a note from the chair and the president Happy New Year and welcome to Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Symphony Center Presents, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and Negaunee Music Institute. We are eager to make sure your 2022 is filled with rich, live musical experiences. We happily find Riccardo Muti, the CSO’s Zell Music Director, back in Chicago to begin the year with three weeks of performances in Orchestra Hall as well as two community concerts at Chodl Auditorium at Morton East High School in Cicero and Apostolic Church of God in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. In Muti’s words, these concerts embody the CSOA’s commitment to “focusing on discovering beauty and culture again,” and are an “invitation for all Chicagoans to share in the joy, power, and harmony of music. The first of these three programs in January is part of Muti’s ongoing survey of Beethoven’s symphonies with the CSO, with performances of the Fifth and Eighth symphonies in addition to his Coriolan Overture. Next, Muti and the CSO perform suites from Tchaikovsky’s ballets Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty, Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Emperor Waltz, and the Overture to Donna Diana by Reznicek. A baroque program with the first suite from Handel’s Water Music and three concertos by Vivaldi, featuring CSO musicians as soloists, are Muti’s last concerts before he returns in late February. Next, Marin Alsop leads the Orchestra in works by Barber and Elgar and Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto performed by Lukáš Vondráček. The CSO at the Movies series also continues with the classic film Casablanca conducted by Richard Kaufman. Symphony Center Presents greatly expands its offerings in the new year beginning with SCP Piano series performances by Igor Levit, Jan Lisiecki, and Daniil Trifonov, while the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble with Branford Marsalis explores the intersection of jazz and classical music in a special concert. The SCP Jazz series presents the double bill of Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science and Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Hero Trio. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago, conducted by Rossen Milanov, presents two free concerts at the South Shore Cultural Center and Symphony Center in January, and in February, the Civic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Ken-David Masur leads the orchestra in works by Bacewicz, Janáček, and Bartók. A Long-Awaited Reunion When Riccardo Muti joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on September 21 for its first rehearsal of the 2021–22 season, it was a symbolic and joyful moment marking the end of a long physical separation. The three weeks of performances that followed indicated that the artistic connection between Muti and the Orchestra was as strong as ever. Emotion, energy, and an eagerness to perform live for Chicago audiences defined this long-awaited reunion in concerts that marked a homecoming for listeners as well. The following pictures, accolades, and remarks capture a celebration that will be remembered for years to come.

CONCERT

In these first performances together since February 2020, Muti led the CSO in Beethoven’s stirring Eroica Symphony. The program opened with the Orchestra’s first performances of the Overture to the opera L’Amant anonyme by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the Guadeloupeborn eighteenth-century composer, violinist, and champion fencer whose music is receiving renewed attention. The program also included the Andante moderato by Florence Price, the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major American orchestra—the CSO in 1933.

Those in attendance demonstrated their support of the CSO with warm applause and ovations.

Before beginning the concert on September 23, Riccardo Muti marked the occasion by addressing the audience. What follows is a selection of those remarks.

“Tonight, of course, is a very special occasion. . . . Because English is not my first language, I have to find the right words that can correspond to the feelings that I have and that reflect the feelings of the musicians. This is a special day, a special evening, because [it is] after nineteen or twenty months of separation and twenty months of a disaster in the world that has killed many people, killed the economy that affects the physical part of our life, killed the culture. Culture affects our soul, our mind, and the interrelationships between people. We always forget how much the lack of culture can damage a society. That’s the reason why it is very special tonight, and that’s the reason why I am playing the Eroica: because of musicians of the Chicago Symphony and the musicians around the world—and the actors, and the singers, and the composers, the painters. They have been heroic, because not only did they have to make their professions silent but also they could not communicate what is the real reason of their lives: to give you, to the public, enrichment and beauty. The world is going in a very tragic way because of the lack of culture. I’m insisting on fighting; I’ve been fighting all my life. Culture is not entertainment. You are not here tonight because you did not know how to spend your evening. You are here tonight because you need music. You need to hear live your fantastic musicians. That is the reason why we are here. We are here to give you emotions, to give you the sound of beauty, of harmony—that sound that the world is forgetting. Without music the world will become more and more savage. So, I am so happy to see all of you in this historic hall, in front of an orchestra that is more than 125 years old, that has given beauty and music and enrichment to many generations. So, I’m asking you to stay close to the Orchestra. To tell your friends, your colleagues, to come to hear the Orchestra, not just to hear the music, but to receive through music beauty, harmony, and, as Beethoven said, brotherhood. The third week of concerts opened with Missy Mazzoli’s These Words In Us,

a meditation on her father’s experiences as a soldier in Vietnam inspired by a poem by James Tate. While Mazzoli served as Mead Composer-inResidence (July 2018–June 2021), circumstances made these concerts the first realized orchestral performances of her music. Also on the program were Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 6 in B minor, op. 74, known as the Pathétique.

For more than 100 years, young people have explored the wonder of classical music through the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s concerts for children. Since last season, they have taken on an additional form that is virtually accessible—CSO for Kids on CSOtv. Produced in partnership with Chicago Children’s Theatre, this series of educational videos uses classical music to bring contemporary children’s literature to life. Welcome back to Symphony Center! I am thrilled to welcome you back to live performances in Orchestra Hall once again during the ninety-first season of the Symphony Center Presents series. We look ahead to a bright future with this season’s concerts that illustrate the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association’s ongoing commitment to offering presentations of the highest quality. Our winter and spring 2022 season plans feature our hallmark mix of familiar artists as well as exciting debuts. In addition to appearances by Daniil Trifonov, Richard Goode, Sir András Schiff, Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, and Evgeny Kissin, the SCP Piano series features recital debuts by Jan Lisiecki, George Li, and Denis Kozhukhin. Our Chamber Music series includes performances by the amazing Emanuel Ax, Leonidas Kavakos, and Yo-Yo Ma trio; the Mahler Chamber Orchestra led by Mitsuko Uchida; and, in her first recital as the CSO’s new Artist-in-Residence, a unique program by violinist Hilary Hahn. The SCP Jazz series welcomes outstanding vocalists Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Cécile McLorin Salvant, as well as a two-concert residency by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and new programs by Terri Lyne Carrington, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Sean Jones, and Chicagoan Thaddeus Tukes. While I am proud of the limited, virtual concerts that we were able to offer during the ninetieth season of Symphony Center Presents, we sorely missed presenting live performances for you, our loyal patrons and subscribers, who make these presentations complete. Rossini was born less than three months after the death of Mozart (“He was the wonder of my youth,” Rossini later wrote, “the despair of my maturity, and he is the consolation of my old age.”), was a professional contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert (as well as the young Mendelssohn and Berlioz), and lived into the era of Wagner and Brahms. But he retired in 1830, at the height of his career, leaving behind the world of opera where he had reigned since 1812. The opening sentence of the late Chicago scholar Philip Gossett’s article in The New Grove offers a healthy corrective: “No composer in the first half of the nineteenth century enjoyed the measure of prestige, wealth, popular acclaim, or artistic influence that belonged to Rossini.” Legend has long insisted that Rossini wrote The Barber of Seville at lightning speed—nine

days according to one account—and although he did no doubt compose quickly, the idea of making an opera of the first play in Beaumarchais’s Figaro trilogy had long been on his mind. The opera was not originally called The Barber of Seville—it was premiered, to a disastrous audience reception in 1816, as Almaviva. And the now-famous overture was borrowed from Aureliano in Palmira, an opera written three years earlier and tacked on to the Almaviva score, since Rossini always saved composing an overture till the very last moment and apparently had neither time nor inclination to write something new. Regardless, it is one of Rossini’s most famous—and finest—creations, from its requisite slow introduction, with its jarring shifts of light and dark, to the joyously fast music and wit of its main section. It has had many admirers, from Beethoven to Verdi, and it long ago became so popular that it will always be identified with the Rossini comedy for which it was never intended. Phillip Huscher

Carmen Jazz Suite on Themes by Bizet, written for the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and saxophonist Branford Marsalis, is a contemporary take on Bizet’s classic 1875 opera, Carmen. This version of the timeless story centers Carmen’s voice, as portrayed by Marsalis. The music uplifts the protagonist’s freedom, love, and fearlessness, celebrating an imagined world in which Carmen lives and wins. The suite begins with “Carmen’s Freedom.” Carmen is free and unbound. Following an improvised introduction by Marsalis, the cellos enter with Bizet’s iconic ostinato from “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle,” which is based on the Cuban rhythm, habanera. In honor of the historical music of Congo Square of New Orleans— Branford Marsalis’s hometown, as well as my own—the string section layers entrances with figures based on various rhythmic cells derived from African musical cultures (West Africa, often by way of Haiti and Cuba) that would have been heard at Congo Square—the habanera, tresillo (or bamboula), cinquillo, and a 3–2 clave. Bizet’s melody is played by Marsalis with responses from the orchestra and continues into an improvisation on the themes.

“Carmen’s Loves” begins with a 2–3 clave in the percussion. Carmen is still free and unbound and begins to contemplate her loves. While Marsalis plays Carmen’s seguidilla melody, “Près des remparts de Séville,” the clarinet and oboe later state Bizet’s theme of danger before the bassoon enters with a theme from Don José’s “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée.” Later in this section, the horn and trumpet alternate playing the theme from Escamillo’s toreador song, “Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre,” supported by the string-section figures from the initial habanera theme. Carmen’s two loves serve as secondary themes, while her seguidilla melody remains the primary theme. “Carmen’s Omen of Death” is based on the third-act card scene in which Carmen sings of her impending fate. This theme is a key part of the story, and here it is expanded upon with improvisation. There is a feeling of defiance tinged with resignation. Yet this piece’s final section offers a twist on the original story. “Carmen Defeats Death” is based on themes from act 4, from the duet between Don José and Carmen, “C’est toi? C’est moi!” Particularly, inspiration comes from Carmen’s statement, “Jamais Carmen ne cédera! Libre elle est née, et libre elle mourra!” (I won’t give in, this is goodbye! Free I was born, and free I shall die!) In this version, however, Carmen escapes her expected fate. She lives, and is heard rising toward freedom. Courtney Bryan

With the works of Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados during the decades around the turn of the twentieth century, Spanish music emerged as an integral part of the international cultural scene. In the years before the First World War, Albéniz and Granados were joined in creating a national musical style by Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Turina, who, like their older colleagues, went to Paris both to study the traditional ways of music-making and to be inspired by the exciting modernities of Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and the other important composers then making that city the most vibrant center of art and culture in Europe. Turina was especially attracted to formal academic study, and he enrolled at the Schola Cantorum as a pupil of the eminent pedagogue and composer Vincent d’Indy. Under d’Indy’s tutelage, he turned out his first published work, the String Quintet in G minor, the performance of which was to have a profound effect on Turina’s later music and philosophy. Albéniz, whom Turina had not previously met, was at the premiere of the quintet in 1907 with Falla, and after the performance, Albéniz invited his younger compatriots to join him for a drink and some serious conversation at a café in the Rue Royale. Recalling the meeting with Albéniz four years later, Turina wrote, [That evening,] I realized that music should be an art, and not a diversion for the frivolity

of women and the dissipation of men. We were three Spaniards gathered together in that corner of Paris, and it was our duty to fight bravely for the national music of our country. Turina returned to Spain in 1914, and soon came to be regarded as one of the leading musical figures of his country. Though he was best known during his lifetime for his compositions, he also gained fame as a pianist and chamber music player with the Quinteto de Madrid, as a professor at the Madrid Conservatory, as director of the performances of the Ballets Russes in Spain, as a music critic, and as a member of the Spanish Academy of Arts. Following Albéniz’s advice, he sought inspiration for many of his compositions in indigenous songs and dances, and created such works in the national idiom as La procesión del Rocio, Danzas andaluzas, La oración del torero, Sinfonía sevillana, and Canto a Sevilla. Turina’s La oración del torero (The Bullfighter’s Prayer) was originally composed for a quartet of lutes, and later transcribed by the composer for string quartet or string orchestra. Turina provided no description of the work beyond its title, though the music’s contrasting fast and slow sections seem to juxtapose evocations of the public brilliance of the bullring and the introspection of the torero. With its alternation of scintillating Andalusian dance rhythms and misty impressionism, the work is also a meeting of the Spanish and French strains in Turina’s musical personality. Richard E. Rodda

Although Debussy called her simply “The Saxophone Lady,” Elise Hall was in fact one of the Boston Coolidges—the daughter of prominent merchant Joseph S. Coolidge and a direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson. (She was no relation to Calvin Coolidge, nor to the ancestors of composer John Coolidge Adams.) Bostonborn (in 1853), French-trained, and later safely transplanted to California, where she lived with her surgeon husband, Richard J. Hall, Elise was advised to take up a wind instrument to help her recover from bouts of typhus that had affected her hearing. Claiming that the saxophone was the only instrument she could find in the then small town of Santa Barbara, Elise eventually became an accomplished saxophone player and later one of its greatest champions. After her husband died in 1897, Elise moved back to Boston, where she founded the Boston Orchestral Club (which she financed for a decade) and commissioned twenty-two works by sixteen composers for the instrument she had come to love. “The Saxophone Lady is inquiring about her piece,” Debussy wrote in 1904, three years after Mrs. Hall had commissioned a new work from the prominent French composer. “Of course, I assured her that . . . it is the only subject that occupies my thoughts.” That, of course, was far from the truth, and in fact Debussy had never abov e : Debussy, 1895, photographed by Paul Nadar (1856–1939)

before written for the instrument invented by Belgian-born Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. (The saxophone caught on quickly; as early as 1842, Hector Berlioz, a close friend of Sax, was already writing about the new invention in a Paris journal.) There was very little significant music that included the instrument that Debussy might have known, aside from Bizet’s incidental music to L’arlésienne or two operas, Hérodiade and Werther, by Jules Massenet, a composer he plainly disliked. Richard Strauss, a genuine master of orchestration, didn’t incorporate the saxophone into his arsenal until the Domestic Symphony he composed in 1903, after Debussy had begun the new piece for Mrs. Hall. Two of the most famous saxophone solos in the literature—in Ravel’s Boléro and in his orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition—came in the decade after Debussy’s death. “So here I am,” Debussy wrote, “searching desperately for novel combinations to show off this aquatic instrument.” Furthermore, and not for the only time in his career, Debussy was running late on a job, his fee long ago spent. (Giulio Gatti-Casazza, the celebrated manager of the Metropolitan Opera, later gave him an advance on operas that he never delivered.) “Considering that this Fantaisie was ordered, and paid for, and eaten more than a year ago, I realize that I am behindhand with it. . . . The saxophone is a reed instrument with whose habits I am not very well acquainted. I wonder whether it indulges in romantic tenderness like the clarinet.” Debussy was apparently not encouraged by what he heard the following year, when he attended the Paris performance Elise gave of another of her commissions, Vincent d’Indy’s

Choral varié, and is said to have commented simply on how ridiculous it looked for a lady in a pink frock to play such a clumsy instrument. But, like Mozart, who made one offhand disparaging comment about the flute and then wrote magnificent music for it, Debussy comfortably overcame any reluctance about writing for the saxophone to compose one of the first important scores showcasing the instrument. It used to be claimed that Debussy was so disinterested in writing this piece that he never finished the score, and that it was left to his friend, composer and occasional four-hand piano partner Jean Roger-Ducasse, to put the piece in order and orchestrate it. But that is contradicted not only by the facts, but by the “finished” quality of the music itself. The score was completed in 1908 in a version for alto saxophone and piano, with ample indications for how it should be orchestrated—cues and instructions

that Roger-Ducasse dutifully followed the year after Debussy’s death. (By some accounts, Roger-Ducasse was at Debussy’s side when he died.) Apparently it was originally conceived as a Rapsodie arabe (it is still sometimes performed under that title), but Debussy eventually dropped the evocative adjective in favor of conjuring a more elusive, but equally exotic, atmosphere. The rhapsody is in one fluid movement. The saxophone enters with a voluptuously embellished melody not unlike the famously sinuous flute solo that opens the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Through frequent changes of tempo and mood, as the music builds through a series of passionate climaxes to the final whoosh, the saxophone magically dominates the proceedings—and Debussy proves himself a master of the instrument he hardly knew. Jacques Ibert was the son of a Parisian businessman, and it was his father’s intention that the boy follow in the paternal footsteps when it came time to choose a career. Jacques had other ideas, however, and he studied music in secret so as not to incur Papa’s displeasure. Curiously, Ibert chose to be admitted to the Paris Conservatory not as a musician but as an actor,

another of his ambitions since childhood, though he studied music along with histrionics. His musical instincts soon won out, however, and he decided that composition offered the more fruitful future course. He studied with Fauré and became friends with his classmates Arthur Honegger and Darius Milhaud. Ibert interrupted his studies during the First World War to serve with the French Navy, eventually becoming an officer in the Naval Reserve. He continued his education after the war at the Paris Conservatory with Paul Vidal, and in 1919 won the Prix de Rome. It was during his residency in Rome that he produced the work that brought him his first recognition, The Ballade of Reading Gaol,

based on the poem by Oscar Wilde. From 1937 to 1955, Ibert served as director of the Academy of Rome, then left Italy to become head of the united management of the Paris Opera and the Opéra Comique, a post he held for two years. His only visit to the United States was during the summer of 1950 to conduct master classes at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. Though best known for his witty Divertissement and the set of orchestral tone poems Escales (Ports of Call), Ibert produced a sizable amount of music, including seven operas; five ballets; numerous orchestral and vocal scores; concerted works for cello, flute, saxophone, and oboe; as well as chamber music and compositions for solo piano. Of his early compositions, which show the influence of Debussy and Ravel in their harmonic subtlety and colorful orchestration, he said, “The aim of music is to recall an impression rather than be directly descriptive.” His later music is more pointed and forceful, though without sacrificing his brilliant instrumental and harmonic panache.

bert wrote his Concertino da camera for the German saxophone virtuoso Sigurd Rascher, whose advocacy did more than that of any other performer to establish the instrument as a solo medium in the concert hall. Rascher had already succeeded in coaxing a concerto from Alexander Glazunov before presenting a request for a similar work to Ibert while the composer was vacationing at the coastal town of Houlgate in Normandy early in 1935. Given Rascher’s growing stature as a soloist and the French fascination with the saxophone (the instrument had been invented in Paris by Adolphe Sax a hundred years before and was enjoying a revival of interest because of the jazz mania then sweeping the country), Ibert willingly accepted the commission. (Frank Martin, Eric Coates, and others also contributed solo compositions to Rascher’s repertory in later years.) The opening Allegro con moto was finished in time for a performance in Paris on May 2, 1935; the completed work was premiered by Rascher at the Festival of the International Society for

Contemporary Music in Barcelona during April of the following year. The concerto da camera was an early baroque species of the genre employing dancelike rhythms and uncomplicated textures that was intended for performance in a secular setting (camera meaning chamber); it stood in contrast to the more serious and thoroughly imitative “church concerto” or concerto da chiesa. In their form and style, such compositions were important models for the neoclassical movement of the early twentieth century, and served as the inspiration for Ibert’s Concertino, whose diminutive title indicates its scoring for chamber orchestra. The work opens with a brisk introduction for strings and trumpet as preface to movement’s main theme, given by the saxophone. After a transition culminating in runs from the trumpet and horn, the soloist initiates a graceful melody that serves as the material of the central section. The orchestra appropriates this attractive theme, allowing the saxophone to weave virtuosic arabesques above it, before a little fugato in the woodwinds leads to the soloist’s recapitulation of the opening melody. Of the three-part Larghetto, which grows from the lyrical theme presented at the outset by the unaccompanied saxophone, Abraham Veinus wrote, “[It is] warm and sensuous, touched ever so slightly by the kind of sunset melancholy that deepens and endears the noon-tide gaieties of the outside movements.” The finale is music of good humor, whose ebullience erupts into a showy cadenza for the soloist before the concluding return of the movement’s principal theme. This work, one of Ibert’s most ingratiating creations, is a fine manifestation of his characteristic brilliance, wit, sentiment, abundance of invigorating melody, and piquant, modern harmonic idiom. profiles Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

In 1972, a group of young artists made history by creating an orchestra without a conductor in which musicians led themselves democratically. Since then, the Grammy Award–winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has recorded more than seventy albums on all major classical labels, toured to forty-six countries across four continents, and collaborated with hundreds of world-class soloists. Orpheus’s thirty-four member musicians work together as a collective and rotate leadership roles for all works performed, giving flight to unconventional interpretations. This democratic

structure also extends to organizational functions including programming and governance: the orchestra elects three members to artistic director positions and three to the Board of Trustees. An essential part of New York City’s cultural landscape, Orpheus presents an annual series at Carnegie Hall. Orpheus tours to major international venues and has appeared regularly in Japan for thirty years; recent engagements include the Prague Spring and Dresden music festivals and a twelve-concert tour of Asia. The orchestra’s extensive discography includes a June 2021 release on Nonesuch Records with pianist Brad Mehldau and the monumental fifty-five-CD box set of Orpheus’s complete recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, released in August 2021. Orpheus has commissioned and premiered more than fifty new works. Orpheus shares its collaborative model through education and community engagement initiatives that promote equity and access to the arts for listeners of all ages around the world. These include programs for K-12 students, opportunities for emerging professional musicians, and a music and wellness program for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Branford Marsalis Saxophone New Orleans-born Branford Marsalis is an award-winning saxophonist, bandleader, distinguished classical soloist, and a composer for film and Broadway. Over the course of his career, he has become a celebrated artist with three Grammy awards, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Marsalis has become increasingly sought after as a featured artist with acclaimed orchestras around the world, performing works by composers such as Copland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams, John Adams, and Villa-Lobos. However, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains Marsalis’s primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band’s latest release, The Secret Between

the Shadow and the Soul. In addition, Marsalis’s legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. Branford Marsalis’s screen credits as a composer include original music for Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks featuring Oprah Winfrey, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman, and the History Channel’s documentary Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre. The critically acclaimed Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play of the same name, produced by Denzel Washington. Marsalis received a 2021 Emmy Award nomination for the original music he composed and produced for Tulsa Burning in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) category. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award nomination for the acclaimed revival of August Wilson’s play Fences. Marsalis’s previous Broadway efforts include music for the revivals of Children of a Lesser God and A Raisin in the Sun, as well as The Mountaintop, which starred Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson.
