MACBETH

21 September – 26 October

By William Shakespeare Much celebrated for his forthright bravery, Macbeth is a state hero. After the bloody defeat of a rebel army, he encounters a trio of strangers who predict that one day he will be King. Having delivered their ambiguous message, they vanish, leaving a mind cracked open. Fearing that her husband lacks the vital drive to take charge of his fate, Lady Macbeth invokes her stronger nature to fulfil their destiny. The plan she hatches will trigger an uncontrollable train of events, hurtling two corrupted souls to the heart of darkness. Shakespeare’s great tragedy shows ambition falling headlong into tyranny and chaos. As appearances increasingly deceive, the nature of reality itself comes into question.

WORLD PREMIERE

THE BUTTERFLY LION By Michael Morpurgo In a new adaptation by Anna Ledwich When Bertie is sent away from the African farm of his childhood to school in England, he leaves behind not only his beloved mother and the beautiful land, swarming with wildlife, but also his best friend – a white lion he rescued as a cub. Bertie’s struggle to adjust to his new life in harsh, grey England is alleviated only by a chance friendship with the equally lonely Millie and his dreams of his treasured lion, now trapped in a French circus. But their remarkable journey is only just beginning, and the pair are destined to meet again. The Butterfly Lion combines music, design and puppetry to bring a magical adventure to life: celebrating nature, friendship and the triumph of love.

PRISM

F E S T I VA L T H E AT R E

5–9 November

Written and Directed by Terry Johnson Following a sold-out run at London’s Hampstead Theatre, don’t miss the astonishing true story of the man who made Hollywood’s greatest divas beautiful. Robert Lindsay is ‘magnetic’ (Guardian), ‘perfect’ (Times) and ‘glorious’ (Mail on Sunday) in Terry Johnson’s delightfully witty and poignant play based on the extraordinary life of double Oscar-winning cinematic master Jack Cardiff, ‘the man who made women look beautiful’ (Vanity Fair). The legendary Jack Cardiff has retired to the sleepy village of Denham, Buckinghamshire. His days of hard work – and play – on some of the most famous film sets in the world are now long behind him, as are his secret liaisons with some of the most famous women in the world... Surrounded by memorabilia from a lifetime of ‘painting with light’, the writing of an autobiography should be an easy matter – were it not that Jack would now rather live in the past than remember it.

Created by Told by an Idiot In 1910 the unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail for New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe. On this journey, Charlie and Stan shared a cabin and then spent two years together touring North America, with Stan as Charlie’s understudy. Stan returned home, later finding success with his soulmate Oliver Hardy. Charlie developed his Little Tramp character and within five years became one of the most famous figures in the world. In Charlie Chaplin’s highly detailed autobiography Stan Laurel is never mentioned. Stan talked about Charlie all his life. Playing fast and loose with the facts and with an original piano score composed by Mercury Award Nominee Zoe Rahman played live each night, The Strange Tale of Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel is no nostalgic bio-drama, but an hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever. Co-commissioned by London International Mime Festival. The events in this play are fictional. This play is certainly not endorsed by the estates of Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel or anyone else for that matter!

PUSH: AN OPERA Push tells the true story of Simon Gronowski who, as an 11-year-old, was pushed from a train to Auschwitz by his mother, to save him from the gas chambers. Retold as an opera, written by acclaimed composer Howard Moody and performed by Chichester Community Choirs, school children and University students, it is ultimately an uplifting story about the strength of the human spirit, and considers the ongoing plight of refugees.
