a note from the chair and the president Happy New Year and welcome to Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Negaunee Music Institute. We are eager to make sure your 2022 is filled with rich, live musical experiences. We happily find Riccardo Muti, the CSO’s Zell Music Director, back in Chicago to begin the year with three weeks of performances in Orchestra Hall as well as two community concerts at Chodl Auditorium at Morton East High School in Cicero and Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. In Muti’s words, these concerts embody the CSOA’s commitment to “focusing on discovering beauty and culture again,” and are an “invitation for all Chicagoans to share in the joy, power, and harmony of music. The first of these three programs in January is part of Muti’s ongoing survey of Beethoven’s symphonies with the CSO, with performances of the Fifth and Eighth symphonies in addition to his Coriolan Overture. Next, Muti and the CSO perform suites from Tchaikovsky’s ballets Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty, Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Emperor Waltz, and the Overture to Donna Diana by Reznicek. A baroque program with the first suite from Handel’s Water Music and three concertos by Vivaldi, featuring CSO musicians as soloists, are Muti’s last concerts before he returns in late February. Next, Marin Alsop leads the Orchestra in works by Barber and Elgar and Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto performed by Lukáš Vondráček. The CSO at the Movies series also continues with the classic film Casablanca conducted by Richard Kaufman. Symphony Center Presents greatly expands its offerings in the new year beginning with SCP Piano series performances by Igor Levit, Jan Lisiecki, and Daniil Trifonov, while the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble with Branford Marsalis explores the intersection of jazz and classical music in a special concert. The SCP Jazz series presents the double bill of Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science and Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Hero Trio. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, conducted by Rossen Milanov, presents two free concerts at the South Shore Cultural Center and Symphony Center in January, and in February, the Civic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur leads the orchestra in works by Bacewicz, Janáček, and Bartók. We hope you join us often in 2022 for the broad range of incredible performances by the world’s leading musicians here at Symphony Center and beyond.

A Long-Awaited Reunion When Riccardo Muti joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on September 21 for its first rehearsal of the 2021–22 season, it was a symbolic and joyful moment marking the end of a long physical separation. The three weeks of performances that followed indicated that the artistic connection between Muti and the Orchestra was as strong as ever. Emotion, energy, and an eagerness to perform live for Chicago audiences defined this long-awaited reunion in concerts that marked a homecoming for listeners as well. The following pictures, accolades, and remarks capture a celebration that will be remembered for years to come.

In these first performances together since February 2020, Muti led the CSO in Beethoven’s stirring Eroica Symphony. The program opened with the Orchestra’s first performances of the Overture to the opera L’Amant anonyme by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the Guadeloupeborn eighteenth-century composer, violinist, and champion fencer whose music is receiving renewed attention. The program also included the Andante moderato by Florence Price, the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra—the CSO in 1933.

“ If there was a protagonist in this interpretation, it was Muti’s nextto-telekinetic rapport with the CSO musicians. It’s been just two years since orchestra and director last united to perform Eroica, in September 2019, but what a long two years it’s been. . . . Thursday’s concert collapsed that span like an accordion file.” THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE
clockwi s e f ro m to p l e f t : To mark the momentous occasion of the first concerts together since the beginning of the pandemic, on September 23, Muti opened the evening by addressing the vitality of culture. Those in attendance demonstrated their support of the CSO with warm applause and ovations.

Before beginning the concert on September 23, Riccardo Muti marked the occasion by addressing the audience. What follows is a selection of those remarks.
“Tonight, of course, is a very special occasion. . . . Because English is not my first language, I have to find the right words that can correspond to the feelings that I have and that reflect the feelings of the musicians. This is a special day, a special evening, because [it is] after nineteen or twenty months of separation and twenty months of a disaster in the world that has killed many people, killed the economy that affects the physical part of our life, killed the culture. Culture affects our soul, our mind, and the interrelationships between people. We always forget how much the lack of culture can damage a society. That’s the reason why it is very special tonight, and that’s the reason why I am playing the Eroica: because of musicians of the Chicago Symphony and the musicians around the world—and the actors, and the singers, and the composers, the painters. They have been heroic, because not only did they have to make their professions silent but also they could not communicate what is the real reason of their lives: to give you, to the public, enrichment and beauty. The world is going in a very tragic way because of the lack of culture. I’m insisting on fighting; I’ve been fighting all my life. Culture is not entertainment. You are not here tonight because you did not know how to spend your evening. You are here tonight because you need music. You need to hear live your fantastic musicians. That is the reason why we are here. We are here to give you emotions, to give you the sound of beauty, of harmony—that sound that the world is forgetting. Without music the world will become more and more savage. So, I am so happy to see all of you in this historic hall, in front of an orchestra that is more than 125 years old, that has given beauty and music and enrichment to many generations. So, I’m asking you to stay close to the Orchestra. To tell your friends, your colleagues, to come to hear the Orchestra, not just to hear the music, but to receive through music beauty, harmony, and, as Beethoven said, brotherhood. This is what I wanted to tell you.” Riccardo Muti Zell Music Director Chicago Symphony Orchestra

a note from the director of programming
Welcome back to Symphony Center! I am thrilled to welcome you back to live performances in Orchestra Hall once again during the ninety-first season of the Symphony Center Presents series. We look ahead to a bright future with this season’s concerts that illustrate the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s ongoing commitment to offering presentations of the highest quality. In September, Chicago native and jazz keyboard legend Herbie Hancock returned for a performance that opened both Symphony Center to capacity audiences and the 2021–22 SCP Jazz series. SCP presentations continued with a sold-out performance by superstar pianist Lang Lang. The remainder of our fall season includes well-known recitalists, holiday offerings, and the world-famous Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass. Our winter and spring 2022 season plans feature our hallmark mix of familiar artists as well as exciting debuts. In addition to appearances by Daniil Trifonov, Richard Goode, Sir András Schiff, Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, and Evgeny Kissin, the SCP Piano series features recital debuts by Jan Lisiecki, George Li, and Denis Kozhukhin. Our Chamber Music series includes performances by the amazing Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma trio; the Mahler Chamber Orchestra led by Mitsuko Uchida; and, in her first recital as the CSO’s new Artist-in-Residence, a unique program by violinist Hilary Hahn. The SCP Jazz series welcomes outstanding vocalists Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Cécile McLorin Salvant, as well as a two-concert residency by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and new programs by Terri Lyne Carrington, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Sean Jones, and Chicagoan Thaddeus Tukes. While I am proud of the limited, virtual concerts that we were able to offer during the ninetieth season of Symphony Center Presents, we sorely missed presenting live performances for you, our loyal patrons and subscribers, who make these presentations complete. I cannot tell you how much I look forward to seeing you in the audience, and I thank you for your continued support.

Born December 16, 1770; Bonn, Germany Died March 26, 1827; Vienna, Austria
Sonata No. 30 in E Major, Op. 109 composed 1820
Beethoven’s painful fiveyear court battle to secure custody of his nephew Karl from his brother Caspar’s dissolute widow (whom the composer disparaged as the “Queen of the Night”) finally came to an end early in 1820. He “won,” but lost the boy’s affection (Karl, half crazed from his uncle’s overbearing attention, tried, unsuccessfully, to kill himself); the case also publicly exploded the composer’s pretension that he was of noble blood. Beethoven was further troubled by deteriorating health and a certain financial distress (he needed a loan from his brother Johann, a prosperous apothecary in Vienna, to tide him over that difficult time), so it is not surprising that he composed little during that period. With the resolution of his custody suit, however, he returned to creative work with a set of three piano sonatas and began anew the titanic struggle to embody his musical thoughts in transcendent tones. In no apparent hurry to dispel the rumors in gossipy Vienna that he was “written out,” he produced just one work in 1820, the Sonata in E major, op. 109. The A-flat sonata was dated on Christmas Day, 1821, and his last piano sonata, the op. 111 in C minor, appeared just three weeks later. It was in his three last sonatas that Beethoven realized
the essential technique—the complete fusion of sonata, variation, and fugue—that fueled the soaring masterpieces of his final period. Beethoven composed the op. 109 sonata between May and September 1820 in the Austrian village of Mödling, south of Vienna, where he had rusticated for the two previous summers (though he had to find new lodgings that year since his landlord of 1819 refused to rent to him again because of his “noisy disturbances”). Those country residencies were times of spiritual and creative retreat for Beethoven, when, according to his amanuensis and biographer, Anton Schindler, he was “rapt away from the world.” Sketches for the sonata appear among those for the Credo and the Benedictus of the Missa solemnis, an appropriate balance of the personal and public manifestations of the visions he was trying to embody in the creations of his last years.

COMMENTS
The sonata was published by the Berlin house of Schlesinger in November 1821 with a dedication to Maximiliane Brentano, the daughter of Franz Brentano (a Frankfurt merchant who acted as the composer’s agent with the publisher Simrock) and Antonie Brentano (whom Maynard Solomon in his study of Beethoven identified as the “Immortal Beloved”). “A dedication!!!,” Beethoven wrote to Maximiliane on December 6. Well, this is not one of those dedications that are used and abused by thousands of people. It is the spirit that unites the noble and finer people of this earth and which time can never destroy. It is this spirit that now speaks to you and calls you to mind, and likewise your beloved parents—your most excellent and gifted mother, your father imbued with so many truly good and noble qualities and ever mindful of the welfare of his children. . . . The memory of a noble family can never fade in my heart. May you sometimes think of me with a feeling of kindness. My most heartfelt wishes. May heaven bless your life and the lives of all of you forever.
T
he dominant emotional state of the outer movements of the E major sonata is optimism and joy (perhaps a reflection of Beethoven’s gratitude over the court decision regarding Karl), which is thrown into relief by the stormy central Prestissimo. The opening movement is the epitome of Beethoven’s distillation of the sonata principle in his late works: the two themes (the first—fast, flowing, diatonic, arpeggiated; the second—slow, ruminative, chromatic, chordal) are given in bare, economical juxtaposition, without introduction or transition. The development section is a seamless, superbly directed elaboration of the main theme that reaches its peak the moment the recapitulation begins. The second subject returns before the movement ends with a luminous coda built on the principal theme. The fiery Prestissimo, which serves as the sonata’s scherzo and its emotional foil, is also in sonata form, though, unlike the opening movement, its themes are little contrasted with each other. The finale, twice the length of the first two movements combined, is an expansive set of six variations founded upon the hymnlike two-part theme presented at the outset. An ethereal restatement of the theme, virtually a benediction to the entire work, brings the sonata to a sublime close.

fred hersch
Born October 21, 1955; Cincinnati, Ohio
Variations on a Folk Song composed 2021 first per fo r m a n ce January 13, 2022; at Carnegie Hall in New York by Igor Levit
Fred Hersch has lived a brilliant and multifaceted musical life with a medical miracle at its heart. Hersch, born in Cincinnati in 1955, showed musical gifts from infancy. In 2017, he told NPR interviewer Terry Gross, “The family legend has it that when I was about three or four, I got up on the piano and picked out the theme from The Huckleberry Hound Show.” His parents started him with piano lessons when he was four years old, and when he entered the third grade, they added private instruction in theory and composition—“By the time I was out of elementary school, I had a toolkit that probably a college freshman or sophomore at a conservatory would have.” Hersch’s training as a youngster had been largely in traditional classical styles, but he discovered jazz in high school and became passionate about it when he entered Grinnell College in Iowa. On a visit home to Cincinnati, he haunted the city’s jazz clubs and record shops and gigged around town until he went to Boston for more intensive training at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with pianist and composer Jaki Byard, a former member of the bands of Maynard Ferguson, Charles Mingus, and other jazz stars. After graduating with honors in 1977, Hersch went to New York, where he immediately began establishing a reputation as a pianist; he made his first recordings in 1979, with Art Farmer and Billy Harper. From 1980 to 1986, Hersch taught at the New England Conservatory while
performing steadily; recording as a sideman with such luminaries as Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, and Eddie Daniels; and releasing his own albums starting in 1986. The year 1993 was a pivotal time for Hersch, both personally and professionally. He came out as gay that year, one of the first prominent jazz artists to do so, and revealed that he had been treated for AIDS since 1984. Significantly, he made the announcement during a benefit performance for AIDS Volunteers in Cincinnati, the first of his tireless efforts to support gay rights and AIDS research and education through advocacy that has included performances, recordings, and addresses at international medical conferences. His life for the next fifteen years confirmed the efficacy of his AIDS treatment as his performing and recording careers continued and he gave more time to composing. During those years, his recordings earned three Grammy Award nominations, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Composition, and in 2006 he became the first artist in the seventy-five-year history of New York’s legendary Village Vanguard to play a weeklong engagement as a solo pianist. In 2008, after dealing with various health issues and drugs, Hersch was admitted to St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, where his condition was diagnosed as life-threatening sepsis. He was placed in a medically induced coma for almost two months. The treatment saved his life, but left him unable to walk, talk, eat, or lift an arm. He made a slow but remarkable recovery, and shared his experiences in the multimedia stage piece My Coma Dreams (2011) and his memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz (2018), which was included on many best-books-of-the-year lists

and received the Book on Jazz of the Year Award from the Jazz Journalists Association. Hersch released his first post-coma recording with a 2009 CD of music by Antônio Carlos Jobim, and he has since added to it some twenty more recordings, which have earned a dozen more Grammy nominations and pianist-of-the-year awards from DownBeat, the Jazz Journalists Association, and the French magazine Jazz. As a composer, Hersch has received fellowships and grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, Chamber Music America, and National Endowment for the Arts; numerous commissions; and nine residencies at the MacDowell Colony. In addition to the New England Conservatory, Hersch has taught at Rutgers University, Juilliard, Western Michigan University, Manhattan School of Music, and the New School in New York City, and conducted a professional training workshop for Young Musicians at the Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall. Fred Hersch’s life work has been recognized with honorary doctorates from Grinnell College and Northern Kentucky University as well as the Prix Honorem de Jazz from L’Acádemie Charles Cros, the French organization that recognizes excellence in recording.
Fred Hersch on Variations on a Folk Song
I
first met Igor Levit in the fall of 2018 when he attended a performance of mine with my trio at New York’s Village Vanguard. He was in town for a few days, and we ended up at my place downtown spending a great afternoon together talking about music and books and playing for each other. Thus began an important
friendship and mutual admiration that has grown steadily over these few years. He has been performing some of my shorter concert works and transcriptions as encores since then, and I wrote a short a piece for him entitled Trees. I offered to write Igor a more substantial work, and the result is Variations on a Folk Song. I knew I wanted to write a set of variations—as a jazz pianist, essentially what I do is play variations on themes in real time. It took a while to settle on the American folk song “Shenandoah,” which I learned as a child, and which and has much emotional resonance for me; it was sung by settlers moving to the American West and was also a popular sea shanty. Most importantly, it has a well-known and memorable melody that provides numerous possibilities for variations. In this set, there are twenty variations in a wide variety of approaches that play off both the melody and the harmony. This piece was composed for Igor Levit and is dedicated to the memory of Stuart K. Nelson (1931–2021), who, with his wife Linda, commissioned more than a hundred pieces by living composers.

Prelude from Tristan and Isolde (Transcribed by Zoltán Kocsis) composed 1854–59 a rra n ged 1978
Wagner provided a synopsis of the emotional progression of Tristan and Isolde, whose voluptuous prose is a not only a sketch of the events of the story, but also a key to understanding the surging sea of passion on which the entire world of this opera floats: A primitive old love poem, which, far from having become extinct, is constantly fashioning itself anew, and has been adopted by every European language of the Middle Ages, tells of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan, the faithful vassal, woos for his king her for whom he dares not avow his own love, Isolde. Isolde, powerless than to do otherwise than obey the wooer, follows him as bride to his lord. Jealous of this infringement of her rights, the Goddess of Love takes her revenge. As the result of a happy mistake, she allows the couple to taste of the love potion which, in accordance with the custom of the times, and by way of precaution, the mother had prepared for the husband who should marry her daughter from political motives, and which, by the burning desire
which suddenly inflames them after tasting it, opens their eyes to the truth and leads to the avowal that for the future they belong only to each other. Henceforth, there is no end to the longings, the demands, the joys, and woes of love. The world, power, fame, splendor, honor, knighthood, fidelity, friendship—all are dissipated like an empty dream. One thing only remains: longing, longing, insatiable longing, forever springing up anew, pining, and thirsting. Death, which means passing away, perishing, never awakening, their only deliverance. . . . Powerless, the heart sinks back to languish in longing, in longing

without attaining; for each attainment only begets new longing, until in the last stage of weariness the foreboding of the highest joy of dying, of no longer existing, of the last escape into that wonderful kingdom from which we are furthest off when we are most strenuously striving to enter therein. Shall we call it death? Or is it the hidden wonder-world from out of which an ivy and vine, entwined with each other, grew up upon Tristan’s and Isolde’s grave, as the legend tells us? The sense of longing is generated right at the beginning of the opera. Its Prelude is built, in the composer’s words, from “one long
series of linked phrases,” each of which is left hanging, unresolved, in silence. Of the remainder of the Prelude, Wagner wrote, it moves from “the first timidest lament of inappeasable longing, the tenderest shudder, to the most terrible outpouring of an avowal of hopeless love, traversing all phases of the vain struggle against the inner ardor until this, sinking back upon itself, seems to be extinguished in death.” The Prelude is constructed as a long arch of sound, beginning faintly, and building to a huge climax near its center before dying away to silence. The Hungarian pianist, composer, and conductor Zoltán Kocsis (1952–2016) arranged the Prelude and Liebestod for solo piano in 1978.

Piano Sonata in B Minor composed 1852–53
Franz Liszt was one of the most brilliant and provocative figures in music history. As a pianist, conductor, composer, teacher, writer, and personality—for with Liszt, being a colorful personality was itself a profession—his immediate influence upon European music can hardly be exaggerated. His life was a veritable pagan wilderness wherein flourished luxuriant legends of love affairs, natural children, encounters with great figures of the period, and hairbreadth escapes from a variety of romantic murders. Unlike Wagner and Berlioz, Liszt never wrote the story of his life, for, as he casually remarked, he was too busy living it.
If it were not for the fact that Liszt’s life had been so thoroughly documented by his contemporaries, we might think that the preceding description by Abraham Veinus was based on some profligate fictional character out of E.T.A. Hoffmann. Not so. By all accounts, Liszt led the most sensational life ever granted to a musician. In his youth and early manhood, he received the sort of wild and unbuttoned adulation that today is seen only at the appearances of a select handful of rock stars. He was the first musical artist in history with enough nerve to keep an entire program to himself rather than providing the grab-bag of orchestral, vocal, and instrumental pieces scattered across an evening’s entertainment that was the typical early nineteenth-century concert. He dubbed those solo concerts “musical

soliloquies” at first, and later called them by the now-familiar term, “recitals.” (“How can one recite at the piano? Preposterous!” fumed one British writer.) By 1848, Liszt had made his fortune, secured his fame, and decided that he had been touring long enough, so he gave up performing, appearing in public during the last four decades of his life only for an occasional benefit concert. Amid the variegated patchwork of duchies, kingdoms, and city-states that constituted pre-Bismarck Germany, he chose to settle in the small but sophisticated city of Weimar, where Sebastian Bach held a job early in his career. Once installed at Weimar, Liszt took over the musical establishment there and elevated it into one of the most important centers of European artistic culture. He stirred up interest in such neglected composers as Schubert and encouraged such younger ones as Saint-Saëns, Wagner, and Grieg by performing their works. He also gave much of his energy to his own original compositions and created many of the pieces for which he is known today—the symphonies, piano concertos, symphonic poems, and choral works. Liszt had composed before he moved to Weimar, of course—his total output numbers between 1,400 and 1,500 separate works—but the early pieces were mainly piano solos for use at his own recitals. His later works are not only indispensable components of the romantic musical era in their own right, but also an important influence on other composers in their form, harmony, and poetic content. As if composing, conducting, and performing were insufficient, Liszt was also one of the most sought-after piano teachers of the nineteenth century. He was popular with students not just because he possessed an awesome technique that was (and remains) the model of every serious pianist. Liszt was also a direct link to that nearly deified figure, the glorious Beethoven, who had, so the story went, actually kissed the young prodigy on the forehead with his own lips. Furthermore, Liszt was a pupil of Carl Czerny, the most eminent student of Beethoven. To
make this already unassailable combination of technique and tradition absolutely irresistible, Liszt brought to it an all-encompassing view of man and his world that enabled the mere tones of the piano to surpass themselves and open unspeakable realms of transcendent delight. One friend once remarked about the composer’s wide variety of interests, “One could never know in which mental stall Liszt would find his next hobby horse.” He was a truly remarkable man, one of the most important figures in terms of his cumulative influence on the art in all of nineteenth-century music.

n 1852–53, Liszt composed his revolutionary B minor piano sonata. The procedure on which he built this sonata (as well as his Second Piano Concerto and many of his orchestral tone poems) is called “thematic transformation,” or, to use the rather more jolly phrase of William Foster Apthorp, “The Life and Adventures of a Melody.” Never bothered that he was ignoring the classical models of form, Liszt concocted his own new structures around this transformation process. (“Music is never stationary,” he pronounced. “Successive forms and styles can only be like so many resting places—like tents pitched and taken down again on the road to the Ideal.”) Basically, the “thematic transformation” process consists of inventing a theme that can be used to create a wide variety of moods, tempos, harmonies, and rhythms to suggest whatever emotional states are required by the different sections of the piece. It is not unlike a single actor changing costumes to play different characters in the same production—recognizably the same at the core, but different on the surface for each scene. There are at least four such scenes played continuously in Liszt’s Piano Sonata, which correspond roughly to first movement, slow movement, finale, and coda. The principal theme, presented after seven measures of slow introduction, comprises two motivic components: a leaping exclamation followed by a dramatic triplet figure and an ominous quick-note gesture in the low register. It is from these two pregnant fragments that the magnificent and thoroughly JANUARY–FEBRUARY 2022 33

integrated structure of this sonata is built. The only important melodic contrast is provided by a bold, striding theme introduced above repeated chords. Of the sonata, one of the grandest and most influential of all nineteenth-century keyboard compositions, Richard Wagner told Liszt, “It is beautiful beyond all expression—great, gracious, profound, noble, sublime like yourself. I have been moved to the depths of my being. Many thanks for this pleasure vouchsafed to me.”

profiles Igor Levit Piano With an alert and critical mind, Igor Levit places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. He was Musical America’s 2020 Recording Artist of the Year and the recipient of the 2018 Gilmore Artist Award. In November 2020, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. As a recitalist, Levit regularly performs at the world’s most renowned concert halls and festivals. He is regular soloist with the world’s leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Levit’s upcoming schedule includes concerts in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Vienna, and Tokyo. In 2022, Igor Levit performs the world premiere of a new piano concerto written for him by William Bolcom as well as a solo piece written for him by jazz pianist Fred Hersch, Variations on a Folk Song. In the spring of 2021, the Lucerne Festival announced a multi-year collaboration for a new piano festival to be curated by Levit starting in 2023. Levit is an exclusive recording artist for Sony Classical, and his 2019 acclaimed first recording of Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas was awarded the Gramophone Artist of the Year Award as well as the Opus Klassik in the autumn of 2020. His next album, Encounter, followed in September 2020. The program includes rarely played arrangements of music by Bach and

Brahms by Ferruccio Busoni and Max Reger as well as Palais de Mari, Morton Feldman’s final work for piano. Levit’s next release is a double album featuring Shostakovich’s Twentyfour Preludes and Fugues, op. 87, and Ronald Stevenson’s Passacaglia on DSCH. Born in Nizhni Novgorod, Russia, Igor Levit moved to Germany with his family at the age of eight. He completed his piano studies in Hanover with the highest score in the history of the institute. Levit was the youngest participant in the 2005 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, where he won silver, the special prize for chamber music, the audience prize, and the special prize for the best performance of contemporary pieces. In the spring of 2019, he was appointed professor of piano at his alma mater, the University of Music, Theater, and Media Hanover. For his political commitment, Igor Levit has been awarded the Fifth International Beethoven Prize in 2019 followed by the award of the “Statue B” of the International Auschwitz Committee in January 2020. His 53 Twitterstreamed live house concerts during the lockdown in the spring of 2020 garnered a worldwide audience, offering a sense of community and hope in a time of isolation and desperation. In October of 2020, Levit was recognized with the Oder of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In spring of 2021, Hanser published Levit’s first book, House Concert, coauthored by Florian Zinnecker. In Berlin, where he makes his home, Igor Levit plays on a Steinway D Grand Piano kindly given to him by the Trustees of Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells. In addition to being an exclusive recording artist of Sony Classical, Igor Levit is under exclusive worldwide management by Classic Concerts Management GmbH with Kristin Schuster.
