Spearfish Celebrating 125 years

March 2, 2013 Young Athletes™ is a unique sport and play program for children with intellectual disabilities and an early introduction to sports and to the world of Special Olympics. The focus is on fun activities that are important to mental and physical growth. Children ages 2 1/2 to 7 enjoy activities that develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Young Athletes is a versatile program that can work in various learning situations. It is designed for families to play with their young athletes at home in a fun atmosphere. It is also appropriate for preschools, schools and play groups to use with small groups of young children with and without intellectual disabilities. The flexibility of Young Athletes ensures the opportunity to welcome families and their young children into the Special Olympics family. SRAC will partner with Special Olympics South Dakota to offer this program in the spring of 2013. Contat Brett. rauterkus@cityofspearfish.com

Festivities will begin in January, and culminate with an official birthday celebration Sept. 13-15. The “grand finale” weekend will be jam-packed with activities to entertain both area residents and visitors alike.

srac & community events

Young Athletes

It’s been 125 years since the quaint agricultural town of Spearfish was officially incorporated, and several events have been planned throughout 2013 to celebrate this milestone.

The birthday celebration also provides an opportunity to showcase the rich history that makes Spearfish the true “Queen City.” Since 1888, this community has evolved from a closeknit farming community that existed to supply the gold camps in Deadwood, into a thriving academic and cultural center. The full schedule of events, as well as dates and locations will be updated throughout the year. Trails/Campground

Trail System

City Campground

The Spearfish Recreation Trail system was begun in 1985 after the death of two young bicyclists. The Spearfish Pathways Association (SPA) was formed with a goal of establishing a path safe mode of transportation for bikes, walkers, and runners through town to help maximize safety by minimizing contact with motorized traffic. The other goal of the SPA was to construct the path with minimal use of tax money. The SPA was able to construct 2 miles of path, but with limited funds and a desire to expedite the project the City of Spearfish took over.

404 S. Canyon St., Spearfish, SD 57783 Phone: 605-642-1340 (Unavailable October 1 through May 15)

In 1990, the City of Spearfish was successful in obtaining its first of several grant funding opportunities to further advance the Recreation Path System. The priority route first established by the City was to run the route north and south through the City and adjacent to Spearfish Creek. This section would also link the city parks and the City Campground that border Spearfish Creek. Sections of path through the City Campground and out to the mouth of Spearfish Canyon are on the original railroad grade that ran trains from Spearfish up Spearfish Canyon.

There are 62 sites to be reserved; 56 full-hookup sites and 5 premium sites. The full-hookup sites include electricity (30 & 50 amp), water, sewer, and cable TV. The premium sites offer the same amenities but are wider, longer, along the creek and a little more private.

The Campground is located adjacent to the D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery and Spearfish City Park. Within walking distance of the campground is downtown Spearfish, public laundry facilities, grocery stores, hardware stores, and the Matthews Opera House.

There are also about 150 non-hookup sites available on a first-come first-served basis. Inquiries are welcome regarding how full we are, but we do not take actual reservations for non-hookup sites except during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Spearfish Parks & Rec

The newest sections are providing access to housing and commercial areas on the east side of Spearfish. The expansion continues through additional grant and tax funding sources. To date approximately 7.75 miles of Recreation Path have been completed.

The Spearfish City Campground is a beautiful shaded campground nestled along Spearfish Creek, one of the best trout fishing streams in the Black Hills.

The campground is open year round with full hook-up sites available May 15 through October 1, weather dependent. Revenue from the City Campground helps the City to minimize the mill levy thus reducing the burden on the taxpayers to fund municipal government.

increasing physical activity START WITH WALKING!

Play and recreation

It’s Easy

are important for good health. Look for opportunities such as these to be active and have fun at the same time: • Plan family outings and vacations that include physical activity (hiking, backpacking, swimming, etc.)

Take the first step. Why? It’s easy, it works and it pays!

Walking is the simplest way to start and continue a fitness journey.

Walking has the lowest dropout rate of any type of exercise.

Walking costs nothing to get started.

Walking is easy and safe.

Studies show that for every hour of walking, life expectancy may increase by two hours.

Walking for as few as 30 minutes a day provides heart health benefits.

It Works

Walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health.

It Pays • •

Spearfish Parks & Rec

Physically active people save $500 a year in healthcare costs. Employers can save $16 for every $1 they spend on health and wellness. Fitness programs have reduced employer healthcare costs by 20 - 55%. • Reducing just one health risk in the workplace increases productivity by 9%. • Reducing one health risk decreases absenteeism by 2%.

See the sights in new cities by walking, jogging or bicycling.

Make a date with a friend to enjoy your favorite physical activities. Do them regularly.

Play your favorite music while exercising; enjoy something that motivates you.

Dance with someone or by yourself. Take dancing lessons. Hit the dance floor on fast numbers instead of slow ones.

Join a recreational club that emphasizes physical activity.

At the beach, sit and watch the waves instead of lying flat. Better yet, get up and walk, run or fly a kite.

When golfing, walk instead of using a cart.

At a picnic, join in on badminton instead of croquet.

Play singles tennis or racquetball instead of doubles.

At the lake, rent a rowboat instead of a canoe.

And walking isn’t your only option. You may be surprised at all your opportunities to increase your physical activity every day.

connect spearfish initiative

The City of Spearfish received a community improvement grant from the CDC and our partner the National Recreation and Parks Association. The purpose of ACHIEVE is to bring together local leaders and stakeholders to build healthier communities. A CHART (Community Health Action Response Team) was started in 2012 to conduct the CHANGE survey to provide a community snapshot of local policy, systems, and environmental change strategies currently in place and help identify areas of improvements. Focus areas were Tobacco Use, Chronic Disease, Physical Activity, and Nutrition. Completion of the community at large portion of the survey concluded that the Spearfish community has many strengths and specific needs. Spearfish offers healthy opportunities and activities for the community, providing educational opportunities through the Hospital, tobacco free restaurants, youth sports complexes, Hills Horizon Community Garden, Farmers Market and Bountiful Basket locations. Our city supports safe bike routes with 7.7 miles of community recreation path, 22 parks and a community recreation and aquatics center. Our schools and the university both provide more nutritional meals and are creating policies on healthy snacks for parties/holidays. Needs that were found through the assessment include offering healthy foods at restaurants, safe routes to schools and recreation areas for bikers and walkers, tobacco free zones in parks and multi-unit housing, healthy harvest education to youth and families, healthy concession offerings, and continued community level initiatives that support healthy lifestyles. Connect Spearfish, a group of committed local citizens, businesses, and agencies was formed to develop goals that support each area in the community. Our vision is for a connected Spearfish that is an active and healthy community. Our mission is to create community connections that encourage, support, and sustain a healthy community that is fit, tobacco free, eats right, and plays more. We developed specific goals that meet the standards of the grant, and have larger and longer range goals that fit with our mission. Connect Spearfish 2013 Goals: To Increase the number of posted tobacco free areas/playgrounds and venues in the community.

To increase the number of venues offering healthy food and drink options available for youth and adults during events.

To increase the number of miles available for non-motorized physical activity in Spearfish.

To increase the number of free educational opportunities in the community that promote exercise, healthy food and drink options, or health related risk factor reduction.
