WELCOME

We’re delighted to share our Winter 2022/23 programme, a collection of some of the best touring productions currently on offer in the UK. Following our own exciting new musical adaptation of The Famous Five, we have plenty more musicals this winter season. International smash hit SIX returns, and we welcome the double Olivier and Tony Award-winning Girl From The North Country ; while the first ever professional touring production of the joyous musical comedy Bugsy Malone will be entertaining Chichester families throughout February half term. Our Christmas centrepiece comes from the ever-popular Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, and this year they present Alan Bennett’s witty and enchanting adaptation of The Wind in the Willows. Our festive season wouldn’t be complete without the Christmas Concerts, and Dear Santa offers an opportunity for young children to experience theatre for the first time. There’s lots more on offer for smaller theatregoers throughout the season: see pages 34 and 44 to read more about what’s in store both on and off stage for all the family. And of course there are also some star-studded dramas, with a revival of Mrs Warren’s Profession and new stage adaptations of The Lavender Hill Mob and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, plus a host of shows with us for one night only including stand up comedy, music and dance. Our extensive programme of events off stage ensures that there are opportunities for everyone to get involved with CFT outside of seeing a show. From Half Term Hangouts for refugees and asylum seekers to schools workshops for The Famous Five and Jina and The STEM Sisters, from a Lightning Bug Dance Workshop with Dotdotdot Dance to a one-off special Fizz & Feminism with the cast of SIX, we’re constantly looking for new ways to connect with our artists and audiences. This winter we are also proud to be hosting a national Youth Conference bringing together young people, alongside organisations and individuals who work with them, who are changing and challenging the cultural landscape. Whether it’s your first time coming to CFT, you’ve been enjoying our 60th anniversary Festival Season or you’re returning after some time away from us, we look forward to seeing you this winter.

David Greig’s book, based on Bill Forsyth’s iconic film, features new songs by the legendary Mark Knopfler (formerly of Dire Straits). This new musical version of Local Hero will win devotees from admirers of the beloved film as well as those coming fresh to this funny and enchanting story. It’s directed by Daniel Evans, whose previous Chichester productions include the five star hit Our Generation earlier this year, South Pacific, Quiz and Fiddler on the Roof

It’s 1983 and hotshot Texan oil executive Mac MacIntyre is dispatched to the tiny Scottish fishing village of Ferness with $30million in his pocket. The bay may have views to die for but it’s the only place that can take the tankers from an offshore oil field, so it’s up to Mac to seal a deal on the locals’ homes and put a refinery in Thetheir place.villagers aren’t averse to cashing in on the black gold and Gordon, the local hotelier-lawyer-accountant-ceilidh organiser, proves a surprisingly tough negotiator. But they’ve all overlooked one very important person. And as the northern lights dance in the skies, Mac comes to realise that not everything of value is for sale.

The men who broke the bank and lost the cargo are back in this brand new, hilarious adaptation of the classic Ealing Comedy The Lavender Hill Mob. Come and see one of the ‘greatest British films of all time’ (BFI) brought to life on stage by Olivier-nominated playwright Phil Porter, directed by Tony and Olivier nominated Jeremy Sams and starring acclaimed comic actors Miles Jupp (A Very British Scandal, Mock The Week, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans ) and Justin Edwards (The Thick of It , 1917, The Ferryman). This side-splittingly funny, fast-paced comedy tells the story of Henry Holland, an unassuming bank clerk who dreams of stealing the van full of gold bullion he drives across London each day. When Henry learns that his new lodger makes Eiffel Tower paperweights out of lead, he devises a plan to make his dream a reality. It’s a golden opportunity to pull off the crime of the century, they’d have to be fools to mess it up… Come and rediscover a much-loved classic in this brand-new stage play that promises to be the most fun night out of the year!

The double Olivier and Tony Award-winning West End and Broadway hit. Celebrated playwright Conor McPherson (The Weir, The Seafarer ) boldly reimagines the legendary songs of Bob Dylan, like you’ve never heard them before, in Girl From The North Country. An uplifting and universal story about family and love, hailed by The Observer as the ‘No.1 theatre show of the year’. It’s 1934 in the heartland of America and we meet a group of wayward souls who cross paths in a time-weathered guesthouse. Standing at a turning point in their lives, they realise nothing is what it seems. But as they search for a future, and hide from the past, they find themselves facing unspoken truths about the present. Now audiences in Chichester have the chance to experience this ‘magnificent’ (Standard), ‘astonishing’ (Guardian) and ‘piercingly beautiful’ (Independent) production, brought vividly to life by an extraordinary company of actors and musicians.

The Theory of Relativity (2016) is a joyous, moving and unconventional look at our surprisingly interconnected lives, presented through a collection of songs, scenes and monologues. We are introduced to a compelling array of characters experiencing the joys and heartbreaks, the liaisons and losses, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection. In Moby Dick! The Musical, we see the resourceful girls of St. Godley’s School come up with a plan to keep the school afloat by staging a fundraiser, featuring their headmistress in the coveted role of Captain Ahab. This cult hit is a giant, over-the-top retelling of the classic novel with a catchy, witty score that will keep audiences laughing.

Southern Pro Musica returns with this perfect introduction to live music played by a full professional orchestra. This hour long concert features musical classics such as a colourful Rossini Overture, Tchaikovsky ballet music and much more, including audience participation compered by the brilliant musical magician Neil Henry and conducted by Jonathan Willcocks
