphony Center Presents to align with the facility’s new name. Symphony Center Presents offered an opening festival with star-studded performances in its inaugural season that included over seventy concerts by more than ninety artists and ensembles who came to perform in the self-proclaimed “Musical Heart of Chicago.”

It was my pleasure to have been a part of that first season, and it is my hope that we have been able to continue the tremendous legacy that brings the world’s finest musical artists to Orchestra Hall’s Armour Stage for all Chicagoans. Our fall 2022 programs continue that tradition by featuring a Symphony Center Presents Jazz series co-commission by the great Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés, an all-Beethoven violin and piano recital by Midori and JeanYves Thibaudet, a solo recital by pianist David Fray, and the return of the phe nomenal Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of its Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko. La Creación (The Creation)

The great Cuban pianist and composer

Chucho Valdés presents La Creación (The Creation) his new work for big band, AfroCuban percussion, and vocals. La Creación is a suite in four movements that explores the story of creation according to the Regla de Ocha, the Afro-Cuban religion known as Santería. It is also a summation of an extraordinary career.

“This new work represents the accumulation of all my experiences and everything I’ve learned in music,” says Valdés, who celebrated his eight ieth birthday in October 2021. “This is a moment of full maturity, personally and musically, and I feel prepared to do this work.”

If the founding of the band Irakere indicated a turn in his musical quest by leaving large ensembles behind, La Creación represents a return to big-band sonorities, but “with the experience of the road traveled,” says Valdés. “I felt I could return to this format now and with my own language, take it to a higher level than I had reached.”

In La Creación, Valdés delves into thematic concerns he has explored in works such as La Misa Negra, an early milestone in his career, and Canto a Dios, a more recent composition in which he fused jazz with symphonic music.

The beliefs of the Catholic religion and the Regla de Ocha have coexisted in Cuba for cen turies. Whether it was a survival strategy or a simple adaptation to a new context, the orishas, the African deities, assumed the identities of Catholic saints early on. “Canto a Dios looks at certain themes from the point of view of the Catholic faith,” says Valdés. “La Creación focuses on Olodumare, the Creator, God in the Yoruba universe. It’s the other part of my roots, of my family, and my history.”

Musically, in his new work, Valdés uses a sonic palette that includes elements of Santería ritual music, African music, the blues, and what he describes as “an atmosphere in the style of Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew.”

In a career spanning more than sixty years as a solo artist and bandleader, Chucho Valdés has distilled elements of the Afro-Cuban music tradition, jazz, classical music, and rock into a deeply personal style. Winner of seven Grammy and four Latin Grammy awards, Valdés received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy and was also inducted in the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. He has also received a DC Jazz Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, joining his name to a distinguished list that includes Kenny Barron, James Moody, Ellis Marsalis, George Wein, and Dave Brubeck.

Dionisio Jesús “Chucho” Valdés Rodríguez was born to a family of musicians in Quivicán, Havana province, Cuba, in 1941. His first teacher was his father, the great pianist, composer, and bandleader Ramón “Bebo” Valdés. He began taking lessons in piano, theory, and solfège at the age of five and continued his formal musical education at the Municipal Music Conservatory of Havana, from which he graduated at the age of fourteen. A year later, he formed his first jazz trio, and in 1959, he debuted with the famed orchestra Sabor de Cuba, directed by his father.

Chucho Valdés is perhaps best known as the founder, pianist, and main composer and arranger (1973–2005) of the landmark Cuban ensemble Irakere. Selections from their unan nounced debut at Carnegie Hall, as part of the 1977 Newport Jazz Festival, were later included on Irakere (CBS), the band’s debut recording in the United States, which won a Grammy Award as Best Latin Recording in 1979. That original band featured future jazz stars such as Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo Sandoval. Overtime Irakere became a rolling university of Afro-Cuban music while also featuring influential musicians.

In 1998—having won his second Grammy the previous year for Habana (Verve) as a member of

trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s group Crisol—Valdés launched a parallel career as a solo player and small-group leader. An enormously fruitful period followed, highlighted by albums such as Solo: Live in New York (Blue Note, 2001) and New Conceptions (Blue Note, 2003), as well as quartet recordings including Bele Bele en La Habana (Blue Note, 1998), Briyumba Palo Congo (Blue Note, 1999), and Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note, 2000), which won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. Since then, Valdés has won Grammy awards for Juntos para Siempre (Calle 54, 2007), the duet recording with his father Bebo; Chucho’s Steps (Comanche, 2010), which introduced his new group, the AfroCuban Messengers; and Jazz Batá 2 (Mark Avenue Records, 2018), which explores the use of the sacred batá drums, used in ritual music of the Yoruba religion, in the traditional jazz trio instead of the conventional trap set.

In early 2018, Valdés completed a two-year tour with Trance, a two-piano duo project high lighted by a live recording, Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac (Jazz Village/Comanche Music, 2016), which won a Latin Grammy Award for the Best Latin Jazz Album. His most recent release is I Missed You Too! with Paquita d’Rivera (Sunnyside, 2022).

John Beasley Arranger, Conductor

Award-winning and Emmy nominee, John Beasley is a versatile pianist, composer, and arranger, who began his career in his twenties backing jazz icons Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard.

Since then, Beasley has performed with a wide range of artists including Dianne Reeves, Ivan Lins, John Patitucci, Chaka Khan, Christian McBride, and Carly Simon, to name a few, and has been music director for international tours with Steely Dan, AR Rahman, and Queen Latifah.

Beasley is the music director for the International Jazz Day global gala concerts hosted by the Herbie Hancock Jazz Institute, which earned him an Emmy Award nomina tion for the 2016 broadcast of Jazz at the White House, hosted by President Obama. Beasley’s work as a composer and arranger extends beyond jazz with many credits in television, such as Star Trek: TNG, Cheers, and Fame and in films scored by Thomas Newman includ ing 1917, James Bond’s Spectre and Skyfall, Finding Dory, He Named Me Malala, Shawshank Redemption, and Let Them All Talk.

As a recording artist, Beasley has a dozen albums and has earned nine Grammy Award nominations. His recent project MONK’estra, a big-band that has recorded three albums, has received six nominations and one win. He also earned a Latin Grammy nomination for an album he produced with Portuguese singer Maria Mendes and the Metropole Orchestra. His latest album is a Charlie Parker project, Bird Lives, which he co-conducted, arranged, and produced for ACT Music with Stuttgart’s SWR Big Band.

Beasley also worked as music director for TV specials and series, including Sports Illustrated: 50 Years of Beautiful and musical competitions Duets with John Legend and Sing Your Face Off. Beasley was lead arranger for ten years on American Idol, with his first year as associate music director ushering Carrie Underwood’s victory. Recently, Beasley has been working with youth and professional big bands.

Hilario Durán Arranger, Conductor

Cuban-born Hilario Durán grew up in Havana in a musical family. He began working as a professional musician in Cuba’s Los Papa CunCun Ensemble and, in the 1970s, was chosen to succeed Chucho Valdés as director of Cuba’s modern big band, Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna.

Durán also toured internationally and performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand as part of Arturo Sandoval’s band working as its pianist/ keyboardist, arranger, and musical director for nine years.

After making his mark in Cuba, Durán con tinued to hone his skills as a pianist, composer, arranger, and musical director of remarkable vir tuosity. He is a multi-Canadian Juno Award win ner and nominee, an American Grammy Award nominee, a multi-Canadian National Jazz Award winner and nominee, and the proud recipient of the 2007 Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award from Latin Jazz USA for his outstanding contributions to Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz.

As a Cuban-Canadian jazz pianist, Hilario Durán is a fixture on the Toronto music scene. He immigrated to Canada in 1998 and was named as “One of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians” in 2009. Durán was named 2013 Best Artist of the Year by the Toronto Musicians’ Association and also as 2014 Best Vision Award winner (Premio a la Trayectoria) for his work as an entrepreneur and director of his musical company Es Mi Musica Productions. He is also an educator at Toronto’s Humber College, acting as a piano teacher and ensemble director.

Hilario Durán has been based in Toronto for the past two decades, but his musical heart and soul remains closely connected to the land of his birth. He has continued to collaborate with Cuban musicians. His 2016 album Contumbao, recorded in 2016 in Cuba’s famed EGREM recording studio, features a cast of musical heavyweights who assembled in Havana to per form eleven original compositions by Durán.

Brian Lynch Trumpet

Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Brian Lynch brings depth and breadth of experience to his music. A former member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he received wide acclaim during his long tenures working with Latin jazz legend Eddie Palmieri and straight-ahead master Phil Woods. He has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist, he has released over twenty critically acclaimed albums featuring his distinc tive composing and arranging and has toured the world at the helm of various ensembles.

Voted Trumpeter of the Year and recipient of the Record of the Year Award by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2017, Lynch has been also recognized by top placing in the DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls (no. 3 Trumpet Critics Poll) as well as feature stories and highly rated reviews for his work in the New York Times, Jazz Times, and DownBeat. He has received six Grammy Award nominations and garnered a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Latin Jazz Album. He is also the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet the Composer.

Professor of jazz and studio music at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami, Lynch has conducted clinics, workshops, and residencies the world over. He is artist-in-residence for the Jazz Institute at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music (2010 to present) and artistic director of Ensamble Tonica in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Lynch now devotes the majority of his per formance and creative time to his own musical endeavors, centering around his own groups and recording label Hollistic MusicWorks. Lynch is a Yamaha Artist and endorses Austin

Custom Brass mouthpieces and the Lefreque Sound Bridge.

Etienne Charles Trumpet

Trinidad-born Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller, who is continuously search ing for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them. His lush trumpet sound, varied compositional textures, and pulsating percussive grooves enable him to invoke trance, soothing and exciting listeners while referencing touchy and sometimes controversial subjects.

A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Award recipient, he researches his compositions by traveling to different regions to meet with musicians and cultural leaders to both observe and participate in rituals in order to be fully immersed into the cultures that he is studying. His work is actively connecting the diaspora and drawing lines to regions at the roots of migrations. Highlighting marginalized com munities and engaging with them has been his mission, evidenced by projects such as Carnival: The Sound of a People, Vol. 1; San Jose Suite; Creole Soul; and Folklore.

In June 2012, he was written into the U.S. Congressional Record for his musical contribu tions to Trinidad, Tobago, and the world. In 2013, his album Creole Soul reached no. 1 for three weeks on the JazzWeek Chart and was eventually named no. 3 Jazz Album of the Year by JazzWeek Also in 2013, he received the Caribbean Heritage Trailblazer Award from the Institute of Caribbean Studies (Washington, D.C.). In 2016, he was the recipient of the Michigan State University Teacher Scholar Award, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Millennial Swing Award, and was a featured panelist and performer at the White House for a Caribbean Heritage Month Briefing. He made his debut as producer and songwriter on the album Petite Afrique by Somi

(Sony/Okeh 2017), which won Outstanding Jazz Album at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards.

He currently serves as associate professor of studio music and jazz at the University of Miami, Patricia L. Frost School of Music.

Marcus Strickland Alto Saxophone

Born in Gainesville and raised in Miami, Florida, Grammy Award–nominated tenor saxophonist Marcus Strickland has been active on the New York jazz scene since the 1990s. He devel oped as a musician along side twin brother and drummer E.J. Strickland, with a uniquely rhyth mic sensibility. Raised by a father who worked as a lawyer and played the drums during his spare time, Marcus learned musical rudiments in the context of drumming, emerging as a uniquely interactive player. Early influences include Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and Whit Sidener, who helped him hone harmonic knowledge in the context of the saxophone. In 1997, Strickland received a scholarship to study at the New School in New York City, earning a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance.

Accompanying artists such as Roy Haynes (2002–05), Jeff “Tain” Watts (2004–13), and Chris Dave (2013 to present), Strickland in his early career focused on mastering the jazz idiom— especially bebop—while reaching into the future. Inspired by low-mid register beats, Strickland took up the bass clarinet. He placed third in the 2002 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and launched his own music label, Strick Muzik, in 2006. DownBeat International Critics Poll named him Rising Star on Tenor Saxophone in 2010 and Rising Star on Soprano Saxophone in 2008. He was also named the 2006 Best New Artist by JazzTimes maga zine’s Readers’ Poll. He was signed to Blue Note Records in 2015, and in 2017 was invited to play on bassist Christian McBride’s New Jawn.

Strickland has released ten solo recordings to date and his band and concept project Twi-Life thrives at the intersection of jazz and hip-hop. Strickland spends his time between New York and Miami, where he serves as associate profes sor of practice in the department of studio music at the University of Miami, Patricia L. Frost School of Music.

Carlos Averhoff, Jr. Tenor Saxophone

Cuban saxophonist Carlos Averhoff, Jr., is a composer and bandleader of two musical projects, Iresi and iQba. He is a recording artist at Sunnyside Records jazz label and a Grammy nomi nee for his collaboration with Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo

Following the legacy of his father, Carlos Averhoff, Sr., Carlos Averhoff, Jr., has estab lished his name among the new generation of Cuban musicians. His music offers a new hybrid sound of modern Cuban jazz, where his compo sitions and arrangements paint a landscape of contemporary harmonies and rhythms from his native land.

As a bandleader and side man, Averhoff has performed in recognized stages and jazz festi vals around the world including Carnegie Hall, the Philharmonie in Paris, Kraków Philharmonic, Monte-Carlo Sporting Club, Berklee Performance Center, Scullers Jazz Club, Blue Note Jazz Club, and Angela Peralta Theater; and at the Barcelona, Detroit, Toronto, and Irapuato International jazz festivals. He has also collabo rated with well-known artists from the jazz and Latin jazz scenes, such as Chucho Valdés and Irakere; drummers Louis Hayes, Jimmy Cobb, Bob Moses, and Horacio “El Negro” Hernández; pianists Jason Moran and Roberto Fonseca; and saxophonists Dave Liebman, Greg Osby, Bill Pierce, and Paquito D’Rivera.

Averhoff studied jazz performance at the Berklee College of Music, and graduated suma cum laude before continuing his education at the New England Conservatory, where he earned his master’s degree. Carlos Averhoff, Jr., took instruction from jazz luminaries including Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Ed Tomassi, Frank Tiberi, Greg Osby, Bill Pierce, Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, Cecil McBee, Ran Blake, John McNeil, and Donny McCaslin.

José A. Gola Double Bass, Electric Bass

Havana native José Armando Gola has played bass since the age of thirteen and studied music at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Cuba. He plays both upright and electric bass in various settings, tours internation ally, and performs at major jazz festivals. Despite his youth, Gola has worked with Gonzalo Rubalcaba for the past seven years in addition to performing with Arturo Sandoval, Alejandro Sanz, Francisco Céspedes, Eldar Djangirov, and many others.

Gola has appeared on three Grammynominated albums by Francisco Céspedes (Paseo, Codes, and Te Acuerdas), on Arturo Sandoval’s Grammy-winning Rumba Palace, and Alejandro Sanz’s Grammy-winning El Tren De Los Momentos. He has also appeared on albums by Hector Martignon, Eldar Djangirov, Raúl Di Blasio, Felipe Lamoglia, V.I.P.-Jazz, Marisela Verena, Mayra Casales, Ignacio Berroa, Jose Conde, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Thalía Thalia, Eckroth & Lamothe 6, and Andy Gola & Colé Colé. He has also made recordings with pop singers including Jennifer Lopez, Luis Enrique, and many others.

His first album as leader is entitled Gola: Live Things, which features Tony Perez, Felipe Lamoglia, Mike Rodriguez, Rafael Solano,

Ludwig Afonso, Philbert Armenteros, and William Paredes. Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Ignacio Berroa appear as special guests.

Dafnis Prieto Drums

Dafnis Prieto’s revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the Latin and jazz music scenes. Various awards include a 2011 MacArthur Fellowship Award, a Grammy Award and a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for Dafnis Prieto Big Band Back to the Sunset in 2018, a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for Dafnis Prieto Sextet Transparency in 2021, a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for Absolute Quintet, a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2007, and Up and Coming Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2006.

Also a gifted educator, Prieto has conducted numerous master classes, clinics, and workshops throughout the world. He was a faculty member in jazz studies at New York University from 2005 to 2014, and in 2015 became a faculty member of Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Prieto published the groundbreaking analytical and instructional drum book, A World of Rhythmic Possibilities, in 2016. In 2020, he published Rhythmic Synchronicity, a book for non-drummers inspired by a course of the same name that Prieto developed at the Frost School of Music.

As a composer, Prieto has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and most notably for his own bands, which range from duets to big bands, and he has been featured on nine acclaimed recordings as a leader. In 2022, Prieto premiered a new work for Latin band and string orchestra—Tentación—performed by People of Earth with the Louisville Orchestra,

the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and the Britt Festival Orchestra.

Prieto is the founder of the independent music company Dafnison Music. He endorses Yamaha drums, Sabian cymbals, Latin Percussion, Evans drumheads, and Vic Firth sticks.

Roberto Jr. Vizcaino Percussion

Roberto Jr. Vizcaino was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1997. From an early age he became interested in music and especially the world of percussion in the footsteps of his father Roberto Vizcaino, his first teacher. He began taking classes in music at the age of three, and at five years old, traveled to Morelia, Mexico, to continue his training as a percussionist at his father’s side in addition to being a member of the percussion ensemble at the Conservatory of the Roses. He maintained an active performance career at various venues and festivals while continuing his education, earning praise from critics for his virtuosity.

Vizcaino has shared the stage with important figures of national and international spheres, including Roberto Vizcaino, Gabriel Hernández, Chucho Valdés, Konki Halmeyer, Reinaldo Melian, Germán Velazco, Orlando Valle “Maraca,” César “Pupi” Pedroso, Orquesta Aragón, Raul Pineda, Jorge Rivero, Tyler Mitchell, Alberto Pantaleon, King David, Francisco Mela, Giovanni Figueroa, Mario Patron, Benjamin Willis, Miguel Cruz, Edgar Dorantes, New Holland Manteca, Cristian Mendoza, and the Diak Group.

Erick Barberia Batás, Vocals

Erick Barberia grew up listening to the music of his father Luis Barberia, a singer with the famous Orquesta Jorrín, named after its founder and inventor of the cha-cha-chá. Erick began his studies in the Escuela Vocacional de Arte Juan Pablo Duarte in Cuba. He continued his educa tion at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA), graduating with a degree in folkloric dances, having studied with Lazaro Pedroso and Francisco Ofarril, who for twenty years was the principal dancer of the Conjunto Foklórico Nacional of Cuba.

After Barberia graduated, he worked as a dance teacher and began his professional career working in Matanzas as a dancer, actor, and percussionist with Proyecto Korimacao, directed by the actor Manuel Porto. In his two years with Proyecto Korimacao, he shared the stage with groups such as Pachito Alonso y sus Kini Kini, Conexción Salsera, Son Damas, la Farandula, la Karovan, la Reve, and Maravillas de Florida. Barberia then returned to Havana to teach Cuban folk song and percussion at ENA and the Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte.

Barberia currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. As a musician, he has had the pleasure of working with artists such as Chucho Valdéz, Papo Angarica, Michael Lazarus, Jesús Díaz, Sandy Pérez, Rebeca Mauleon, Pepito Gomez, Karl Perraza, Michael Spiro, Carlos Aldama, José Francisco Barroso, Susana Arenas, Raul Pineda, and Fito Reinoso, among others.

In addition to performing, Barberia also teaches Afro-Cuban folkloric and popular dance (salsa, mambo, cha-cha-chá), song, and percus sion. He teaches classes in local dance stud ies, private classes, workshops, grades 1–12, and universities.

Yosvani González Franco Batás, Vocals

Yosvani González Franco is a dance teacher and percus sionist. A graduate of Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, Cuba, he is also a specialist in AfroCuban percussion. Franco taught folk percussion on the ISA music faculty from 2003 to 2005, and later moved to Miami, Florida, where he has remained active in Afro-Cuban music in all aspects of religious rituals. In addition, he was a member of the rumbera group Heirs from 2007 to 2014. Franco has had the pleasure of working with Chucho Valdés in one of his most ambitious works, La Creación (The Creation), which premiered at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami on November 5, 2021, and later was presented in Lyon, Paris, and Barcelona. He has performed at other distinguished venues and festivals, includ ing the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, with SFJAZZ at the Paramount Theatre, and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Yenisel Valdés Fuentes Vocals

Yenisel Valdés Fuentes was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba. As a child, she showed an interest in singing and was performing at regional festivals by the age of four. She graduated from the Provincial School of Arts Instructors in 1990 with a degree in choral conducting. In 1995, she moved to Havana, where she performed with groups such as Los Reyes 73, Sello LA, and PG, among others. In 1997, José Luis “El Tosco” Cortés invited her to be part of the group NG La Banda, with which she traveled the world on concert tours and made five recordings. In 2001, she joined Los Van Van at the invitation of its founder Juan Formell, giving her the distinction of being the first woman in the band. A member of Los Van Van for sixteen years, she enjoyed great popularity and received five Latin Grammy Award nominations with the group. Fuentes currently lives in California, where she collabo rates with her husband Erick Barberia on their project Wobbly World, an ensemble that brings together experiences, languages, traditions, and instruments all over the globe.
