TRI-STATE MUSEUM
with The Tri-State Museum
If the brief glimpse of our story has piqued your interest, stay with us for a few days and dive deeper into our area’s pioneer history and lore. The Tri-State Museum is full of knowledge and tales illustrated with the West’s priceless artifacts and an illustrated photo history. Admission is always free; it is also home to a wide area of complimentary travel resources, friendly staff, and interactive activities for the whole family to enjoy. Take a break for lunch and picnic at the Center of The Nation Monument, located just a few steps away from the museum entrance. Belle Fourche, South Dakota, holds the distinction of being “The Center of the Nation.” When Hawaii was admitted to the Union in 1959, its landmass – added to the landmass of the continental U.S. – shifted the geographic center of the 50 states to latitude 44 degrees, 58’N, longitude 103 degrees 46’W, which is approximately 20 miles north of Belle Fourche. This actual geographic center is marked with a small metal survey marker and a flag. It is on private land, though it is generally accessible. If you are interested in making the trek, stop in and ask for old-fashioned directions from a staff member (GPS isn’t always the most reliable tool on the prairie). Local artist Monte Amende created the brilliant rose-shaped monument. It’s formed with South Dakota granite, surrounded by “The Avenue of Flags,” and an impressive 21 feet across; it’s the perfect spot to pose for a memorable photo. In August, if you are traveling through on your way to Sturgis or Alzada, check for details to have a photo with your bike on the actual monument, the perfect souvenir for the 82nd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
