Spearfish Community Coalition

About The Coalition

(6)

The Spearfish Community Coalition is a volunteer driven non-profit organization whose mission is to mobilize the community to support positive, healthy and drug free youth. Dedicated to the improvement of our community and to providing healthy opportunities for our youth, Coalition members work hard on a number of initiatives that reduce and prevent underage drinking, tobacco use and other drug use. The Coalition also works to build protective factors through developmental assets and youth leadership opportunities. With grant funding through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the SD State Tobacco Control Program, the Coalition operates as a 501(c)3 Nonprofit volunteer organization to provide education, skill enhancement, policy modification and development, physical design change, reduction of barriers to prevention efforts, and changing consequences. The Coalition functions through the Strategic Prevention Framework, which includes assessment, capacity building, planning, implementation, evaluation and sustainability. In its fifth year as a Drug Free Communities grantee, the Coalition continues to build capacity and strengthen collaborations with community partners such as the Spearfish School District, YouthWise, Spearfish Rec and Aquatic Center, City of Spearfish, and Butte/Lawrence County 4-H, in addition to the numerous parents, youth, businesses and civic organizations.

Current initiatives include: • Promoting smoke-free multi-unit housing policies; • Implementing a tobacco-free parks and play spaces ordinance; • Providing support for the Spearfish School District’s TEAMMATES mentoring program, LifeSkills prevention curriculum and Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) group; • Provide training and ID checks using the ID Scanner at Downtown Friday Nights and other community events; • Youth leadership opportunities such as the Youth Day Leadership Summit; • Positive Community Norms campaign - an effort that focuses on changing community misperceptions that all kids drink, or smoke or are in trouble, to correct perceptions that most kids do not engage in risky behaviors; • And youth activities such as the Post Sno-ball Dance Breakfast, Red Ribbon activities, Teen Tailgate at Homecoming and many other opportunities. There are many ways to get involved with the Spearfish Community Coalition. Committees that meet frequently include Policy, Capacity and Collaboration, Social Media and Asset Building. In addition, the Coalition provides safe, drug free activities for youth, community education presentations, community speakers, prescription drug takeback events, and Youth Leadership events. The general coalition meets every third Tuesday at 7 am at the Spearfish Rec Center and noon at various locations. The Coalition also

to include active representation from parents, media, businesses, law enforcement, schools, youth serving organizations, civic/volunteer organizations, health care professionals, state and local government agencies, religious organizations, those involved in reducing substance abuse and most importantly, youth. holds a nine member Board of Directors and is always looking for new members. The Youth Empowerment Team is a key aspect of the Spearfish Community Coalition which consists of youth in grades 6-12. Through the YET, the coalition can provide a voice to youth, teach leadership skills, educate, inspire and mentor Spearfish youth in a positive manner. The ultimate goal of the Spearfish Community Coalition is to provide a safe, healthy community for our children to grow, learn and lead in the future. These efforts cannot be done alone. It takes many people in the community working together to succeed. The Coalition strives

Tobacco Education Efforts led by T.A.T.U. Youth

children. They recognize that new smokers must continually be recruited to replace the nearly half-million who die annually of tobacco-related illnesses.

Effective Solutions:

Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a program that allows students ages 14-17 to mentor youngsters about the dangers of smoking. Research indicates that teens enjoy opportunities to positively influence their younger counterparts. Consequently, this mentoring also serves to reinforce their decisions to remain smoke-free. Evidence suggests that peer-led programs such as TATU are more effective in reducing tobacco use among youth.

The Need for Tobacco Education:

• Tobacco use begins at an early age. Almost 90 percent of all smokers begin before the age of 18. • Everyday more than 4,000 kids try their first cigarette; and each day more than 2,000 other kids under 18 years of age become new regular, daily smokers. That's more than 750,000 new underage daily smokers each year. • The tobacco industry concentrates its marketing efforts on our nation's

• The TATU program transforms teens from consumers to consumer advocates. They learn to recognize the tobacco industry's efforts to target them as the next generation of smokers. • Teens learn the vital role they will play in education children on the dangers of smoking • Empowered with this new knowledge, the teens take their anti-smoking message to schools throughout their community. • TATU teens have been involved in advocacy issues in their own communities, which have broadened their roles as youth leaders and role models. • In elementary and middle schools, high school youth presentations are a refreshing departure from the traditional lessons taught by adults.

Four Alcohol Brands Dominate Popular Music Mentions Depictions of Alcohol Use in Songs Popular Among Youth Overwhelmingly Positive alcohol), followed by country (21.8%) and pop (14.9%). At least 14 long-term studies have found that exposure to alcohol marketing in the mass media increases the likelihood that young people will start drinking or, if already drinking, drink more. Adolescents in the U.S. spend approximately 2.5 hours per day listening to music. “Given the heavy exposure of youth to popular music, these results suggest popular music may serve as a major source of promotion of alcohol use among youth,” said study co- author David Jernigan, PhD, director of CAMY. “The findings lay a strong foundation for further research.” Alcohol is responsible for at least 4,700 deaths per year among young people under the age of 21 in the U.S. More than 70 percent of high school students have consumed alcohol, and about 22 percent engage in heavy episodic drinking.

Prevention Information

Four alcohol brands - Patron tequila, Hennessy cognac, Grey Goose vodka, and Jack Daniel’s whiskey – accounted for more than half of alcohol brand mentions in the songs that mentioned alcohol use in Billboard’s most popular song lists in 2009, 2010 and 2011, according to a new study from researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health and the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The study, published online by Substance Use & Misuse and the first to examine the context of specific brand mentions in depth, found that alcohol use was portrayed as overwhelmingly positive, with negative consequences rarely given. Of the 720 songs examined, 167 (23.2%) mentioned alcohol and 46 (6.4%) mentioned specific alcohol brands. The leading four brands accounted for more than half (51.6%) of all alcohol brand mentions. Alcohol mentions were most common in urban songs (rap, hiphop and R&B – 37.7% of songs mentioned

Smoke Free Parks Each year in South Dakota, more than 700 young people under the age of 18 become new daily smokers. More astonishingly, 18,000 youth under the age of 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. Supporting tobacco-free parks and recreation areas makes sense because it sends the right message--that tobacco use is unhealthy and an unnecessary behavior. The Spearfish Community Coalition is committed to providing cleaner open air by making all parks and recreation areas in Spearfish smoke-free. Here’s a few reasons why:

public places can reach levels as high as those found in indoor facilities where smoking is permitted.

Cigarette litter is harmful.

Cigarette butts are a very common form of litter found in parks and recreation areas. Discarded cigarettes pollute the land and water and may be ingested by toddlers, pets, birds, or fish.

Parks promote healthy activities. The purpose of community park systems is to promote community wellness, and tobacco-free policies fit with this idea.

Children model adult behaviors. Children who see adults using tobacco in a family-friendly place, like a park or recreation area, may think smoking is acceptable and are more likely to mimic the behavior. Toabcco-free policies encourage young people to make healthy choices. The more toabcco-free environments a community provides, the fewer opportunities for youth to start smoking.

Secondhand smoke is dangerous.

Secondhand smoke near children, youth and adults participating in or watching recreational activities is unhealthy and harmful to the health of others. Secondhand smoke levels in outdoor
