Chichester Festival Theatre Annual Review 2017 -18

2017-18

‘Chichester Festival Theatre is quite simply the best the British regions have to offer. More than that, it entirely sets the pace for the West End. Show after show, first produced in our city, transfer to national acclaim in London. The CFT is not merely a Chichester jewel, it is a national treasure. It shimmers and shines more brightly now than ever’ Chichester Observer (February 2018) 2

ANNUAL REVIEW 2017-18

2017 marked the inaugural Festival season under Chichester Festival Theatre’s new leadership team of Daniel Evans and Rachel Tackley as Artistic and Executive Director respectively. It proved to be one of the most extraordinary Festivals in CFT’s history, of superb quality in breadth and depth, which met with resounding admiration. With two musicals, powerful drama and classic comedy, as well as three new writing premieres and a Youth Theatre production of remarkable standard, audiences were delighted and stimulated in equal measure. Forty Years On, the opening production of the season, was the first play to take over £1million at the box office. Fiddler on the Roof became the best-selling show, in terms of both money and tickets, in CFT’s history. Overall, we saw the highest audience attendance to date for a Festival season of over 232,000. Festival 2017 was followed by a diverse Winter Season with visiting productions playing in both theatres and the much-loved Youth Theatre Christmas show. A round-up of 2017-18 would not be complete without mention of two memorable visits to CFT which attracted major press coverage. Firstly, the visit of Her Majesty the Queen in November to a special performance led by our Youth Theatre. In March, CFT was at the heart of a community celebration when British astronaut Tim Peake received the Freedom of the City in front of a packed house of over 1,300 mostly local children.

CFT’s current position provides a strong platform from which we continue to produce high quality theatre and welcome all to enjoy and participate in a variety of theatre experiences, firmly at the heart of our local community whilst growing our reputation nationally and internationally. Our Youth Theatre goes from strength to strength with over 800 members. Our wider Learning, Education and Participation (LEAP) programme creates 62,000 opportunities to participate for those aged 0–92 including those with disabilities and mental health issues. Like many arts organisations, we are reliant on significant financial support from Arts Council England (ACE), as well as Chichester District Council, and have secured funding for 2018 to 2022. In addition, we thank our many corporate and private supporters to whom we are extremely grateful. I am thrilled that CFT is increasingly firmly rooted in its community. My fellow Trustees and I share the passion of its staff, creative teams and actors, volunteers, audiences and the many supporters who combine together to deliver such results. Sir William Castell Chairman

ANNUAL REVIEW 2017-18

This annual review looks back on an exciting year, our first year of programming at CFT. Festival 2017 saw the first new UK production of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s musical Caroline, Or Change, three new writing premieres by Edna O’Brien, Deborah Bruce and James Graham, and Blanche McIntyre’s revival of Ayckbourn’s The Norman Conquests which marked the Festival Theatre’s first in-the-round staging. Three productions went on to transfer to London’s West End in 2018 including King Lear, which will be broadcast nationally and internationally by NT Live. CFT took great steps over the year to increase the diversity of our work both on stage and off, offering opportunities for career progression for creatives from a more diverse background in terms of age, disability and ethnicity. As well as delivering a jam-packed season, it was important to reach all our communities – locally, regionally, nationally and internationally – through compelling, entertaining and enlightening theatre.

In 2017 the price of tickets in our Prologue scheme for 16-25 year olds was reduced to £5, tripling the number of Prologue tickets sold in the previous year. We also continued to maintain over 10,000 general tickets at £10. There were a number of ‘CFT firsts’ in the 2017 season including hosting a relaxed performance of the summer musical for the first time and an exclusive free schools’ matinee performance of Caroline, Or Change which was attended by children from seven local schools. We pioneered live streaming transmissions to hospitals in 2017, ensuring that even those unable to attend the Theatre in person could also enjoy our work. We couldn’t have achieved all that we have accomplished throughout 2017 without the support of our staff and generosity of our supporters. Thank you very much. Daniel Evans Artistic Director

‘It has been a joy working at CFT. I am a ‘mid-career’ director, and working on The Country Girls provided me with a wonderful opportunity to work with one of the most exciting producing houses in England.’ Lisa Blair, Director, The Country Girls ‘I had a truly unforgettable six weeks in Chichester and couldn’t have wished for a better cast, creative team and audience to start my career with. The thought of performing Edna’s legendary novel in such a reputable theatre was extremely daunting, but the team at CFT managed to make me feel at home straight away and I can’t thank you enough for that.’ Grace Molony, Actor, The Country Girls

‘I was thrilled that CFT wanted to produce The Stepmother. I was equally thrilled that the production was so well served by the resident staff and was so enthusiastically received by the loyal and intelligent audience.’ Richard Eyre, Director, The Stepmother ‘Every department strives to achieve excellence and there is joy running throughout the building.’ Samantha Spiro, Actor, The House They Grew Up In ‘Working at Chichester, with the incredible team, is such a creatively rewarding experience for me. Whether it be reviving an older play, or building from scratch a brand new show like Quiz, the theatre here is a safe and exciting place to try new things.’ James Graham, Playwright, Quiz ‘Playing Golde in Daniel Evans’s production of Fiddler on the Roof this summer was a career highlight. The production values, the orchestration, set, lighting – the care to detail, the Chichester team as a whole are top of their game. The Chichester audiences took Fiddler to their hearts and there was a great feeling of warmth and pride towards all of us in the cast, wherever we went in the city.’ Tracy-Ann Oberman, Actor, Fiddler on the Roof

‘Organisations such as Chichester Festival Theatre, which runs some of the finest and most far reaching youth theatre and participation provision in the country, is enabling hundreds of young people to access the arts education which they are not getting at school…. Thank you, Dale Rooks, Director of LEAP at Chichester Festival Theatre, for allowing a group of very concerned people to debate these issues.’ Susan Elkin (‘The State of Education’ debate, July 2017)

ANNUAL REVIEW 2017-18

CFT is committed to taking its work well beyond the Theatre to engage and inspire people of all ages, and explore what we can offer to people who may not find it easy to watch a performance in the usual way. In the community we work with people with disabilities and mental health issues, with increasing focus on giving people living with dementia and their carers opportunities to participate in our work. Our work in the community is supported by our Ageless campaign. Launched on Giving Tuesday 2017, Ageless has received generous donations from our Friends, Supporters and the general public. Creative Responses engaged 60 local people, from four care homes in priority areas in West Sussex, in weekly dementia friendly sessions. Busy Bees, a pre-school group, joined them during the programme. ‘Many initially considered themselves as ‘not creative’ and therefore the fact that they even attended was a huge step for them as individuals and involved a certain amount of ‘risk’ taking.’ Creative Responses Practitioner ‘Very interesting and creative. We all felt daunted at first, but were very pleased with the finished poem.’ Participant FestivALL was a two-day festival celebrating achievements and talents of young people with additional needs. ‘The show was absolutely outstanding and I was left feeling really inspired. Everyone involved should be really proud of what they achieved this weekend.’ Audience member

CFT Buddies was piloted, offering companions to those patrons who are unable or feel uncomfortable coming to the theatre alone. This free scheme benefits those with learning disabilities as well as the elderly and socially isolated. ‘Where did you find these wonderful people! It was such a joy to learn about their experience of the theatre, whether it is their profession or, like me, they are enthusiastic about theatre and CFT in particular.’ Buddy service user ‘I just love coming to work at CFT! I am happy to give up my free time to assist a wonderful organisation. I am very proud to be a part of this fabulous theatre.’ Volunteer 45 Young Carers were hosted for a day at Christmas, including a tour, a workshop, a visit from Santa and tickets to see Beauty and the Beast, after which they met the cast. ‘I enjoyed every part of it so much, please can I come back!’ Young Carer ‘Emily came away with a sense of achievement, a sense of having been valued and a sense of having a wider social network. Six schools from areas of economic and social deprivation worked on a six-week creative literacy programme. Case Study: Playtime Playtime is a playwriting project working with underachieving pupils in Year 5 and Year 6. The programme aims to develop literacy skills and confidence through a series of in-school workshops, culminating in the creation of unique scripts developed for performance by participants. The programme took place across six weeks between January and March 2018. ‘Writing is an area for development in our school and we are always looking for ways to improve writing for those children who struggle. A free opportunity is really exciting for our small school and the children get a lot out of it.’ Rachel, Hawthorns Primary School ‘We got to use the real scripts and decide what we would do with it, which was new and lots of fun.’ Pupil, South Bersted C of E Primary School

‘The standard they achieve is remarkable... this is down to skilled, charismatic leadership and the committed investment by CFT in this aspect of its work. It’s an integrated part of the organisation not something earnestly bolted on. And the difference shines out.’ Susan Elkin, Ink Pellet Each week, over 800 young people join our CFYT sessions at nine different locations across West Sussex.

‘It’s been so wonderful to see my son joining in a group, being part of a gang and being included. Making him feel he’s just like them and not different. Usually when he goes to mainstream clubs and events the other children ignore him, but with Youth Theatre he is totally included which is wonderful for him and a credit to you, the children and other staff.’

90 CFYT bursary places (11% of membership), enabling participation of marginalised and disadvantaged children and young people. 8% increase. CFT’s first fully inclusive and integrated CFYT company of young performers from mainstream and disability groups. Selected to perform at NT Connections, in partnership with the National Theatre. 142 young people completed their Arts Award including one achieving Gold Award status and praise from the moderator ‘the best Gold Award he had ever moderated’. CFT awarded national recognition as an Arts Award Good Practice Centre (only UK theatre awarded this status in 2017/18). 70 CFYT members performed for the Queen

The Mid-Career Artists programme piloted with the aim of offering transformative opportunities to mid-career artists whose professional journeys are being restricted by glass ceilings. Each artist is supported by a mentor, funded by a new initiative, the Futures Fund. One of the first artists to join the programme was Carolyn Downing, an Olivier Award-winning sound designer who had never been given the opportunity to design for a musical.

The new Assistant Director programme saw six young directors working on Festival 2017, all of whom had less than three years of directing or assisting experience; four were from a BAME background.

The Playwrights Fund is a programme that nurtures opportunities for writers and creatives to develop their work with us. Our central aim is to curate a diverse repertoire of new writing that speaks to the time and place in which we live. Work is developed over a period of two to five years. The programme was launched in 2018, with 12 titles in the portfolio; it is supported by the Futures Fund. The Apprenticeship programme gave 11 young people formal apprenticeship opportunities in the Producing, LEAP, Finance, Digital and Technical departments; three went on to full-time employment at CFT. CFT recognises that it is vital to minimise our impact on the environment to ensure sustainability for the long term. In 2017 our EPC energy rating further improved from category C 53 to category B 44, achieved through ongoing adoption of LED lighting and energy friendly technologies. Heat recovery units have been installed in both Theatres, allowing us to maximise the re-use of any waste energy. The Renewable Heat Incentive recognises that we produce our own energy via a ground source heat pump system buried in Oaklands Park, adjacent to the Theatre. Working in partnership with our waste and recycling partner Veolia, we are now able to recycle all ice-cream tubs and shredded paper. In 2017 we successfully piloted a cycle-hire scheme, loaning CFT bicycles to visiting artists, alongside the cycle to work initiative offered to all full time staff.
