WINTER SEASON
WELCOME Welcome to a true feast of a Winter season. Seeing audiences flood back into our Theatres this summer has given us immense joy, and we’ve been moved and uplifted by their evident happiness at being able to revel once more in the exhilaration of live entertainment. Thank you to everyone who told us how happy they were to be back; we hope that you will equally relish what is on offer over the coming months. We still have two Festival 2021 productions to look forward to – Suhayla El-Bushra’s world premiere adaptation of Andrea Levy’s great novel The Long Song, and a revival of David Storey’s Home – before we greet an enticing array of visiting drama, dance, comedy, family shows and music for all tastes and ages. We’re particularly proud to offer a new home-grown production too: the revival of one of the best plays of modern times, John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Award-winning Doubt, directed by Lia Williams and featuring Monica Dolan in her Chichester debut. There’s a wealth of comedies from the classic to the contemporary, among which we’re delighted to include the Birmingham Rep/National Theatre anniversary production of Ayub Khan Din’s East Is East. Among the familiar faces making welcome returns are Henry Goodman, Nigel Havers, Patricia Hodge, Rufus Hound, Penelope Keith, Omid Djalili, David Suchet and Issy van Randwyck. And there’s a second chance to see our marvellous Chichester Festival Youth Theatre production of Pinocchio at Christmas. If you weren’t able to see this fantastic show last year, come and see how the next generation of performers are leading the way! We are, of course, continuing to ensure that we offer a Covid-safe environment, in line with all the latest government guidance, for you to enjoy a return to live performances. We look forward to seeing you.

A new adaptation by Suhayla El-Bushra Based on the novel by Andrea Levy ‘You do not know me yet but I am the heroine of this drama. I am told that here I must give a taste of what is to unfold. I am to convey that this tale is set in Jamaica during the last turbulent days of slavery and the early years of freedom. ‘I was born a slave upon a sugar plantation named Amity. I was there when the Baptist War raged in 1831, and when slavery was declared no more. It tells of my mama Kitty, of the negroes enslaved, of Caroline Mortimer the woman who owned me. I am to say that it is a true and thrilling journey through that unsettled time.

By David Storey If a person can’t be what they are, what’s the purpose of being anything at all? Harry and Jack. Marjorie and Kathleen. Alfred. In a neglected garden, small talk oscillates between the weather, the neighbours, reminiscences of friends and family, and anecdotes of past exploits in love and war.

But this quintet of characters, with their foibles and failings, are not what they seem to be, and nor is their home. And overhead, the clouds are gathering. David Storey’s award-winning 1970 play has become a modern classic – a heartrendingly funny, haunting and deeply humane study of hearts, minds and England: islands adrift.

EAST IS EAST By Ayub Khan Din The smash-hit comedy-drama celebrates its 25th anniversary. George Khan wants to raise his family the proper Pakistani way but hasn’t counted on the distractions of 70s Salford. Abdul and Tariq aren’t ready to be married off, Saleem is pushing artistic boundaries, Meenah’s skirt is too short and Sajid just wants to hide in his parka. Can mum Ella keep the family together? Since premiering at the Birmingham Rep in 1996, East Is East has sold out three London runs, been adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film and become a modern classic of comic-drama. Discover this joyous play in a new production directed by Iqbal Khan, which comes to Chichester following its run at the National Theatre. Iqbal Khan is an Associate Artist at Birmingham Rep; his extensive work with the RSC includes Tartuffe, Antony and Cleopatra and Othello. The cast is led by Tony Jayawardena (Ackley Bridge, The Crown, Bend It Like Beckham) as George and Sophie Stanton (best known to a wide TV audience as DCI Jill Marsden in EastEnders) as Ella. The company also includes Rachel Lumberg, returning to Chichester where she last appeared as Sian in This Is My Family.

PINOCCHIO A new adaptation by Anna Ledwich Music by Tom Brady From the original novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi Geppetto the boatmaker tosses aside a piece of wood; it’s only good for the fire. To his amazement, a voice answers him back. Geppetto picks up the wood and begins to carve – and a small wooden boy is revealed. A puppet, which he names Pinocchio. And that’s when the mayhem begins. Pinocchio can’t stop getting into trouble, despite the best efforts of the Fairy and the Cricket to keep him on track. His intentions may be good – he truly wants to go to school like real boys and girls – but the temptation to discover the wonders of the world and make his fortune keep getting in the way. Pinocchio encounters a host of fascinating characters, from Punch and Judy to the wily Fox and Cat and the strange Sea Monster, as he journeys to Wonderland and the world beneath the sea. But he discovers that it isn’t easy hiding the truth – especially when your nose gets longer with every lie you tell… Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s brand new version of this classic tale by Anna Ledwich had just 15 live performances in 2020 before it was streamed globally during lockdown. Dale Rooks’s darkly magical production now returns for Christmas 2021, with the revival directed by Bobby Brook. Ages 7+

THE PLAY WHAT I WROTE by Hamish McColl and Sean Foley and, of course, Eddie Braben When The Play What I Wrote opened in London’s West End, every single review was a rave, every show a sell-out and it won every major theatre award. The Sunday Times called it ‘a triumph’ and The Observer said ‘audiences weep with laughter’. Hamish has written a play, an epic set in the French Revolution called ‘A Tight Squeeze for the Scarlet Pimple’. Sean, on the other hand, wants to continue with their double act. He believes that if they perform a tribute to Morecambe and Wise, Hamish’s confidence will be restored and the double act will go on. But first Sean needs to persuade a guest star to appear in the play what Hamish wrote... With a mystery guest star at every performance, this ‘recklessly, tear-inducingly funny show’ (The Guardian) is ‘a loving celebration of comic genius which is itself touched with comic genius’ (Daily Telegraph).

POSTING LETTERS TO THE MOON An evening of wartime letters between the actress Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) and her husband Peter Fleming, read by Lucy Fleming (their daughter) and Simon Williams. These touching and amusing letters from Celia to her husband tell of her experiences during the war – from coping with a large isolated house full of evacuated children, occasional holidays in Cornwall where she took to surfing, to accepting offers when she could get away, to act – for David Lean, Noël Coward, wartime propaganda films and in 1945, in the classic film Brief Encounter. A highly engaging and fascinating historical insight into that time of true austerity and fearfulness.
