The world-famous Black Hills Roundup has been captivating rodeo enthusiasts since 1918. The rodeo began with a purpose to help support the Red Cross during the first world war. They were successful and 15,000 people (an impressive amount considering the town’s estimated population at the time was under 1,500) gathered in a dusty field to make the event a success. The Roundup started as a volunteer event, and today, it still is operated 100% by volunteers.

The original rodeo in 1918 had fewer moving pieces than you will see at the 103rd Roundup in July. It was once a grandstand with no tall metal fence to keep spectators safe, just a fence that was perhaps almost enough to keep you safe from a wild bucking bronc. It was a way for cowboys to compete and show off their hard-earned ranch skills.

SPECALITY ACT • Tomas Garcilazo, a native of Mexico City, was introduced at an early age to his family heritage and tradition of "La Charreria" which is a skill performed through the generations only by the Mexican Charro. Charros take extreme pride in their highly developed horsemanship and roping abilities. Tomas, third-generation Charro, has devoted his life to sharing Mexico's National Sport La Charreria with the world.
