a note from the chair and the president

At this festive time of year, we hope you make Symphony Center your musical home. Great music thrives inside Orchestra Hall in concerts performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and guests of the Symphony Center Presents series as well as in programs produced by the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute. We would like to highlight just a few of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s extraordinary offerings occurring in the days and months ahead.

In December, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra welcomes four guest conductors—Thomas Søndergård, Dalia Stasevska, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, and Alastair Willis. In addition, CSO Artist-in-Residence Hilary Hahn returns to Chicago to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus performs Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms and is also featured on the CSO’s holiday program, Merry, Merry Chicago!

To begin the new year, conductor Marin Alsop leads the CSO in works by contemporary composers: This Midnight Hour by former Mead Composer-inResidence Anna Clyne, Rounds by current Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery, and Her Story, a CSO co-commission by Pulitzer Prize-winner Julia Wolfe. Her Story pays tribute to the pursuit of equal rights, representation, and access to democracy for women in America.

In mid-January, Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti and the CSO embark on a tour of the U.S. and Canada. We are delighted that the CSO can resume touring this season following a two-year hiatus. Soon after the Orchestra returns to Chicago, Klaus Mäkelä conducts the U.S. premiere of another CSO co-commission, Aino, by Jimmy López Bellido.

The Symphony Center Presents series brings several outstanding programs in December, including the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Itzhak Perlman and guests in The Fiddler’s House, Chanticleer (at Fourth Presbyterian Church), and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass. In January and February, SCP welcomes the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the young musicians of Mutter Virtuosi, Mavis Staples with special guest Celisse, and acclaimed tenor Juan Diego Flórez. On Valentine’s Day, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, celebrating its centennial season, makes its Symphony Center debut with its new music director, Gustavo Gimeno.

We send our warmest wishes for a music-filled, happy, and healthy new year and look forward to seeing you at Symphony Center soon.

ALL THE RIGHT NOTES

Of all the music Riccardo Muti has conducted during his tenure as music director, there are certain composers and works that stand out to musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

As part of an ongoing series, CSO musicians reflect on Muti’s artistry and the experience of working closely with him by sharing which of his interpretations from the podium they cherish most. In addition, learn how you can experience these performances in and away from Orchestra Hall.

“I have loved performing the Verdi operas with Maestro Muti. Many of us had never played these works before, and it was a joy to learn them with Maestro Muti, who has a consummate knowledge of Verdi’s texts and scores. What a sublime treat for the Orchestra and Chicago audiences!”

The Negaunee Music Institute’s Lasting Partnership with the Irene Taylor Trust

In 1995, the family of the late Irene Taylor established a U.K.-based charity with the intent to bridge two fields about which she and her husband, Lord Chief Justice Peter Taylor, cared deeply: prison reform and music. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Sara Lee, the Irene Taylor Trust’s inaugural program, Music in Prisons, developed workshops to support prisoners in composing, performing, and recording original music.

For over twenty-five years, the trust has expanded with additional songwriting programs for at-risk young people and ex-prisoners, all with the goal of using collaborative music-making to help individuals develop confidence, transferable skills and ambitions for the future.

The Irene Taylor Trust became a partner of the Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2013, when Sara Lee and Nick Hayes of ITT joined NMI staff and musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for a weeklong songwriting project, modeled on the Music in Prisons program, with youth at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. In the years since, the partnership between the two organizations has yielded more than 150 original pieces of music, including songs written by

teens incarcerated at the Illinois Youth CenterChicago, pregnant women and young parents through the Lullaby Project, and families that have lost children to gun violence through the Notes for Peace project. This season, projects take place at the Illinois Youth Center-Chicago, where youth will compose and perform original music supported by musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Notes for Peace concluded its most recent project with a performance at Epiphany Center for the Arts on November 20 of seven new songs dedicated to the memory of those lost to gun violence.

“The Irene Taylor Trust has shown us the power of collaborative songwriting,” said Jonathan McCormick, director of education and the NMI. “Our work together over the years has enabled the CSOA to engage with and serve communities across Chicago in ways we never could have imagined or implemented on our own.”

a note from mark williams, toronto symphony orchestra ceo

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to be visiting Symphony Center for the first time in our history as the culmination of a three-city tour—Ottawa, New York, and Chicago—to mark our Orchestra’s centennial celebration. It is a particularly auspicious occasion for us: it marks our first tour under Music Director Gustavo Gimeno, as well as his personal Symphony Center debut. Chicago and Toronto are sister cities but, beyond that official designation, have much in common. Proximity for one thing: we both sit on the Great Lakes and have almost identical populations. We also have similarly vibrant arts and musical cultures—with many challenges in common—but each of us uniquely shaped by our roles within our respective countries.

By some measures, Toronto is, at this moment in time, the most diverse city in the world, with more than half our population born outside Canada. Through our programming, our education and community-engagement initiatives, and our extensive commissioning program, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra increasingly reflects the cosmopolitan diversity of our city and country.

Tonight’s program includes Canadian composer Samy Moussa’s Symphony no. 2 (a TSO Commission), virtuosic Spanish violinist María Dueñas playing Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, and Gimeno’s personal selections from Prokofiev’s suites from Romeo and Juliet. It is programming like this that is the hallmark of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under Gimeno’s artistic leadership: showcasing new work from Canadian and international composers, beloved classics played by extraordinary soloists, and exciting new interpretations of the canon.

Thank you for joining us here tonight as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, our Centennial, and our debut in this phenomenal city.

Symphony No. 2

The world premiere of Samy Moussa’s Symphony no. 2 this past May was one of the high points of his year-long 2021–22 residency as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s first Spotlight Artist—an appointment that provided unprecedented access to the Orchestra’s artistic resources. “One interesting thing about the piece is the instrumentation,” the Montréal-born, Berlin-based composer said at the time. “The TSO allowed me anything I wanted for the commission, which was wonderful both for things I wanted to do and wanted not to do. Also, composing for the TSO, whatever I had in mind, I knew they could do. And this was liberating for me.”

And the things he didn’t want? “For one thing, no trombones,” he said. “For two reasons: to break the habit of relying on particular instruments for a certain kind of power and because my next project is a trombone concerto, I wanted to allow myself to yearn for the trombone.”

Trumpets are also replaced by flugelhorns, and a euphonium has been added to the usual roster of symphonic instruments. As he explained,

I wanted to create a new brass-section sound. Unlike trumpets and trombones, flugelhorns have a conical bore, so do euphonium and tuba. And for percussion, I also wanted a grouped sound, so only pitched instruments—no bass drum, triangle, cymbals, or gongs. Instead, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, crotales, and glockenspiel. That was very important for the aesthetic of the piece. Although it was not an inspiration to the piece, it’s almost like a moment in Xenophon’s Anabasis: “At this stage entered musicians blowing upon horns such as they use for signal calls. These musicians also played upon trumpets of raw untanned oxhide that not only measured notes but music like that of a harp.”

The twenty-minute score is divided into three movements, but the music never stops except for a very small moment near the end. “Watch for the chorale in the brass at the start. It comes back more than once, and of course, at the end.”

Moussa’s distinctiveness as a composer is marked by limpid approaches to harmony and form, and his works have had a succession of performances by such wide-ranging ensembles as the Vienna Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Dallas and Houston symphony orchestras, London Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Montréal Symphony Orchestra, and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

His catalog of published compositions (forty at last count) ranges from opera and oratorio to solo. Among these compositions are a dozen pieces for orchestra alone and another six for

orchestra and soloist. Works underway in his composition diary include commissions for the Dutch National Opera and Ballet Amsterdam and a flute concerto for Emmanuel Pahud. The Trombone Concerto will be premiered on April 14, 2023, with the Orchestre national de Lyon and trombonist Jörgen van Rijen.

Also an accomplished conductor, Moussa has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Opera, and Haydn Orchestra. Engagements this season include performances with Musikkollegium Winterthur and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 21

Edouard Lalo belongs to a group of composers who, for better or worse, are widely known by a single work—in his case, the spectacular showpiece for violin and orchestra performed at this concert. His talent found favor only in the final twenty-five years of his life, due most of all to the French musical tastes of the day, which favored lightness and grace over depth and seriousness and preferred vocal music, especially opera, over purely instrumental. He was greeted with indifference for so long that he gave up composing for almost ten years during the 1860s and early 1870s.

Inspiration to resume composing came largely from violinist Pablo de Sarasate, Spanish-born but a resident of Paris since the age of eleven. In 1874, Lalo, who could trace his Spanish ancestry back to the fifteenth century, composed his Violin Concerto in F major for Sarasate. Immediately after that, they began work together, this time on the Symphonie espagnole, which Sarasate premiered in Paris and then subsequently toured, establishing the composer’s reputation abroad for the first time.

The Symphonie espagnole was an instant success, credited with launching a trend in French works that pay tribute to Spain: Bizet’s opera Carmen (which debuted less than a month later); Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole, Alborada del gracioso and Boléro; and Debussy’s Ibéria

As for the work’s title, the original version had four movements, one more than the typical nineteenth-century concerto form, which was one of the reasons Lalo chose to call it a symphony rather than a concerto or a suite. “Artistically, a title means nothing, but commercially, a tainted, discredited title is never a good thing,” he wryly observed. “I kept the title because it conveyed my thought—that is to say, a violin solo soaring above the rigid form of an old symphony—and because it was less dull than those proposed to me.”

The first movement is the most substantial and traditionally symphonic of the four original movements (the intermezzo was added later). A brief orchestral introduction sets up the first entry of the soloist. The rhythm of a fiery Spanish dance then establishes itself. The second theme brings a taste of melancholy without slowing the music down at all.

The second movement is a lively, playful, almost waltz-like scherzo, in which the spicy

flavor of the Spanish folk style becomes stronger. The delicate orchestral textures include pizzicato strings, cleverly imitating the sound of a Spanish guitar.

The intermezzo that follows in this performance of the work was, curiously, left out of most concert performances for sixty years. (The earliest reference we have found is a 1933 Victor recording of Yehudi Menuhin, then seventeen years old, included in a recording with the Paris Symphony under Georges Enesco.) Its reinclusion doubtlessly does further injury to the “rigid symphonic form” Lalo was pushing against, but, in the right soloist’s hands, provides a compelling narrative bridge between the playful scherzo and the movements that follow.

The fourth movement opens with a serious, almost hymn-like theme in the orchestra, which the soloist takes up and carries forward with ever-increasing passion before a relaxing calmness is reasserted by the end of the movement. In the following finale, the full virtuosic flair of the piece is unleashed—slowly at first, but ultimately outdoing the previous movements for catchy tunes, lavish color, wit, spectacular solo fiddling, and sheer joyful energy.

sergei prokofiev

Born April 23, 1891; Sontsovka, Ukraine

Suite from Romeo and Juliet

It’s probably safe to say that the plays of William Shakespeare have inspired more music than any other body of literature, and none more so than Romeo and Juliet, his poignant story of the star-crossed lovers of old Verona, first staged during the 1590s. Over the following centuries, at least sixty other composers have written music directly inspired by the play.

A handful of these settings still receive regular performances, including Vincenzo Bellini’s opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues, 1830), Charles Gounod’s five-act Roméo et Juliette (1864), and Hector Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette (1839), a dramatic symphony that alternates vocal segments based on Émile Deschamps’s French translation of the play, with orchestral movements. Thirty years after Berlioz, young Tchaikovsky side-stepped the thorny question of how to set Shakespeare’s words to music by creating a strictly orchestral setting, evoking the play’s basic emotions without attempting a direct, descriptive narrative.

Tchaikovsky’s three great ballet scores—Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker—came later, inspiring many latter-day Soviet practitioners, none devoting more effort to the task than Sergei Prokofiev. Early examples such as The Buffoon (1915) and The Steel Step (1927) are cold, motor-driven exercises in conscious modernity. With The Prodigal Son (1929), he began moving toward a warmer approach, and in 1934, the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Company (later renamed the Kirov, then the Mariinsky) commissioned him to compose a ballet based on Romeo and Juliet

Prokofiev decided to make it a full-evening project on a scale to match Tchaikovsky’s, and he and the company’s director, Sergei Radlov, spent months working on the scenario, including, at one point, attempting to give it a happy ending. “In the

last act, Romeo comes a minute too soon, finds Juliet alive, and everything ends well,” Prokofiev wrote. “The reasons for this particular bit of barbarism were purely choreographic: live people can dance, but the dying can hardly be expected to dance in bed.”

The project’s path to fruition was fraught. Newly installed company management at the Kirov had doubts about Shakespeare as a ballet and withdrew from the project. Prokofiev then struck a deal to have it staged by Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre and completed the score in five months’ worth of inspired effort ending in September 1935, only to have the Bolshoi directors also dismiss it as “unsuitable for dancing.”

Undaunted (and in the hope of having a calling card to rekindle interest in the full ballet), Prokofiev arranged from it a set of ten piano transcriptions and two orchestral suites (a third followed in 1946). These were warmly received, leading to a partially successful staging of the complete work in 1938 in Brno, Czechoslovakia. A year later, the Kirov agreed to mount the first production within the Soviet Union, but the saga was not over. The Kirov’s star choreographer, Leonid Lavrovsky, visited Prokofiev, listened as the composer played through the entire score at the piano, and immensely liked what he heard but suggested changes—which Prokofiev, at first, flatly refused to consider. Then the company’s dancers and musicians, accustomed to virtually

plotless divertissements set to loud, unsophisticated music, rebelled. Two weeks before the scheduled premiere, they met and voted to cancel the production “to avoid a scandal,” in their words.

Despite these and further complications, the production’s debut on January 11, 1940, was a triumph, with the music instantly hailed as a masterpiece. As Lavrovsky described it,

Prokofiev developed and elaborated the principles of symphonism in ballet music. He was one of the first Soviet composers to bring to the ballet stage genuine human emotions and full-blooded musical images. The boldness of his musical treatment, the clear-cut characterizations, the diversity and intricacy of the rhythms, the unorthodoxy of the harmonies—all these elements serve to turn the performance into a dramatic entity.

Each of the three individual suites Prokofiev compiled while the full ballet was in limbo; he cherry-picked movements from the full ballet score, with concert logic taking precedence over dramatic sense. Gimeno’s personal selections from all three suites reestablish the narrative through line and emotional power of the magnificent full score.

prestigious Chandos label—complementing international touring engagements in the U.S., Europe, Israel, and Asia, the TSO is a musical ambassador for Canada and remains synonymous with musical versatility, growth, and artistic distinction.

Gustavo Gimeno Music Director

One of Canada’s most respected arts organizations, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), has played a vital role in the city’s cultural life for 100 years. Music Director Gustavo Gimeno brings an expansive artistic vision, intellectual curiosity, and a sense of adventure to programming the ninety-three-musician Orchestra. Through centennial commissions from emerging composers, marquee events, and an incredible lineup of world-renowned guest artists this season, the TSO continues to celebrate a century of music-making, paying homage to the Orchestra’s illustrious past while ushering in a dynamic future.

The TSO is committed to serving local and national communities through vibrant performances, extensive educational activities, and community access and wellness initiatives intended to reach more age groups, people with different abilities, and diverse communities in Toronto. Among these events are open houses and free concerts at the TSO’s home, Roy Thomson Hall; Relaxed Performances, designed to be more welcoming for neurodiverse patrons; and a partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis patients through musical storytelling and composition.

With a notable recording history—including, most recently, five acclaimed recordings on the

Gustavo Gimeno’s tenure as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra began in the 2020–21 season. He has also held the position of music director with Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL) since 2015 and will assume it in 2025–26 with Teatro Real, Madrid, where he is currently music director designate.

In the 2022–23 season, continuing their 100th anniversary, Gimeno and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra celebrate with major symphonic works, including Bruckner’s Symphony no. 4, Prokofiev’s Suite from Romeo and Juliet, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade. They also share the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, and Jean-Guihen Queyras, among other soloists. In addition, in the winter of 2023, the Orchestra embarks on its first tour with Gimeno, including a return visit to New York’s Carnegie Hall, their annual orchestra exchange with Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the TSO’s debut at Chicago’s Symphony Center.

With Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Gimeno explores repertoire such as Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, Mahler’s Symphony no. 6 (Tragic), Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5. In 2022–23, he tours with the OPL to Switzerland, Austria, and Hungary, and together they tour South Korea for the first time.

This season, Gimeno and the TSO will record for Harmonia Mundi Messiaen’s

Turangalîla-symphonie with pianist Marc-André Hamelin and ondes martenot player Nathalie Forget. This builds on Gimeno’s new relationship with the HM label (since April 2022), which commenced with a recording of Rossini’s Stabat mater, featuring OPL with Maria Agresta (soprano), Daniela Barcellona (mezzo-soprano), René Barbera (tenor), Carlo Lepore (bass), and the Wiener Singverein. In August 2022, the OPL’s second album for HM was devoted to two ballets by Stravinsky (The Firebird and Apollon musagète).

Gimeno and OPL also have an extensive discography with Pentatone. Releases include Francisco Coll’s Violin Concerto with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 1, Bruckner’s Symphony no. 1, Ravel’s complete ballet music to Daphnis et Chloé, Mahler’s Symphony no. 4, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, and César Franck’s Symphony in D minor.

As an opera conductor, he is invited for major titles at great houses such as the Liceu Opera Barcelona, Opernhaus Zürich, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, and Teatro Real, Madrid. He is also much sought-after as a symphonic guest conductor worldwide: debuts in 2022–23 include Staatskapelle Berlin and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Gimeno also regularly appears at the Concertgebouworkest, and touring projects have included concerts as far afield as Japan and Taiwan.

María Dueñas Violin

Spanish violinist María Dueñas delights audiences with the breathtaking array of colors she draws from her instrument. Her technical prowess, artistic maturity, and bold interpretations have inspired rave reviews, captivated competition juries, and secured invitations to appear with many of the world’s leading orchestras and

conductors. She is hailed for the “freedom and joyous individuality” of her playing, and her rising-star status was described as “seemingly unstoppable” after she won a whole series of international violin competitions. Not least among these was her live-streamed run to victory at the 2021 Menuhin Violin Competition, where she won not only the first prize and audience prize but also a global online following and the loan of a golden-period Stradivarius from Jonathan Moulds’s private collection.

Dueñas signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon in September 2022 and will open her DG discography with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Recorded in Vienna with the Wiener Symphoniker and Manfred Honeck and featuring the violinist’s own cadenzas, the debut album will be released in May 2023. A multi-faceted musician, Dueñas became fond of composing after she started writing cadenzas for Mozart’s violin concertos. A solo piano piece, Farewell, was awarded a prize in the 2016 Von fremden Ländern und Menschen Competition for Young Composers. Recorded by Evgeny Sinaiski, it was transformed into a music video and filmed during the pandemic.

A dedicated chamber musician, Dueñas has performed with baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Itamar Golan, among other artists. She has also premiered several works written for and dedicated to her by the late Catalan composer Jordi Cervelló, including the Milstein Caprice.

Born in Granada in 2002, María Dueñas fell in love with classical music thanks to the recordings her parents constantly played at home and the concerts she attended in her native city. She started playing violin at six and enrolled at Granada’s Conservatory a year later. In 2014 Dueñas won a scholarship from Juventudes

Musicales in Madrid to study abroad and moved to Dresden to attend the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music. There she was soon spotted by violinist Wolfgang Hentrich and conductor Marek Janowsky, at whose invitation she would later make her debut as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony.

In 2016 she and her family moved again, this time to Austria to enable her to study with the renowned violin teacher Boris Kuschnir, on the recommendation of her mentor Vladimir Spivakov, at the private Music and Arts University of Vienna and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Her competition victories began with the 2017 Zhuhai International Mozart Competition

and the 2018 Vladimir Spivakov International Violin Competition. In addition to her success in the Menuhin Competition, 2021 saw her win first prize at the Getting to Carnegie Competition, the grand prize at the Viktor Tretyakov International Violin Competition, and the career-advancement prize at the Rheingau Music Festival. She was also named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2021–23.
