Chichester Festival Youth Theatre presents
SLEEPING BEAUTY By Rufus Norris From The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Charles Perrault
WELCOME
Welcome to the latest Christmas production from Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, and our final show of 2018. Sleeping Beauty represents both continuity and evolution. Like many of CFYT’s previous hit shows, it’s an adaptation of a much-loved classic – in this case by Rufus Norris, now Director of the National Theatre – with new music specially composed by Tom Brady. The production boasts set design by Simon Higlett and costumes by Ryan Dawson Laight, whose visually stunning approach was seen to great effect in 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and 2016’s Peter Pan. The 66-strong cast has been drawn from CFYT’s 800 members, who take part in weekly workshops in nine locations throughout the region, alongside 20 members of the Technical Youth Theatre.
productions included The Wizard of Oz and Oliver!, Lucy is uniquely qualified for this role in another important respect: she herself is a former member of CFYT. As you will read in this programme, her time in the Youth Theatre was the launchpad for her career, so we are doubly delighted to welcome her back to Chichester. The work of LEAP and the Youth Theatre is central to our ambition to engage and inspire as many young people as possible. It goes hand-in-hand with our educational projects in schools, and is complemented by our adult learning programme. Our Ageless campaign aims to ensure that theatre and live art remain at the heart of people’s lives, whatever age they are. Do please support this vital work if you can. I hope you enjoy today’s performance and wish you a joyous festive season.
Following in the footsteps of Dale Rooks, our Director of Learning, Education and Participation (who directed The Midnight Gang in Festival 2018) is the director Lucy Betts. Formerly Head of Performance at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, where her

Chichester Festival Youth Theatre presents
SLEEPING BEAUTY By Rufus Norris From The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Charles Perrault
TESTAMENT OF YOUTH Christmas. The time of year when theatres all over the land succumb to pantomime fever. Ohhhh, yes they do! But here in Chichester, things are different. The Festival Theatre is the only major theatre in the UK to hand over its main stage to its Youth Theatre every Christmas. Their productions are treated in exactly the same way as any of the Theatre’s Festival season shows, with similar high standards. No doubt that’s why Chichester Festival Youth Theatre has a well-established reputation as a springboard into the theatrical profession, both for young actors and those in backstage roles. Lucy Betts, the director of Sleeping Beauty, is a perfect example. ‘I was a member of the Youth Theatre from the age of 7 until I was 20 – I grew up with it!’, Lucy explains. ‘So when I had a call in February saying that they needed a director for the Christmas show, it was very serendipitous.’ Unsurprisingly, says Lucy, ‘It’s like coming home. The Youth Theatre is huge now and the building has really changed, but the ethos is still the same: faith in the young people and expecting amazing things of them, and enabling them to be capable and creative.’ The opportunity to audition for the Christmas production, as well as the biennial outdoor summer show and other smaller-scale productions, is just part of the attraction for the 800 members of CFYT, who take part each week in workshops for acting, dance, technical and musical theatre. These take place at CFT itself and at eight other locations across West Sussex. No auditions are necessary and bursary places are on offer for young people who need financial support. Weekly sessions are also run for young people with more specific additional needs. Sometimes, the chance to appear in a Festival season production might come along LUCY BETTS
too. In 2017, the majority of the schoolboys in Forty Years On were Youth Theatre members; Sephora Parish and Megan O’Hanlon appeared as the two younger daughters in Fiddler on the Roof; and CFYT members also appeared in The House They Grew Up In, The Stepmother and Quiz. This year, several appeared as Dior models in Flowers for Mrs Harris and Albie Stisted played George in The Midnight Gang. Another Youth Theatre member, 13 year-old Archie Elliot, shared the role of Charles in The Watsons. ‘I was actually doing some research and development workshops for Sleeping Beauty when one of the LEAP administrators emailed my parents saying there was an opportunity in a show coming up and would I be interested and have the time to do it?’ Archie says. ‘I was very excited so I went for it not knowing if I would get it, because these things can go either way, and I was lucky enough to get the part. Which was amazing and I was really shocked, especially as it was my first professional role.’ Having appeared in Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan, Archie is eager to acknowledge how valuable his CFYT experience has been. ‘The whole Youth Theatre environment is so professional, with the creative team and directors behind the whole process. Even though we’re all kids and still learning, there’s no attitude like “oh they’re a child, we can do it a tiny bit easier for them”. It’s really nice to show that we have the dedication and know what will be in store if we want to do this as a career.’ While Archie has had a ball doing The Watsons (‘I’ve learned so many different things – and two 18th century dances!’), he’s still considering his options as far as the future is concerned. ‘I probably want to do this for a living. But doing the Youth Theatre and the professional show has opened my eyes
to the more creative side of the theatre as well – I’m very young so I don’t know if I could choose yet, but definitely something to do with the performing arts.’ As Archie indicates, in addition to developing performance skills, backstage work is equally appealing. ‘The Technical Youth Theatre is extremely popular, offering a chance to explore all the practical, technical and creative elements that go into putting on productions: from lighting and sound design, pyrotechnics, stage management roles and backstage work, to make-up, costume and prop-making,’ says Dale Rooks, Director of the Learning, Education and Participation (LEAP) department. ‘Many of those involved have gone on to study technical theatre at university or drama schools and to take up stage management as a career.’
Victoria Rousell was a member of CFYT from the age of 10 – 18 and is now a vastly experienced Deputy Stage Manager (calling all the actors’ and technical cues during a performance), who describes the Youth Theatre as ‘pivotal’ to her career. ‘As a kid, you don’t realise there’s a backstage element; you just think “I want to be in a play”’, Victoria recalls. ‘I enjoyed performing but reached a point when I realised it wasn’t my forte. The Technical Youth Theatre made it a lot more apparent what goes on behind the scenes; I was Assistant Stage Manager [usually responsible for all the props used on a show] ARCHIE ELLIOT IN THE WATSONS
on The Silver Sword and then was DSM on one of the Connections plays when I was about 15. So from there, my interest in acting was superseded by my interest in technical theatre.’ After leaving school, Victoria did a two-year foundation degree in technical theatre at Northbrook College in Worthing, focusing on stage management and production management. Her college work experience included being ASM on CFYT’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005, following which she secured her first professional job at CFT the following Festival season. Having now spent nine years on The Lion King in the West End, she was delighted to return to Chichester as DSM on The Midnight Gang earlier this autumn. ‘CFYT was a brilliant gateway and stepping stone’, Victoria reflects. ‘The crossover with the main season gives so many opportunities, in surroundings you’re comfortable and familiar with. I’ve made such great friendships; you bond so much with the people you work with on a show. To get paid for doing what you enjoy most, and turn your hobby into a career, is a very fortunate position to be in.’ Nor should we forget the departments which provide the vital support to what happens on stage. Several former Youth Theatre members have undergone formal traineeships at CFT in areas such as Producing, Digital and Development; over the past year, three progressed to full-time employment here. Of course, not everyone who joins the Youth Theatre wants to make a career in theatre, but the experience can be of equal value. A recent survey of CFYT’s alumni suggests that their participation has given them greater confidence and the ability to communicate and present themselves more effectively in a variety of situations. ‘Youth Theatre members understand the importance of commitment, punctuality and the ability to collaborate and work as part of a team. They learn to be good listeners, who are respectful of others people’s views and opinions, and ultimately this enriches their positive interaction with the world of work’, Dale Rooks notes. After leaving CFYT, Lucy Betts went to Roehampton University where she read Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies. Having
spent some time back in Chichester conducting workshops as a freelance practitioner, she ran the Youth Theatre at The Spring in Havant before landing a full-time job as Youth Theatre Leader at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. She spent seven years there, eventually ‘working her way up’ to become Head of Performance, programming and directing work. She loved her time in Guildford, but has now embarked on a career as a freelance director and is thrilled to be working with Chichester’s own Youth Theatre again. ‘They are just the most incredibly focused, creative and passionate young people. They work really hard – they turn up half an hour early! They are so committed to what they do and so aware of how lucky they are to have this opportunity – not only to be in the show in the first place but to be in a show at Chichester Festival Theatre. There are young people all over the country who would love an opportunity like this, and they don’t take it for granted.’ That opportunity includes working with a brilliant and experienced creative team, including the set and costume designers Simon Higlett and Ryan Dawson Laight who’ve worked on many CFYT shows including Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan. Nevertheless, Lucy says, ‘Ultimately it all comes from the young people. It wouldn’t be the same show without their creativity, input and ideas, and their willingness to go on this massive journey. For me that’s what’s really special about Youth Theatre and MEMBERS OF THE COMPANY
why it’s so important.’ Her thoughts are echoed by Rufus Norris, the writer of this version of Sleeping Beauty. He, too, began his theatrical career in a youth theatre, in his case the Swan Youth Theatre in Worcester. He is now Director of the National Theatre (the first since Laurence Olivier not to have been to Cambridge): not a bad testament to the value of Youth Theatre. ‘Creative self-expression or the confidence that comes with it, the community you build through it, the shared discipline, the interdependency, are incredible life skills,’ he says. ‘For me, the Swan Youth Theatre was a great social centre but they insisted on us taking the work seriously. And what we got out of it as a result was a huge amount of self-confidence and also a real knowledge of what it is to rely on other people and how much more powerful shared achievement is. A flock of geese fly 70% further than individual geese, that’s just a fact. ‘It’s completely brilliant that the Youth Theatre in Chichester are given this opportunity. And even if none of them go into the theatre as a career, or even go to the theatre again, it doesn’t matter because their ability to deal with the obstacles life throws at them, or to think their way out of a box, or to know that pressure sometimes helps you to perform at your best, to know when to ask for help – those things are invaluable.’ LUCINDA MORRISON
CONTEMPORY CLASSICS Designer Ryan Dawson Laight was keen to bring a contemporary edge to classical fairy tale costumes, using exaggerated shapes and drawing inspiration from 17th Century design. Take a look at just a few of these re-imaginings in Ryan’s original costume sketches.

MAKE YOUR OWN CROWN Take a paper plate and paint the under-side in a colour of your choosing.
Once the paint has dried fold it in half and cut along the black dashed lines (shown in the diagram below). Do not cut all the way through. Cut it up to the ruffle edge of the plate.
Unfold the plate and bend each of the triangles up to create the points of the crown. Finish it off by decorating the crown using pens, stickers and glitter!
Open up the plate to make the last 2 cuts (shown by the red dashed line).

SUPPORT US
COME CLOSER Did you know that Chichester Festival Theatre is a registered charity? And that you can play an essential role and get more involved in what we do? The generosity and commitment of our supporters, whether their donation is large or small, has helped us achieve our reputation as ‘the jewel in the crown of regional theatres’ (Daily Telegraph). Here are some of the ways you can support the Theatre to maintain our world-class standards, extend our dedicated community and education work, and inspire the future generation of performers, theatre-makers and audiences. In return, we’ll give you a range of benefits to bring you closer to our work. As a Friend of Chichester Festival Theatre, for just £35 a year you’ll receive priority booking, ticket discounts and special events. Visit cft.org.uk/friends for further details.
Our Festival Players are a community of theatre-loving individuals who receive advance priority booking, the opportunity to meet Artistic and Creative teams and invitations to exclusive events throughout the season. You can become a member from £250 a year. Benefactors enjoy an especially close relationship with the Theatre, gaining unique insight into the creative process. Gifts support all areas of our work, from our award-winning Youth Theatre to the Playwrights’ Fund and Trainee programmes. Bespoke communications throughout the year from a personal contact at Chichester Festival Theatre keep you in touch with the impact of your gift. We’d love to tell you more about the ways you can support us. Please contact the Development Team on development.team@cft.org.uk or call 01243 812908.
